I was not a guest at the hotel but did take the time to read the historical marker in front and check out the lovely building from the outside. The marker is mounted on the wall and reads, "This locally famous landmark was constructed in 1836 by Joshua S. Layton and Caleb B. Sipple, builders of the Sussex County Courthouse across the Square. It replaced a frame Public House that had stood on the site. County courts were held here during construction of the Courthouse 1837-39. The accommodations and hospitality of the house made this a popular stopping place for both residents and visitors to the County Seat. Known for a time as the Union Hotel, this was a well-known gathering-place for northern sympathizers during the Civil War. After the war, business flourished with the coming of the railroad. With the advent of the automobile, the number of lodgers began to decline, and the hotel was closed in the mid-1950's. The building was later renovated and used as a bank until 1998. The Brick Hotel was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1979." This is marker number SC-139 and was erected by the Delaware Public Archives in 2000. We only got to meet Lynn briefly but anyone who saves an old building is a hero to me! The renovation to bring this back to a hotel is beautifully done, and decorated tastefully and comfortably. It was our anniversary weekend so we were going to splurge a little. The Brick Hotel really makes you feel pampered. Our room was one of the smallest (The Chambers) but all they had left at the time, and it was still plenty large and spotlessly clean. They leave complimentary drinks and snacks in your room, and have a nice continental breakfast with scones, muffins, oatmeal, yogurt, and fruit. Coffee and other beverages are always available. The rooms have a heated towel rack, which was kind of amusing but actually more useful to dry wet towels. The shower was large with nice white tile and a seat (again kind of amusing) but the shower head I didn't care for. I understand trying to save water but you really have to run around in there to get wet and it just takes longer. We also could unfortunately hear people using the microwave oven around 4:30 in the morning- it was on the other side of the wall to our room. There are several sitting areas to enjoy, including the 2nd floor deck in the front of the building. We sat out there and watched traffic go around the circle, drank our coffee out there in the morning and our beer in the evening. We also had dinner in the restaurant one evening which included the fried green tomato tower, seafood bouilliabaisse, and a delicious saffron risotto. Of the staff we met Kelly and Lisa were particularly helpful and engaging. Georgetown is one of those places I doubt we'll ever go back to but would absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the area. Dang, the Microtel wants $100 a night, so stay here, are you kidding? read more

This review is for the restaurant located in the Brick Hotel - not for the hotel itself. The restaurant is located in a beautiful old building which we loved as we were passing through this town on our way to Rehoboth beach. We came back the next day to try their lunch. The service was good, and the food was incredibly good. I would call their cuisine a fusion cuisine - even classic southern dishes like Fried Green Tomatoes get a modern (and wonderful) treatment here. The lunch was so amazing and nicely priced that we came back for dinner too. Dinner was not as good an experience for a few reasons. There was a pizza on the menu that was awful. Unfortunately, since our waiter recommended this pizza so heavily, two among the six of us ordered that pizza, and it left a bad taste. All other dishes were good. What I found somewhat surprising is that the dinner prices are way higher than the lunch prices, even though the dish I ordered for lunch and dinner were "exactly" the same. Haha. So basically, I ate the exact same main dish for lunch and dinner, and paid a whole lot more at dinner time. While the service during lunch (we sat at the bar for lunch) was excellent, the dinner service left a lot to be desired. I think our waiter may have overheard us talking about the awful pizza so he never came back to get our feedback on how our food was. So, we went there twice in one day - had a fantastic experience at lunch, and a so-so experience at dinner. I am still rating it 4/5 because except for the pizza, most of the other dishes we tried were excellent. I wish they had done a better job at dinner time. Oh well. If I am passing by this town during lunch time, I will certainly go here again. read more

