The beginner adult class is great to get comfortable with the machine, winding a bobbin, and learning simple stitches all while creating your first product (a small drawstring pouch!). Everyone who joined the class was also so sweet and supportive. I'm sure it varies class to class, but it definitely felt like a great community. Urban Sewciety also has a small shop on the first level with beautifully curated fabrics and different projects that you can also take home to try. They also run different events (and sales) from time to time, so be on the lookout!

They were very helpful in trying to help me find the right elastic cord, but unfortunately they didn't have exactly what I was looking for. They have lots of spool trims like elastic, ribbon, lace, beaded, and other novelty trims. They've got a friendly store cat that is sociable and talkative. I've heard there are 2 cats but I only saw 1. The store was pretty quiet when I went, so the cat followed me around a lot. So if you go when they're not busy, you might have a friend accompanying you around the store asking for attention! :)

Pricing is mostly as expected, you will pay a few dollars extra per yard as opposed to some of the discount fabric stores. Personally, spending the few extra bucks at B&J is always worth the trade-off because of the smooth and well-designed experience in the store. They stock high-quality materials and I have never been disappointed in something I've purchased. This store goes the extra mile and will provide you with up to (I believe) 15 free samples per visit. Their inventory is extremely well-managed and they put a bar code/ID sticker on each fabric sample they give you. This way, the process is extremely fast when going back to the store to make purchases. The employees can simply scan the sticker from any of the samples and cut you a piece to length. The whole process seldom takes more than 5 minutes once you have decided what you want. This beats the discount stores 10/10 times in my book, because I save so much time that it warrants the slightly higher price. I have not written any reviews for fabric stores because, frankly, my experience has been nearly identical at all of them EXCEPT for B&J. Along with my fabric purchases, I was looking for bag/backpack hardware today which they do not really carry. One of the employees (did not get her name) was kind enough to hand me a printed list of other stores and recommend a couple that would have what I was looking for. She was absolutely spot on, and I got everything else I needed from the other store. I really appreciated the tip, I have not had a comparable experience or been given this level of attention/help at any other fabric shop in NYC.

I start explaining what I want and he asks me if I am Mikey. I told him no, my name is not Mike, he says yes I am I am just talking with a fake accent. I was a little shocked, again I explain what I want and again he calls me Mikey. Again I explained to him, I am calling from a cell and I am sure he can see my name on the caller ID, he is mistaking me for someone. So he finally says that I am calling on behalf of Mikey. He finally tells me to hold, some lady picks up the phone. I explain to her the stitch work I am looking for, she says she doesn't do it and hangs up. I am not even sure where to begin, i am not sure how they stay in business.

One of the bins of Moda Dea was not tagged and he gave me each cone at a fantastic price. He runs sales on top of discounts which makes this a dangerous place for any yarnivore. If you are a student, you get an additional discount. So happy I had my F.I.T. id on me. I left with two black garbage bags topped so full, one of the helpful sales gents had to help me load my car. Don't be put off by the industrial surroundings of the shop. It's a factory store open only occasionally to the public. Enjoy Paterson as you drive through it. The Great Falls brought industry here and by the late 1800's, the power of the waterfalls resulted in almost half of America's silk being produced in Paterson, hence the town's moniker of "Silk City." Perfect name choice for this business as you certainly feel like you are in a small city of silk when inside the vast caverns filled with cones and cones of yarn. Arrive early when doors open as the best items get scooped up quickly. The feeling of guilt will pass as you realize all the guys and gals present in the warehouse are in the same shopping frenzy as you. Their remorselessness is contagious. Be sure to have prebudgeted for the amount you are planning to spend or you will eating ramen noodles for three months trying to cover your rent. You can set out all the lovely cones of your yarn to stroke to distract you from any feelings of hunger.
