Rather than the sort of place you go to for a pre-going-out meal, Aagrah is the kind of restaurant that offers you such a brilliant dining experience, that you'll probably find it IS you evening out, rather than just a preliminary eating venue before you hit The Wardrobe, or another swanky bar in the area. Right next to the BBC Leeds building, Aagrah is a rather impressively large restaurant, with a modern, tasteful interior. They have managed to fuse indian cuisie with a posher dining experience. there is a bar area that you can sit in whilst you wait for your table. There normally is a wait due to its popularity. Drinks are notably rather expensive, with 2 large bottles of Cobra fetching over £10.. Larger tables include a 'lazy susan' which makes food easier to share. The food is fantastic, and the staff are very helpful indeed. Any questions or special requests will be received well, and they are happy to help. This includes providing us with a Phall to see who could eat the hottest curry as a prelim to ouur actual meal.. The final bill only totted up to £60 for 5 of us. This was a pleasant surprise, particularly due to the dining surroundings, you would be forgiven for thinking it would have cost more.

Chicken biryani was overrated and expensive and the interiors are just tacky giving the vibe that they are trying too hard

This handy Indian restaurant just below the West Yorkshire Playhouse and opposite the Wardrobe is a great place for late night post-theatre curry.

Head past the massive flame grill, however, and you'll find a neat little restaurant section towards the back, decked out in a surprisingly classy style. The food here is fantastically varied, from meaty mixed grills and sirloin steaks to curries, burgers and chips, making Kebabish a good stop if you've got a party with mixed tastes, although they may look at you strangely when you first lead them through the unpromising front door. With cheap prices - just two quid for a burger and around a fiver for a main course - they often get busy, so get here early to get a table, or stop by after the pub for a takeaway that's a cut above the usual greasy kebab.

Six of us rolled up one lazy Thursday afternoon, and upon reaching the front door, there was an exchange of glances and looking at our dear friend as if she was loco. Stepping through the doors didn't instil any further confidences, but when we were shown our table towards the back of the restaurant, a collective sigh was exhaled. Nice and clean, laid out, smart but not too fancy, we could finally relax and let the smell of the grill hit us. With a mixture of kebabs, curries, salads and sundries on our table it was nice to see what we were glad to have ordered and what we were jealous we hadn't. I had the tandoori, which was lovely, not too dry and really nice in the flavour dept, not too overpowering without being dry and dull. I faired better than some of my eat buddies, as one found her curry to be too greasy, and used a large portion of her naan soaking it up as to detract from the taste. Whilst everything was nice, and there was nothing hideously wrong with the food, it was just nice. Nothing outstanding, but a place I wouldn't object to returning to. I was disappointed at my friend for bigging it up so much, as I said, nice, but not worthy of going out of your way when there are plenty of Indian food eateries in and around the city centre.

Wow! This place gets packed on a Saturday night. We were brought here by a friend who is quite the…read morecurry connoisseur, so I figured he would know a good place for a great meal. I thought the waiting system worked a little strange here because when you walk in, you queue up and basically shuffle along the line until it's your turn to be seated. Only then do they ask how many in your party for a table. Quite a good system, though; seems more fair than standard procedure AND the line went by really quickly. Okay, let's get down to the good stuff- The food was delicious and I really thought the meal was surprisingly authentic. For starters we had the kebabs, and also a fish appetiser (I didn't order these so I don't know the names on the menu) and they were both cooked perfectly. Both appetisers were so flavourful and juicy and were complemented excellently by the sauces provided. For my main I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala Desi (about £7.45) and they didn't ask how spicy I wanted it, which was better in my opinion, because I like that I can enjoy the dish the way they want me to taste it. We each ordered a naan (I believe £1.95, but don't hold me to it) which were probably about 12" inches and round-ish in shape. They were nice and fluffy and as the last one arrived later than the rest, I can surmise it probably came straight out of the oven. The chicken tikka masala dish was nicely cooked and as you took a bite you could taste all the flavours dripping off of the chicken as if each had their turn; first up the flavour of the tikka sauce, then a light but perfect addition of the taste of the coriander, then, finally, the bite of the spice. It was quite spicy, could be a bit too spicy for some, but I thought the spice kept the integrity of the dish. I could feel myself getting a bit warm but luckily I had asked for tap water and alternated between shoving the deliciousness in my mouth and taking a few quick sips. Sadly, the water ran out soon enough and it seemed hard to flag someone down for a refill. To be fair, I didn't ask, so not a comment against their service. Eventually I resorted to taking short breaks between bites. Maybe people who enjoy more spice wouldn't need breaks. Food was served in a reasonable amount of time, which was surprising considering every seat in the house was taken. They also have a wide selection of desserts, although we didn't partake. Service was average, nothing really to note. If I was in the area I'd probably come again.

It sits on the busy Kirkstall Road opposite the Cardigan Fields complex, and is usually almost full, especially on weekend evenings (best to book if this is your preferred time of visit). Its popularity is due to the fact that it presents hugely tasty traditional Indian and Pakistani cuisine in unpretentious surroundings (true, it could do with a bit of a refurb but it works for me). The meals are very reasonably priced to say that it is clearly cooked by highly talented and experienced Indian chefs, and service is very fast and as polite as it should be. I decided to bite the bullet and went for a chicken madras, which is more spice that I can usually handle, but it went down a treat, especially when washed down with the bottled Indian beer. The naan breads were glorious too. This place really is a cut above most of the rest. I'm a big fan.

Straddling the gap between upmarket restaurant and simple curry house, Sheesh Mahal has all the comfort and service of a fancy restaurant with none of the pretensions, and the food is of a comparable quality to restaurants that where you'd happily pay twice the price. I have visited here on a number of occasions, and over time tried pretty much every vegetarian option on the menu, and each time have found the food, service and atmosphere faultless. A few people I know have complained to me that the décor is a bit dated, and it certainly won't win any prizes for interior design, but if you're capable of ignoring a bit of peeling wallpaper you'll be rewarded with one of the best - and best value - Indian restaurants in town.
