We enjoyed several cupcake flavors for a family birthday. The very best flavor was the Boston cream, oh my! Absolutely delicious. The cake was light and fluffy, the custard was on point and not too sweet, with the hardened chocolate topping... it was a win! We also tried the red velvet and lemon cupcakes which also did not disappoint! My favorite thing about these cupcakes is the shape and proportion. I don't like super tall cupcakes that are awkward & messy to bite into. These are easy to eat yet are still of a generous size. Bonus: I called to check availability on a specific cupcake flavor and was able to purchase with a link to hold them until I could get there which was a small stress relief. I have a secret to tell you... I don't usually like birthday or wedding cake, unless I make it myself. Well, that has changed. Hosted a Hospice Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon and The Cake Shop of San Jose made our cake. It was an absolutely gorgeous cake. A profusion of gorgeous lush flowers seemed to have bloomed right on top. I did not eat any of the cake at the event, as I get so stressed and nervous when I am an event coordinator, but a small sliver of cake managed to make it all the way home with me, and out of curiosity... I tried it. I was so sad I hadn't snatched a larger piece, because it was nirvana! The cake itself held a tender buttery crumb, and the fresh raspberry filling tasted like they had picked the berries that morning. Even the icing on top was good, light, sweet, and not cloying with vegetable shortening. In fact, I would venture to guess it was made with real butter. And since my super power is that I have more taste buds than the average bear.... I really believe it was. My family has purchased all of our birthday cakes from The Cake Shop, since my daughter was a baby. She is now 30 years old! Through the years, our needs have always been the same . . .a beautifully decorated cake that tastes delicious! Gail, Bill and Regina (the next generation -Gail's daughter) have always delivered this, in a caring, professional way. We have taken their cakes with us, to many Jacksonville restaurants, (The River Club, Epping Forrest Club, Ruth's Chris). The results are always consistant. . . numerous staff asking "Where on earth did you get this cake"???? When my mother (now deceased) completely lost her appetite to Alzheimers, the only food that brought a smile to her face, was Gail's individually decorated cupcakes (with their "too die for" buttercream icing). Surprised to see I never wrote this back then (must have posted it on a different site), but they did an amazing job with our wedding cake. We wanted cheese cake and they smartly suggested layering it inside their sheet cake (less mess fir serving, eating). My sister ordered a cake for my niece's confirmation from here. The cake looked beautiful but the taste was way off. It tasted like soured milk. No one at the party ate more than a bite of the cake. She called to talk to them about the cake and they had the nerve to argue with her saying the cake tasted fine to them. There were 15 people at this party! They all thought it was off. Based on what I thought were decent reviews (I research a lot before I use a vendor) I decided to use this bakery for my mom's 80th birthday party cake. I spoke to staff two times on the phone as I live out of state. I noted the staff was not friendly but sample pictures of their cakes online enticed me to use them anyway. My sisters who live in Jax were tasked with going in person to the bakery to order. We had a hydrangea theme. The cake was to be THE focal point of the party (keep in mind this was a party at a venue with a live band and over 80 guests). My sisters took a magazine cover photo to show what we wanted the cake to look like. What we got was not even close. I mean the colors weren't anything like the hydrangeas on the mag cover and the shape of the flowers were all wrong. The flowers looked like they were just plopped randomly all over the top. Nothing artistic at all about this cake. It didn't look a thing like we asked for. I'd love to know who decorated the cakes on their website. It sure wasn't who did ours! At the last minute we were scurrying to buy a plain cake from another bakery so my sister could try and decorate it herself. We had to serve this cake from the back. It was never even shown to our guests. The taste of the cake was just average. Publix is just as good as far as quality of cake taste so don't bother spending the extra money on a cake here . We were so disappointed and here we are 4 days later still feeling sick about the fact that one of the most anticipated and important centerpieces of the party was a bust. And as my sister said "there are no do overs". We spoke to management. They are "sorry". Ok, thanks. I guess. Really want to give one star but giving two because we didn't confront the staff at the time of pick up. Person picking up was not comfortable confronting the staff. Don't usually write reviews but because this is how I pick businesses to use I wanted to save someone else the disappointment. If I could give a negative rating I would! The owner's daughter Regina is really nice, It is the owner Gail who is really rude. I have spent hundreds of dollars with them. At one point they made all of my cakes for birthdays or any occasion that my family had. The cakes are to expensive for their poor customer service. I had called in for a German Chocolate cake or cupcake and they were the only bakery willing to bake me at least the cupcakes in just a 2 hour turn around. I called everywhere Jacksonville and this place was the only 1 who did it with no hesitation or anything. I ordered a cake for my daughter's confirmation party this past weekend. $50 is a lot to spend on a cake, but good cakes can be expensive. It was very pretty and my daughter was thrilled by how it looked. I can't tell you how dissapointed we were by the taste. There was something terribly wrong with it. My guests spent 10 minutes trying to pinpoint just what was wrong with it. Was it bad ingredients? Sour milk? Too much baking soda? Who knows? But one thing is for sure, you want to brush your teeth after eating it because the after taste is so bad. I brought the cake up to the shop today to let the owner try it. The most incredible experience I have ever had ordering cupcakes. Thee Cake Shoppe made beautiful 100 teal and silver cupcakes for a charity event I hosted for a Navy veteran fighting cancer. These weren't your average cupcakes, they were huge!! From start to finish the employees were a pleasure to work with. I ran over an hour late picking up my cupcakes (some of my other vendors were running behind), and when I entered the door I was greeted with a smile. The owners are amazing. The cupcakes were DELICIOUS and decadent. All night I got compliments on how beautiful the cupcakes were and how good they tasted. The silver colored cupcakes genuinely looked like sterling silver, I'm not sure how they got that color but they were beautiful! The cakes are excellent. However, the customer service is poor. I called on Tuesday for a cake to be ready on Friday. A small cake, nothing fancy. On Friday, I go to pick it up and they say they never got the order! They claim they "didn't get the call or email". Well, I say, I can prove that I did both, I'm holding my iPhone. They claim they thought "some random person" had called and emailed them, so they ignored it. By that, I wonder how one is supposed to order? To their credit, they are hustling up a cake for me to be ready by 5 PM. I recommend calling, then calling again and maybe a third time to assure them that you really want a cake! read more

I called and placed an order early that morning for some cupcakes for my husband's birthday dinner. She took my order over the phone and I advised her that I would come pick them up at 4:30pm. I did not place my order early enough to get a special shape so I ordered a standard chocolate round 10 inch birthday cake for my son's birthday. The cake was ok but I expected more of a professional cake for $50. The cake layers were uneven and of a different size, they were not trimmed. The icing in between the layers was not even and very slight in places. The cake was made to look round and uniform by tons of icing on the outside of the cake. I personally would not risk a very important event like a wedding. Also, disappointed that the chocolate cake cost more than same cake in yellow.
