Whenever we visit cities outside our hometown area, we always look for bookstores ... used books or new. On this visit to Charlotte, NC we stopped in at the Book Rack. Besides a focus on mystery and thrillers, they really had most genres covered. Most of the books here ... and they claim tens of thousands of books ... are used, and are generally on consignment from somebody. So quality varies, and you might find two copies of something in very different conditions and at matching price points. That being said, the selection was exceptional and well worth investigating. The Book Rack had an especially large selection of kids books ... which was great for us. The only downside of some of these large holdings is that they aren't all classified and organized. Sometimes a certain genre will just be stacked in crates or boxes ... but don't let that dissuade you. There are treasures to be found here. I feel like I found a gem and wonder where have I been. This is a little bookstore that sells new and used books. I mean can this get any better. First time I went. I brought two books on house plants and planting in containers. I couldn't find any pies making or pound cakes baking books that were on my list but I emailed them to today to ask if any of these are available. They replied right away. Even though they didn't have the books I wanted. The customer service was great. They're willing to reserve these books if those come in. This is the type of place I could spend all day. The Book Rack is packed with books some used and some new. There are so many adventures. I've called ahead several times to see if they have a book I need. They have put some on hold and directed me in the correct area when I've come in for others. I love the stickers up front at check out that change seasonally. Everyone has been super helpful and friendly each time I've visited. They do have a reward program but it requires you to keep your receipt and bringing it back for the reward. Decent bookstore in Charlotte with a good selection. Very well organized in sections, prices are a tad high for used books, from $5-7, the condition not so good in some cases. They do have a $1 section and some om racks outside. As a general observation, their selection is somewhat in the middle for a used bookstore, not great if you read a lot, not the worse. They can call if they get in a title you're looking for, which is nice. Big parking lot, water fountain inside, good shopping experience. read more

I was in the store yesterday with two grandchildren. Each of them spent $20 for books. The older woman never smiled, never commented to them at all. I spent $40. on my selections and got the same unwelcoming attitude. I would rather buy from Thrift Books or Ebay. read more

A great bookstore! The people working there were incredibly welcoming, yet they let me peruse on my own time. The books are organized really well here - both by genre and by author's last name - meaning I could easily scan the shelves to see if they had what I was looking for. I ended up not finding anything I wanted, but I was impressed with their selection and organization so I'd definitely return in the future. Pricing seemed a little all over the place - I found one book in pretty poor condition listed for $6, while a different one in far better condition (albeit a different book) for much less. Overall it seemed the used books were no more than $6 from what I looked through. They also have used books in a separate section and discounted from list price, which I think is a nice touch. There were a lot of books in the romance section for fiction, and a large portion of non-fiction was dedicated to religious and worship texts. There's obviously a lot more, but if you're in the market for either of those you'll find a lot. read more

So. Many. Books. I really didn't intend to buy anything. I thought I might just take a look inside, nose around, and leave. Instead, I found books and I bought books. Books in reasonable sections and the shelves (at least in fiction) were in alphabetical order by author. Easy enough and I was surprised to find two from authors I like that I'd not seen before. I am so excited that I found The Book Rack! I was out exploring the area since I just moved here and happened to stumble upon it. Since I am a huge reader (AKA book nerd) I had to stop and go in. I could spend hours in a place like this. They have everything you could want and they have great prices. You can also sell back your books to them which is awesome for someone who reads as much as I do. read more

I forget that this store is here even though I live pretty close. I was running errands and decided to stop by here. I asked the lady up front what area the baby books were and she personally showed me. They had a good selection of board books. I bought 5 books including two that were on my bucket list. All in good condition. Most of the prices are half off the original retail value or cheaper. I spent a little over $20 and I have a $5 credit for next time since I spent $20. Fabulous useful used bookstore on Park rd, South Charlotte! I enjoyed all my visits to the Book Rack, near Food Lion and 51 on Park Rd. If you like bargains, call and ask them to find a book and they're so friendly to keep it on file & follow up if they have to track it down for you. The prices are usually about half for newer NYT bestseller books. If you're a book lover like me, you can trade books and get store credit for some books. If they want to trade, your store credit counts for a partial percentage and then you have to pay the other amount. For example, if the book is $10 and I have used store credit for a few dollars, then I pay approximately $6 for the rest of the price. They focus on high traffic genres like mysteries, romance, sci-fi, NYT bestsellers. Also they have a good children's book section in the back I find useful for gifts. read more

