In the past I've experienced a not so friendly atmosphere, if you weren't a regular, you got ignored and treated like you don't belong there. I was hoping that attitude had past and was no longer prevelant. I was wrong, it's alive and still there. I love to play pool I use it as an I bracker. So I signed up for a game. I was fourth on the list. I waited and waited for my name to come up. I had one person ahead of me, two dudes walked in one stripped to bare chest. He hadn't been there 5 min and was playing pool. I had been waiting for an hour. So I guess he was more important than me. As far as I'm concerned that's cheating. I don't care how it was accomplished, It's cheating, no matter what. If you have to resort to that kind of tactic, in my book, your not a real man!!! What a pity. I guess the bar makes so much money that the owner condons it. I was so pissed off, especially because there was one man there who is like a fixture. He's been around longer than myself, and he said nothing, and knew what had tracepired. I used to respect that man. He and I both know what it was like to be ignored and not treated as equals. I'm so disappointed in the whole place. I might rate this bar 5 stars if I lived in the area and went more than once, since I very much enjoyed my time there last Saturday night. Reasonably priced drinks: check. Pool table: check. Somewhat cruisy environment enhanced by porn on the TV. Check. The crowd was not limited to one type of man (as an over-60-years-old guy, I really feel uncomfortable if I'm the only person over 40 in a bar). There were a *lot* of handsome men of all types when I was there -- probably a higher percentage of sexy men than I've seen in a bar in a long time. I only detected attitude from one guy there, and I'll just chalk that up to him being a sourpuss. I would definitely return if I return to Sacramento some day. read more

The Bolt is a far cry from the midtown gay bars, where you may see a line up of miniskirt-wearing girls lining up to get inside... and that's just the way I like it. It's a straight up dive bar with a plain storefront on an empty road in Del Paso Heights. Inside you'll find friendly funny bartenders, a personable unpretentious crowd, and some hurricane-strong drinks. Oh and a sex swing on the stage (which I was instantly and permanently fascinated by). Outside in the back there's a patio and a HUGE lawn- I imagine they can throw a hell of a party with all that space! The bartender was a total sweetheart and poured me a damn fine birthday drink- a dangerously sweet concoction that he served flambe, called the Toasted Marshmallow (but it was so damn strong, I called it the Night-Ender. I LOVE this place! The fact that Sacramento has an awesome leather bar is a wonderful thing, and should never be taken for granted. Yes, it has a dive bar vibe, but that just makes the place comfortable and authentic. Leather boots should be polished, absolutely, but never leather bars. And that's what this place really is, a place for us kinky odd ones out to meet and cruise like-minded folk. I've always felt welcomed and accepted here, and although by default I'm a home-body, when I do go out, the Bolt has been my home bar. Staff has always been friendly, even on busy nights when they're clearly rushing to keep up with drink requests. The bar also hosts a number of fun events, and provides opportunity for local leather and LGBT groups to host events and have fundraisers (typically beer busts). Only complaints I have: - They have a great fire pit in the back, but sometimes there's not really wood to keep it burning in the evening. A lot of times all there is is scrap construction lumber, which I'm always a bit leery of, as it can be hard to tell if the lumber has been pressure treated or otherwise treated with chemicals that are dangerous to breathe in. - They recently started having large buckets of peanuts around the bar, I know this isn't unheard of for bars to do, but they didn't do it until recently. Unfortunately, I live with someone who has severe allergies, and the possibility of me bringing cross-contamination home with me is potentially life threatening, so I've had to curtail my outings. If you're in the same situation, it's best to be aware. Over all a great place, if the peanuts aren't an issue for you, worth the visit. read more

The Bolt is awesome and does so much important work for the queer community in the Sacramento area. I only go to specific events because, though I am both queer and genderqueer, I respect that this is a space geared mostly toward male presenting queer men, and queer men need and deserve a safe space. My partner enjoys many events at this space. The Bolt has great atmosphere both indoors and out and they do lots of great events and holiday events. If you have a severe PEANUT ALLERGY please be aware they have peanuts in buckets that people eat. I know some people, including myself and my queer bear partner, can't currently go anymore due to that. I like the bar because the bartenders and owners try to preserve this bar as a men's space. I and my friends appreciate that. There are too few bars anymore, that are strictly men's spaces. I enjoy the expansive back yard and the patrons seem friendly enough. The service isn't outstanding but when you are caught up in a conversation you don't care. The Bolt is in an old neighborhood called Dixieanne, which is ironic, considering the rough-hewn, blue-collar, working-class nature of the neighborhood. It's not DPH, despite the inaccurate clamoring of some other reviewers, it's Old North Sac, and it's generally safe, even at dark of night. Bears, leather, workingmen, and those who admire them. Wannabe blue collar, twinks who are slumming, looking for a rough trade fantasy without the risk. Drinks can be Mercantile-strong, but the bartenders do actually know how to craft a