The kids' section is in front -- bright covers, dragons, detectives. But fiction is the draw. Novels lined like soldiers. Quiet covers that hide big stories. You take one down, read a page, and know you'll need it. The layout is for browsing. The kind of shop where the table displays are edited like good sentences. Bezos would cry here. He'd ask why they don't carry toasters. A bookstore should have a pulse like this one. I might join the book club, if they'll have me.

If the book I want is not in stock, they order it and call the moment it arrives. Great place, buy a book and then go to one of SA downtown's wonderful coffee shops or the park and enjoy your read. I felt like I was an uninvited guest, or like maybe he would pounce if I reached for a book. Strategically, I never reached for a book or really looked at them, I simply walked slowly through, turned around and walked slowly back out so as to not upset him any more. I came back one more time (everyone has a bad day, right?). Same deal. I even had an old book in my hand from my late father to show him, but I didn't try. I think I will leave him a surprise present one day just to see if it makes him a bit happier.

I've been to other bookstores that benefit local libraries, and normally the collection is so sad. I'm an avid fiction reader, and pretty picky, and in their fiction section they had tons of great books published in the last couple years that I have loved (for around $5 for most books) In the travel section I found a fairly recent guidebook for Montreal which will be awesome for our upcoming trip. My husband couldn't stop raving about the 4D? John Wick DVDs he found for cheap that he said would easily go for 10x the price on Amazon. We also found lots of cute books for our toddlers that were 2-3 dollars each. Overall, very small shop but some great finds!!

Susan was great and a Bay Area treasure. I entered her early teddy bear contests back in the late 70s and wish her well in retirement! As I read through reviews here 98% are 5 star positive but I see a few that made me realize what Susan also put up with over the years. Completely clueless basic mall zombies that called the store dusty or cluttered when it was a beautiful artful well themed museum of antique toys and bear travel (the theme of her books). With everything for sale, how much fun! One off base reviewer even thought she didn't get proper service because she was black, how precious, off base and hackneyed is that complaint. Especially if you know one of Susan's most popular books and matching teddy bears (she designed with the Steiff Company) were all about traveling in Africa! Those that got it will really miss this unique toy store that was in a class by itself. Thank you Susan for 40 years of preserving the lost craftsmanship of our past!

Or an Egyptian sarcophagus from a set design for Indiana Jones next to a sizeable camel stuffie. Or an antique Underwood typewriter in its case or a set of illustrated journals of a bear who has traveled to Paris, to Egypt, to the Chelsea Flower Show in London, to Africa! However, you had best be prepared to be ignored. I went in with the idea that I might actually invest in a treasure, and I was prepared to pay for it. Sadly, yet understandably you can't look at anything, and you certainly can't touch anything. You must ask the clerk, which would be fine if she didn't totally ignore you! I asked specifically about a piece of illuminated text, she didn't even get up. I was told it was double sided, and a couple hundred bucks. I was really really interested in investing in it... but she couldn't be bothered to show it to me or tell me the accurate cost. I might go back, because as I said, these things are wonderful and special and worth the expense; but I would have to be prepared to be a more aggressive shopper, which doesn't sound like me.
