The owner is always so friendly and knowledgeable about all genres. There is something for everyone, and they have a great trade in program.

I went in looking for a Ursula K. Le Guin book this afternoon- unfortunately I had no luck but the staff was really friendly when I asked them about it. I ended up finding another novel anyway after looking around for a bit. It was fun looking through all the shelves they had. It's a small store but it is PACKED with used books (and a small section of NEW books) to choose from. They have everything organized into different sections; they had westerns, historical romance, general romance, young adult, sci-fi, war, non-fiction, kids, classics, you name it! There are a looooot of paperbacks of romance and historical/war novels, which I'm not personally into, but whenever I go I'm usually still able to find a contemporary novel I've been searching for. It's fun to hunt for used books in here! Plus they give you a bookmark with your purchase :) It's not my first time going to this store -- I grew up in the area so I'm well acquainted with it -- but I was surprised to not see many reviews on here for it. The owner is friendly and helpful. I will also be bringing some of my books to un-haul for store credit. Great little bookstore to go hunting around for gems in. Came here to offload some of my books to clear up space in my bookshelf. She only takes paperbacks but I was able to get some store credit for them. Overall it's a cute/cozy place to trade books and see if there's anything new every once in a while. read more

They only take paperbacks because they have limited space, but their book trading policy is great. Great little hidden gem. The staff was super helpful and very friendly. You can bring in old books and they will give you money toward future purchase. As a huge fan of used bookstores I have patronized The Book Rack since I moved to CA. I have always been happy with this shop, until now. I've bought both new and used books and things have always been fine. They went down hill when I took in some books to sell. They took about 2/3 of the stuff I brought in. Typical. No one ever takes everything so I was perfectly happy with 2/3. The value came to $30. The woman then informed me that the way they work their trade is that you can only cover half the cost of any book in trade and must pay cash for the other half. Further, the credit is only good on used books. I haven't run in to this before. In fact, in the other four states in which I've lived, if you had a credit you could apply it to purchases until it was used up. But since I'd already schlepped in the books and since I figured I'd use it eventually, I went ahead and accepted the terms. I recently checked in with The Book Rack looking for a copy of Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. They had one copy which I asked them to hold for me. When I inquired about the price and asked how much of that would be covered by my credit she said she'd check to make sure I had enough on my card. Imagine my shock when she returned to the phone and told me she had no record of my credit anywhere! A $30 credit down the drain! She said she'd search her records and call me back but she never did. So I guess that's it for The Book Rack and me. I won't be giving her anymore of my dollars or my books. read more

I've lived in this area my whole life and never knew this place was here! I read way too much but the hobby has been getting expensive so I've recently set out on a second hand bookstore treasure hunt. It's nice to find a place that sells cheap novels in good condition. The store is small, but it has a pretty good selection for fiction readers (that's me). Its tidy and well-organized--which is something I appreciate as the other bookstores I visited earlier were kinda gross. They have a trading book policy here, making their books even cheaper. They order new books if they don't have what you're looking for, and the staff was really friendly/informative. I got several books for the price of one that day. It is what it is, a good second hand bookstore.That's enough to make me come back for more soon. read more

I used to come here all the time when I was younger with my mother (ten years ago or so). I stopped back in today to see if it was still the same....and oh my book worm heaven! It is true they have mostly paperbacks but that doesn't bother me at all. They have everything stocked in genre sections for easy scanning and they even have chairs for you to sit in while you look. All the used books are half off the listed original book price and they have some new books for 20 percent off. The lady behind the front desk told me they offer trades and can keep your name on file for credit! She also said that you can rent books too! This place was everything I remember! I absolutely love the book rack. This place is a true gem in La Verne and has a true vellichor and wonder. This book store has a great variety of books and is super well organized! Each category is labeled on the book shelves. The owner is wonderful as well. She is helpful if you want book recommendations. I find that the prices are good and the options are immense. The energy of the store is so great, I could literally stay there for hours and browse and stock up on books for the year. It is absolute book worm heaven every time I go in. She sells romance, fiction, nonfiction, westerns, sci-fi, thrillers, young readers, and so much more. There are approximately 1010300 words in the English language and yet I cannot string the words together to truly describe how much i adore this shop. read more

Went in here with my godson to look at the used kids books. I'm a big used book buyer so I know how much they usually run. My godson found a book he wanted called "my first saw". We decided to purchase it figuring it'd be cheap since it's so small. Well when we went up to buy it it turned out to be 1.91 which is already kind of pushing it for a small used kids book. After paying and leaving, we found that the book had originally only cost 1 dollar brand new!!!! What a rip off!!! If you're going to sell used books, sell them at used book prices please. I was impressed with the selection of books, but I thought the prices would be cheaper ( i am so used to thrift store prices). This store basically has used books, but in good/great condition (she is very picky) that are half off the original cover price. She does give good credit for books you bring in, but she does not take all books. I will probably be back, but I do not like paying $8 for a really old book. I can browse for hours! They frequently have new books and it's like being on a treasure hunt! Sometimes I even find books they didn't know they had ;-). You can trade in unwanted books fire store credit, but the only downside is if they already have the book in the store and don't think it will sell, they won't buy it.
