Karachi Restaurant - Karachi gristle keema April 2021

I have been a patron of the Karachi since 1973 when they we're in the cellar and a curry cost 50p…read more Recently I collected my take away orders including a keema. The keema I received was not the keema I had come to expect. More onion base than mince. The mince was very low quality with large lumps of gristle. The taste was predominantly "Cumin" & ""Chili" instead of the usual aromatic magic of masala. The prices have gone up which I don't mind but the magic has gone and quality plummeted. I wouldn't feed it to the dog, it went in the bin along with my patronage. THE END of a love affair.

All my trips to Karachi have been spur-of-the-moment things; stepping out of the cinema into (sort…read moreof) fresh air and suddenly realising we're all ravenous, our stomachs and noses lead us to the closest curry emporium. If we're not in the mood for the drunken students of Great Horton Road, we're usually drawn to Karachi. If one of our number has never been before, the sight of the place leads to protests and confusion. "Is this it?!" or "Isn't this just someone's house?" are the most common. That means when they're digging into the awesome food we can be smug and self-righteous, which makes food taste better. Karachi does look like someone's house. A grubby looking mid-terrace on a sketchy looking street. Even when you walk in, it looks like you're in someone's living room. The whole place feels very "Fawlty Towers", especially with the crap decor, mismatched floral plates and somewhat shonky service. But then the food arrives and ermahgerd. Rick Stein has visited, complete with camera crew, on several occasions. It is easy to see why - or rather, easy to taste why. The curries are great, and you should try one of the specials if you can. Suddenly it doesn't feel like you're in a strange little restaurant built into a house. Quite often, our waiter has brought us out the wrong number of cutlery, forgotten something we order, or looked at us like aliens when we remind him that we ordered drinks 20 minutes ago. In some restaurants, this kind of service comes with crap food and makes me scowl. At Karachi, the combination of fantastic food with at least one mishap per visit makes me laugh. Maybe the place is run by Basil Fawlty. Maybe it's all just a cunning ruse. Either way, bloomin' good curries.

Street is an Indian restaurant tucked away in Brighouse and has quite a reputatation. Now reputations don't mean too much to me (never a truer word said), as I like to make my own mind up but it can't hurt. To look at it's pleasant but nothing out of the ordinary but that would be doing it a huge misjustice. The staff were friendly and pretty efficient which considering it was quite busy was an added bonus these days. We decided to try the buffet downstairs and this is the main puller. If you don't like crowds then quite frankly you are probably a bit odd. Failing that and you are not odd then swerve the buffet and try the sit down menu upstairs which looks superb. As it was the buffet was fantastic value for money and very impressive Kashmiri food. Loads of vegetarian dishes and meat ones alike. Oh and anywhere that has "sexy" mushrooms has got to be somewhere to shout about. I was half expecting the fungi to be wearing provocative mini skirts and stockings but alas they were just mushrooms but mighty tasty ones at that. I'm also realiably informed that the take away meals are top notch. Rubbish name in my humble oppinion but excellent cuisine.

What a find, hidden away down a side street. Delicious food, nice atmosphere, very friendly and…read morehelpful staff. Our favourite Asian restaurant by a long way.
