Mumbai was one of the best restaurants I had the pleasure to dine at in York. I love Indian food, but it is so rare to find really good authentic Indian food here in the States, but while in York a visit to Mumbai was the experience I have always dreamed of. My coworkers and I ordered a bunch of different dishes on the menu and had the restaurant serve them in a family style that we could all enjoy a bit of everything. The dishes I remember are lamb vindaloo, chicken vindaloo, butter chicken, naan bread, chicken curry, vegetable curry, and a few more. Plenty of food was had that evening. Satisfied! Perfection, delicious food! My first time having Indian food. It never occurred to me to trying Indian food because of the spiciness and I cannot handle spicy. Thankfully I was introduced to this place and tried it out with my love. We did not make any reservation, walked in and were politely greeted. The waiter sat us down and almost immediately ask us what we wanted to drink. Fantastic. What a find as we were in the mood for Indian while in YORK and found Mumbai Lounge. There was another option but we went for it and so glad we did. Service was top notch, food was amazing and with such great flavor. The King Prawn Zalfrey (think that was it) was hot but made the meal. I struggle to find a bad restaurant in York and again I am pleased to say I have failed. Walking down Fossgate in York I had already passed a couple that I know are excellent, but we called in to the Mumbai, we hadn't booked but there was a table available down stairs. The staff were very pleasant and smartly dressed in traditional attire. The food, well it has got to have been some of the best Indian food I have had in many years. I had as a starter Chicken Surprise and as a main course Salimar Karai, my partner had Monk Fish all I can say is the taste and flavours were fantastic and I was only too sorry when we had finished. We're not connoisseurs of Indian food but we enjoyed the Mumbai Lounge quite a bit. We were thinking about going to another place but our Concierge recommended the Mumbai instead. He was not wrong! I asked for a dish that was not too highly spiced and the waiter recommended the Chicken Shashlik. It was just right, tasty yet not boring! My wife had the Special Tikka Masala with lamb, chicken and prawns and she enjoyed it very much as well. Both were served with Basmati rice and my dish came with a salad that I didn't even try because my meal was so large. Service was prompt and friendly and the dining room was comfortable. read more

The best Indian food I've ever had was in York-- go figure? This restaurant came at the recommendation of our B&B owner, and after this meal I would have happily left all dining choices to him for the remainder of our trip. The inside of the restaurant is surprisingly modern, and it's bigger than it looks, as there's a dining room downstairs as well as the main floor. The atmosphere is fun, and service is helpful. The best part, of course, is the food. I tried the Balti Butter Chicken, and it was unlike any butter chicken I've ever had in the states. My mouth is watering thinking about it. My husband had the Shalimar Kharni, chicken breast with peppers, ginger, spices and touch of cream, and loved it as well. Even the rice and the paratha were amazing. I've forgotten what we had for dessert and their dessert menu isn't available online to figure it out, but I remember it being yogurt-based and delicious. The drink menu is decent, with plenty of mixed drink and beer/cider options. The Indian food we had in London put everything I'd previously had to shame, and this put the London Indian food to shame-- at half the price. If you ever find yourself in York, eat here. And I wholeheartedly suggest finding yourself in York as well. read more

Brilliant and Gluten Free. Very nice Indian food some of the best iv had and there is a large selection of gluten free meals reasonably priced for the amount of food you get and it is very nice food. The staff were also very nice and gave quick service, nice atmosphere as well. Overall I would highly recommend here for a good quality Indian at a reasonable price with good service. Service could be improved. Had to ask for napkins and water, multiple times. Food (albeit tasty) took 45 minutes to arrive.

In general, was average to slightly above average Indian food. Atmosphere was nice and price was ok (for the lunch special). The "chaat" chicken appetizer was amazingly delicious and the stewed lamb dish I had was great. The chicken tikka masala was sickeningly sweet and the chicken was tough (not good); also didn't care for the karhai (meat was tough and too much sauce -- not a good karhai). Amazing food and atmosphere! I have been to eat here a few times and whenever anyone mentions they want Indian food I bring them here! The service is great, attentive and speedy and the food is presented very nicely. The decor is really beautiful too. it makes you feel as if you are eating in a really classy establishment, yet the prices are reasonable and about the same as most Indian restaurants. A hidden gem. Absolutely stunning flavours, one of the best curries I've had the pleasure to eat. The place was full on a Monday evening so perhaps it's best to reserve even on a weekday. Myself and a friend were seated at the bar for a drink and a table was made available within a few minutes. The staff were friendly and helpful. But it's the flavours in dishes that lift this place above just another curry house. So tasty and generous portions. I had a chicken naga shatkara and while it's generally a hot dish it was the blend of spices that stood out it wasn't simply a test of how hot can we make a dish and turn it into an eating competition as can happen with spicy dishes. Gushing praise indeed. I must work in York more often! read more

Friendly staff is about the best I can say for this very popular restaurant in Fossgate. Our party of four reserved for a Saturday night. The noise level on the ground floor was overwhelming. Two long tables of rowdy revellers kept our conversation to a minimum. The food is mediocre, although generous in portion. Due to previous reviews here and on Tripadvisor along with there own website went here with high expectation.I would describe it as a modern contemporary restaurant that serves Indian food.It is not your typical "Indian" so if you prefer a more traditional Indian atmosphere this is probably not for you. We were seated near the door which meant we got an icy blast every time the door was opened,my back suffered the next day! The food was very good but not any better that any other good quality Indian and was served hot and efficiently by friendly staff.I must say the mixed tandoori starter was the stand out dish,it was excellent and presented very nicely, the mains were slightly down spiced in my opinion and even though we ordered two different mains both were pretty similar. My husband and i ate here for the second time, on our visit to York last week. We were not disappointed. The food was gorgeous. A thoroughly authentic curry. The service was quick, the waiters very polite and courteous. We are both connoisseurs on curry, and always choose one of the hottest dishes on the menu. I love a phal strength curry, bit the waiter informed me of an even hotter one, being the Naga curry, which i will try next time. Wouldn't go anywhere else!! read more

I've been to worse, I've been to better. This was mediocre at best. We had booked a table, which was great as it was a busy evening. First, we got one starter wrong. That was replaced minutes later, perhaps thanks to the microwave that was heavily used in the kitchen? The restaurant has horrible acoustics, we barely heard anything the waiters said, and half-screamed to each other, mostly thanks to the table behind us with 8 people celebrating a birthday. Man course was one of the most plain and bland Chicken tikkas I have had, and was accompanied by a slightly undercooked pilau rice. My companion asked to get his dish extra hot and spicy, but you had to really concentrate to find a difference between our two dishes. They brought extra chilies and sauces on request, but that's not the same as cooking a spicy sauce, is it? One of the waiters was really nice, and he actually asked us to come back another time, then 'we would get better food'. Sorry, but we won't. We had to help ourselves to refilling wine glasses, and got one refill of water the whole evening. Not impressed, and many curry houses can do just as good/bad food. read more
