After a week of pub grub and clichéd British food, it was time for some curry. Yelp to the rescue!…read more We found Akbars just a few blocks from the train station, so it made a good stop after the National Railway Museum. I thought the dishes were fine quality, tasty and not too spicy. Good prices and good portions, suitable for sharing. Loved the atmosphere, with low lighting from chandeliers with red highlights and lounge music. It seemed more modern and hip than a standard Indian joint. The crowd was a mix of small groups of businessmen and tourists, with a few families like us.

Thanks, Adam! Wandering the streets after sightseeing, I let Yelp lead me to a top rated…read morerestaurant. I was not even slightly disappointed because Akbar's is an excellent curry house. Even though I walked in at 5:15, they were happy to see me and brought me to a table near the window. The menu was a bit strange - a solidly laminated sheet - but it had all the usual curries that I've come to expect in this country. And so instead of going with the usual, I let my eye choose. I started with the Liver Tikka. I've never had this before and I would recommend it. Not at all "livery", three good sized pieces arrived on a sizzling plate with some sauteed onions and a bowl of mint sauce. Th mint was a big help because this was seriously hot. Not spicy hot, temperature hot. Wow! For mains, the "handi" was listed as 'just like we have it at home' on the menu so I thought I'd give that a try. I chose lamb instead of chicken. It took about ten minutes (the waiter warned me it would be 15) and I also opted for two chapati to go with it. Again, very hot coming from the kitchen and it had a whole lot of flavor and spice, but it wasn't "hot" spicy just really tasty. Lots of small pieces of lamb in a sauce that is beyond description. Let's just say that it was excellent and the chapati was perfect for scooping. No dessert, but the cold bottle of Kingfisher was perfect (first time in a bottle, it's usually draft). A great meal!

From the spicy starters to the sumptuous mains, it doesn't matter if you taste ventures more towards the creamy korma, the marvellous marsala or the sumptuously strong rogan josh, there's something for everyone here. The accompaniments are equally delicious and the drinks are served to perfection (the sour fizz is an effervescent delight). With plenty of room downstairs in the Bollywood and a wonderful atmosphere courtesy of the wall screens showing off the best of Indi-pop and bhangra tunes, Hasan's isn't the best Indian restaurant in the vicinity - it's one of the best in the city.

There's a small blessing in having one's cooker condemned, but only a small one. The blessing is…read morethat you're officially allowed to order in take away without any guilt, since you've no other option. The bad side is that I eat plenty of take away as it is. (I'm a piglet, what can I say?) In any case. I scoured Yelp for another offering of Indian delights, and sadly the main few contenders that I've not tried are pure restaurants it seems, so I decided to revisit a past favourite. As of last night, Moortown Tandoori had a 20% off deal on ordering over a certain amount, which meant I could order two mains (I know, don't judge me) and effectively get one for half price - win! I went for my usual; butter chicken, chips and mushroom pilau, supplementing that feast with an order of makhani chicken too. The arrival time was great, just as they said, and the delivery chap was plenty friendly. As I set up a dish, and began to divvy out some portions, I noticed that they'd obviously labelled the dishes incorrectly - the names of the two mains were switched up. It's not a huge problem, little did they know I was to eat both, but it's a slight concern should someone have an allergy to an ingredient. In any case, accidents happen, so I'm not too worried. I tried the butter chicken first, and it just wasn't quite up to the Naeems standard sadly. There weren't many pieces of chicken in, and the sauce was quite watery - you could see it running from the dish on the plate. However, the chicken itself was spiced beautifully and I loved the addition of sultanas. The makhani was perfect -really creamy and thick, you could taste the cheese without it overpowering the dish, and it was full of flavour. Also, it was packed with meat. The chips and rice, as standard, were also excellent so no complaints there. Basically, I'm glad I got one at less cost, as I'd have been disappointed to pay full whack when it wasn't up to their usual standard. However, on the other end of the scale, one dish was utterly lovely and I did get all that food for around £12 or so, which is a major bargain! Essentially, as ratings go, it's more 3.5 stars just for the name mix up and the watery butter chicken, but this won't stop me from ordering a makhani again with them sometime soon. And hopefully when I do, I can update back to their former glory!

There aren't any windows in that bit, you know, and it's not entirely condusive to a pleasant dining experience. Another couple arrived after our starters had arrived and were seated in the same bit but had the common sense to ask for a different table - we didn't think of that... The food, though, was superb. It's not a lavish menu in terms of the quantity of dishes, but it's got a straightforward selection of genuinely delicious dishes. No greasy poppadoms and chewy naans here, thanks very much. Reasonably priced and good service means it's a good choice for a curry in LS7, just make sure you get a good table.
