My favorite bookstore in Petaluma! Copperfield's operates as a well oiled machine and I feel lucky to have them in our community. Chester helped me search for books from my list and ordered one for me. I purchased a few other nonfiction and fiction novels that caught my eye. Downstairs is an amazing used section that can also be accessed from the alley if stairs are difficult. I found sale books (comparable deals to online vendors) and even walked away with a t-shirt that I will gladly wear. I could spend all day at Copperfield's! read more

Very large and convenient book store in downtown Petaluma. In fact you could almost get lost in there, whether it be lost because it is so big with an upstairs and downstairs and just simply lost in a bunch of books. Staff is also friendly and helpful with assisting you locate a particular book. Sonoma and Marin County residents are very lucky to have such multiple locations throughout. read more

Gigantic book store with two levels. The bottom floor is their used book section and not as accessible for individuals with disabilities. You may have to access the downstairs on their back entrance to enter that way if you can't do stairs . Wish more Copperfield's books were more like this location with their diverse selection of used, sale and author section. read more

So many books, Heaven. Downstairs is a many aisles of used books for reasonable prices. Upstairs there are new books with space to roam without bumping into others. Some nice calendars and other items, but the focus is on books. Close to other stores, so you can make a day of it. Being in a shopping area, there is parking nearby. I got a spot easily in front of the store itself. Found two interesting books to being back to my collectionn at home. What will you find?. read more

This is an amazing independent book store, part of the 9-store Copperfield's Books in the north bay counties (Marin, Sonoma, Napa). With both a main floor and downstairs area, and great customer service and knowledgeable store staff, this is a wonderful bookstore to visit. On top of that, they are very supportive of local authors. I know because my wife, Annie Fox, now has her books in the store. They have an ongoing program of author Meet & Greets, where you can talk to a local author and buy a signed copy of their book. Of course, they can also order any edition of in-print books for you, in case you don't want to feed a certain massive online bookstore. Support your indie bookstores! read more

I visited Copperfield's Books in Petaluma, CA [140 Kentucky St] on Saturday, 3/1/25, around 3:15 PM. What stood out to me about this place was the huge offering of books from different genres as well as unique products. The entire bookstore was spacious and gigantic, especially with the underground space. It was nice to stroll around and look at different books, whether it was rare or new. At the end of the visit, I decided to purchase the 3D Wooden Sunflower Puzzle. Copperfield's Books is a wonderful place to check out. I highly recommend coming here. read more

A lovely two story bookstore. Harkens back to Borders with that nostalgic warm yellow wood vibes and charm. They have a large children's section as well as a rare book section and used tarot resell section downstairs. Pretty cool that they sell used as well as new books and small gift items. I enjoyed my visit and hope to visit again someday. read more

We stumbled upon this gem while we were walking by. The bookstore is pretty big. There's two stores the main floor that had a ton of planners and the best books. All the books I want to read were there the selection is beyond real. They also had a big kids/teen section. They had a lot of gifts for kids at a very reasonable price. I purchased some gifts for my nieces here. My son found a great collection of Pete the cat. The downstairs had used book . My husband purchased some. I was so busy upstairs that I didn't really check out downstairs. We spend over an hour here trying to decide what to get. The service was just as great. If you love books this is a must . This is one of the best bookstores I have ever been to. read more

Copperfield's has multiple locations, but this one is fun due to having more than one floor to explore! It's always welcoming, with the interior bright and airy, and plenty of chairs available so you could always find a place to sit down in good lighting to get some reading in. The store also has Wi-Fi, which is a plus. The only thing keeping me from staying too long was the lack of a cafe, but there's plenty of options next door. read more

I was blown away by how large the bookstore was - from a quiet reading area with white noise for readers to a downstairs section of used and antique books, there were books for everyone! I love the gorgeous selection and thoughtful displays of books here, and all the staff were so friendly. Free street parking is available nearby! read more

They have an excellent selection of books, magazines, puzzles, toys and other miscellaneous items.