This is a very refined boutique hotel with a wonderful steak and seafood restaurant downstairs. No mere hotel food here; this is a destination restaurant. I had a Shrimp Po Boy with hand cut fries on my visit. I was very happy. Upon arriving 2 hours early for the usual 3 pm check-in, I met the owner Lynn Lester, a bubbly, outgoing, and charming host. She informed me I could grab my things from my car because SURPRISE my room was ready early! This never happens. Then she suggested I may want to have lunch in their gorgeous restaurant. She must have read my mind. I was tired from a long drive, thirsty, and hungry. Lynn dropped what she was doing to give me a full tour of all that this boutique-style hotel has to offer. The very first thing she did, was hand me her personal business card with her private 24 hour cell phone number, and invited me to call her anytime day or night - if I needed anything. She meant it. Lynn explained the history of the original hotel, and then showed me their 2nd floor pergola that overlooks The Circle, and a good chunk of the "downtown". It's complete with couches and rockers. You can sip your Mint Julep and watch the world go by. There is also a large rooftop deck, with strategically placed chairs and tables, and it's strung with those lights that give gatherings of 2 or 200 that festive, romantic feeling. Lynn showed me some of the hotel rooms as well. The website's pictures don't begin to do the hotel or its rooms justice. You make no sacrifices when you stay here. From the free continental breakfast waiting for you just steps from your room including; freshly baked scones and muffins, fresh fruit salad, coffee and tea...enough to get you started as my host explained. Your room has no mini-bar. Instead it is stocked with complimentary bottles of spring water, and snacks. A hotel that's not gouging me $7.50 for a bottle of water is refreshing. Finding gifts of snacks and spring water and soda is really appreciated. It is convenient and it makes you feel welcome. My room was called "The Vines" and included a super comfortable king-size bed. Supportive but not rock hard, with a luscious duvet and all white, high thread count linens. A generously sized 42" SONY flat panel TV with every conceivable cable channel including all the HBO channels. {Thankfully there are no nagging commercials for $20. pay movies every time you turn on the tv, as they have in every chain hotel.} There was a small terrace with 2 chairs, and a table in the corner that doubles as a desk, with 2 chairs, a dry sink and dresser add to the country theme, 2 night tables, and everything was scrupulously clean. Free WiFi in your room and throughout the hotel. The bathroom had a large sliding door shower, separate toilet with the best toilet paper in the world. Vessel sink, Koehler antique faucets, tumbled marble, and a double closet with full length mirrors. I got all of this at a 1/3 the price of the beach hotel, plus free WiFi, free breakfast, free parking, and free in room-snacks. I think I will use Lynn's phone number to book my room for my next trip in 2 weeks. I know I won't have to look around for any other place to stay. read more

I've tried many hotels in the area and this one is the best. It really depend upon your true destination. If the destination fits, the great thing about this hotel is that it is old, funky and is located at the center of the town. The rooms are nice - because it is an old establishment - no two rooms are alike. There are a few common rooms inside and a few terraces as well. The bar is a good feature. The food at the restaurant looks pretty good although we didn't venture into the menu. read more

We had our daughter's wedding at The Brick. The attention to detail was unprecedented; the service was above and beyond what I've ever encountered. Anyone looking for a full service place for a wedding cannot do better. Lynn handled a last minute room accommodation with such professionalism and Kelly made them fell like they were welcomed as if into their home. Their staff handled everything. We loved everything about this hotel. The staff was friendly and welcoming. The room was cozy and clean. If you're going to stay in Georgetown you will be happy that you chose a historic, locally owned hotel rather than a chain. Check-in was very easy. Staff sent several e-mails leading up to our reservation date. The front desk isn't staffed 24/7 -- so a pass code is provided for entry through a rear door when the staff isn't on duty. They also gave us the owner's cell phone and told us to call night or day if we had a problem. We didn't need it but it was nice to know that it was an option. We were busy with family obligations so didn't get a chance to enjoy the restaurant or bar -- We hope to spend some time there next time! The breakfast provided was basic but very good. Coffee and drink are out all the time. Scones, muffins, yogurt, fruit, instant oatmeal, etc. are provided in the morning. Overall, I highly recommend this hotel! read more

If you don't mind being 30 mins from the beach (if that's where you're headed), this place is an easy selection. Quiet, quaint, beautiful little hotel in a nice little town. Two of the best parts about the hotel: Local brewery is only 1.5 miles away and there is an incredible hole-in-the-wall Mexican joint (which I've reviewed as well) a mere 3 blocks away. Our room was small, but it served it's purpose and we didn't have to deal with the beach traffic - would stay here again. Kelly, the manager, was freaking awesome. Always cheerful, always polite, and always making sure we were happy. Sadly, she had to do a little bar tending as well because the bar tender on the Friday night we were there was "in the weeds." Poor thing wasn't moving fast, and she needed some help. Beyond the bar tender issue, loved The Brick. We will be back. read more

