Mumbai was one of the best restaurants I had the pleasure to dine at in York. I love Indian food, but it is so rare to find really good authentic Indian food here in the States, but while in York a visit to Mumbai was the experience I have always dreamed of. My coworkers and I ordered a bunch of different dishes on the menu and had the restaurant serve them in a family style that we could all enjoy a bit of everything. The dishes I remember are lamb vindaloo, chicken vindaloo, butter chicken, naan bread, chicken curry, vegetable curry, and a few more. Plenty of food was had that evening. And everything we had was extremely good.

Yum! Popular Indian restaurant located in the trendy bar/restaurant area on Fossgate. Yummy food and late night hours. Reservations highly recommended

Fantastic. What a find as we were in the mood for Indian while in YORK and found Mumbai Lounge. There was another option but we went for it and so glad we did. Service was top notch, food was amazing and with such great flavor. The King Prawn Zalfrey (think that was it) was hot but made the meal. Would definitely go back again when we come back this way in the future.

I struggle to find a bad restaurant in York and again I am pleased to say I have failed. Walking down Fossgate in York I had already passed a couple that I know are excellent, but we called in to the Mumbai, we hadn't booked but there was a table available down stairs. The staff were very pleasant and smartly dressed in traditional attire. The food, well it has got to have been some of the best Indian food I have had in many years. I had as a starter Chicken Surprise and as a main course Salimar Karai, my partner had Monk Fish all I can say is the taste and flavours were fantastic and I was only too sorry when we had finished. I shall look forward to calling here again.

It took just over an hour to get our meal. Their kitchen can not cope with the amount of people. The food was good but nothing special.

Service could be improved. Had to ask for napkins and water, multiple times. Food (albeit tasty) took 45 minutes to arrive.

Busy, noisy, lots of energy. Good butter chicken & garlic naan...wait staff is eager to serve. Looks popular with the locals.

Best quality Indian in York. Top, welcoming staff and high quality food. Chicken Dhansak was perfect, house rose was average.

After a week of pub grub and clichéd British food, it was time for some curry. Yelp to the rescue!…read more We found Akbars just a few blocks from the train station, so it made a good stop after the National Railway Museum. I thought the dishes were fine quality, tasty and not too spicy. Good prices and good portions, suitable for sharing. Loved the atmosphere, with low lighting from chandeliers with red highlights and lounge music. It seemed more modern and hip than a standard Indian joint. The crowd was a mix of small groups of businessmen and tourists, with a few families like us.

Thanks, Adam! Wandering the streets after sightseeing, I let Yelp lead me to a top rated…read morerestaurant. I was not even slightly disappointed because Akbar's is an excellent curry house. Even though I walked in at 5:15, they were happy to see me and brought me to a table near the window. The menu was a bit strange - a solidly laminated sheet - but it had all the usual curries that I've come to expect in this country. And so instead of going with the usual, I let my eye choose. I started with the Liver Tikka. I've never had this before and I would recommend it. Not at all "livery", three good sized pieces arrived on a sizzling plate with some sauteed onions and a bowl of mint sauce. Th mint was a big help because this was seriously hot. Not spicy hot, temperature hot. Wow! For mains, the "handi" was listed as 'just like we have it at home' on the menu so I thought I'd give that a try. I chose lamb instead of chicken. It took about ten minutes (the waiter warned me it would be 15) and I also opted for two chapati to go with it. Again, very hot coming from the kitchen and it had a whole lot of flavor and spice, but it wasn't "hot" spicy just really tasty. Lots of small pieces of lamb in a sauce that is beyond description. Let's just say that it was excellent and the chapati was perfect for scooping. No dessert, but the cold bottle of Kingfisher was perfect (first time in a bottle, it's usually draft). A great meal!
