The staff here is extremely knowledgeable and helpful without being overbearing. As an immunocompromised individual I'm always looking for businesses which still provide hand sanitizer for customer use and who have employees who are courteous about customers who wear masks. I find this a very professional attitude to show concern for other humans. I've been to this bookstore twice in a month and am happy to say I'll be back soon. There's nothing like the smell and feeling of a fresh, new book in my life. They also have a beautiful selection of Tarot and Oracle decks. read more

I walked into Copperfields hoping to find a white elephant gift. I spotted a woman standing there watching me. I said hello and explained that I was looking for help finding a white elephant gift for a coworker. I asked for some suggestions. Her response was, "I don't know your coworker." Seriously? I barely know my coworker either. Needless to say, she was no help at all. I ended up turning around and helping myself since I clearly wasn't going to get any assistance. As I was leaving, she said something like, "I'm sorry if I offended you," without a smile. Great. I went down the street and walked into two other stores, explaining the same white elephant gift dilemma. At both stores, the retail clerk took the time to walk me around their store, offered ideas and suggestions to see what might work. Of course, I ended up buying the gift at one of those stores. Novato Copperfield may want to consider training employees to be more helpful when customers ask unusual questions-but then again are white elephant gift questions in December really so out-of-the-ordinary? Just now I searched for "white elephant Christmas gifts" on Amazon and found a ton of somewhat amusing suggestions. I'm not a Prime member and I tend to avoid all thing Amazon, but at least their algorithm/AI is actually helpful... read more

Very wholesome and inviting place. Please take some time to check this store out. I would of stayed longer if there was a place to sit down and read. The staff is courteous and friendly but not overbearing. Each member said hi once, and let me be. And I'm glad because I just didn't feel like small talk today. There was more than just books: puzzles, artwork, soaps, socks, among other things. Bought 2 books, one from the displays in the center and the other from the bookshelves on the far right. There are plenty of recommendations from staff posted on the bookshelves, so you don't have to guess or even ask for help if you don't feel like talking to humans that day. Haha. This is the type of bookstore you can maybe make a new friend with locals. People do genuinely seem friendly. Enjoy! read more

One of the great shops in Downtown Novato. I was worried that they wouldn't survive the pandemic but when I drove past them on my way to lunch with the family I had to go in after lunch and support them. With the pandemic going on they have a greeter as you walk in and they offer you some hand sanitizer and make sure you're wearing a mask. They've modified their floor plan for a smaller retail presence but I didn't mind. They still have a lot of selection of contemporary and socially current selections. In the Age of Amazon, its a blessing we still have awesome bookstores still around. I'm not someone who reads a lot, very rarely actually. But I do like browse through the Sale racks in case anything does catch my interest. This time, Peanuts book filled with 5 minute stories. It was on sale for only $7! I wasn't looking for this specifically, but I knew it was a perfect gift for my 4 and 6 year old niece and nephew. Its just fun to browse books and find something interesting. Can't do that on Amazon. read more

This is such a wonderful bookstore, my husband and I take our daughter frequently. Most everyone is friendly but I had a very negative experience this afternoon when I came in alone with my daughter and an employee (see photo of here attached) was incredibly rude. She constantly walked by us in the children's section, didn't greet us at all, and gave my 5-year old daughter and I dirty looks. My daughter was well behaved so I don't know if her attitude was because she doesn't like children or if she doesn't like people of color. I asked her politely if there was a problem and she walked alway without response or acknowledgement. I can deal with dirty looks but I think it's awful that this bookstore employs someone who is unkind to children. I hope this woman finds work where children are not subjected to her bad attitude. I have a friend who experienced similar treatment in the San Rafael location when she visited with her daughter a few years ago so I'm not totally surprised by this. read more

A cute shop, and definitely some gems to be found here. It really seems odd with half the shop empty. I understand the landlord is waiting to rent out the other side of the space. I don't think this bodes well for Copperfield's Novato, strangely. The selection was very small and there seems to be a deliberate political slant to every book. Where's the diversity in content, thought, opinion? The employee featured in the review below also gave us weird, dirty looks, cut her eyes at us, and seemed quite annoyed at our presence. So, this appears to be an ongoing issue with her, regardless of what you do. It seems it's mostly kids items now, which is great, but a big focus on politicizing of children, which I don't really care for. But lovely toys, notebooks, candles, cards and handicrafts. Go if you need a last minute gift for someone's new home or toy for a birthday party! I'd love to see a diverse array of political opinions, ideas and arguments presented, along with more local authors, travel books, and a robust spirituality / religion section. read more

I was greeted when I walked in. Headed to the children's section and began looking for a specific book for a special young man. I spent a good ten minutes looking for the book before giving up and just walking out. The person who greeted me had came back over to the children's section while I was looking and didn't bother to see if I needed assistance or if she could look up the book for me to see if the author is even one they carry. For a smaller chain store I would have hoped for better service than the big box book store. I was mistaken and will continue to shop elsewhere. read more

