Helpful staff and amazing book selection! I love that it is a local business and is not as commercialized as some of the big branch stores.

This independent book-store has two-levels. The basement has rare and antiques books that you can't find elsewhere. The main-level is your basic book-stores with the adult section on the right, a huge collections of current magazines in the center and the young adult and kid's section on the left. There wasn't too much on True Crime books, because I've read most of them and Petaluma is a friendly and family city without any crime. "I'm not a THUG either!" I recently got addicted to Stephanie Meyer's Twilight series and the young adult section has a huge displays of her series of books. Also, the kid's section is very popular where neighborhood kid's do a lot of reading and having fun. I became a kid again, when I was at the magazine section and reading and salivating on the newest Playboy magazine. And on the cover, Heidi Montag is on the cover of the upcoming September Issue. Many of the locals looked at me like I'm a "dirty Asian-man"! "Hey, I'll be an 'dirty' Asian Man until I'm a 'dead' Asian-man!" This place is about eight times the size it appears to be from the street. I'm new to the area so I was unaware the store is two floors. The top floor has a somewhat sparse collection of the latest releases plus a large children's area and an extensive magazine selection. Downstairs is a great mix of used books as well as rare first and signed editions. I wish they carried more fantasy and science-fiction but the used options are better. read more

If Pegasus books, Barnes and Noble and Papyrus got drunk one night - had an orgie and then 9 months later had a baby, it would be Copperfield's What a great bookstore! One you can get lost in for hours browsing through not only the typical newest releases and sale books, but an entire downstairs of used, rare, collectible, autographed, first edition books. I think I spent an hour just browsing the giftables section of journals, candles, magnets, stationery ... I've been giving a lot of thought to fate and wondering if things happen for a reason. Just the night before I made a new friend whom I spent a long time talking with about books. He told me about a book which I picked up at Copperfields. Then in browsing through the used book section, I found same said book for half the price! The lady at the counter raved about the book and said that it's the first time she's seen this book turn up in the used section and so it was my lucky day. Indeed. read more

I was with 2 kids, so I only made it to the kid section... which was GREAT! totally huge, diverse selection-- very well curated, not a bunch of junky movie/toy tie ins (pet peeve!). awesome space for kids to hang out for hours to read & play. my kid was excited to get not one but TWO different books signed by the author, so I imagine they have lots of readings/signings here. the books tables on the way in peaked my interest... but alas, I did not get to browse. One of the best things in downtown Petaluma. Not just is this an independent bookstore, it's a fantastic independent bookstore. I have nothing negative to say about this gem: Knowledgeable and friendly staff, a great selection of both new and used books, and plenty of gifts/cards to boot. As a pretty serious reader, I often have a conversation with a staff member on a book we've both read. I always send our out of town visitors here. read more

My favorite bookstore! I found a little felt stuffed animal of the cutest mouse I have it hanging in my room! I also discovered a vegetarian cookbook here that I am mesmerized with and now have a favorite cook book author I would have never known unless I came here. "Bad attitude" permeates this establishment. I mean, don't get me wrong, there are some very nice people working here too. But the best of them are just that, at best: nice. They don't bowl you over with warm welcomes and can-do service. Hardly. I suspect it's an organizational culture thing---that the top management consists of some uptight wounded individuals who set the tone for the whole store. (For perspective, the Copperfield's in Sebastopol has a lot less attitude.) There's an old adage: "A family is a tyranny ruled by its sickest member," and a business works that way too. The book selection here is just fine. But I figure, why suffer the company of smug haters when Amazon will cheerfully sell you the same books without issue? I suppose this bad attitude thing is somewhat of a tradition in bookstores, a natural consequence of collecting people who are smarter-than-your-average bear, though perhaps too smart for their own good. And/or maybe it's a Petaluma thing to be cooler-than-thou. If you pay attention next time you're in this store, you can detect a bit of covert hostility and resentment emanating from those who know so much but are not properly rewarded by society. It's kinda like having all the smarts of a librarian... but without the service ethic. read more