Confusing, because I believe the present name is The Counting House. I will repost my review here just in case you are still calling it The Brick Hotel... Great atmosphere, unique menu with a very farm-fresh with a creative twist attitude. I've had the kale & white bean soup, roasted beet salad, and chicken and oysters and another time the seafood muddle, all delicious. My dining partners all enjoyed their meals also. One night, we stopped in without reservations. The historic building has much lore and that night at least 50 paranormal enthusiasts were meeting to eat and commune with specters. Really cool place! Our destination was Rehoboth Beach, and this was the closest spot with a room available. It is 30 minutes from the beach, but we were really happy when we arrived and found this quaint, historic spot! Very small, lots of antique furniture and decor, and many nice touches like free snacks in the room, a towel warmer rack in the bathroom, and access to two beautiful common porch areas. Despite all the antiques, the room was outfitted with wonderful, modern appliances (the shower was small but the shower head so nice -- great water pressure... so relaxing), and good working air conditioning. We didn't realize when we booked our room that this is a historic building, so that was pretty cool. At first, when I found this out, I was a little worried, especially since its such a small inn, we had to call ahead to let them know when exactly we would be arriving. Usually, after a long car ride I like to just check-in and get up to my room to relax somewhat anonymously. However, after a friendly welcome, and personal tour up to our room, we were left to ourselves, to enjoy the privacy of our room (SUPER comfortable bed!), and beautiful view from the common-area porch with lovely rocking chairs, over-looking the town square. My only complaint was that when we woke up around 10, the breakfast had mostly been taken away. There were still yogurts, and instant oatmeal, etc., but the scones and muffins were gone. I understand 10 is a bit late for breakfast, but I hadn't been able to find anywhere that said what time breakfast ended, and we hadn't been told those hours, so we just didn't know. Overall, great experience, nice to mix it up from the usual chain hotel. Pleasantly surprised, given the affordability, at the luxury of the room and amenities. And it's definitely worth being 30 minutes away from the tourist traps at the beach. Also, my boyfriend was ecstatic to find out that our room literally had two PokeStops in it. Since it's a historic area, there were a ton of spots around the hotel, and just our luck that we could access two of them while sitting in our room :) read more

I hate to do this. I really do. We visited the Brick this past Saturday and were in the midst of really enjoying our experience... And then... I realized my four year old's kids meal (chicken tenders) were raw inside. You read that right. I confiscated her meal immediately, and tried to calm my mother, who had downed a finger in a fit of hunger. Who knows whether it was cooked or not. Hey, mistakes happen, right? Well, our restitution was beyond absurd: half off the kids meal, because one of the chicken fingers had been eaten... By my mother. Went for the buffet breakfast on Sunday with a group of neighbors. Possibly the worst buffet breakfast I have ever had. Terrible food. Terrible presentation. Terribly greasy. Any college dining hall I went to in the 70s was better. Sausage and bacon was dangerously greasy. Scrambled eggs possibly powdered eggs. Something resembling chunky French toast was awful. Oh , the salad at beginning of buffet line I think was about a week old. When we first sat down each table had these two mini acme supermarket Danish on a plate that looked stale and ridiculous. They gave u a mimosa at the END???, which was warm and not good. The seating area in front of restaurant had an arctic draft. Service was attempting to be helpful but they were ok at best. We absolutely loved staying at this hotel!! We were greeted personally and escorted to our room. The room was beautiful and there are many wonderful sitting rooms and places to lounge, including a large balcony on the second floor, where we drank a bottle of wine with a great view of the center of town. and it's lovely park It's not on the beach, but it is a quaint and quiet place to get away. They didn't answer their phone for over a week when I was trying to make the reservation. It took emails from the conference host before they made the reservation. I had a medical emergency and cancelled before the date of the reservation and they still charged me $25 PER NIGHT, so I paid $50 because it was two nights, and they refunded the rest promptly, but only after I sent the medical proof. Although I cancelled before the reservation date, they still charged me the first night before the date, and then for another full day even after I cancelled, and only refunded after the proof was sent in. In other words, if you tell them you are staying multiple days then they will bill you for all of those days, even if you don't show and even if you cancel ahead of time. Beware! read more

