Love this library. The children's area is complete with a small stage, puzzles, games and a giant stuffed gorilla that the kids can read to. I worked with two librarians who helped me set up a new account and gave my daughters these little bracelets. Love it :)

The book space itself is just average for Marin (I miss my fancy big public libraries in small town Connecticut!), but there is something really special here: The Shop. The Shop is an all-ages Maker Space with almost everything you can imagine to create: a row of sewing machines, knitting and crocheting materials, paint supplies, all sorts of arts and crafts materials, and a full wood shop! I have a sewing machine, but can't work it and hate sewing. It's much easier for me to bring any kind of mending project (I irrationally volunteered to mend some classroom chairs) to the Shop on a Wednesday or Saturday, when a sewing librarian is there. My younger daughter has loved experimenting with sewing here. And my older daughter loves tinkering with the glue gun, foam, fabric, and other supplies. Kids 8 and over can actually stay at the shop during open hours without parental supervision. When we have gone, I've always seen industrious, creative, responsible kids and pre-teens there hard at work. What a great space for young people who often don't have a set place in public spaces, where most events/ places are focused on adults or toddlers/ preschoolers.

The Book Place in Novato offers a treasure trove of affordable used books in a friendly, community-centered environment. Every purchase or donation helps enrich Marin County's library offerings, so it's a great spot for both reading lovers and those wanting to give back.

This is a Friends of the Marin County Library store, which means that volunteers lovingly keep the place clean and organized. All of the shelves are clearly listed, with price lists adorning the walls. Some of the books are even discounted further (individually priced on the cover), with an entire back room marked as Clearance (along with the carts outside the front door). Clearance books are mostly $1.00, and most everything else is under $5.00. Community members frequently donate items so the shelves are refreshed regularly. Each time I come by, I always find at least one or two titles to take home (and usually more than that)! There is free street parking, as well as a parking lot in the back of the building. And they only take cash or checks.

Maybe I'm just spoiled because my small-ish hometown in Connecticut has one of the best public libraries I've ever seen and is bigger and probably with more resources than all the libraries I've been to in the Bay Area (this is the third county I've lived in here) put together. The pop-up library at Northgate, however, gives me hope for the San Rafael Public Library. This pop-up, which opened in December, is housed in a small mall storefront. And yet, somehow, this little library manages to make the most out of the space. In fact, there are more spaces and activities for children to participate in than in the main library. For young kids, there's a small play area with a few toys, a reading space with bins of board books, and also a drawing table. For older kids, teens, and adults, there is a 3 D printer and a virtual reality station. This is really brilliant. Every time I've stopped by, I've seen teens come in straight from school to sign up for a time slot to use the virtual reality headset. What a great way to engage this age group! While the collection is only, as one of the librarians described it to me, a "browsing collection," meaning there are too few books for you to come with an idea of what you want, there selection is always varied and engaging enough for me to come home with something. And the first time I stumbled upon the space shortly after it opened, in just about 15 minutes I saw more than one person wander in and get a library card for the first time. I would love to see this space become permanent and expand.

