The staff are all avid cyclists. Tom, Eli, Walter and Ben all do great work and are active in the cycling community. The turnaround time is always super reasonable I rarely have to leave my bike overnight for a repair or maintenance. The selection of parts, accessories and bicycles is very impressive considering the size of the store. They have some very unique and impressive accessories one of my favorites was the Jansport Burrito Roll pencil case used for bike repair kit from several years back. The also offer membership for commuters offering a secure place to store your bike with keycard access 20 hours a day, 7 days a week to use showers, lockers, and towels. Membership also includes access to a basic self-service bike repair area for after-hours maintenance. 24-hour video surveillance and on-site security staff keep the peace. This is ideal since they are located at the Tempe Transit Center which has a light rail stop and bus access. They carry my favorite flat pedals "MSW Thump". Cannot say enough wonderful things about Tom and the rest of the team at Bicycle Cellar. We just moved to Tempe and needed to get a flat tire fixed on my wife's cruiser. Tom explained that the thorns from the plants out here can wreck havoc on bicycle tires. He replaced the tube within minutes and then recommended that we add this solution to the tires to prevent it from happening again. The fix was very affordable, so we brought in all of our bikes and we have had no more issues since. We have also brought in our bikes and Trikkes for maintenance and have been pleased with their detailed explanations, their work and their pricing. So much so that we ended up buying three brand new hybrid bikes based on their recommendations. We appreciated their ability to text and provide almost instantaneous responses, sometime even after hours. Their knowledge and helpfulness are some of the best that we have ever experienced. Went there this morning, caught a flatty on the way to work. Figured it would be busy inside for a Saturday morning, half and hour after open-- nope! I was greeted and assisted in seconds. Told the gentleman my issue, gave him my wheel and tube specs. He responds with, "Got about 5 to 10 minutes?" Oh, so nice! He offers me a product to prevent another issue, I agree to purchase. I'm writing my review as an out-of-towner. I'm at ASU for a three week science teacher class, and contemplated bringing my bike on the airplane (Southwest is very bike friendly). In the end I decided to try to live without my bike. Two days after I got to Tempe I stumbled on the Bicycle Cellar, and discovered I could rent a bike there. They were very helpful, including providing a helmet and lock (and loaning me a three-way allen wrench so I could make adjustments to the fit). The bike even came with a trunk bag that I keep the lock and other bits in. After a week I got a flat and brought it in and they fixed the flat quickly. Then I asked if I could borrow a pump in case the flat happened when I wasn't near them, and they happily loaned me one (I did pay for a patch kit, figuring I can always use more patches at when I get home). I had also broken the front fender (a stick got jammed in it when I was on a gravel road ride), and they didn't hassle me about it. When I first arrived at the Bicycle Cellar, I had been contemplating purchasing a cheap bike on Craigslist and selling or donating it when I left. While the bike I rented for 19 days cost me more than it would have to buy a one, I got a much better bike and the freedom it has provided me is priceless! I'd be much happier to have my own bicycle, but the Bicycle Cellar gets me almost there. Thanks, Bicycle Cellar! PS. They also sell used bikes, repair bikes, sell lots of small add-ons for your bike, as well as nibblies and water supplements (electrolytes, etc.). They also are open to members for 4am-midnight for bicycle parking with lockers and showers (you are issued a membership "smart card" that lets you in when they are otherwise closed). They're right next to the light rail, so you can ride to the Cellar, take a quick shower, and jump on the light rail to work. How cool is that??? read more

We were supposed to rent bicycles near the Greenbelt. but decided to hit Tempe Town Lake instead. Based on the yelp reviews, we decided to visit this shop. When we got to the shop, I asked if there were any bikes that would fit my frame. My dilemma is that some bike rental shops have limited options and I get a bike that I can barely ride and control. The guy decides to give me a bike and it looks like I would have a hard time getting off the bike, but that's all he had. Oh brother... since we were already there, I didn't want to leave and go elsewhere so I took the bike anyway. He charged our card first before even stepping foot outside. We asked for 2 hours - bill came to $43!!! That was pretty expensive, in my opinion. The last time I went to a bike rental shop, I spent $30 for two hours and they were two nice bikes (7 gears and fit my frame perfectly). This time, my bike was not great. Three gears. Heavy and I barely could control it. It was pretty bad. We ended up returning the bikes in 1.5 hours. I probably wouldn't come back. Tip: Since it was early, I didn't think to check the internet to see if there were any events going on. Before deciding to rent bikes or spend time at the lake, research first. The hawaiian festival was going on and it was giving me anxiety trying to maneuver my way in and out to not hit anyone especially since I had a bike that was a little too big for me. read more

This is my shop of choice. Friendly helpful staff. A decent stash of odds and ends, a unique location and even a bike valet shower option make the cellar a great choice. Their location near campus means there are a fair number of people with cheap campus cruisers going in, but they also are a strong resource for bike packing and touring riders. The prices on maintenance items are pretty good ie lubes and tubes. They also have a few tire pumps for general use which is nice and they also sell drinks should the dry hot desert air get to you. read more