Disappointed in their return policy. Beware of limitations should you want to make a return. I received a lovely gift book from a new neighbor on local Petaluma history that he bought from Copperfield's Books. I already had this book so went to Copperfield's, with the book still in their branded Copperfield's gift wrapping, to ask for a credit for another book. That's when the front counter person told me that without a receipt they could not accept this return. I explained that it was a gift to me. They then scanned the book UPC code and went on to say that the book had been purchased over five months ago (though given to me maybe one month ago...) and for that reason they could still not offer me a credit. I asked them to explain why this was. It was clearly purchased here, in fine condition, and they had a record of it being sold from them a few months. They explained that this was their policy. I asked why this was their policy to not accept the return of gift books without a receipt of it's been clearly purchased here. He said it was because it was their policy. So getting nowhere with them, I left with my book, scratching my head, and wondering: what's the point of shopping at a local bookstore when they can't extend common sense policies to ensure a current (and hopefully) future customer is happy? Is the fraud potential of this transaction really so great that it's worth not having me ever come back into this local bookstore? I wonder... read more

Treated very rudely by the bald bookseller at the register. Basically told me to go away while I was trying to buy a book. He said he was busy doing something. I walked out without buying anything. Will never go there again. read more

We found this store by accident when we were out antique shopping! What a great find! I do love a good bookstore!! Employees were super friendly and the space is well lit and kinda quirky in a good way. I loved the vibe. Big magazine section and lots of books. Everything was well organized and easy to find. I wish we had more time. Next time we're in Petaluma we'll plan to stay a while. Metered street parking - but plentiful. read more

I've heard so many great things about this particular bookstore, but never had the pleasure of actually going in. This particular day I had off, and I got to wander in and out of this amazing classic bookstore! I loved it!! They actually had a huge section of discounted books in the front with everything from toddler books to gardening! I actually found some really great painting books for one of my Classroom children, as well as some great reads for my first and second grade children within a poetry sector. I love the layout of this bookstore. It's very homey and comfortable and I felt as if I could spend the whole afternoon there! They were a couple of people stocking things, and they asked me if I needed any help and I told them I was just grazing. They seemed to love their job and laugh And started organizing everything. This particular bookstore was very well organized, and had literally something for everybody, children, stickers, games, journals, calendars, and even magazines! I will definitely be back here again!!! read more

Saw this store the other night while having dinner in Downtown Petaluma, and was intrigued, but it was closed. Went back during the day, and it was a great find. What an amazing book store. Too bad they don't have any like this where I'm from. They had decor scattered throughout, and even had large butterfly and dragon kits hanging in the store. The childrens book section had school shirta from the local elementaries hanging up. What a beautiful store. Ended up walling out with a cookbook and a meditation book. What a delight! read more

Copperfields is the ideal local bookstore. New and used floors. Cute good rotating throughout the entrance. Robust children's section. Well-curated fiction, non-fiction, and cookbooks. Friendly and helpful staff along the lines of what you would expect in a bookstore (I say this as a former bookstore nerd myself). Cheerful, open layout. I've spent so many joyful browsing hours here. read more

Pre-COVID-19 a few years ago, I attended a cool author event here. The author of the Tales of the City series, Armistead Maupin, spoke and signed his latest book, "The Days of Anna Madrigal". There are uniquely great books and gifts to choose from here, from journals to pens. The staff are helpful. It's a great independent bookstore experience. The bookstore is currently offering curbside pickup and gift cards. If you're in Sonoma County, I highly recommend this stop. read more

