Sasha going for her mid-day walk.

We adopted Sasha in 2019, and she has been such a great companion. We were told she was originally a stray in Texas, had a litter of puppies, and was shipped up here. We adopted her on the same day we adopted a puppy, and told our son that they needed each other because the puppy was losing his mom, and Sasha had lost her puppies. She is the sweetest little girl. I take her to the dog park every day. One of her favorite things is to lie out in the sunshine when it's warm out. She's not a huge fan of the snow, though. Must be a big change from living in the south. Thank you for saving this wonderful dog!

I have been a foster for Secondhand Hounds twice and I absolutely LOVE this organization! If you're looking to foster or adopt, their Facebook page and website are so helpful for finding a furry friend - they have the cutest photos & descriptions, and simple to navigate. The adoption process is usually quick, and their staff are so communicative and accommodating to those looking to add a dog or cat to their family. They receive dog/cat supplies donations and as fosters, we're provided with any requested materials we may need to care for the animal. I've had such a positive experience with Secondhand Hounds through fostering two dogs - Betsy & Loki - during separate occasions years apart. Anitra, Emily, and the rest of the staff are wonderful and so responsive to any questions people may have as they inquire about the adoption process! Their clinic is easy to find in a strip mall in Minnetonka. It's clean and spacious, and their veterinary services are right next-door to their main location.

Mollie, our great little buddy from second hand hounds. She is 5 years old in this pick. Just hanging out thinking life is good.

We have had Mollie now for almost 5 years now. She is great and has become a great dog for me in my retirement. We have been to Second Hand Hounds with donations of Items they need. The staff is always friendly and thank full. We believe they do the best they can and are all caring people. Hard for me to believe any bad ratings...

Pebbles. My first foster dog with SHH.

The work they do is commendable. They care! They face each day with renewed concern. The four legged furry ones couldn't be in better hands

I have worked with SHH for only a very short time but they seem to be a very organized, educated rescue.

But the bio on the site, which was written by the foster who actually lived the dog said otherwise. So the director, who hasn't spent time with the dog, is making adoption decisions for them without really knowing them. We met a few other dogs and filled out an application that asked us to list multiple choices for dogs, our vet's contact information, and 3 references. The director then selected a dog (that wasn't our first choice) for us and said we'd be perfect for this dog. We met the foster and the dog and there was literally zero connection. Our references told us they were "grilled" by a representative of the agency about our fenced yard, how we cared for our previous dogs, how did they know us, and what kind of people we were. One reference was admonished for the type of collar he used on his dog. He wasn't adopting a dog from them and his trainer is the one who recommended the collar. So how was this even necessary? A representative of the rescue called our vet twice. The first time they talked to the receptionist who answered their questions. Then they called back and asked for a vet or a technician. The receptionist told me they asked the technician detailed questions about our deceased dogs health care. The technician had to pull up the records going back close to 20 years. Then we got an email from the the director who chastised us for not having our last dog neutered. Even though our vet said it was healthier for him to not be fixed. Our first dog was fixed and he had cancer. The vet said this type of cancer was typical for neutered males. Our last dog lived a long and healthy life. So our vet was right, at least based on our experience. And the dog we were assigned was already neutered. So why did that even matter? We had to do a virtual phone visit where we put Warrior Dog Rescue on a video chat and had to show every room in our home, including opening the closets. They needed to see the inside of closets "to make sure we weren't hoarding cats or cooking meth." The adoption contract states that Warrior Dog Rescue reserves the right at any time in the dog's life to check with your vet to make sure vaccinations are up to date. And if they're not, they reserve the right to "impound the dog" and you are responsible for their legal fees. At that point, we declined to adopt the dog that was assigned to us. I understand you want the dog to go to a loving home, but to put someone through all of this to adopt a pet is excessive. And we weren't going the spend the next 10+ years looking over our shoulders worried that our family member would get taken away from us because a vaccination was a week or two off schedule. And then be taken to court over legal fees. This review is based solely on our experience and here to inform others of what to expect if they go through this rescue. Fortunately, there's other options out there.

Rescue Crew

(4 reviews)

Feel so fortunate to have come across The Rescue Crew!…read more Had been wanting to adopt a pup for years, but pushing 70, thought I was too old. And the untimely death of my previous dog was still painful, even 6 years later. Besides, didn't want to do the hit and miss of going to a shelter, where I wouldn't know anything beforehand about who was available and even less about compatibility. Just the heartbreak of looking into the soulful eyes as I walk on by. Would want to take them all, whether they made sense to adopt or not. Here's where Rescue Crew shines. Available cats and dogs, kittens or puppies are posted - and statuses updated - online. Along with detailed descriptions of what works best for the animal. I don't have a fenced yard, which eliminated my first choice. I don't want to go through puppy training again (did I mention I'm turning 70? Leave that fun - and it IS fun - for younger folks) that made those adorable pups a sub-optimal pick. The pups and kitties offered have been fostered by the angelic volunteers - so the pets are not damaged, despite their rescue status. They are fully vetted (as, rightfully, are the prospective owners) so you're getting a healthy animal. They bring the pet to meet with you and determine compatibility of fit for both parties. No emotional split-second decision at a shelter (and I'm NOT badmouthing shelters. They serve an incredible function and are the sources of Rescue Crew's adorable, adoptable creatures!) Animal adoption is a serious, longterm decision and should be well thought through. Lastly, having worked with dozens of non-profits in my long advertising career, have NEVER found an organization as transparent in their funding and expenses. No one is getting rich off this. Just a true philanthropy that subscribes fully to its mission and does it well. With stats for their successes and (sadly) the one or two each month that for medical reasons, must be put down, My first adoptee - a 7 year old chihuahua who already means the world to me - arrives this afternoon (shout out to her foster mom for her great love for the pup and awesome communication with me.). Can't wait! Highly recommend.