This is about the USED BOOK section downstairs - never had a problem with the upstairs staff. I'll keep this to a simple set of bullet points. 1. You must make an appointment according to their convenience, often weeks out. 2. We showed up to our appointment only to be told first "no you can't bring anything down here unless you have an appointment." vs. a more polite "do you have an appointment today?" 3. We brought four bags of books. Three of them contained one 14-volume set of a series from 1936. Nope they will only take two bags or boxes at one time. Three of the bags are ONE SET of 14 volumes. Nope. Only two bags. If we had put all 14 in one box, plus the other bag it would have been fine. So the two-bag rule makes no sense at all in this case. They finally let us leave the set of 14, in three bags, but made us carry the final bag up the stairs back to our car on Kentucky. 4. My mother (age 80) asks when she can bring the rest of the books. Not until August. We are moving out of town this Wednesday. 5. Of course the books were not accepted, so my 80 year old mother has to go back and get them. They tell her to go to the alley in back. There is no visible sign or doorbell, so she knocks loudly. The woman comes out and irritatedly tells her "there's a bell." The bell is at the top of the door, taller than my mother's 5'1" height. 6. My mother, again, 80 YO, asks for help to bring the books to her car. After heavy sighs, eye rolls, and tons of 'tude, the woman says "well I can't carry all of them!" My mother actually has to tell her "I will carry one." Ho-rrrri-ble. Awful. Very very bad experience. Lest you think I'm just a random ranter (and if you've read this far), I am a customer experience strategy consultant and have been for 20 years. If Copperfields were my client I would tell them to fire the used book staff in Petaluma. Rude, officious, totally lacking in empathy. I don't care that they didn't take our books. I care that they made my mom feel like crap for no good reason. Shame on them. read more

There is truly, nothing that can replace the smell and feel of a book. And, Copperfields is full of them! I am so grateful to have this treasure of a store in Petaluma. Living outside the US for 6 years, we were mostly relying on our kindles. This made me miss books even more. Kindles are reliable and a good way to read on the road. But, I love a book. Copperfields has filled this need. Their upstairs is dedicated to New Books and a great collection of Greeting cards and small gifts. The downstairs is a great, used book jamboree. Not only can you buy them but, you can also sell books to them for cash or store credit. You need to make an appointment FYI drop off up to, two boxes of used books. They call you a day or so later snd let you know how many books they can resell and how much, you receive for them. You will agree to pick up books they don't use. The credit can be used on sale items and used books. The people who work at Copperfields, seem to really enjoy reading and sharing their suggestions too. We love, Copperfields. read more

This is everything you could love in a local bookstore. Great selection, attractive displays, involvement in local events, guest authors who visit, book signings, a used bookstore downstairs, and lots of games/knicknacks/accessories/stationary/etc. I love their suggestions shelf for when I'm feeling ambivalent about my reading choices. The layout of their store actually makes sense. I also love how their literature displays follow national/local themes, so whenever you go in, there are a lot of choices for you to browse. The downstairs bookstore is operated separately from the upstairs store, but it's definitely worth taking a look. There's a lot of really old pieces of local history for sale, like old advertisements, match books, comic books, first editions, and so on. And best of all, they feature local art from schools, contests, and local artists in their window displays. This includes the cat photo contest they hold every year. Copperfield's is a great bookstore .Books are great! The clerks upstairs have a propensity toward surly attitude. I will give Ray a shout out for being the exception but have had snooty service from others. Down stairs is fun and the clerks less than friendly. Overall I would visit a book store with a nicer more accommodating staff. read more

An excellent book store! New books upstairs, used books downstairs. Great selection of periodicals although I am sad they seem to keep reducing the selection of French and German language magazines. They have book readings and other special events, the kids area is kind of fun, the sales tables contain interesting books. Since I have been shopping here for so many years, I can say that the prices of the used books are really quite high now, so I rarely purchase them any more. In previous years, I used to buy oodles of them. It used to be such a pleasure to walk down the ancient stairway into the basement and peruse so many good, used books. NOW I stick to garage sales for my used book purchases. The bathroom key situation is a really inconvenient drag as its located on the side of the counter and the restroom is so far away. I am no longer able to take my mother there as there are very few parking spaces near the store and the restroom situation exhausts her. I really miss the Sebastopol store. read more

I love this bookstore chain. But I love this location especially as it is the one I grew up with. I have spent many a summer afternoon getting lost in this store waiting for my dad to come pick me up. The best books I own came from here. My most prized possession is the hardback copy of Gone with the Wind WITHOUT Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable on the front. It's seriously the best book I own. Well it probably actually ties with one of my Tom Robbins books (also purchased at Copperfields) but still it was the one I searched hardest for. This is a book lovers bookstore; it has everything you want. New, used, trade, clearance books, author events, and book clubs all of which have never disappointed me. I've heard that this was the best used book store in the county, so I thought I'd find out for myself. I only came here to try to find some books used, instead of buying them new on amazon. [Their independent vendors are crooks, just like on fleabay!] I couldn't find what I was looking for here, like I always did before at their used store in sebastopol. So I looked around upstairs, in the new section, & spied some very expensive German refillable pens on sale for 1/2 price. Naturally, they didn't have any refills for the one & I wanted. So I asked the squirrel girls working there where I could find them. They said try staples, they should have them. But when I did, they never even heard of the brand before. I really liked their used bookstores in sebastopol & santarosa, but they're not around anymore. They were much better than this one is. read more