Shortly after graduating in Spring 2025, I accepted a full-time position as a Bioprocess Associate at BioMarin. I got questions for City of Novato.  It has no answers…read more This review's only about how City of Novato has managed and does manage a specific 70 acres of prime land and improvements it owns because I was left with a lot of questions for City of Novato after our visit to its arrogant Marin Valley Mobile Country Club, an upscale "low-income community". https://www.yelp.com/biz/marin-valley-mobile-country-club-novato Unfortunately, as is far too common when dealing with government, my questions were either ignored, not addressed, shrugged off as not their department, or didn't know. 1. WHY IS THERE NO REQUIREMENT HERE that only people who have documented lived or worked in Novato for the previous 10 years before being allowed to move here? that all resident assets and income, including but not limited to, in other towns, counties and states are included in qualifying to move in AND to stay there? for an annual independent investigation and audit of exactly what assets and income each resident, including residents who rent out room(s) here, has? that here be a more ethnically and racially diverse population? that when a resident does a cash-out refinance or sells, that the City, who collect from these residents here extraordinary VERY FAR BELOW fair market space rent and property tax, participates in that windfall gain at the same percentage that City is collecting below market space rent from these currently privileged few who use that tax-payer subsidized gain to create elegant fully remodeled homes updated with sheet rocked walls, crown molding, dual pane windows, wood floors, plush bathrooms, upscale gourmet kitchens, high ceilings, and many other extravagant high-end upgrades according to Realtor ads and many have NO mortgage on their homes here that Zillow values from $400,000 - $800,000. 2. In 2008, upscale Marin Valley Mobile Country Club was fair market valued at either $23 million (according to it) or $31 million (per Novato city officials). Since then, its fair market value has significantly increased. To me it makes far more sense and fairness to the other 53,000+ Novato residents for the City of Novato: to NOT be in the landlord business. City has 3 dedicated Council meetings every year about just this 70 acres and improvements. City's expending extraordinary amount of public money and time on just these elite non-ethnic non-racial 315 few zealots who, at the expense of the other ethnically and racially diverse 53,000+ Novato residents, publicly flaunt their privileged lifestyle with luxurious clubhouse, indulgent salt-water pool, posh laundry facilities, library, lavish exercise room, sauna, sensuous Jacuzzi, hot tub, billiards, game room; magnificent San Francisco Bay views, beautiful expensive classic vehicles in driveways, and so forth as documented by Realtor ads. to sell at fair market value these 70 acres of prime land and improvements and put the funds towards helping the other 53,000+ Novato residents with less taxes for all, and Section 8 vouchers for those truly low-income 3. Why is there a self-righteous "Private" sign at entrance to this publicly owned 70 acres of prime land and improvements? 4. Why this small coterie of 315 bloviaters who know how to and do bend Novato government to its will getting away with their bamboozle? 5. Where's the City oversight? On This Day in History 17 February 1956 - US Coast Guard Cutter Casco saved 21 people from US Navy seaplane forced to ditch 100 miles south of Bermuda and delivered survivors, and disabled aircraft by towing it, to Naval Air Station at St. Georgia Harbor, Bermuda. Casco was commissioned 27 Dec 1941 (USN) then 19 Apr 1949 (USCG) "Casco class ships were built by Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Puget Sound, WA as seaplane tenders by US Navy. Designed to operate out of small harbors and atolls as had shallow draft. Was very seaworthy, had good habitability and long range well suited to ocean-station duty. An assessment made by US Coast Guard on suitability of these vessels for Coast Guard Service noted: The workmanship on the vessel is generally quite superior to that observed on other vessels constructed during the war. The vessel has ample space for stores, living accommodations, ships, offices and recreational facilities. The main engine system is excellent. . . .The performance of the vessel in moderate to heavy seas is definitely superior to that of any other cutter. This vessel can be operated at higher speed without storm damage than other USCG vessels. Once they were accepted into USCG Service, a number of changes were made in these ships to prepare them for ocean-station duty. A balloon shelter was added aft; there were spaces devoted to oceanographic equipment and a hydrographic winch as well as an oceanographic winch were added. After her decommissioning and return to Navy 21 March 1969, she was struck from Naval Register and expended.

I said hello and explained that I was looking for help finding a white elephant gift for a coworker. I asked for some suggestions. Her response was, "I don't know your coworker." Seriously? As I was leaving, she said something like, "I'm sorry if I offended you," without a smile. Great. I went down the street and walked into two other stores, explaining the same white elephant gift dilemma. At both stores, the retail clerk took the time to walk me around their store, offered ideas and suggestions to see what might work. Of course, I ended up buying the gift at one of those stores. Novato Copperfield may want to consider training employees to be more helpful when customers ask unusual questions-but then again are white elephant gift questions in December really so out-of-the-ordinary? Just now I searched for "white elephant Christmas gifts" on Amazon and found a ton of somewhat amusing suggestions.
