I'm sharing this in hopes of helping others avoid what happened to me. In July 2021, I rented a 26-foot truck from U-Haul while stationed in California with the U.S. Army. Before accepting the vehicle, I immediately pointed out existing front-end damage and the fuel level to the store attendant. I was told, "it's already known - don't worry about it." Trusting their word, I signed and drove the truck under 20 miles before returning it the same day, on time, with the fuel verified upon return. Fast forward a few months - while preparing for deployment, I received what looked like a spam email from an insurance company, claiming I owed over $5,000 in damage to the truck. I was shocked. After further investigation, I found an official repair estimate showing extensive repairs -- including bumper replacement, a front-end alignment, hood work, decals, and more -- all tied to my name. I also received a separate U-Haul billing statement for $607.00, despite being told the damage was pre-existing. I work in IT for the Army. I'm diligent, careful, and honest. I followed the right steps: I documented damage verbally, returned the truck as agreed, and trusted the employee's assurance. That trust was clearly a mistake. Now, years later, I'm stationed in Oklahoma and tried to rent a trailer -- only to be told I still owe nearly $600. I feel like I was used as the fall guy because I was the last person to drive the truck before U-Haul decided to report and fix damage they had long ignored. Let this be a warning to everyone: never accept verbal confirmation of damage. Insist it is written down and documented on the rental agreement or take your own photos and videos. I hope U-Haul revisits its internal policies to prevent this kind of unfair treatment -- especially to service members or anyone who rents in good faith. read more

They overcharged us for the truck rental and additionally upsold us on insurance that they said was per day, and that we could get a refund of insurance if we didn't have the truck for more than 1 day, then after numerous phone calls where someone at U-Haul central said they would refund us, the area manager refused even though they clearly state a daily rate for the insurance. On the return side, their app didn't work and we were charged extra days when we actually returned the truck early. read more

I've never met employees so aggressively unhelpful in my life. I came in with a box that needed some additional packing material and asked for some guidance on what I should use and how much of it I would need. I showed them the box, and was told my options were on the back wall. I asked what was going to be cheapest and was told the prices were listed by the packing materials. I asked to go with whatever they recommended and they said that was a choice I was going to make, not them. I got no help packing said items or moving the box around to the different areas they needed it. When I said I needed it shipped via FedEx, I was given a paper form to fill out. When the option for shipping that I wanted wasn't available I was told that I'd have to go somewhere else to use that option. This is not the first time I've been to this store and gotten poor responses to my questions, but it's definitely the last time I'll ever be giving them any business. The only thing they want to do is have you drop off an already labeled and packed package for pickup, asking them to do anything else is too much for them. read more

Do not send any of your packages there to be shipped. I paid for insurance to be sent via UPS. UPS lost my package and the Box Store refused to follow through with a claim to get me reimbursed for my lost package. I called UPS several times who said they never got the claim from the Box Store and the Store could just file electronically. After many months of calling the Box Store where the manager was never available, the manager flat out refused to refile my claim electronically, claiming it was UPS's fault and refused to do anything more. I have no idea if this manager kept my reimbursement and cashed it for himself. He was running a tax business on the side and never responded to emails or phone calls. We rented a truck from our local town of Elk Grove to move some items to our home in Pacific Grove. Inspite of reserving the truck weeks in advance it still wasn't ready up our arrival took an hour to gather the items we needed for the move but this was just the beginning of weeks for turmoil. The employee had me swipe my card, then enter it manually into their kiosk, then he called it in to verify it. At that very moment I turned to my wife and stated "this is the fuck around"!!! I was pissed that it took so many steps to get this part finished with so many steps. Just days later I noticed all kinds of strange charges to my account!!! This has really f@&$ my day to day transactions and these guys scam and clone your card!!! So now let's get to the shitty rental truck!! It had so much play in the steering wheel I could barely keep it on the road, which mad for a very unsafe white knuckled drive then add the wind storm to the situation that evening it took 5 f$&@ing hours to get from Elk Grove to Pacific Grove!! As much as possible, I try to support local businesses. With this in mind, I called them on Monday, asking them about their notary service. I was told their notary person was available weekdays between 7 and 9:30 am. I visited the next morning for notary services. The person who does the notary told me he was too busy preparing taxes and he would not provide the service. Besides, he added, he didn't bring his notary book. At least he referred me to the nearby UPS store. I was in and out of there in less than five minutes. I suppose the $15 fee was not worth it to that gentleman. The more significant loss for this small business is I will never patronize them again and advise others not to conduct business with this establishment. read more

