After years of seeing what Yelp says about businesses before now, I have never written a review. I…read moream now compelled to take my time for my first review on La Cicla Bike Shop in Sherman Oaks. It is one of the local bike shops that is assigned as a current dealer for XDS X-Lab bikes. When I went in, I was greeted by Bam and Lucy. Despite them not having my desired bike, they said they would inquire with the XDS manufacturer on when the bike inventory would be restocked. Lucy and Bam were helpful, patient, and friendly. Lucy said she would get back to me with availability details. That was Sunday. Monday, she called to tell me the manufacturer gave her a specific date. Not only was Lucy able to source the bike that was sold out online at the time (and still is on the XDS website), but my bike arrived and was assembled on the exact day she said it would be. When I picked up the bike, Lucy and Jamie were thorough with explaining to me the components and accessories of the bike and offered helpful tidbits. Lucy even helped me squeeze the bike into my hatchback. She's right, I need a bike rack. Although I have not been a customer of La Cicla long enough to need bike maintenance, if it's anything like the customer service they've already provided, then I'd be more than happy to give them my business. I would 100% recommend Cicla for those wanting an XDS bike, or any other bikes they carry.

On September 9, 2026, I experienced a popped rear tire on my e-bike near the Beverly Grove area. I…read morecalled the Beverly Hills store ahead of time to confirm they had a 20x4 inner tube in stock, explicitly mentioning that I was riding a heavy e-bike. The staff confirmed they had the part, so I walked my heavy, disabled e-bike a mile to the shop in 98-degree heat, arriving on the verge of heat exhaustion. Upon arrival, the technician barely looked at me or the bike. He nonchalantly stated he had other customers and asked me to leave the bike overnight, which I agreed to do. Three hours later, I received a phone call from the technician stating he had "bad news." He claimed that due to my bike's suspension setup, he lacked the "specialized tools" required to remove the rear wheel without damaging it. As an experienced rider, I knew this was completely false. The rear wheel drops off cleanly using standard hand tools without ever touching the suspension. When I returned to the shop to retrieve my bike, my suspicions were confirmed by the unprofessional attitude of the staff: * The employee at the door mocked my situation, condescendingly telling me, "Well, have fun with that," when I pointed out the fix was simple. * The cashier completely shrugged me off, stating he "didn't know" why the tech refused the work, showing absolute indifference to the fact that they were turning away business. Because of their refusal to perform a basic tire change, I was forced to drag my heavy e-bike another 2 miles to the train station in 90-degree weather. When I finally got the bike home, I successfully removed the rear wheel and replaced the tube myself in less than 30 minutes using a standard wrench and an Allen key. The technician lied about needing specialized equipment. The staff's dismissive, mocking, and unhelpful behavior leaves me to believe that I was either turned away out of sheer laziness or straight-up discrimination. No customer should be humiliated, lied to, and left stranded in a dangerous heatwave by representatives of the Trek brand.

When that shop, lost their lease and had to close I was in a panic as I am great with financial spreadsheets but a real Clutz with anything mechanical so I called the single Canyon outlet in the USA at the time which was in Oceanside, CA. Naturally they were hesitant to name a place but with some begging I finally got a guy in their mechanic shop to recommend Stotts on Victory Boulevard in Burbank and have been very happy with them. I do a lot of charity rides including the 545-mile AIDS Life Cycle 10 times along with many local centuries in the area. Over the years I've become comfortable with telling them they type of ride I am getting ready to do and ask them to do whatever they need to get the bike ready; if it's just a small adjustment out of wack they just do it with no charge but it its more, I am always quoted a price and a reason why the work is needed. One time I went in to buy a new set of Continental Grand Prix 5000 tires and was shown why I did not need tires by showing me the tread indicators. I went in to get new brake pads once and was told I just needed a slight adjustment. I now just drop of my bike and tell them to do whatever it needs for xxx bike ride and they always call me back with a quote and a reason why. A tune up is a tune up but if more is required, they always call me to say what they recommend and the reason why. From the owner to all of the staff, I trust these guys and drive out of my way to patronize them. David Woodard

Even though I was more on a browsing expedition with one item set in mind the Big 5 Sporting Good Crew of SC was super friendly, personable and very much supportive of one another as well as all customers in the store. It's a boutique style Big 5 - located on Ventura Place between Laurel Canyon Blvd and Radford Avenue, parallel to Venture Blvd. I don't pop in much as other locations speak to me a little better in terms of what I need or might be looking for. All locations could use a modern update or some tlc - it does feel a bit like a 90s time capsule... I did luck in a portable fan, double AA battery powered and perfect for a humid and/or super sunny day. Batteries are reasonable here as well. Good deals on sporting goods, beach gear, apparel, indoor and outdoor goods. I can't remember the last time I saw a Big 5 that carried firearms but this is one of the locations. Obviously they aren't loaded and it's all about safety first, but it caught me off guard with so many families and kids in the store. They carry a huge variety of everything from tents and canopies to baseball gear and softball equipment. Swimwear, camping things and even have in-store as well as online sales, deals and coupons. Street and private lot parking with access through the alley, making it easy during Sundays with the Farmers Market direct in front along the street. Hours vary through the week, but service and selection is always consistent.
