    Chicken balti with naan
    Sarah G.

Smaller Indian restaurant with really good food. Servers/waiters are attentive and knowledgeable. Getting the naan and rice with your meal is plenty. Got the chicken tandoori, which was pretty good! Definitely a place to try if you have a craving for Indian food.

The restaurant is called bengal brasserie and is very nice!!

After a week of pub grub and clichéd British food, it was time for some curry. Yelp to the rescue!…read more We found Akbars just a few blocks from the train station, so it made a good stop after the National Railway Museum. I thought the dishes were fine quality, tasty and not too spicy. Good prices and good portions, suitable for sharing. Loved the atmosphere, with low lighting from chandeliers with red highlights and lounge music. It seemed more modern and hip than a standard Indian joint. The crowd was a mix of small groups of businessmen and tourists, with a few families like us.

Thanks, Adam! Wandering the streets after sightseeing, I let Yelp lead me to a top rated…read morerestaurant. I was not even slightly disappointed because Akbar's is an excellent curry house. Even though I walked in at 5:15, they were happy to see me and brought me to a table near the window. The menu was a bit strange - a solidly laminated sheet - but it had all the usual curries that I've come to expect in this country. And so instead of going with the usual, I let my eye choose. I started with the Liver Tikka. I've never had this before and I would recommend it. Not at all "livery", three good sized pieces arrived on a sizzling plate with some sauteed onions and a bowl of mint sauce. Th mint was a big help because this was seriously hot. Not spicy hot, temperature hot. Wow! For mains, the "handi" was listed as 'just like we have it at home' on the menu so I thought I'd give that a try. I chose lamb instead of chicken. It took about ten minutes (the waiter warned me it would be 15) and I also opted for two chapati to go with it. Again, very hot coming from the kitchen and it had a whole lot of flavor and spice, but it wasn't "hot" spicy just really tasty. Lots of small pieces of lamb in a sauce that is beyond description. Let's just say that it was excellent and the chapati was perfect for scooping. No dessert, but the cold bottle of Kingfisher was perfect (first time in a bottle, it's usually draft). A great meal!

Akbars - Family sized garlic naan. Enough for the family alright, or the family could use these bad boys for curtains.

Some of the best Indian food I've had across America and England, and I eat a lot of Indian food…read more Such a huge variety of curries, and they really do taste different. Each one is super flavorful, and I love their ability to make it as mild or spicy as you want. I really think you can't go wrong just trying things here, but I recommend the Madras and Desi Handi especially. Also love that everything comes out steaming hot -- so hot it's placed on metal pedestals. Keeps the curries hot much longer. And the portions! Normally I order 2-3 curries per person at Indian restaurants. Here, each one is a big enough meal on its own. I do wish there were 1/2 portions, so we could share and try more things, but I appreciate the amount you get for your money here. I will say, I didn't love the chicken tikka masala my friend got. It was a bit too on the sweet side for me. And that's normally a dish I love. So maybe just don't order that. And I do wish they had dosas, although I know that's South Indian. It's just a nice gluten-free "bread" option for people like me who can't eat naan or roti.

Came here for some high quality Indian food and that's what I got!…read more Visiting England, one thing on my to-do list was to have a nice Indian meal. Why? Because Indian food as I know and love it can actually be traced back to Britain. Mmmmm curries. Who doesn't love Indian food, and where better to eat it than a country where much of what I love about it was perfected? Came in with a friend and was seated fairly quickly. While there were others in the restaurant, it wasn't bustling. I ordered us a bottle of Malbec, which was very reasonably priced and was up to snuff taste-wise. For food, we ordered a vindaloo, korma, and paneer. All were delicious! The perfect level of spice on each of the dishes-- even though three dishes plus naan and rice is a lot of food, between the two of us we somehow nearly finished it. Viceroy met my high standards and expectations for a spices feast in York. Even though its outside the wall and main tourist area, I think it's worth a little jaunt :)