Great place to eat a very good upscale meal if you don't want to head over to the beaches and fight the crowds and traffic. My wife and I have been here twice over the past couple months and both times the food was excellent. Crab dip is awesome! My wife had the crab cakes and said they were very good. I had the duck and it was cooked perfectly. The sides are always fresh and prepared well. The service is a bit slow but who goes to an upscale restaurant in a hurry. One of the best places to eat on this side of the county. read more

Restaurant Review: I didn't even want to give this place 1 star. We arrived at the Brick Hotel's restaurant at 6:15 on a Saturday night. We were to meet some friends, so went inside to put our name on the list. No one was at the front desk when we walked in. A group of 4 arrived shortly after us. When the hostess finally arrived, she looked over us to ask the 4 behind us if they could be helped. This was to set the tone for the next hour and 20 minutes. We put our name in (not sure why because there were many empty tables) and took a seat in the bar for drinks. When we stood at the bar to order, we were ignored again! Finally the "bartender" looked up and said "Oh, can I help you?" We got our drinks and sat down to wait. At this point we noticed that we were the last to arrive. No one but the four of us were waiting. After an hour, we inquired to the hostess as to how much longer it would be. Impatiently she said it would be "just a minute longer." We waited another 10 minutes and then decided to leave. When we approached the bar to pay our tab, we were ignored again! This time by the owner himself! We explained we were going to leave since we didn't feel like we were welcomed there and he immediately got an attitude and took at least 10 more minutes to square up our tab. We left and went to another restaurant down the street. While the owner was getting our bar tab, we were then grilled by several people sitting at the bar asking us where we were from and why were so impatient. It was bazaar to say the least!! Suddenly we all felt as though we had entered another dimension. These people obviously don't know what customer service is or even a clue as to how to run a restaurant. The Brick Hotel will please anyone who chooses to stay there. The hotel is a historic property with an interesting history, but it has been thoroughly and lovingly renovated and looks very up-to-date and includes all the modern amenities. The accommodations are excellent in every respect, and are very reasonably priced. The owner is onsite and available, and is very forthcoming with information about what to do in the area, which restaurants to visit, etc. And the hotel also offers an excellent restaurant and a lively bar area, both of which attract a great deal of business from Georgetown locals. I guarantee that you will be glad you stayed at The Brick instead of a chain establishment. read more

This evening we drove from Milton, DE to Georgetown, DE after seeing an add in this weeks Cape Gazette for a Thursday special on burgers and fries for $6. My wife and I thought we would give the Brick House and Tavern a try since we are new to the area. After arriving at the restaurant we were informed the special on hamburgers was moved to Tuesday nights. How can you advertise a special and then tell your customers you changed the special to another night? We left and will not be going back there anytime soon. read more

Having dined at the Brick since it opened nearly four years ago, I am sad to report that I have had a very bad experience. I got food poisoning there and became extremely ill. When I told the Innkeeper and restaurant manager about it, her reaction was one of denial and it shocked me. I would have expected them to be more humble about it. In order to keep damage control, they have asked me to "take a break from the Brick." This means that I am banned from eating there and I am the one that got sick. I would have expected them to be so professional but that is not the kind of response I received. The food is really only so so, but the hotel is lovely. I have seen the rooms and they really have done an excellent job decorating. I wish that they had more experience dealing with incidents like the one that I experienced. In response to Lynn's posting, I do not want to debate issues with Lynn. It is true that the owner asked me to leave the hotel when they thought that I was gossiping about the financial status of their business. I wasn't and it was presented to them in such a way as to make me look like the bad guy. On two occasions I tried to find the owners to speak with them and on both occasions they were not available. Yes, I was upset about the food poisoning and when we finally spoke they brushed it aside, as they were focused on something else. There was no incident and, I have supported this business, to the tune of thousands of dollars, since they opened their doors. I, along with others, want to see them succeed. I have personally marketed the Brick and have sent many friends and acquaintances there. Why would I want to jeopardize something that I enjoyed immensely. The Brick gives a face lift to the town and has brought many people from all over the county to visit. It is sad that Lynn is so quick to judge. I think that they call it "shooting from the hip." The Brick is under new ownership and is now "The Counting House". I do not see how it will survive as they have gone FAR away front the traditional local fare, e.g. the chicken salad and fried oyster plate (a traditional Maryland and Delaware dish consisted of good fried oysters, but chicken salad which used pulled chicken rather than chopped chicken and was infused with curry! The pan fried fish was halibut rather than local fare such as rockfish or even trout or mahi mahi. The old Brick's usually delicious cream of crab soup was no longer available and I ordered the turtle soup which had hunks of the toughest turtle imaginable. This area of the country is the eastern center of chicken production and no entrees featured chicken; the same goes for crab other then the available crab cakes. The menus is very limited and the accompanying sides are "FruFru" food (kale, etc). We've eaten at the Brick for years and it is a half hour drive, but we won't be going back. read more

