I love that they have packaged treats and gemstones you can hand pick from the window case - this gives newbies a chance to ask questions and order to their hearts content without committing to the unknown. My next visit I'm trying another drink option and pivoting to the savory selection; they don't have the hot case for nothing! The women who were here are so nice and attentive, they're helpful in explaining what things are and what to expect from the pastries. They're also great multitaskers, holding down the café, whilst keeping things in stock, staying on top of bulk orders and tending to the stores needs. Napakahusay

I'd get this again, though probably trying the regular hot dog bun instead of the scallion one next time. I'd asked the server if she could reheat our items when I bought them, but she said no, and didn't seem to understand English well. So far, I've preferred the savory things to the sweets here. Each item was $3-3.25, so a better value than the other bakeries I go to. I will return to this place periodically, but I still prefer places like Cruffin & Tea and Le Petit Paris, so I'm giving Mai Xiang Garden Bakery an average rating, 3 stars: pretty good, but not above average for a bakery, other than the good value.

Pineapple buns with custard filling, $2.75 each. They're a better value and tastier than the cheesecakes.

I sent the e-mail below to the Cake Shop of San Jose (on Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville), but first just a note regarding the shop ... as they receive cake orders, they prepare extra batter and icing and make it into jumbo cupcakes. They are often different each day. On two separate days, several of us went over and picked out a number of different cupcakes and did a taste test from at least eight different cupcakes. Our top four flavors were: Pineapple Coconut, Strawberry Puree, Dreamsicle, (these were the sponge, or lighter pound cake) and Carrot Cake. My daughter decided on the Sponge Cake with Strawberry Puree Icing. I ordered it about 5-6 days in advance. I have to say that the actual cake was better than the cupcake. See my sentiments to the shop below. From: Pat Lowe Sent: Thursday, September 25, 2014 7:47 PM To: the cake shop of sanjose Subject: 10" Strawberry Puree Sponge Cake I live in St. Augustine, but work in Jacksonville and discovered your cake shop recently. After taste testing several of your cupcakes, I ordered your 4-layer 10" Strawberry Puree Sponge Cake for a party my daughter was having. There were going to be 15-20 adults and a number of babies. I explained that my daughter lived in Ft. Lauderdale and I wanted to pick up the cake on Thursday late afternoon and then Friday morning, drive down there (5 hours from St. Augustine). The party was Saturday. You told me it was doable (as long as I didn't open the cake box and kept it cool). You suggested I pick up some freezer ice packs. I purchased four of the longer ice packs from Walmart (camping department) and found a large paper box with a cover. When I picked up the cake on Thursday at 4:45, you wrapped the cake box in a plastic/saran wrap to seal it into the white cake box. (You told me not to open it). You then placed in into my large paper box and I placed two of the ice packs (each wrapped in plastic so not to get the cake box damp) on either side of the cake and covered the box. I left it in that box over night and the next morning I traded the ice packs for two freshly frozen ones. As soon as I arrived in Ft. Lauderdale, I again traded out the ice packs and left the cake in the covered box. Saturday afternoon the cake was taken from the box (which was still cool inside) and placed on the table - yes there were some ooohs and aaahs, but as people started to eat it, the oohs and aahs turned into WHERE DID YOU GET THIS - I LOVE THIS CAKE! One women came up to me and told me here sister was getting married and she wanted this cake shop to make their wedding cake - do they ship! I explained that I drove it down. She was dissapointed. So this long dissertation is to let you know your cake was AMAZING. I thank you for all of your suggestions - which I followed to the letter. Everything went smoothly and it was perfectly delicious. Your talents are appreciated. Sincerely, Pat Lowe read more

For my birthday, my husband bought me a cake--big surprise, but it was not just any cake, it was a cake shaped like a camera. How genius of him to combine my love for food with my love for photography. I marveled at the cake for a really loooong time, secretly afraid to actually cut the cake and eat it. What if it was disgusting? I did not want it to be the cake that was too pretty to eat and actually better left uneaten. There was no way that so much focus could go into the design of a cake without sacrificing its taste. Well, the talented folks at this cake shop outdid themselves, because the cake was a true beauty, inside and out. Underneath the fondant was a chocolate cake with chocolate icing. The cake was surprisingly moist since I assumed that it at least sat out for some time while it transformed into a camera. Perhaps it was the fondant that sealed the moisture in? At any rate, the cake was at just the right density for me--I like my cake right in the middle of the light/fluffy and heavy/dense scale. Same goes for the icing--it was just the right sweetness. The fondant was a tad (okay, a lot of tad) too sweet for me, but I easily solved that problem by peeling it off my slice. read more
