The book space itself is just average for Marin (I miss my fancy big public libraries in small town Connecticut!), but there is something really special here: The Shop. The Shop is an all-ages Maker Space with almost everything you can imagine to create: a row of sewing machines, knitting and crocheting materials, paint supplies, all sorts of arts and crafts materials, and a full wood shop! I have a sewing machine, but can't work it and hate sewing. It's much easier for me to bring any kind of mending project (I irrationally volunteered to mend some classroom chairs) to the Shop on a Wednesday or Saturday, when a sewing librarian is there. My younger daughter has loved experimenting with sewing here. And my older daughter loves tinkering with the glue gun, foam, fabric, and other supplies. Kids 8 and over can actually stay at the shop during open hours without parental supervision. When we have gone, I've always seen industrious, creative, responsible kids and pre-teens there hard at work. What a great space for young people who often don't have a set place in public spaces, where most events/ places are focused on adults or toddlers/ preschoolers.

Lots of staff always milling around to answer your questions and help choose a good book, movie or whatever. Today I went and was asking about some books on cars for a toddler. The volunteer was so kind, she showed me a lot of information about the search tool that I hadn't known. I am familiar with the library online tools and requesting books etc but this was so helpful. She then went into the back and found some really neat books that both my sons loved! It was just nice of her to do, that is very common here. They do story time during the week and weekends for kids, I don't think they do that for adults though. Self checkout is a breeze, I've helped other people with printing a receipt etc. Don't bring your dog though, or food. Best of all its free! Way to go Novato Library!!!

I saw an earlier comment here about the lack.of adult programming in this branch and I'd like to…read moreecho that concern. I believe Novato.is the largest library in the Marin system and the librarians there offer the least amount of programming for adults. I am a senior and I don't drive and if I can't get a ride to another library I miss out. Fairfax and Corte Madera are too far.away. Why is there such a lack of balance in adult programs? During the next several weeks here's whats being offered: Civic Center branch - block print workshop, tech help, writing workshops, altar making program, master gardener talk. Corte Madera Library - tech travel tips, Angel Island history talk, coping with grief talk. Fairfax - meditation, program for being an ally to trans youth. Other libraries - computer help, Monarch Butterfly presentation. In comparison the librarians at Novato during the next several weeks are offering their monthly trivia game and a movie showing of Psycho. Please offer more! Kudos to the volunteers who maintain the book groups and the staff person who runs the conversation clubs. They are the ones connecting with the community, not the librarians!

Maybe I'm just spoiled because my small-ish hometown in Connecticut has one of the best public libraries I've ever seen and is bigger and probably with more resources than all the libraries I've been to in the Bay Area (this is the third county I've lived in here) put together. The pop-up library at Northgate, however, gives me hope for the San Rafael Public Library. This pop-up, which opened in December, is housed in a small mall storefront. And yet, somehow, this little library manages to make the most out of the space. In fact, there are more spaces and activities for children to participate in than in the main library. For young kids, there's a small play area with a few toys, a reading space with bins of board books, and also a drawing table. For older kids, teens, and adults, there is a 3 D printer and a virtual reality station. This is really brilliant. Every time I've stopped by, I've seen teens come in straight from school to sign up for a time slot to use the virtual reality headset. What a great way to engage this age group! While the collection is only, as one of the librarians described it to me, a "browsing collection," meaning there are too few books for you to come with an idea of what you want, there selection is always varied and engaging enough for me to come home with something. And the first time I stumbled upon the space shortly after it opened, in just about 15 minutes I saw more than one person wander in and get a library card for the first time. I would love to see this space become permanent and expand.

The small class sizes transformed challenging upper division courses from weed outs into collaborative, professional experiences. I am especially grateful to Dr. T. Johnson, Dr. M. Shortly after graduating in Spring 2025, I accepted a full-time position as a Bioprocess Associate at BioMarin. It's really heartwarming to see a community come together to support local businesses. Downtown Novato has really transformed into a Norman Rockwellian town with a modern twist. Regardless of the gourmet restaurants and chic shops, this town still retains its old school charm and values. When you walk into a store, most people know each other on a first name basis; families are still dining together; people are still walking their dogs and pushing their baby strollers. In these bleak Covid times, towns like Novato give me hope that we're all gonna get through this together. If you haven't been to Novato in a while, you should reward yourself with a visit soon. I think you'll be just as pleasantly surprised as I was. Keep up the great work, Novato!
