Signed up for knitting lessons. When I got to my first lesson the instructor asked if anyone was left handed and I said I was and the instructor told me that I had to learn right handed which was not working for me. If I had known this was going to be the case I would have never signed up. When I went back to return my unused yarn and complained they provided me with another name to call - I have already out $148 - no thank you very disappointed. read more

I know absolutely nothing about yarn or knitting. However, I needed to pick up a gift for a friend who is *very* much into it so I dropped by The Blue Purl while visiting Madison. I am very happy I did! The Blue Purl is a beautiful shop. It looks like you're hanging out in someone's beautiful den (who just happens to LOVE knitting with TONS of yarn on shelves). Here's the brilliant part: The Blue Purl has several preset kits you can buy as gifts. Each one includes all the yarn you will need with a card or paper inside with color photos showing you what the end product will look like. This was *perfect*! I wound up finding a set and it made for a super easy purchase. One more fun thing: the shop owners will also wind the yarn for you at no additional cost. This is probably old hat for knitters but for me this was a very cool thing to witness so I had some fun too! I highly recommend The Blue Purl if you need gifts for a knitter or need supplies for yourself. read more

When I first came to the Blue Purl - I never knitted before. I did a secret Santa exchange and was getting a gift for a friend. This shop is beyond welcoming and conscious of your budget. The owners - Patty and Wendy are so kind and helpful, and everyone working there is really nice and knowledgeable. First time I went in there I had no idea what I was looking for, and came in and was basically like help! And they helped me pick out the gift you see below in the second picture. Now I've started knitting a lot more and they're just really the best. I come in during normal times to bounce off ideas for projects, get help with little mistakes, and just get help with what colors to pick because I'm terrible at it. During corona virus I emailed about getting more yarn, and Wendy FaceTimed me while in the store and helped show what yarn they had and helped me keep what I got as budget friendly. Normally (non corona virus times) they have a table where you can come in and hang out and knit, and really awesome classes. the blue purl has such a good environment and community and I would definitely recommend checking it out. I came in this morning since I was in the area and wanted to get a small gift as a thank you to a friend, whom is also a knitter. Wendy welcomed me within seconds of me walking in, and the atmosphere was incredibly welcoming and warm. Liz, another worker there, was also incredibly friendly and helpful. I was directed to sale bins, patterns, and other areas of expertise, and learned that they hold classes (knit-alongs!) as well as engage their community through a weekly newsletter. Local knitters and creators teach classes here, their patterns are highlighted to support local craftsman, and I cant recommend supporting the Blue Pearl enough - this is the epitome of community! While I wasn't intending to get anything for myself, I still walked away with everything (and more) that I came in for... and a few new friends. I'll be back! read more

This yarn shop was so pleasant! The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming! The shop Carrie's many big brands, but does also carry some local and regionally died yarns! I live in Westfield. While there are several yarn stores that are closer, I think this is the best store around! Definitely worth a drive. Friendly, helpful staff, and great selection of yarns..lots of high end, beautiful projects, but everything is not a small fortune. I'm a believer in patronizing stores that treat you well ..for me, this is it! read more

The owner, Maura, is extremely nice as are any of the other workers I've dealt with. I've sat and knit a few times and always felt welcome in the shop even though I'm not a "regular". read more

The Blue Purl is a lovely suburban yarn shop in Madison, NJ. It's not the best yarn store I've ever been to, but it's definitely the best one in New Jersey (and I've been to ALL the yarn stores in NJ). They have a wide selection of yarns, ranging from the affordable to the luxury, and the staff is super friendly and helpful. Plus, they have a lady who does blocking for a very reasonable price--totally worth it so as to avoid the trouble of doing it yourself! I do wish they had a slightly larger selection of pattern books, but they do have a solid selection of individual patterns. read more

Wonderful and welcoming yarn store. My go-to shop recently closed, and I'd been in the Blue Purl a few times before for odds and ends. But I had some issues with the Henley neckline of a sweater I was knitting and Maura sat me right down and helped me through it. She deftly helped me and helped customers at the same time, while checking in with me to see how I was doing. I've never walked in without being asked if I need help or if I'm looking for something in particular - also a big plus. Yarn selection isn't as wide as I would like, but it's still pretty fantastic. read more

This yarn store is in the middle of a very cute downtown area. The store has some nice yarns at decent prices, though nothing really out of the ordinary. Well stocked with the basics, and a nice button selection and tool selection. The two taller sales staff who were there today were helpful and lovely; the shorter woman with the straight dark hair was snarky and sarcastic. I doubt I will be back--there are plenty of places to buy nice yarn without the attitude. read more

I started knitting a blanket awhile back after taking beginner classes at my local knitting store. One day, I made a mistake and wasn't sure how to fix it, and unfortunately the store by me had closed down. I called a couple of other knitting stores nearby, asking if they ever offer assistance with projects. I found that the people working in these stores did not appear very interested in helping me and were offering an hourly rate that would not be prorated even if the fixes were to take less than an hour. That's when I decided to call The Blue Purl, which was considerably farther away from my home but had wonderful reviews and seemed worth a try. I spoke with Wendy over the phone, and she was so pleasant. She offered to help me with my project at no cost, which I greatly appreciated since I had not purchased the yarn at her store. I came to The Blue Purl later that day, and another lady graciously assisted me with fixing my project (and even gave me a new pair of circular needles when mine had unfortunately broken). She and the owners were so kind. The warm, friendly atmosphere was wonderful and unlike some other knitting stores I have been to in the past. Needless to say, I will definitely be coming here again when it is time for me to figure out what my next knitting project should be. :) read more

I visited Blue Purl yarn shop today for the first time. I had a photo with me of a scarf my friend had knitted and a little note with the four lines of directions. They helped me find the yarn even though I did not know the name. They also helped me find the various colors needed for a very intricate sampler scarf they had on display. I was invited to come visit to sit and knit any time. Prices were competitive but they had a huge selection of yarns that were on sale. That's the yarn I chose for the sampler scarce which has sections done in different colors and stitches. Can't wait to start all of them. I just wish I had taken pictures of the intricate scarf as the colors I picked look like the one in the store and not like the one in the pattern I purchased. read more

I have been knitting and crocheting for more than 20 years, and yet usually feel intimidated in yarn stores, because the personnel often act as though they are superior to we mere mortals who do not work in yarn shops. This place is one of two exceptions to that impression, and the other one is in California. Everyone here seems not only helpful but eager to share a love for the craft, and I feel comfortable and welcome here. Their yarns are beautiful, and fairly priced. They often provide free patterns, and have incredible and lovely samples to inspire projects throughout the store. I feel this store is a real treat, and hope many will help keep them in business for years to come--while i was in today, a customer was in to buy yarn for a child who was learning to crochet.