You gotta love this little independently owned and operated book store, especially if you have school age children. It has been our go-to location for 20 years for our kids summer reading. Literally LOVE the Book Rack! I always forget to come here and then I remember it and want to just move in and live there. They have soooo many books. It's pretty organized but definitely don't go in in a rush looking for one specific title. If my memory serves, there are 2 other used bookstores within the city limits. This one is my favorite. It's always comfortable and well organized. The staff is great. I have a habit of reading books that have more than 10 in the series (J D Robb), and I love that when I shop here, they see in their system if I've already purchased the same book prior. Life saver! I wanted it right away, and I was flying into Charlotte to drive to Charleston, so I found this great store. I am a life long bibliophile and a great fan of used books. I've been visiting Book Rack for over 20 years and three locations. I have so far resisted the pull of e-books because I am an old soul. Judging from the steady stream of customers a Book Rack during my visits, I am not alone! BR has a large selection of genres, housed comfortably in their newest Charlotte location. You can trade in used books for store credit, and every receipet has a 10% off coupon. All books are price half off publisher's list price. There are always clearance and best seller sections too. I love this place! It's super cute and everyone there is really helpful with finding books you might be looking for. If they don't have one, you can ask to be alerted when they get it in store (and then you get first pick at it!) Having said that, it doesn't seem to be the most organized - some of the books are on shelves adjacent to the ones they're supposed to be on, and I asked for a couple of Margaret Atwood novels a while ago and haven't heard back yet. But that's part of the charm of a cute little bookstore such as this. Basically, in short, it's adorable. If you're looking to find something specific, you're probably better off with amazon. The store is kind of small, and there's not a whole lot to choose from. They have new and used books, all separated into their various sections. But the whole wall of romance novels kind of ruined it for me. In fact there were so many romance novels they had to separate them into sections (historical and modern). Now I have nothing against romance novels, they just aren't my thing. I really like this place... It's not the best used book store I've ever been into, but it's a quaint little place and the people who work here are really awesome people. If you are looking for used books of various genres (nothing too old) then this will be a great little pit stop. I like to stop by if I'm heading over to Viet Thai or Musashi's and I've placed a to go order I am waiting on. I took my grandmother here a few months ago and found a group of books from an author I used to collect. My copies have started falling apart and I grabbed what I thought I needed. Unfortunately it wasn't the right one and they had already sold the right one when I stopped by later to get it. So they kindly took my name and number and said whenever they came across it again they would give me a call. I obviously had forgotten all about it and then yesterday they called me up and said they had it behind the desk for me. How awesome is that :-) The prices can't be beat and you can really find some gems if you search. It is small as some people have claimed, but it's a great place to exchange books and find new things. I highly recommend giving it a try. I absolutely love The Book Rack. With thousands of books to browse, this store is definitely the place to go to find something you didn't even know you were looking for! You'll find that most used books are around 5 or 6 dollars. Even new books are discounted down from market price. The staff is very helpful and friendly. Want a new book but they don't have it? Let them order it for you and save a few bucks rather than go and buy from the chain book store (plus you will be supporting local business). I often stop by The Book Rack even if I'm not looking for something in particular; however, I almost always walk out of there with something! A book on the shelf catch your eye? Grab it, have a seat in one of the chairs, and check it out! And hey, it's probably only going to cost you a few bucks if you find a keeper. The Book Rack is squeezed in older shopper mall in Pineville, behind the Chili's and across from the Burlington Coat Factory. While not a destination for used books, you can a decent mass market paperback for sale or a nearly new "new" book for around $7. I visit this store once in a while if I have nothing better to do. Its geared toward female readers-every type of romance you can think of plus mysteries, popular literature, and some African-American and horror. Mostly paperbacks. The non-fiction section is an afterthought in the back of the store and not much better than a thrift store's selection in that dept. The service is generally good. I've had several positive experiences with a young clerk and a negative one with older crank....I mean, uh, clerk. They can hold particular books for you if you're looking for a "new" book and they don't have a copy. I asked them to call me if they got a particular book and they did a few weeks later! Impressive. Their book buying policy is convoluted-you get partial store credit and partial cash. So if you try selling books, you gonna end up with store credit. Hope you like Harlequin romances.... read more

This is a pretty nice used book store. They have a large selection and the staff are friendly/helpful. I don't like their credit system for trading in and buying books but I understand it might be necessary to make money. I think Book Buyers down by Midwood Plaza is a much better and affordable used bookstore. With that having been said, I would still rather shop at The Book Rack than a big chain. read more