Copperfield's is eyecatching because it is located on a great corner in the busy part of Novato. The curb appeal is great...you walk up to the entrance, which is not located on the street side but set back around the corner, and you are instantly struck by how charming it is...they have books on carts in front where there is a huge owl sculpture thing...real cute. Inside is even neater. Everything is well organized and they have a lot of seating scattered throughout the shop...even a section with a farmstyle table and a wingback chair. The best part is the children's section. It is colorful and chock full of books from bedtime stories to Pokemon guides. They have a good selection of brainy games for kids too. Copperfield's also has a good selection of sale books which looked to range from $5.99 to $8.99. Now these aren't just any books...these are really nice hardback books like the Kite Runner and Sue Grafton books, etc. They also have a nice little section of odds and ends like candles, novelty socks, bookmarks, soaps, etc. The prices on these items are a little high but exactly what you'd expect to see at like a Barnes and Noble. This place really is charming and I could've spent hours here. I will definitely be back! If you have some free time I highly recommend dropping by this store...if not to buy, definitely to browse. read more

Independent bookstores are awesome and the entire Copperfield's chain is a superlative North Bay presence in the book scene, but I thought I'd write a review especially for the Copperfields in downtown Novato. Ever since the grand-opening, which I attended, this store has become a source for many pleasurable things. There is a jigsaw puzzle and gaming section, which has added a few new activities to our social life. There is a well-stocked newsstand of glossy publications catering to many different topics and interests. And then there is the amazing blank journal and notebook selection. I first bought one of the beautifully embossed Peter Pauper editions last summer to serve as my garden journal. Another ring-bound notebook has become a indispensable household resource. Yesterday, I went in with the intention of buying a simple one for professional use and I was very particular in what I was looking for. Having the opportunity to hold and compare from the many choices available was exactly the experience I was missing earlier in the morning when browsing online. Although I wanted simplicity, another amazing Peter Pauper caught my eye. Using 11th century Persian art for its cover design and with silver shining along the paper edge, this was just too beautiful to pass up! There was also a big display of journals and notebooks ideal for upcoming Valentine's Day gifts, along with the appropriately companionable books of romance and poetry. When paying for my purchases, I learned that the buyer for Novato Copperfield's selects the journal and notebook stock with great care and attention to quality. It really brought home for me what a brick and mortar store can truly offer over the internet: all of the journals I bought at Copperfields are no doubt available on Amazon, but then so are many, many others -- inferior or more expensive or not quite what I want -- and the experience of finding the right one can be a long slog of click and scroll. At Copperfield's, a dedicated bookseller had assembled a selection that seemed to have something for almost everyone -- I need to think about who would love one of the beautiful Asian silk covered ones as a gift -- and the simple pleasure of browsing through these, feeling the turn of the page and the weight of the volume, made for a lovely rainy afternoon. read more

Very excited to see the Grand Opening happening tomorrow at Copperfield's Books, Novato. The new bookstore opens at the corner of Grant Ave and Redwood Ave. The corner store location is at the new Umpqua Bank Plaza. Copperfield's is a real asset to the town. The store is well-lite, spacious and modern. It's been great to see the store's progress over the last few weeks. We've watched the signs change, the paper coming down from the windows, the books off-loaded from vehicles, and finally the shelves being stocked. The store is finally opening, and it's like Christmas to local residents. the first-floor space can accommodates up to 6,505 square feet of retail space. It will be great to have another location for locals to migrate to in the evenings. I hope the store will stay open until 8 p.m. every night. The town of Novato has anxiously awaited the opening and we look forward to the ribbon-cutting ceremony tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. Hope you can join the fun and refreshments. read more

Service is always really pleasant. They ask if they can help and then leave you alone, which is honestly how I like it in a bookstore! A lot of other reviews complaining about the service here and gotta say, after living in Marin my entire life, I'd wager this is more a problem with a lot of Marin and Novato people being unstable and unreasonably entitled than anything wrong with the staffing of the store. I've also been frequenting this store since it opened and I've never had anything close to a bad experience. read more

Love this bookstore. Large children's section, great selection of staff picks throughout the store, cute gift selection (I love the funny socks though my husband is sick of receiving them. I still think he needs the rainbow merman ones though), board games (more Settlers than Monopoly thank goodness), decent sales tables. The friendly staff has ordered books for us more than once, rather quickly. I go here more now that I am trying to rid my life of amazon which I surprisingly do not miss. As an avid reader I love seeing retail bookstores, as they seem to be a rarity in this day and age. I've gone back to physical books after trying digital eReaders for the past few years, so this store opened it was a welcome surprise. Copperfield's has a large selection, I've always been able to find what I am looking for and the staff been very helpful on all my visits. I especially love seeing the "Staff Picks" -the younger generation may not remember Staff Picks, but its something that I feel was lost w/ the digital age. There is an impressive selection of children's books but Miss Margaret is what really makes this place special. She read my girls a story and played a bunch of games with them. At the register when I asked about gift receipts they offered to wrap them for me at no charge.
