    Northern Hotel

    Northern Hotel

    (1 review)

A lovely traditional Victorian age hotel with 40 bedrooms for both holiday makers and residents…read more The Northern is full of character and charm with antique furniture and grand decor throughout. A stone's throw away from the beach and Bexhill's famous De La Warr Pavilion, The Northern sits comfortably in the centre of a quiet seaside town in the heart of 1066 Country. Run by the lovely Simms family and their friendly staff, who'll always go the extra mile to make their guests feel as happy and comfortable as humanly possible, and are always available for a chat. There are suites, double, twin and single rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms and some with lovely sea views. The hotel has two restaurants, the bright and airy Garden Room outlooking the well kept garden, and The Richmond Room, a larger more traditional looking hotel restaurant, to the front of the building. The food and service is exceptional; three course meals with homemade traditional food, and tantalising desserts finished with filtered coffee and mints, served by their excellent silver service waiting staff. The prices are very reasonable, some could say even a little too cheap for the service and quality that comes with it. As well as all this, there's the Wellington Room Bar complete with an outdoor balcony and upstairs you'll find a library and lounge, all of which are regularly used for functions. A wonderful place to dine, drink and sleep in luxurious style.

This is a really excellent hotel, I had a very relaxing stay here…read more It's right on the sea front, opposite the pier, so my room at the front of the building had a lovely view of the sea, and all along the promendade. The room itself was very comfortable and the bed was fantastic. The decor is simple and modern and everything was spotlessly clean. The bathroom was well thought out, with nice toiletries and a really deep bath, which made for an excellent relaxing soak after I went for a run. There are also a few other nice touches like herbal tea bags, and bottles of water in the little fridge. The owner/manager was really superb, he told me the best route for my run, and sorted out my meals (vegan and wheat free), with no fuss or hassle at all. For dinner, I had roasted veg in a tomato sauce, and for breakfast I had a fruit platter and some porridge. The breakfast isn't buffet style, so everything is prepared fresh, and the fruit was the best I have had in a hotel for a long time, in fact probably ever. Deliciously fresh melon, apple, pear, grape and pineapple. I would definitely stay here again.

We just arrived this morning and are already in love with this hotel. This place is so dog friendly…read moreeven for a 30kg German shepherd. Dogs are allowed everywhere in the hotel including the restaurant! Everyone is dog mad and our dog was told she was beautiful many, many times. Sitting at the bar enjoying a drink, dog gets a bowl of water, this isn't the welcome you normally get. It would've been nice, though, if we were directed to the nearest places out dog could toilet when we checked in. (Overnight) if you are a light sleeper, do not take one of the rooms facing the seafront in summer. The road is used constantly and with the windows open it makes it difficult to sleep, but the view is worth it for those of us who are willing to make the sacrifice. As an older hotel, the walls are thin and you can hear people stomping in the corridor. The tea/coffee set to is good, includes bottled water. The bathroom small but functional although it did take me awhile to figure out his to turn the shower on. I would still come back here again.

George in Rye is just amazing! the staff is very wonderful and very accommodating towards their guests. The restaurant is amazing as well, everything we had for dinner and breakfast was so good! The charm and designs of the hotel are everything i love, it home-y and charming and elegant at the same time. I want to come back to Rye just to stay at the George in Rye! and maybe to see more of the town... If you're going to Rye, book a room at the George in Rye, you will NOT be disappointed!

We were keeping our expectations moderate for The George. We'd heard only that the town of Rye was…read morevery cute, or if not that, quaint. Cute and quaint are all well and good but they call to mind slightly dusty hotel rooms stocked with ceramic angels and starving artist landscapes. Luckily for us, there wasn't a ceramic angel to be seen at The George. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that The George is as well-appointed and modern as any hotel my partner and I have ever stayed at anywhere in the world. Our room was spacious (almost ludicrously so, given the compactness of the town) and smartly decorated. The bathroom sports a beaten tin bathtub large enough to wash up a horse, and the shower is a walk-in with a powerful flow rate. The room has facilities for tea and a cafetiere, and the friendly staff will top up either if you're a prodigious drinker. My only quibble with The George is that the food in the restaurant isn't up to the standard of the hotel itself -- but Rye is so tiny that there's no reason why you can't stay at the George and walk down to the excellent Ship Inn or the local chippie for dinner.

These were shaped like little hot peppers but they were not hot. We really liked that dish. For the main course, I had the cod & chips and my wife had the chicken hogao. Both arrived very hot and tasted great. The tartar sauce with mine was made at the restaurant and was excellent. The only issue with the tartar sauce was there was so little of it. By the time we finished there was no room for desert. We really like this place and may return tonight if we get back from Cambridge in time.

We were lucky enough to stay here in one of the lodges on a Secret Escapes deal…read more The lodges are part of a recent refurbishment to the pub and are nestled quietly at the back, surrounding a massive fire pit. Each lodge is unique in its design, and has its own private outdoor area complete with fireplace and chairs to snuggle up. We stayed in the Pretty Vacant lodge, the focal point being a massive Vacant/Occupied sign above the bed, which you could move from vacant to occupied. Attention to detail is key, and the room provides the guest with a host of thoughtful extras. From the local toiletries in the bathroom which you could purchase in the village, to the delicious cream tea that welcomes you in the room. We had dinner that evening in the pub. The food was really delicious, and well portioned. A similar themed followed at breakfast the following morning. The entire pub and accommodation is really quirky, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Whilst there is not much to do in the surrounding village, this does not matter as The Bell is so charming you don't want to leave the room, or venture any further for food.

If you have not stayed here before it might be better to think of it as a B&B rather than a hotel. There is a pretty average pub on the ground floor with 5 or 6 rooms upstairs which is where you will be spending the night. A tasty, cooked to order, breakfast is served downstairs in the pub. The rooms are pretty basic but clean and tidy. I had a family room with a double and a single bed all to myself for £45 per night which I thought was reasonable value. A decent TV and free wifi are plus points - a tired old shower with very little power was the biggest negative. The hotel is situated on a main road with a pub below and quite thin walls so I would recommend packing some ear plugs if you are a light sleeper. I had a little bit of trouble convincing the staff that I had pre-paid for my accommodation when I left on the Sunday morning, I had to show a confirmation email twice and they still looked doubtful, so make sure you have all your paperwork handy. Not somewhere I would recommend for a romantic mini break but perfect if you need a low cost place to hang your hat for a night or two.