I'm okay giving them one star because almost everyone there is nice and helpful except the owner, Scott. I don't believe I have encountered anyone as rude as he is in a long time, especially in business. I was shocked he felt it was okay to address another person in the manner he spoke to me. I dropped off a package to the store to be shipped late Friday and was told it would be shipped Monday, which was fine. On Wednesday, when tracking hadn't updated, I contacted the store. I was speaking to one of his employees when mid-sentence the owner took over the conversation and began yelling at me that they weren't making money off me, I have wasted too much of their time already, there was nothing he could do to help me, "it wasn't his problem" and I needed to call UPS. He went on a long tirade about me making up fantasies in my mind. Keep in mind I was simply trying to ask three questions: 1. Did UPS pick up on the Monday holiday. 2. Is it possible my package is still somewhere within the store still. 3. Are there security cameras inside the store. The owner literally yelled over me to the point where I was only able to ask question #1 and then he refused to answer it. After I called UPS and they started an investigation, my package miraculously showed up on tracking within Sacramento. Make your own conclusion. I love to support small local businesses, being a small business owner myself, but in this case I have to say I can't recommend them. The Box Store advertises "Open 7 Days" and today is Sunday which should be open from 10am-5pm, its 10:13am and still not opened? There is no notice on the door. Also their prices for boxes are surprisingly high compared to the UPS store. They charge for everything like styrofoam peanuts and "fragile" stickers. FedEx puts a fragile sticker on your package upon request for free. The workers are nice, but its still expensive. read more

I've used this store many time before with great service and prices. Today I stopped to mail a small envelope to Fair Oaks, CA. The employee told me regular USPS mail would be $11.00. I told him do they charge the same as the Post Office, he said they might have a cheaper rate but it would take 6-8 WEEKS to get there. I thanked him and left, went across the street to the Elk Grove Post Office. I mailed the package First Class Mail for $4.00 and it will be delivered on Saturday. They also provided a tracking number. I'm not sure if this employee was new or trying to make some extra money. This was my go to rental spot (once a month or so) They have issues, but I like to support local business. After today NEVER AGAIN. I rented a truck that had issues shifting (over the 5 mark rpm and heating up) I took it back and got laughed at. They said it was my fault "they don't drive like a car" and wouldn't switch it out. I thought they might be right and took it again. THEY WERE WRONG I had to call roadside, Bolts were loose keeping it from shifting it got less than 4 miles to the gallon because of the issue. I missed my job was on hold for way long waited for roadside way long and blew my day because they wouldn't take it right back the first time . They call at 5:45 and said don't pick up the truck because someone returned the truck with a broken mirror. So the next day I get a call saying " why did you bring the truck back with no gas"??? I would never recommend this store. I had dropped off a package to be scanned in to be mailed on June 24th. The package was not scanned in and was lost. When I called FedEx they confirmed the store never scanned in the package. I had stopped by the store today July 8th to try and locate the package and the store manager was being very rude to me. He stated that I needed to call FedEx and that they couldn't help me out because the package was picked up by FedEx and the FedEx driver did not scan the package in. I asked if the store had scanned in the package and the manager told me that they do not scan in packages and advised me to go to FedEx as they not able to help me locate the package. I informed him that I had already called FedEx and FedEx informed me the store never scanned in the package as being dropped off. I had then asked to speak to the owner and the manager refused and told me the owner would be unable to help either. He was very rude and unhelpful. I would never trust this store with packages again! Should they have been helpful in even trying to look it up in their system which they did not I would've never left this review but that was not the case. I even had the tracking return label (photo below) and tracking number and they were still unwilling to look it up. I was told to leave the store and put in a claim with FedEx. The bad reviews are correct. Worst customer service ever. I had reserved a truck and was asked for a alternate phone number for a contact. I was told that the owner needed to physically speak with the person at the number they specified. I was told it was uhaul's policy (a lie). The real reason he alluded to was he had a truck stolen. I informed the owner my contact was outside but did not have a phone. This was not acceptable to him. I told him this was bullshit. He then threatened to not rent to me and I told him to cancel my transaction. He then threatened to call other dealers and tell them not to rent to me. I told him he should, my money is good anywhere. I left his store and went to a uhaul dealership on Elk Grove Florin where I rented a truck. Went here to find a large packing box. I was standing in line waiting for assistance but the boy who was working (he had brown hair and blue eyes) decided to walk away even though he looked at me and didn't care to acknowledge me. therefore, i went and helped myself and I picked one from off the shelf (since the boy that was working wasn't of any assistance) and i gently opened it to see the depth and he yells "don't open the boxes because it's hard to put back on the shelf once it loses its shape". I went ahead and decided to purchase it anyway since i really needed a box and the conversation was very short. the price for the boxes in there are OVERPRICED for sure. if you're able to, I would just ask retail or grocery stores if they have any extra boxes left over or just try the UHaul store. I'll never come here again since his attitude was disgusting and the lack of customer service is pitiful. Avoid this store until they clean up their disgusting act. read more