What a fantastic bookstore! Upstairs is the new stuff and downstairs is the used and rare items. We found all sorts of reasonable priced treasures for the kids! Everything from geography to stories. If you are a bookstore nut and have been to Logos in Santa Cruz, it's similar but a lot nicer. If you love books, find it, visit it, and enjoy it! read more

Decent selection, friendly and pleasant staff - just super pricy. While I'm happy to support independent local booksellers, and am happy to pay a bit of a premium to do so, the prices are really really high. I honestly wouldn't have minded paying MSRP or even a premium on top of that. But, we're talking double the price of what you would find on online. read more

When things get slow down at Monarch, sometimes I step out and head over to Copperfield's. It's one of the few places to get a quick shot of culture in Downtown Petaluma. Actually, let me qualify that even further: the magazine racks are the best dose of culture. Somehow the books leave me wanting. But that damn magazine rack saves the day. read more

When we lived here, we were here every week. Now it's one of our 'must-sees' every time we travel here on vacation!!! Beautiful handmade card selection (made by local artists, not Hallmark!)....including local scenery. A well lit & very well stocked magazine section (on every imaginable topic); great kids section; books: mainstream, as well as thought-provoking & local interest; and a whole basement of used books to get lost in!!!! It feels like home. ......now if they'd only get listed on Yelp as an 'independent bookstore' or 'bookstore' in Petaluma search!!!! I had to 'search this map area' to find it!!!! I love bookstores. Love them. I even have a "Top 10" rules about what I consider an outstanding bookstore: 1) Independently owned (i.e. no big national chains) 2) Great layout, with ease in finding what you're looking for 3) Friendly, silent, non-obtrusive staff 4) Ease in placing an order with said staff if item is not in-store 5) Warm and inviting, including lots of places to sit 6) A decent amount of gift and souvenir items, but not too many 7) A real understanding of their locals and tourists demographic, and stocking items accordingly 8) Clean, but not sparse 9) An understanding that graphic novels and manga deserve to be on shelves too 10) Eye-catching window displays Copperfield's fulfills almost all of these criteria. I wish they had more comfy places to sit, but I can forgive that considering that they have a wonderful used and rare section downstairs. read more

If you've got tots this place is awesome for them taters. The kid section is comfy and has loads of material to select from. It's well lit as well. Downstairs is the used section and again, great spot down there for the children as well! I know right? Wtf? The staff are friendly, super duper friendly. They also host book signings so if your a tween and wanna stalk your most fav author! U can totally do that! Awesome magazine selection. I've never had a bad experience here. This book store has been here a long time. And I've been coming in for years. They generally have what I am looking for and sometimes things I'm not looking for and don't realize I need it until I see it. They will let you come in and sit and read as long as you want. I've never been hassled at all. I've read an entire magazine in here and not been bothered. The staff is fine. Not intrusive or salesman at all. They also have a whole basement full of used books at low prices. I've found some really cool stuff down there. Overall this is a great place to kill some time or find basically any book you want. Used bookstores are like intellectual rivers where the ideas that inform a community flow from one mind to another. If you go downstairs at Copperfield's Books in Petaluma, you'll get an idea of what I mean. Upstairs at Copperfield's is a very nice new bookstore that will meet the needs of almost any book shopper. But, if you descend the stairs to the lower level, you will find some treasure. Here are books that have been read several times, likely by many different individuals. The people that read these books: know how to rebuild engines; can identify all different kinds of mushrooms; can decline Latin verbs; understand the psychology of barnyard animals; love horror fiction; are big fans of William Faulkner; can cook anything; fly planes... and so much more. These people have learned a lot of things from the books down here and can probably converse about them fairly well. A good used bookstore is a treasure in any community. Copperfield's is that for Petaluma. Every town should be so lucky to have a good bookstore with a great used section. If we can save the used bookstores, then we can save ourselves. read more

Their children's section is an oasis of the nicest books, board books for babies, activity & sticker books, the old Golden Books from long ago. Even if you can find a book cheaper online (which is questionable when you add in shipping!) the experience of browsing books here is unbeatable. And they gift-wrap with elegant wrapping paper for free. You can't get that on Amazon! I love the staff, they're patient, friendly and helpful. read more

I love food, hot cider, and outdoor seating. Nothing makes outdoor seating and nursing a delicious drink better than a good book. So I get through a lot of books, and go to a lot of bookstores. This is the internet age though, so 90% of my book purchases are online, this is one of only two brick and mortar bookstores I still go into physically because I still love it so much.
