Very wholesome and inviting place. Please take some time to check this store out. I would of stayed longer if there was a place to sit down and read. The staff is courteous and friendly but not overbearing. Each member said hi once, and let me be. And I'm glad because I just didn't feel like small talk today. There was more than just books: puzzles, artwork, soaps, socks, among other things. Bought 2 books, one from the displays in the center and the other from the bookshelves on the far right. There are plenty of recommendations from staff posted on the bookshelves, so you don't have to guess or even ask for help if you don't feel like talking to humans that day. Haha. This is the type of bookstore you can maybe make a new friend with locals. People do genuinely seem friendly. Enjoy!

One of the great shops in Downtown Novato. I was worried that they wouldn't survive the pandemic but when I drove past them on my way to lunch with the family I had to go in after lunch and support them. With the pandemic going on they have a greeter as you walk in and they offer you some hand sanitizer and make sure you're wearing a mask. They've modified their floor plan for a smaller retail presence but I didn't mind. They still have a lot of selection of contemporary and socially current selections. If your'e in the area I would suggest stopping by!

"Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read." ― Groucho Marx It is not wise to try to prove Groucho wrong about the inside of a dog; however, it is wise to make time for your best friends outside of one! Should you decide to do that, Copperfield's Books offers a very nice option. You'll find a large collection of books along with a friends of books friendly atmosphere where you can sit down and go through a few pages of the book(s) you are considering to purchase.

Rude employee

This is such a wonderful bookstore, my husband and I take our daughter frequently. Most everyone is friendly but I had a very negative experience this afternoon when I came in alone with my daughter and an employee (see photo of here attached) was incredibly rude. She constantly walked by us in the children's section, didn't greet us at all, and gave my 5-year old daughter and I dirty looks. My daughter was well behaved so I don't know if her attitude was because she doesn't like children or if she doesn't like people of color. I asked her politely if there was a problem and she walked alway without response or acknowledgement. I can deal with dirty looks but I think it's awful that this bookstore employs someone who is unkind to children. I hope this woman finds work where children are not subjected to her bad attitude. I have a friend who experienced similar treatment in the San Rafael location when she visited with her daughter a few years ago so I'm not totally surprised by this.

Cute entrance...

Copperfield's is eyecatching because it is located on a great corner in the busy part of Novato. The curb appeal is great...you walk up to the entrance, which is not located on the street side but set back around the corner, and you are instantly struck by how charming it is...they have books on carts in front where there is a huge owl sculpture thing...real cute. Inside is even neater. Everything is well organized and they have a lot of seating scattered throughout the shop...even a section with a farmstyle table and a wingback chair. The best part is the children's section. It is colorful and chock full of books from bedtime stories to Pokemon guides. They have a good selection of brainy games for kids too. Copperfield's also has a good selection of sale books which looked to range from $5.99 to $8.99. Now these aren't just any books...these are really nice hardback books like the Kite Runner and Sue Grafton books, etc. They also have a nice little section of odds and ends like candles, novelty socks, bookmarks, soaps, etc. The prices on these items are a little high but exactly what you'd expect to see at like a Barnes and Noble. This place really is charming and I could've spent hours here. I will definitely be back! If you have some free time I highly recommend dropping by this store...if not to buy, definitely to browse.

Beautiful simplicity and made in the USA!

Independent bookstores are awesome and the entire Copperfield's chain is a superlative North Bay presence in the book scene, but I thought I'd write a review especially for the Copperfields in downtown Novato. Ever since the grand-opening, which I attended, this store has become a source for many pleasurable things. There is a jigsaw puzzle and gaming section, which has added a few new activities to our social life. There is a well-stocked newsstand of glossy publications catering to many different topics and interests. And then there is the amazing blank journal and notebook selection. I first bought one of the beautifully embossed Peter Pauper editions last summer to serve as my garden journal. Another ring-bound notebook has become a indispensable household resource. Yesterday, I went in with the intention of buying a simple one for professional use and I was very particular in what I was looking for. Having the opportunity to hold and compare from the many choices available was exactly the experience I was missing earlier in the morning when browsing online. Although I wanted simplicity, another amazing Peter Pauper caught my eye. Using 11th century Persian art for its cover design and with silver shining along the paper edge, this was just too beautiful to pass up! There was also a big display of journals and notebooks ideal for upcoming Valentine's Day gifts, along with the appropriately companionable books of romance and poetry. When paying for my purchases, I learned that the buyer for Novato Copperfield's selects the journal and notebook stock with great care and attention to quality. It really brought home for me what a brick and mortar store can truly offer over the internet: all of the journals I bought at Copperfields are no doubt available on Amazon, but then so are many, many others -- inferior or more expensive or not quite what I want -- and the experience of finding the right one can be a long slog of click and scroll. At Copperfield's, a dedicated bookseller had assembled a selection that seemed to have something for almost everyone -- I need to think about who would love one of the beautiful Asian silk covered ones as a gift -- and the simple pleasure of browsing through these, feeling the turn of the page and the weight of the volume, made for a lovely rainy afternoon.

Vast selection at great prices: Over 60 categories of donated books--fiction, nonfiction, cookbooks, children's, history, collectibles--plus CDs, DVDs, sheet music, and puzzles. Hardcover novels run around $3, trade paperbacks $2, mass-market paperbacks about 75¢, and clearance titles as low as 25¢. We were here on July 1st and they had books on American history on sale. The Book Place in Novato offers a treasure trove of affordable used books in a friendly, community-centered environment. Every purchase or donation helps enrich Marin County's library offerings, so it's a great spot for both reading lovers and those wanting to give back.

This is a Friends of the Marin County Library store, which means that volunteers lovingly keep the place clean and organized. All of the shelves are clearly listed, with price lists adorning the walls. Some of the books are even discounted further (individually priced on the cover), with an entire back room marked as Clearance (along with the carts outside the front door). Clearance books are mostly $1.00, and most everything else is under $5.00. Community members frequently donate items so the shelves are refreshed regularly. Each time I come by, I always find at least one or two titles to take home (and usually more than that)! There is free street parking, as well as a parking lot in the back of the building. And they only take cash or checks.

It is small but packed with a nice mix of used books and the prices are really easy on the wallet. I have found everything from fiction to memoirs and kids' books here. It is always a fun surprise what you will come across. The store is super clean and well organized which makes it easy to find what you want without feeling overwhelmed. I love that the books are sorted by genre because it just makes the whole experience more enjoyable. They have two entrances you can use to get inside. One from Pine Street and another from San Anselmo Avenue. Town Books is located in the Courtyard building at the end of the hall so it is easy to find once you know where to look. The people working there are absolutely lovely. They are so friendly and welcoming that you instantly feel comfortable walking in. They are always happy to chat or help if you are looking for recommendations and you can tell they genuinely enjoy being there. Also they appreciate book donations. They accept gently used books during open hours in limited quantities about three boxes or bags per household. They also accept DVDs and CDs in their original packaging. They do not accept cassette tapes, vinyl records, magazines, games or puzzles. The nice ladies toward me that all profits from the sales go straight to supporting the San Anselmo Library so shopping here feels really good. If you are ever in San Anselmo and want to spend some time with good books and great vibes this is definitely the place to check out.