I took my 82 year old mother to the restaurant this past Saturday evening for dinner and had a wonderful time. There was live music, making the dining area very festive. I found our service staff to be professional, pleasant and our dinners were wonderful. I had duck, it was prepared perfectly, just the way I asked. My mother had a chicken dish with capers and there were so many flavors, I think I want to order what she had next time. I recently began working in the lower Delaware area after living and working in Philadelphia for many years. I went exploring after a meeting, ended up in Georgetown and saw the Brick. Very pretty area, seems so sophisticated and close to the most wonderful antique mall I have ever been to, I'll be back soon. read more

Amazingly great place to stay and eat! We have now stayed there a couple times in different rooms and both times the room was spotless,decorated beautifully,spacious. The Brick does it perfect from Lynn the owner to Kelly the manager, she thinks of everything to Carolyn and Lisa two waitresses in the restaurant that know the menu from top to bottom, every detail is taken care of to make your stay the very best it can be. We had the New York Strip for dinner and it was fabulous,the oyster stew is wonderful and fresh tasting,tavern fries are a must and the mini crab balls for and appetizer are just perfect! Prices are great too,heck even their iced tea is great. I could go on and on but you need to see for yourself,stay a night or two,dine there,or just try the Sunday Brunch you will be pleased with any of them. Call ahead and be sure Lisa and Carolyn are working,two of the best waitresses we have ever had anywhere! Thanks to The Brick for making our stay wonderful,we will be back again. We recently moved to Sussex county and we have enjoyed dining at The Brick. Our first experience was the Sunday brunch, which was nothing special, but good price and great service. Our 2nd experience was for dinner. We had the prime rib special and it was a good choice at a great price. (au Juis was not served with it and that would have been a plus). We went back tonight for dinner and once again the food was wonderful, as was the service and prices. The menu choices are so good, it is difficult to choose. Not many places have live dinner music and both times we dined we enjoyed music with our meal. The vocalist was incredible. After having one of the worst meals we have had in a long time and e- mailing them and not even getting a courtesy of a reply that is poor business practice. We went to celebrate 2 birthdays on a Thursday night two weeks ago this is what transpired. Our waitress had too many tables while other waitstaff just hung around. We waited 1!hour for our salads to come...then our entree's arrived, my shrimp was tasteless and bland and after waiting for an hour and a half for my meal to arrive I ate only the shrimp. I swear cardboard would have had more taste. The chicken Piccata must have been less than 2oz, with one plate served with a cold sweet potato, and the other sweet potato burnt. What an awful place, lets start with I came there and asked not to be seated by the music entertainment. The hostess said I'm sorry that's where we are seating...so I asked for the front room with the fireplace that was empty and she said no servers aren't going in there. I was a server for many years, I went where the customers and tips were so I never worked a place where a host would say no. I politely asked to speak to a manager and this large masculine woman came to the table and asked "who is the irritate one". Excuse me as someone in customer service for years, you never came to table and greet customer like that, I see that its a private owned company and that's why probably corporate owned companies mandate their staff for constant training whereas here it seems like a free for all. I went to the car to get my breathing inhaler when I overheard the manager outside smoking on the patio with the staff talking about me, how professional right? So i said "can you please attempt to not insult me behind my back". She hunched down and quieted. Our table finished our meal but it was my birthday and I was treated awful, I went home crying and I will not go back again. I have many friends within Delaware and I have tried not to be vindictive about this place because it was so cute and charming and everyone has an off day and people deserve second chances but I think its best to chalk it up to "see not fault within ourselves then we will never change." They seemed proud of how they responded...each of them and felt compelled to bash me and be "right". You be "right" all you want, I will not be coming back and I will, and I am sorry, but I will never recommend here to anyone. Customer service skills needs to be enforced.
