As I was exploring the street, looking for the next ideal place to enjoy lunch I came across this Bistro. Luckily I avoided the masses of school children, who also appeared to stroll the roads for their preferred lunch. Looking at the menu displayed in one of their large front windows, I was satisfied to enter and took a seat. The waitress was quick to hand me their lunch menu. They offered croissants with different fillings, soup, egg variations, salads......nothing really that called out to me. However, the Hot Chocolate with marshmellows and cream sounded delightful enough. I also ordered a slice of marble cake. For both items I paid £5.40. Personally I thought this to be a bit overpriced as the Hot Chocolate was served in a regular cup and the cake a bit dry. Having said this, I loved the milky Hot Chocolate and it would be fab to see it served in a mug. I also noticed that in the evening the place might convert into a bar and saw all the various cocktails on their drink list: Mojito, long island tea....the typical cocktail list! Besides individual glasses they also offer cocktail jugs from £16 upwards. I think that's definitely worth trying out! The staff is really friendly. Not sure if they have toilets. I could not see a sign. The place is ideal for locals and tourists meeting up with friends or just a wee rest from a stressful day.

Portobello has a number of good little places, and this is one to add to that list, but it's perhaps better just to pop in for a coffee or a drink. Overall, we said: "I thought that The Skylark had real potential, particularly as a relaxing Sunday afternoon spot, as the place has a smart and understated charm. However, the food needs marked improvement. It was just all too meek for its own good. It was rather reminiscent of Cafe Milk, in that regard. With a significant dose of chutzpah, they could develop a really attractive offering. For now, there are other places in this neighbourhood that make a better case for meriting a visit."

From the outside I could see well stocked shelves with various wines from around the world, but l could also see a selection of bottled beers nicely on display and that's what originally bought me in. These guys stock a wide variety of beers a bit like hippo beers but not as big, there must have been at least 6 or more from innis & gunn to choose from. Some items may be pricy but you are supporting an independent and not a chain. Staff are knowledgable & helpful, will advise if you are unsure what to buy.

This has led me to visit a number of wine shops during my time in Edinburgh. And so when I came over the Fine Wine Company shop on Portobello High Street, I had to give it a go. From the outside, through the large panels of glass, you can tell the shop is very well stocked. When I entered the shop has a modern, laid back fell, where you can easily select a few bottles. As I wondered round the store I noticed that a lot of the wines that were on display were not your usual main stream, supermarket wines but were actual from smaller producers (something which they strive to do). The wines are more expensive here than your local supermarket, but this shop does do good deals on multiple buys, something which is always a positive. The staff also seemed very knowledgeable and were very eager to help. A great place to buy a few bottles.

My review update…read more In the quieter months this place was ok. Come the summer months and this place is run wild with dogs and their mess and that's just the inside! The bar due to its position attracts unsavoury characters out of the woodwork where fights are common here fuelled by drink and bar glasses being thrown. From being a welcoming bar in the quieter months has turned to the opposite, I've witnessed the peroxide blonde woman in her late 50's give verbal abuse to customers for not paying to use the toilet facilities and l think she was the manager! . The toilets here need industrial strength bleach as l do not think they have been cleaned in some time and for the bar there is dog's mess on the floor that staff don't even bother cleaning up, the general odour of the bar is of mild rotting sea weed, l thought it was the smell of the sea but soon realized it was the smell of dog excrement. All you can hear over the music it the swearing by bar staff and the dogs barking. The food here is no more than a microwaved scotch pie and beans. If you are ever in the are this is the place to avoid.