I have fond memories of going to Vromans Bookstore in Pasadena to 'hang-out' the way kids do in the mall. I did the mall thing too but Vromans was more fun since I could a)get a coffee at the in-house cafe with a dollop of the housemade whipped cream b) have a quick read of some of the hottest books off the press. Copperfield's is my new Vromans. It a double-decker bookstore, filled with books, journals, news publications, calendars and so much more! Each visit to Copperfield's is akin to walking into your neighborhood library. You know, on the days when you walk in with the title and author of the book and the librarian proceeds to educate you on the significance of the writer, their style and historical or political importance at the time of writing. I have called ahead to request a book be held and was pleased to know they can hold for a 3 whole days y'all! I do wish they had a system where I could search for a book location on my own. Sometimes a girl just wants to be in her head and not have to ask for help. Keep in mind it is a brick & mortar store so don't go expecting to find Amazon prices here. You will not. But if you are willing to support a small, local, bookstore your purchase price goes a long way in the community. There is an entire wing dedicated to infant, children and young adult. In a small section just near that area you will find all manner of international newspapers, journals, and magazines. Downstairs has used, first edition, hard to find and signed books as well. When I walked in yesterday I was thrilled to see African American authors on display for Black History Month. This speaks volumes for me, so mad props to Copperfield's for supporting BHM! All in it is always a good experience at Copperfield's, I am glad they are in town. read more

This store is gigantic! We had limited time, so I only had time to explore the main floor. Great selection of books! Everything is well marked and everything was easy to find. Great selection of books and lots of diverse representation!! Picked up a few books I'd never seen or heard of before and cannot wait to dive in! Staff was very friendly and quickly responded to staffing the registers when the line got longer at the front counter. I cannot wait to head up to the area in the spring and spend more time in this store and explore the used book section! Store was very clean and welcoming! read more

This is strictly about the "basement". (The previously loved section) I have a bunch of bibliophiles around me so whats not to love when the kids are expanding their reading levels at a great rate and being able to get a good deal on some of their favorite series. Both have loved getting lost in the kids and young readers section. We even found a couple of books about the Beatles. Some are a bit over priced for used- even for a very niche selection. Parking can be a little testy as they often have markets or a street fair in the downtown area so be sure you plan ahead so you're not grumpy when you are redirected 3 different ways before giving up or finding a spot. read more

Upstairs has new books, downstairs has used and rare books! I've always loved this location; I could quite happily lose an hour or two wandering around the shelves. Went here yesterday for the first time and were dismay how a young worker bothered an old man who were wearing a face shield by telling him to wear a mask after he said he has a medical issue and even told the manager. We don't like the dirty look and attention you're giving him instead of you guys concentrating on your work. I don't see anybody bothering the old guy aside from you guys who's keeping an eye on him. You should have took your break if you don't like seeing that vulnerable very old guy! Ohh and it's not the first time you did this with a customer after seeing your yelp reviews! read more

I have seriously over looked the rude staff at this store for years because I want to support small, locally owned businesses. I come here regularly & pay almost twice as mush as I would online. But that's over. I watched a staff member chastise a young woman who had briefly pulled her mask away to un-fog her glasses while reading a book cover. It was obvious what she was doing and I caught the whole thing. There was no one within 15-20 ft of her. The cashiers tone was absolutely uncalled for and the girl left. I caught the cashiers exchange with another staff member mocking her. It was extremely unprofessional and I also left, never to return. We are all trying to navigate this pandemic. He was rude and judgmental and the manner in which he handled that situation was abhorrent. Do better Copperfield's. read more

This bookstore is a treasure and an institution! Super helpful staff by phone and in person. They always have the book I seek

Is it cheating if I already wrote a review for another Copperfield's? This was my first visit to the Petaluma location (I grew up/went to school near the Sebastopol location, occasionally visited Montgomery Village, and recently also visited the San Rafael location) and it did not disappoint. I also wouldn't be surprised if this is the largest location of the chain. Outside, adorable children were singing carols and playing ukelele, which only added to the Petaluma charm. I loved seeing the 'empathy' themed window display with related books & gifts. Downstairs: used/rare books. Upstairs: Spacious children's section, small event space/reading area tucked in the back, cards/notebooks/gifts, new books, etc. To nitpick for a criticism, I'm always a little off-put in a business with signage requiring me to check bags (like this one), but thankfully they did not ask me to check mine. It's so stuffed already, I couldn't steal anything if I wanted to! read more