good cocktail, too, so don't be afraid to tell them you want one. Immediately a bartenter--not even OUR bartender--stopped to say hello and chant, could tell we were not from the area and gave us a free shot! The place was very laid back and friendly. This bar is still so poorly run yet offers so much potential. Although it was busier tonight for the SF Bare Chest Calendar event, many weekends there are at the absolute most 50 people going in and out. Sunday BBQ beer bust in the afternoons where any bar in SF is packed, this bar has about 20 guys max. Tonight, they had a few more people as it was the annual SF Bare Chest Calendar event. Lively, fun people and everyone seemed jovial but it was disappointing again. Outside: very large deck with fire pit. It's a cold night and people are bound to be outside. So there's a large roaring fire in the pit? NOPE. Seldom is. When I've complained about the lack of a fire (which absolutely nobody from the bar seems to care about or attend to, I've been told there's no wood. So, here's a great idea, BUY some damn wood!! Plan or teh weekends. Teh same thing happened last NY Eve. Lot so of people for a change. It's freezing outside. I got out to get some area and see who's out there. No fire. No wood. No warmth. Such a no-brainer and they just don't seem to care. Even a few mounted or free-standing​ propane heaters would make a world of difference​​e--again a standard at any bar that has outdoor patrons. And then tonight, most are inside. It's bare chest night and who is bare chested? Just teh calendar guys. Why? Because some idiot at the bar propped the door open (maybe they were hot working). If you see guys that won't even take off their coat, they're likely to not take off their shirts either. They play porn and maybe try to stir up a little friskiness, but nope. Colder than hell inside. These people don't seem to have any common sense. The owner seems to not want to invest one cent into the place. The outdoor deck (not just a wooden floor and overhanging roof, could have real seating and a sense of seclusion. Plus when it's summer out I've seen them put on misters (very rudimentary ones that require plugging in a hose and then many of the spouts are clogged or something, so it's not adequate. The decor inside is dated and likely been exactly the same for 20 years. More wasted space. It's an easy equation: If you don't provide a quality place you're not going to draw business. The mantra seems to be that if you just give them all alcohol​ that's all they need. Plus, they play the most strange videos. Old porn playing (who needs to watch old porn at a bar??), or videos of gay pride celebrations from years ago. The TVs are fairly prominent and thus distracting when you don't want to be. Surely there's someone in Sacramento that wants to invest in a "real" bear/leather bar for mature men. There's several in SF. I actually live right around the corner and had no idea what this place was. There's no sign, no posters, nothing, accept that little red open sign. So on my way home everyday I use Boxwood as a quicker way to get to Del Paso, and I always noticed that that place is packed out, any time day or night. One day I stopped in and the door guy asks me for my id (like my bald head doesn't just scream "of age!") Now there are two doors and I'm in between them talking to this fellow, he checks my id then asks me if I know what kind of place this is... I'm like, "No that's why I'm here because this is obviously the place to be..." He says "This is a gay bar...." Now as he says this, he steps to the side and I can actually see inside the club, my eyes were immediately drawn to the huge flat screens playing soft porn. Men of all different sorts were chillin and doing their bar thing. So the door guy sees my reaction, guesses I'm straight and opens the first door again like I wouldn't come in after hearing that. So naturally I go in, and not only do I order a Miller Highlife, I shoot a game of pool. Because you don't try to pigeon hole me into being a certain way. I had went here with friends that wanted to go. The leather scene really isn't my scene but I thought "Hey let's try it out." Upon entering it was rather odd to see all that but I understand that's what happens there. Friendly doorman, if I came back that's why. Did a quick walk through before ordering a drink. There was a guy on display all bonded up and someone was biting him. So the BDSM scene is here and it is a more mature crowd than most bars and clubs. I felt a little awkward, but I decided to make the best of it. Nice bar selection. The infamous Scott was our bartender for this night, he was only wearing a leather apron. Literally. Totally nude, you could see his flat flabby ass. Not attractive. We met the owner, Kenny Yerkes, he seemed nice but he was drunk and rather handsy, but who isn't at a gay bar. Now is should've known right off the bat something was up from the handshake, it was very limp and loose for a business man. Almost like shaking a shy girl's hand. He got us our first round of drinks then darted off. I thought that was polite. When it came time for the second drink, I had notice that they serve beer in small pitchers which they call a bottomless beer and for the flat fee of $12 that seemed like a steal. But we weren't going to stay that long so I got just one. Now this is when the review is about to take a turn for the worst. This bartender Scott will FLAT OUT ignore you if you don't fit the scene or don't know his name. He is very short with you as well. Which could benefit you because you can basically get free drinks. So after that exchange we decided to see the patio. Nothing too special kind of looks like a thrown together park or someone's backyard. The fire pit masks the heavy cigarette smoke smell. They have a sign that say "No drinks beyond this point" but it's not