Well I did the norm and walked by to go to the beach house (great spot!) it was full.. no tables.. and the kids needed to get out of the cold so I thought "what the hey, Ill poke my nose in the chippy and warm up" . Its as run down inside as it is out. I has an authentic feel to it.. one that says "get out". But the guy was nice so I thought Id give it a try .. knowing Id regret it.. but it was cold outside and the beach house was full.. this place was empty. The Kids soon found the toys in the corner.. "that's thoughtful", I thought. The menus came out and there were 4 choices of fresh fish! That was a surprise. The friendly waitress explained the dishes.. fish and chips!! Whats to explain.. well lots it turns out. I made my choice and in good time my order came.. only the best fish and chips in Edinburgh!! As I ate ..astonished with every mouthfull, the owner came to my table to check how the food was!! Is this a fish and chips shop or a fancy restaurant? He gave me a welcome and explained he was the new owner and had big plans for the place once some money/customers come in. I finished the meal and he came over to see if I wanted more. I got the impression he was offering more for free but I was stuffed. I just got a coffee. The coffee was great, not as nice as the beach house but it was half the price. Because I will never - EVER - find a fish supper superior, or perhaps even equal, to the one I had this weekend from the Golden Bite. I travelled to Portobello with Moray L on the express mission of trying the legendary Bite Of Gold after reading Justin G's review, and we were the first ones in when the doors opened at 16:45. The man who greeted us over the counter could not have been happier if he had been a dog in a field full of squirrels. It doesn't seem an exaggeration to say that I suspect frying fish has been his lifelong passion. Because we were so early, we got the first haddock to go into the fryer - clean, white haddock of gobsmacking, Jonah-swallowing proportions which the chap wobbled at us playfully before setting about the battering and frying. At this point - minutes after the doors opened - the shop filled. I mean it properly filled. I know not how many of these were pilgrims like us, and how many were locals, but it's clear that the reputation of The Golden Bite's fish suppers is widely renowned. I was reaching five stars simply from the cleanliness, the rich frying smell, and the chap's jollity before I'd even put anything in my mouth, and when a small girl entered and he pulled down a teddy bear to wave at her, I was smitten with the place entirely. But the food. The food. The proof of the poisson is in the eating. Oh. My. Wrapped lovingly in paper and carried down reverently to the seafront for consumption, these piscine Midas fillets were battered to crispy perfection, but still with the softer underside that makes a fish supper truly sensational. The chips - proper chip shop chips - were glorious and plentiful, but not so numerous as to prevent one from finishing the lustrous, luscious fishywishy that so enchanted both me and Moray. The food is second to none! End of. So allow me to throw Portobello's contender for the Best Local Chinese Takeaway Award (of course I made that up!) into the ring. Not satisfied simply to specialise in Chinese cuisine, Keanes House goes two further and also dabbles in Thai and Malaysian to dazzling standards. Their Pad Thai and Malaysian Curry have to be experienced to be believed; their Peanut Satay Chicken skewers are sweet and moist; their spare ribs are meaty; their prawn crackers are flavourful and delivered in generous portions. Since moving to the Portobello area, and subsequently discovering this golden egg of a takeaway, I make a point of experiencing Keanes House at least once a month. Prices are completely reasonable considering a) the portions, and b) the quality, and the service is efficient and satisfactory. Hey, I'm not looking for small talk and forced courtesies; I'm looking for a right good feed. One thing I will say is the chef takes his time with the food. And that's a positive. I don't mean they take an age to deliver (they don't as a matter of fact); I just mean expect to wait a good 10 minutes, if you're picking it up, while the cook works his magic in the kitchen, taking time and deliberation to offer up some tasty, tasty goods. It's a family run business that has been in the same family's hands since the 1970's. They have one of the most extensive menus of any Chinese take away that I've used. Their Cantonese duck is fab and their garlic chicken is just yummy. I always get free juice and at Christmas a calendar or biscuits. They do deliver but I prefer to go in and collect my dinner and have a wee chat with one of the Lee family.

In a nutshell, my lad and I had purchased a deal voucher for this place (yes, the alarm bells are already ringing) for a ridiculously good price. Three courses and a glass of wine for £4.50 each. Bargain! We tried to book a table in advance of our journey out to Portobello, but despite its advertised opening times, the restaurant did not pick up the phone. Undeterred by this slight setback, we made a de-tour to the location on our visit in Porty and managed to grab someone from the kitchen. After a five minute conversation where both parties were confused, we agreed to come back at 5pm. Upon returning to the place around 5.3pm we were initially refused entry to eat off the deal voucher. The woman claimed that the place was fully booked on a Saturday and there was no way we could eat, and could we come back tomorrow? We explained that we'd made a journey across town epecially to come there and as the restaurant was currently totally empty, we asked if we could come back and eat at 6pm. After much humming and hawing and complaining that on Saturdays they were SO busy and we should have booked, the woman said we could eat before the restaurant opened "officially" at 6pm. We sat down (in the dark - she didn't turn on the lights for 5 minutes or so) and ordered food. We would have booked if the sodding place had picked up the phone according to their opening hours! However, the woman was not prepared to take this into account. Anyway. For the entire time we were there (appoximately an hour) not ONE table was taken up by other paying customers. The restaurant was like a ghost town and was completely devoid of customers. I suspect everyone else in Portobello knows how crap it is, and the place survives by preying on suckers like me, ha. The food was passable, but as the service was so shockingly bad I'd never recommend this place to my worst enemy. It wasn't even worth £4.50 per person for three courses. What an utter disgrace. I can't really articulate how badly we were treated by the staff at this establishment. It was just awful. The idea of the deal vouchers is to get repeat business and encourage word of mouth reviews. Everyone's been hearing about the shoddy customer service we received and now the internet knows too! So much for encouraging business. Yikes. There's a lot more I haven't included in this review. Suffice to say we were made to feel like complete burdens for the restaurant staff. Steer clear at all costs (even if it's only £4.50!).