Great customer service. Rent led two bikes to stroll around Tempe Town Lake which is about half mile from the shop. It's a bit difficult to find as its integrated in the same building as the bus stop. There's a minimum of two hours and it was $20/bike for two hours. This is the only tiff I have. Lads in this shop answered my e-mail quickly, gave me a reasonable estimate, chatted with me about a couple of issues, promised the bike for Saturday but had it ready two days early, and charged me about half of what I'd have paid in Jackson Hole. I went in for a tune up and paid $60. However, after riding my bike it seemed as if nothing was really done. Every time I changed gears my foot would bounce off the pedal which resulted in an accident that caused me to fall off my bike pretty hard. Plus the gear shifters were stiff, and remained so after the original tune up. Overall, I am just not satisfied with the work that was originally meant to be completed. Additionally, I felt like every time I asked if something could be repaired, I was told I had to buy a new part. Although, when I watched the older gentleman tune up my bike after coming in the shop for a second tune up that was free due to it being within the 30 day warranty, I left the shop with everything working pretty solid. I just don't understand how my bike went from needing new shifters and a new de-railer to all the sudden being perfectly fine after another tune up. Needless to say I won't recommend this place nor do I trust them. read more

When I found my debit card, I stepped back into the bike cellar at 5:55 p.m. and was greeted with "Sorry I already closed the register, we open at 7:00 tomorrow". 1. Your hours are 7a.m. - 6p.m., I arrived 5 minutes prior to six! 2. I was trying to give you my business during operational hours! I was completely shocked at the lack of customer service as well as the lack of consideration. I don't commute to work at this time since I work at home, but I took my bike to John and The Bicycle Cellar to help me with my gears. One of the teeth on my ring was bent and even before that, I was having trouble with my chain falling off and some noisy shifting. John went above and beyond. He repaired the tooth in my gear, adjusted the gears and cleaned and lubed my chain. My gears have never worked this well...even when it was new! His attention to detail is a great thing! Excellent Rentals! We were in town for the week and looking to rent bikes one afternoon to ride on the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt. We needed five bikes and due to some stores not doing rentals (due to Covid) and lots of people visiting for spring break, many stores were sold out. The staff at Bicycle Cellar was very accommodating. They agreed to hold our bikes for 20 minutes while we drove over, they helped ensure we all had the right-sized bike, they found a comfortable helmet for my 10-year-old and even put a bell on her bike when she asked for one. We've rented bikes in many cities and these were probably the nicest we've had anywhere. Three Cannondale road bikes, one kids Cannondale road bike and a beach cruiser - all with upgraded padded seats. The shop is close to the Greenbelt and the staff gave us great directions to get there. We would definitely recommend! read more

The Bicycle Cellar is a bike shop/membership facility that allows bike commuters to come in, lock their bike, shower, and head over to work in the nearby area. My review is for the bike shop, not the commuter facility. I initially heard of this place via google as I was looking for a bike. There isn't a huge selection of bikes here, but you'll find some good used bikes, and some new ones in the store. I was very impressed with the honesty and knowledge of the staff here. The most striking part is that they don't try to push a sale. If they don't have whats best for you, they'll recommend someone else. In my case, i ended up renting two bikes to get a feel for bike commuting - the rentals were ~30/day, but that included helmets, panniers and whatever else was needed. The second bike I tried, I loved. I ended up buying that model (not that exact bike) from them. They made great recommendations on tires, accessories, lights etc, at each stage offering me various options, and alternate ideas in case i didn't or couldn't afford purchase something. My point is that their attitude to the customer was - if you don't want it, we understand. but here's why it makes sense to have one. you can buy it from here, and we'll give you discounts, or you can shop around as well.. all in all, some very knowledgeable folks in there, who love bikes, and really focus on customers. Best bike rental experience I have had yet. I was in from out of town and wanted a break before my meetings so I rented a Kona mountain bike and rode up to the off road trails at Papago park. Bike rode like butter over the rocks and I had a blast! They had newer Kona bikes for rent in most frame sizes, were very reasonably priced (my 4 hour rental was only around $20), provided any accessories I needed (locks, bags, etc) with the rental, and they even did a quick mechanical check on the whole bike before my ride. Couldn't ask for more! I came back with the bike pretty dirty from riding around off road, and I was worried they'd complain or surcharge me for cleaning. Instead, they just grinned and said they were happy someone put the bike to such good use. True bike lovers. I wish there was a bike shop like this in every city. read more

I just bought a bike from the Bike Cellar this past week. I had been saving my pennies for awhile and my primary bike just got put out of service in an accident right before lock down. I needed something to get around so I took all my pennies and started looking. Most places kept selling out of my size and preferred bike. I started chatting with the folks at Bike Cellar and communication was an absolute breeze. We texted the entire conversation, suggestions were made. There was no pressure, I researched suggested options, decided on a bike they had in stock, added some things onto it (for an incredible discount I might say) and got the invoice online. I scheduled the pick up for the next day and they took safety very seriously. They wiped down my card, the bike, I stayed outside and then I rode home on an impeccable and fantastic Surly Bridgeclub. I am incredibly happy with the bike, loved the discount given for add ons, and one full tune up available in the next 6 months? It was a stellar deal and good folks. I did some work in Tempe that necessitated finding a place to store my bicycle. The Bicycle Cellar was a lucky find. The shop is conveniently located in a safe area and is remarkably clean. The employees were always helpful (repair or riding route suggestions). Also, having parts available to purchase, as well as pumps/tools/lockers/showers available to use is an amazing convenience. They even packed and shipped my bicycle for a very reasonable fee when my contract was finished. This is a great place to do business if you have bicycle needs in Phoenix. read more
