You take one down, read a page, and know you'll need it. The layout is for browsing. The kind of shop where the table displays are edited like good sentences. Bezos would cry here. He'd ask why they don't carry toasters. A bookstore should have a pulse like this one. I might join the book club, if they'll have me.

It is small but packed with a nice mix of used books and the prices are really easy on the wallet. I have found everything from fiction to memoirs and kids' books here. It is always a fun surprise what you will come across. The store is super clean and well organized which makes it easy to find what you want without feeling overwhelmed. I love that the books are sorted by genre because it just makes the whole experience more enjoyable. They have two entrances you can use to get inside. One from Pine Street and another from San Anselmo Avenue. Town Books is located in the Courtyard building at the end of the hall so it is easy to find once you know where to look. The people working there are absolutely lovely. They are so friendly and welcoming that you instantly feel comfortable walking in. They are always happy to chat or help if you are looking for recommendations and you can tell they genuinely enjoy being there. Also they appreciate book donations. They accept gently used books during open hours in limited quantities about three boxes or bags per household. They also accept DVDs and CDs in their original packaging. They do not accept cassette tapes, vinyl records, magazines, games or puzzles. The nice ladies toward me that all profits from the sales go straight to supporting the San Anselmo Library so shopping here feels really good. If you are ever in San Anselmo and want to spend some time with good books and great vibes this is definitely the place to check out.

I enjoy the Mysteries, Short Stories, and Essays. I asked a man where I could find them and he just said, "they're all in their respective sections." Hmmmm, I'm guessing Mystery section, so I go there and can't find it. A young lady came up and was helpful, she located the Short Stories. But the man just continued putting new books on shelves, he clearly could not be bothered to help a customer who was clearly not able to find the other volumes. So, Books Inc is still the best, I'll shop at their stores. This is fixable, Copperfields!

I've been to other bookstores that benefit local libraries, and normally the collection is so sad. I'm an avid fiction reader, and pretty picky, and in their fiction section they had tons of great books published in the last couple years that I have loved (for around $5 for most books) In the travel section I found a fairly recent guidebook for Montreal which will be awesome for our upcoming trip. My husband couldn't stop raving about the 4D? John Wick DVDs he found for cheap that he said would easily go for 10x the price on Amazon. We also found lots of cute books for our toddlers that were 2-3 dollars each. Overall, very small shop but some great finds!!

Susan Hoy is the sole proprietor here, and she's been running the business for around thirty years. She's also an author, having written a series of "fictional diary" books featuring Steiff Teddy Bears, who go to Africa, the Chelsea Flower Show, Paris, and the Nile, which she displays and carries in the shop and online. We have come in at times and not been greeted by Susan, but on our recent visit she came out from behind the counter to share her story with us, showing us her favorite things with pride and we made a human connection. Our verdict is that is a passion project run by a true original, and some might say eccentric. Susan creates replicas of actual antique greeting cards that she sells, and offers a remarkable collection of vintage mercury holiday ornaments. All the things that Susan loves fill this unusual shop. She's also managed to set up a blog & webstore for her shop to sell her treasures, which is almost as quirky as her bricks and mortar shop.

Sadly, yet understandably you can't look at anything, and you certainly can't touch anything. You must ask the clerk, which would be fine if she didn't totally ignore you! I asked specifically about a piece of illuminated text, she didn't even get up. I was told it was double sided, and a couple hundred bucks. I was really really interested in investing in it... but she couldn't be bothered to show it to me or tell me the accurate cost. I might go back, because as I said, these things are wonderful and special and worth the expense; but I would have to be prepared to be a more aggressive shopper, which doesn't sound like me.
