Currently celebrating 25 years of successful business, Rajas is undoubtedly one of the best curry houses in Leeds. Despite it's surroundings (Harehills is slightly run down and nowhere near glitzy glam), it is a true diamond in the rough. Well known for it's quality and delicious dishes, it has been voted one of the Top Ten Indian Restaurants in the UK twice by the Times newspaper. The menu is an array of all the greats you would expect, at extremely competitive prices. Most starters are around £1 - £2 (apart from the fresh water prawns which are more like £5) and mains between £4 and £10. If there is something you would like which is not on the menu they will cook it for a service charge of 10%.

Proclamations of it's greatness didn't really fill me up with much hope of a good curry. It looks like many I've been in and walked past and when I've left I've felt completely deflated that I dared to get my hopes up. Even the "really and honestly it's a beauty" didn't do it for me. Walking through the doors, in the middle of my party, we were all given a hearty welcoming by the smartly dressed staff. We were shortly shown to our table, and the thing I was really impressed by was the open kitchen, making it easy to view how our future belly fodder was to be cooked and prepared. I'm always impressed with open kitchens, that nothing to hide approach instills much confidence in me. The menu. All the usual starters, sundries, mains and sides, every form of samosa, pakora, tandoori, korma, massala, dopiaza, biryani, roti, naan, soft drinks, beers, wines, juices, lassi. So what makes it special? The taste. Fresh, mouthwatering, full flavoured, homecooking. It really does earn the accolades that have been given to Raja's over the past 25 years. Several silver dishes adorned our table, steaming hot and smelling divine, the biryani my personal favourite, with the rice not dry and sad, but moist and delicious, no sign of a microwave in sight, and the curry sauce was a delicious accompaniment. Yum. We were well tended to throughout the evening, and the service quality matched the quality of the food. Price wise it was unbelievably reasonable, with it working out between £9 and £15 a head depending on meat free, meat, and prawn options. All of us had at least one drink and a main, and the rest either had a starter or a side order. Love it.

The only 2 features that was disappointing in the AM kitchen is the very bright lighting and the fact the owners keep half of the staffs tips . The interior design is very Dickens like but so bright you could see it from the moon and obviously the owners have taken from him also in their acquiring of the wait staffs hard earned tips . I have to admit, as soon as I saw the location I was delighted. It's no more than a 15 minute walk or so from Hyde Park, so easily navigate-able, and stands proudly on the corner. Once you get inside the warmth of the place (literally) and the staff greet you immediately. We were something like 20 strong, and had to wait for a table to finish before we could sit, so stood a bit awkwardly in the entrance - not that it was CC's fault, but as a group there's not quite room in the waiting area. I've heard that in times gone by they'd send folks over to the pub across the road in that kind of scenario, but that has been turned into a Tesco Metro. Sad times. We didn't wait long though, and soon enough piled into our seats. The waitresses kept us well watered with water and drinks orders throughout the night, which was a great touch. I wasn't boozing so particularly appreciated fresh water being replenished without having to ask. As we were a big group, the put on a set meal for that, and so first came a selection of dips and poppadoms. I wasn't a huge fan of the yoghurt dips, as they were a bit tart, but that's just me - everyone else adored them. As well as regular poppadoms we also had cumin seed ones. Next up came starters, which consisted of various battered delicious bites, and some minced lamb kebab type bits of meat, and tikka chicken pieces. All of those were excellent. In particular I liked the battered potato and tikka chicken - it was cooked to perfection and not in the least bit dry. Lastly came the mains. We had a selection of about 10 different dishes, maybe more, and all dived in. You guys, these were the kiddy. This was the one. So, in the end I only tried a few dishes before feeling utterly stuffed, but I had a lamb and mushroom dish, medium spiced, in a red (tomato?) sauce. A chicken and mushroom, which wasn't quite a korma, but had a delicious flavour and cream based sauce. Those two were the stand out for me, but we had all kinds of veggie, spicy, and other going on. Not a bite was disappointing. All freshly made. And the naan?! Sugary! I can't tell you how much this made sense once you mixed it with the curry. Just trust me and go with it. Basically, I've found a new favourite in this family restaurant. Why not five stars? Well, I've only been once, so ought to go again just to be sure. But every bit of this is fantastic. It's not fancy, but it's cosy, the staff are amongst the friendliest I've experienced in Leeds, and the food is exquisite. Oh - and the price? £15/head for that banquet!

The poppadoms were made with lentil flour so were totally Gluten Free and tasted delicious! Following this we were served with a very generous mixed starter including onion bhaji, mushroom and potato pakoras, shami kebab & chicken tikka - all tasting amazing! Then onto the mains, as much of a squeeze as it was to find room for them, we had a wide selection of different curry dishes (with my personal favourite of chicken & mushroom) and the lamb dish was cooked to perfection. Not only was the food impressive, but the personal attention from Kate when we arrived and the friendly waiting staff all made the meal really enjoyable.. and finally rounded off by a visit from the chef & co owner Karim dropped by the tables for a chat. Fusia was a nice addition to the Centenary Square area of Bradford, and prices were reasonable, food was good, value and service was exceptional. In the past three or so years, I'm afraid it's all gone down hill from there. What started out as an all you can eat buffet, with lean and tasty Chinese cuisine, three distinct courses; starters, mains and desserts, refill drinks, good customer service and smiles and pleasantries and all that has now ended up as an inflated prices buffet with time limit (who the frig puts a time limit on food) of about 90 minutes or an hour depending on your day and time of day, no refills, and quite frankly sub par food. Ok so the details, the establishment itself is rather nice, clean pale wood and cream leather stools, set together in formations of long tables or tables for two, you don't ever really feel out of place in here eating by yourself if you're grabbing a quick power lunch and you're on a time limit. And on the other hand, the long benches make good for larger groups. Nice clean lines, gives a nice light bright atmosphere to the place, especially with the large glass window that fills the restaurant with light on nice days. Back in the day you ordered a soft drink and you paid more for it, but you could refill it, grand idea, not any more, the food was always piping hot and fresh, and trays were regularly turned out, lately, if it's running low and looking a bit oldish, you have to ask for them to refill the trays up, won tons and spring rolls and such all seem to leave a healthy residue of grease on the plate, which as my dear friend discovered, is whisked out from under your snout before you've had chance to place the fork down. My veggie mates never used to have much trouble finding something to snaffle, but the last ditch attempt we had left her eating broccoli and vegetarian starters. Dessert used to save this, but the ice cream machine complete with plethora of syrups and bits and bobs has now been replaced by really crap ice-cream in boxes, all piled up on top of each other, open, stuck in a freezer with residual previous scoop marks from other flavours. Nice(!) Other dessert items include Jammy Dodgers, mini Swiss rolls cut in half, jaffa cakes, all kinda stale if I'm honest, and the saving grace, fresh fruit. And the wholesome family relaxed vibe got shot out of the water, when I actually witnessed two members of staff rushing a family out who had been there 60 minutes as their time was up, they actually looked more surprised than peeved, they were relaxing over food, and enjoying conversation, the place wasn't packed, in fact it was on the empty side which made it even more astounding, and they were bringing back plates for their children, of which were paying customers too, so it took longer to get everyone ready to eat than say a couple. Eventually the anger set in as they left without finishing their plates and loudly vowed never to return. For a place that three years ago was buzzing with people, lately it's empty, a couple of people fill tables as opposed to the usual busy atmosphere. Shame, as it really was lovely when it opened, now it's pants.