enforced not is there anyone to monitor. So if you want get a drink and then leave with the cup, go out the back. So we chill outside for a bit, this place has many characters. Great for people watching. So we decide to leave and go somewhere else. So as we are walking to the door, the owner is drunkenly rambling over the microphone, but certain words start to catch my ear. I am of mixed race and black happens to be one of them. Now this is behavior I would expect from an employee or a patron, but not the owner. He used the phrases "monkey" and "monkey lover" in reference to one of my friends. Now I know sometimes there's inside jokes so I ask the BLACK doorman if I heard what I think I heard and he confirmed and that it bothers him as well. And if I had an issue with it I should tell him. Last thing I really wanted to do at that time. And then even with consulting others, I learned that is normal behavior for the owner. So before you think this is made up or just to bash, read the other reviews from people that ARE NOT white. Of course they had a good time, it's Aryan Nation in there. But it's 2014, racial slurs shouldn't be used at all anymore. So if you're white, you love this place. Anything else, brace yourself. read more

The Bolt is a great neighborhood gay leather bar. Think Cheers, but gay. They've got the regular at the corner of the drinking beer, the know-it-all annoying everyone, the hardworking (but sometimes rude) staff, and a genuine love for one another. Seriously! For many of us, it's home! It's a leather/bear/Levi/cowboy gay bar. It's painted the obligatory dark grey on the inside with framed posters of half naked guys. Softcore gay porn plays on the TV screens most of the time. And, yes, there is a sling hanging on the stage (it doesn't get much real use). One of the restrooms has an old trough urinal with a mirror (don't get too worried, there is a more private bathroom next to it). This all adds to the dirty, kinky atmosphere of the place. The bar also has daily drink specials, a pool table (with a weekly free play night), and electronic darts. Check the Bolt website to find out when they offer free food or entertainment. Also, note, THERE IS NEVER A COVER AT THE BOLT! Come out on a Sunday afternoon for beer bust (pay once and get all the beer you want for the rest of the day). Enjoy the afternoon in the back yard. I've been patronizing The Bolt for the last 3 years on and off but nowadays, there are only three main reasons I'll go there when in the area: * It's tucked away off the beat and path far from the crowds and traffic of downtown * No fish * It's the only place where a BIG guy might find a chubby chaser The bar itself is nice. Great layout, nice back patio area, good music, but tacky soft porn on the TVs. The bartenders are capable enough and friendly, although it's evident they lavish extraordinary amounts of attention on their "regulars". Speaking of which are VERY cliquish and not altogether welcoming sometimes. Don't get me wrong here, I've chatted with some real sweet guys in this place, but lately I've noticed that for the most part people are not super nice. I am often torn--both as a queer and as a human being--between the extremes of alternativity and conformity, something that this place seems to encompass. It's an old-school gay bar, but separated from the rest of the gay scene. This is bear and daddy central... so if you're a snooty queen or can't handle being hit on by old guys, steer clear. If you like Merc style drinks (strong and cheap) and friendly bartenders, this is your place. Juke box often gets taken over by country, and there are some very interesting seating options... Benches up against the wall, some bleachers over by the pool table and the giant sex swing (which you're NOT allowed to get on)... but out-back is the best part: it's basically the biggest backyard ever, with a FIRE PIT and a cozy porch. I admit that I've had a groping session out in that darkened corner, and I'm pretty sure everyone could tell what was going on...lol But as much as I love this place, I haven't been back since a little incident: this is a bar frequented by mostly "masc" gay dudes, and I am, shall we say, a *little* flamboyant. Can I help it if I have a weakness for bears? I kind of got myself into some trouble and almost got beat up... yeah, nearly gay bashed in the GAY bar. No way! I'M the first person to write a review of the Bolt? WHAT? I read a review written by a self-proclaimedly self-loathing, self-homophobic San Franciscan that was pretty good a few years ago, I wish I could find it so that I could either direct to it or plagarize it. However, he was overly harsh (about everything, but in a way that's funny) in his critique, so I'll try to be more balanced. A very good friend of mine should really write this, as he's more eloquent than I, and hangs out there more than I do. Okay, now the actual review...let's see. The Bolt is a gay leather bar. For a lot of people, that's all they need to know. I've only been there a handful of times with a friend of mine who equally feels more or less comfortable there, but who obviously does not fit in with the "crowd". There's a bondage sling in the corner, which is kind of silly, and god knows if it actually ever gets "used". Every time I've been there, it's pretty tame, but there's a titch of scandal going on. Yes, ladies, you can go there, you will be treated politely, though some obligatory jokes might happen. The Bolt is right in the ass crack of Del Paso Heights. Yes, it's scary, but keep in mind, the Bolt is a pretty rough n tumble crowd, if they like you, they'll have your back, and dispite all the machismo flying around, they might act silly, but they're generally nice guys. Example: A guy offered to buy me a drink, I politely accept, and he asks me what I'm gonna have: Beer. "BEER!? How