Whenever we visit cities outside our hometown area, we always look for bookstores ... used books…read moreor new. On this visit to Charlotte, NC we stopped in at the Book Rack. Besides a focus on mystery and thrillers, they really had most genres covered. Most of the books here ... and they claim tens of thousands of books ... are used, and are generally on consignment from somebody. So quality varies, and you might find two copies of something in very different conditions and at matching price points. That being said, the selection was exceptional and well worth investigating. The Book Rack had an especially large selection of kids books ... which was great for us. The only downside of some of these large holdings is that they aren't all classified and organized. Sometimes a certain genre will just be stacked in crates or boxes ... but don't let that dissuade you. There are treasures to be found here. If you like books and enjoy the hunt, this place is for you. Recommended.

I brought two books on house plants and planting in containers. I couldn't find any pies making or pound cakes baking books that were on my list but I emailed them to today to ask if any of these are available. They replied right away. Even though they didn't have the books I wanted. The customer service was great. They're willing to reserve these books if those come in. I love the Friends Books on Main store. The store features incredible donations of used books, cds…read moreand DVDs that are in excellent shape and priced right. Most DVDs and cds are $1 each, with some multi-sets priced a bit more. Books are typically $4 each but some are a bit less, some a bit more. You can get a pretty new book for just $4. The store is only open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays but that's plenty of time to browse for some excellent bargains. The store is staffed by volunteers who are always cheerful and helpful. I highly recommend Friends Books on Main.

I thought, well then, I can buy a used book or two to gift as a holiday gift. I always want to support the underdog, especially a used bookstore just before the holidays. Well, I didn't find any book that I wanted to give to anyone as a holiday gift but I found a used CD audiobook (Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson) for just eight bucks! I have a CD player in my car. So glad that I happened to find this place!

I think it's like 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory' for book readers. Just an amazing array of all kinds of books of literally every subject both old and rare to almost brand new. The owner Lee was lovely and introduced herself and we enjoyed a good chat about favorite books. Another thing that makes this space so special is the kitties who run the store... books and cats - I'm in heaven!
