After a week of pub grub and clichéd British food, it was time for some curry. Yelp to the rescue!…read more We found Akbars just a few blocks from the train station, so it made a good stop after the National Railway Museum. I thought the dishes were fine quality, tasty and not too spicy. Good prices and good portions, suitable for sharing. Loved the atmosphere, with low lighting from chandeliers with red highlights and lounge music. It seemed more modern and hip than a standard Indian joint. The crowd was a mix of small groups of businessmen and tourists, with a few families like us.

Thanks, Adam! Wandering the streets after sightseeing, I let Yelp lead me to a top rated…read morerestaurant. I was not even slightly disappointed because Akbar's is an excellent curry house. Even though I walked in at 5:15, they were happy to see me and brought me to a table near the window. The menu was a bit strange - a solidly laminated sheet - but it had all the usual curries that I've come to expect in this country. And so instead of going with the usual, I let my eye choose. I started with the Liver Tikka. I've never had this before and I would recommend it. Not at all "livery", three good sized pieces arrived on a sizzling plate with some sauteed onions and a bowl of mint sauce. Th mint was a big help because this was seriously hot. Not spicy hot, temperature hot. Wow! For mains, the "handi" was listed as 'just like we have it at home' on the menu so I thought I'd give that a try. I chose lamb instead of chicken. It took about ten minutes (the waiter warned me it would be 15) and I also opted for two chapati to go with it. Again, very hot coming from the kitchen and it had a whole lot of flavor and spice, but it wasn't "hot" spicy just really tasty. Lots of small pieces of lamb in a sauce that is beyond description. Let's just say that it was excellent and the chapati was perfect for scooping. No dessert, but the cold bottle of Kingfisher was perfect (first time in a bottle, it's usually draft). A great meal!

The bill was about £94 and we had starters and mains, beer, sparkling water and cappuccinos We declined the offer of poppadoms. I opted for a paneer starter which came battered with a red dip and a small bit of salad. It was all delicious. I also got the chance to try their chicken liver starter which was stellar. I've been around a long time; I've been dining in 'Indian' restaurants from 1976 mostly Bangladeshi or Pakistani folks and it's the first time I've come across chicken liver as a choice - if I return here I'll ask for it as a main course. My main was again paneer - mattar paneer and I asked for and got extra fresh chopped coriander. I has a Peshwari nan with it. It's clear from my nan bread they don't use a tandoori oven. Again the food was very tasty and my wife and I shared as she took pilau rice. Her main was chicken tikka masala as usual and her usual starter: lamb seekh kebab. Our friends hail from South Shields - sand dancers apparently. They too enjoyed their food, confessing that the curry choices here were much different to their favourite local places so it was good to try something different with the monkfish declared a hit. The service was tip top and courteous. The seats comfy and no downsides.