STRAIGHT." Ha. Obnoxious, Gregarious, sure. Nice guy, though. Straight guys maybe exersize some caution, I've had hands on my that I didn't exactly invite, but it's the kind of groping that leaves you feeling more annoyed than violated. But don't go there if something like that is going to drive you instantly to indignation (it's not even that likely to happen, I don't think it would have happened to me at all if it hadn't already been openly established that I was gay). A simple "hey, knock it off, I'm straight" should get you in the clear, though there might be some catty responses. I'd say the Bolt doesn't try to be anything that it's not, but it sorta does. It's not quite as earthy and un-pretentious as it wants to be. That said, I've never had a horrible time there, even though my tenure there has been more just stopping in with friends who I like hanging out with, and who are more into it than I am. I could tolerate it, let's say, and take what fun I could from it that appeals to me. Since it doesn't pretend to be much more than a meat market, that fun usually consists of ogling, even though not a lot of the guys there are my type, but it wouldn't be three stars worth on just ogling, it's also that even if you're talking to somebody who you have virtually nothing in common with, they'll be pretty nice to you, even if kind of catty and snotty. You can totally just go in and slug down a few beers and shoot the breeze there, though if that's seriously all you want, there might be other places better suited for it, depending on your tastes. So you've learned almost nothing. Somebody who's more into this "scene" should review the place. read more

Similar to the Brave Bull in Modesto, this is another one of those places that look rough on the outside but is cool on the inside. Kinda roadhouse-ish on the inside but the people are friendly and bartenders are cute. I went when it was Bear Night and honey let me tell you something about those bears...even if you have three heads they'll still think you're hot so it's a bit of an ego booster. It was at this bar that I de-virginized my liver again after many years and it kinda made me a little off but I managed thanks to my friends who took good care of me. They have a cozy bar area and a very large back patio complete with a deck with seating, fire pit, grass and bushes for those into some extra-curricular activities if you know what I mean. I would like to go back especially if I need an ego boost! read more

I give this place a 0 if I could. The manager reached out to me and told me he was going to investigate the horrible situation I was in. See experience below. He did, and while he offered some solutions to help rectify the situation and help prevent further situations such as ours to occur again, I didn't appreciate being told that the man who harassed my friends and I "was moving around my friend, and then made a small attempt to squeeze into the serving well spot which was stopped." How Invalidating. The only way it was stopped was by us leaving. No one working there intervened to help us. Blame those who are victimized. Or maybe, its blame the woman who has been victimized. I find it interesting that my male friends also posted their reviews and we all shared the same experience. Yet, the manager didn't reach out to them and minimize nor invalidate their experience. This bar is off the beaten path and definitely far away from the twink scene/dance bars downtown Sacramento. Make the drive out to Del Paso and find this place, as this is Sacramento's only leather/levi bar (and it's a pretty good one). This is a full bar and they serve peanuts -- just throw the shells on the ground. There's also some happy, sexy bartenders and it gets pretty busy on the weekends. Thursdays and Sundays are pretty decent as well. There is an enormous, partially covered back "yard", let's call it, with a big fire pit. I've been in the community off and on for a very long time. I am 66 years old. I even used to own and operate a leather style bar in Fresno. For the most part it's a great bar, accept one thing. They cheat at pool on the sign up board. If they don't like you your just sits there and you get passed over I assume because they wanted to play someone else. I also assume that this has been going on for a long time as no one even batted an eye, and I know I wasn't the only one watching the sign up board. I got passed over twice and I was standing right there at the pool table watching each game. Now my question is this, If we're the people we are supposed to be with all the oppression that we have faced over the last 50 , how is it that we do the same things that we fought against for so long, that we end up learning nothing about who we are and what we stand for. So we end up no better than the people who used to berate us and tell us that we don't count, that we don't matter. Nothing has changed, we're just like them and learned nothing, accept that we are just as bad as them, I don't even see when it's happening. I used to think that in my life time I saw progress and hope about our community. I used to think I cared, and if I did care was I the only one ? Sure does feel that way. This is addressed to Brutal T. I am the doorman @ the Bolt. I found your Yelp offensive & inaccurate & ignorant. I clearly recall the conversation we had. You stated that you were offended by a remark that the owner made. I told you that the remark was not a racial slur. I then said that if you felt offended, on behalf of the bar I extend an apology. I then said that if you wanted , you should tell the owner how you felt & that after talking with him you might have a clearer prospective. I never stated that I was bothered by what the owner said. I don't appreciate being misquoted by you! There are plenty of races, genders, & people of various sexual orientation facing REAL prejudices.
