Although pretty private & secluded it still managed to keep a cooling breeze through the covered patio. The Food menu is simple but for a light lunch it's just right. The Staff were extrememely attentive without being in-your-face. It also worth remembering that it closes a 5pm each day. Maybe closing so early & only open 5 days a week indicates the owners like to be around? If you want a relaxed light lunch, or a high-tea this may just be what you are looking for.

Tucked a little out of the way, in a more residential area of Stonehaven is The Villa. And it feels just like that; like somebody has turned their house in to a coffee shop. You'll be welcomed through the hallway and taken to a free table in one of the several rooms of the 'house.' - I don't think I've ever been to a café like this before, and I really enjoyed the whole experience. The decor was minimal with a few quirky signs and fairy lights to set the mood. I really liked theses little additions, which created a lovely homely atmosphere. The baking? It's all homemade. I can only speak for the carrot cake but it was heavenly; moist and flavoursome and light with a scrumptious cream cheese frosting. The latte was lovely too. The cherry on the cake of good coffee and cake is always good service, and The Villa didn't disappoint in this respect. We felt attended to and staff were super friendly and welcoming. A home away from home with cracking good coffee and cake!

My Scottish friend Yvonne suggested we visit Dean's of Huntly, which she thought had a much better product. Really? Let's go! Dean's is located in the town of Huntly. It's not an actual factory tour, but you can observe them make and package their shortbread. There's a gift store, which sells their imperfect shortbread, and they even have a café for a quick bite (before 2:00) or for a cup of tea. We arrived just in time for a light lunch, which Steve, Stephen and I had the fish n chips, while Yvonne had the Macaroni and Cheese, which look oh so gooey and delicious. For a touristy café, the food was very good, and best of all, affordable! After lunch we went upstairs to observe the packaging of the shortbread, and then went to the giftstore to buy shortbread to take home. They had the discards / imperfect ones on sale, for as low as one pound, versus the retail price of 4 pounds in the market. They also had deals such as their full size tins, normally 10 pounds retail, was on sale for 2 at 10 pounds. We left with 10 tins of shortbread!

The side of peas are always a nice touch to the dish as well. Overall it was a bit greasy, but what do you expect from deep fried food? We ordered water as our drink and it is self serve. Apparently this place makes good short bread. I didn't try any but they advertise that it's hand made and famous. My co-worker ordered a bag of it to go for just a pence but we ended up losing it.

We then had a very long wait for a sandwich and a jacket potato, a coffee and a tea. At over £13 we thought it was overpriced, although I have to say it was nicely presented. The two young women who were working there that day were both offhand and could do with some lessons in how to make customers feel welcome.
