I visited the Subway located inside the Flying J truck stop and I was thoroughly disappointed. The…read moreservice was lackluster and the staff seemed more focused on penny-pinching than customer satisfaction. I asked for two small cups of garlic aioli, something that should be a simple request. Instead, I was told they couldn't give me two because "that sauce costs $7 a bottle." It's baffling to think that the owner of Flying J is worth around $4 billion, and yet these employees are trying to save him a few cents on sauce. It's just a little garlic aioli! I expected better service and a more customer-friendly attitude, especially in a place that's frequented by travelers. If they're this stingy about sauces, I can only imagine how they handle other aspects of their business. Overall, a disappointing experience that I won't be repeating.

I make it through these parts a couple of times a year and this will definitely be a regular stop.

I had to wait outside until my husband arrived. I later find out it was due to a senator and his entourage of security coming in to eat. I did sit down and looked at the menu. Asked the waiter if the chicken was fried fresh. He said no. I asked if there was another item on the menu that was fresh. He said no. I asked again if there was anything on the menu that was freshly made in the kitchen. He informed me that everything was prepared elsewhere, frozen, and brought in. I decided to leave the restaurant. I would not eat in a restaurant that everything was prepared and thawed out to eat. And the menu prices were extremely high for already prepared food. Such a cute town and nice idea for a restaurant. However, why would you not make your own food?

Plus, the prices on the menu were really reasonable, and the variety of sides got my attention. So I decided to give it a go. The joint was really hopping at one PM, with quite the line of hungry patrons. I selected the three tender box with side and honey biscuit and dipping sauce all for $7.50. It was the perfect snack size for me AND my husband, lol. The employee behind the counter was both kind and efficient. I liked the taste of the food a lot, though I will say it could've been hotter (it had been sitting awhile under the heat lamp, I imagine). I also want to give a shout-out to the On the Run employee (an older fellow) who was hanging new signs out front on the windows, because he overheard us talking about adding some oil to our engine, and said that if we couldn't find the right blend on the shelf then he'd look in back and find it for us. He also gave us a handy waxed paper cone to serve as a funnel so we could add half a quart without making a big mess. Truly he didn't have to be so helpful to us, he could've just focused on his task, but instead he hopped in to make sure we were taken care of. That was above and beyond what I typically expect at a gas station. So big thanks to him.
