The other evening we found ourselves driving past Wetherby in rush hour. Of course we were hungry. My boyfriend, who comes from that neck of the woods, suggested that we venture in and try Bengal Brasserie. We went to the Burley one a few months ago and really enjoyed it so it seemed like a good plan. After the obligatory five hours driving round while my boyfriend displayed his extreme lack of understanding regarding one way systems and where one is allowed to park, we made it in.
It is very different from the Burley one, but that is understandable. The Burley one is sandwiched between the students of Burley and the new professionals of Kirkstall. The food was delicious but the decor wasn't anything special. The Wetherby clientele is much more middle class and the lighting is soft, the napkins thick and the chairs suede.
The food was the same though. The pickle tray was huge, with enough for a party of eight. I didn't have a starter, but boyfriend had his trademark seekh kebab and pronounced it the best he'd ever had. He has literally had hundreds. High praise.
He had the same meal that he had at Burley, a chicken and mince thing that I can't remember and pronounced it not as healthy as Burley. Apparently that's a plus point. I had Badami Chicken which was mild and creamy with many nuts. I loved the nuts, but there was slightly too much coconut in it for my taste. Perversely I love coconut curry, but I prefer the coconut to operate under the radar. Sundries were lovely and the service was impeccable. We even got a complimentary drink at the end. Definitely worth another visit. read more
