What an honor it is for my first U.K restaurant Yelp review to be about fish and chips! LOCATION: The location of the restaurant is about a block or two off from the beaten path of Union St. If coming from Aberdeen airport taking the 727 bus, this gives you a great opportunity to get off near the intersection of Market St. and get a mini walking tour of all the shoping centers, restaurants, and pubs/bars Union St. has to offer.. It's about a 15 minute walk. Just continue west on Union St., take a left on Holbum St., then a right on Great Western Rd. You'll see it immediately. "No 1. in Great Britain for Fish and Chips". Really? Out of all places in the U.K they picked Aberdeen? Thats surprising to me. I've been to gas stations in Texas stating "Best Koloache" and I've been fooled before. How exactly do restaurants earn their right to use the powerful word "Best" in front of their store? When I walked inside I noticed a billboard of articles and top awards won by this restaurant which may qualify such a title, but I had to judge the food for myself. I ordered the fish and chips, of course. Haddock fish and chips (French Fries as Americans call it) to be more precise. It came with a side of plain peas, but other options were available such as kole slaw. The food came out in less than 5 minutes and was hot and ready. Presentation wise, it looked great. The outside looked crispy but not too hard in texture. The sizes of the chips were huge in comparison to Mc.Donalds or even any other chips/fries in the US. The peas, well, the peas were just a nice touch of green on the plate. First bite I was very impressed. Second bite I wasn't let down either. Maybe it was the jet lag and empty stomach which made each bite amazing, but what did it matter to me. Halfway through the fish though, I learned that not all bites were the same unfortunatey. A small portion of the batter was still a bit doughy/soggy on one side, but that didn't really take anything away from the enjoyment of the meal. I just didn't expect the best fish and chips to have that, but none-the-less it was still very delicious! With all this said, theres almost no doubt it's one of the best fish and chips I've ever had... but to be fair, it's the only fish and chips I had in the U.K so far. Oh dear. Nostalgia maybe aint what it used to be, but this was still a big dizzy. The Ashvale takeaway proudly boasts a 30-year track record...and I was there at the start. And I've been back many a time. So a white pudding supper seemed an ideal way to fill a hole last night. Sadly not. It took 15 minutes and, while the north-east delicacy that is the pudding was ok, not great but ok, the chips weren't. A bit underdone, lacking taste, and destined for the bin. Excellently sized portions. My rock Turbot in batter was well cooked and the mushy peas were practically perfect. I've had better chips but I still cleared the plate (adding the High Tea option would though I think have seen me explode). Add to that a generous serving of tea (in one of those traditional metal teapots that are designed not to pour properly) and it all made for a very satisfying meal at a good price. I was there around half four on a Friday afternoon but only had the place to myself for about ten minutes and as I left more cars were pulling up (to the extent that they seem to employ a car park minder) so I'd suggest that booking ahead for later in the evening is wise. read more

The fish and chips are awesome. Crispy batter and good fish. The chips are average but definitely don't detract either. The last time I went, the place ran out of eggs, which was a bit disappointing. After a couple pints, I wasn't complaining. Overall, great location and great food. I'd come back and show people this place. read more

Our family ordered 5 standard haddock suppers and it took over an HOUR AND A HALF. Usually this particular fish and chip shop does Aberdeen proud but this time we were incredibly disappointed especially since the website had promised fresh fish delivered in less than an hour. If i were to run a fish and chip business then i would make sure any customers ade to wait longer then average would get free service. We had to get a family member to go collect it even after we paid for a delivery. EVENTUALLY when we got it, it was soggy AND even after asking for salt and vinegar we never got it. This is a real let down for us and will certainly tell others about our misfortune. Will definitely think twice when coming back to the ashvale :( read more

Went in here and expected to get the best possible as they claim on their window sticker. As mentioned a large portion size but not great quality. It was a busy time to be there though so could give them benefit of the doubt. I guess that just happens sometimes in restaurants. For supposedly being the best fish and chips in Aberdeen, I was disappointed. Yes, their portions are large, but I still would not go back. Our fish wasn't crispy...in fact it was just soggy...and definitely wasn't prepared fresh for me. I have to say, I won't be going back when Hass's is just around the corner and much better. read more

Really family friendly fish and chip restaurant. They do both take away and sit in meals. Not only do they serve a wonderful range of battered fish, but it is also possible to get steaks, salad, chicken and also a good range of vegetarian meals, such a veggie burgers and vegetable lasagne. Their prices are very reasonable. Main courses tend to be around £6 - 7 for fish and chips and other mains, and around £12 if you opt for a steak choice. They also do a lunch menu and early bird menu which has special offers on. This is usually a set special offer price for a starter and main course, or main course and pudding (the sticky toffee pudding is lovely!) Wow! If you like portion sizes massive, the ashvale restaurant is for you. Can you eat a whale supper? This is a 1lb, yes ONE POUND haddock fillet. So its over 3 times the size of a normal fish. Which incidentally I can't even manage to eat. Apparently you get a certificate if you can eat a whale supper! They have a wide selection of fish on the menu. The service in here is excellent. Food prepared and served extremely fast. I love the haggis ball starter with cranberry sauce. The fish, chips and mushy peas are very good. I ordered sides of onion rings and battered mushrooms, portion sizes are very generous so plenty if you want to share.
