Great place to stop and have lunch - beautiful deck overlooking the river, great menu with lots of variety for sandwiches, burgers, and salads. The food was delicious and obviously house-made (try the hummus!). I enjoyed a chicken panini sandwich, hubby enjoyed the Kohlen burger (with and egg on top! Yum!). Kids had pb&j and grilled cheese. Service was friendly. My only comment is service was slow, but they had someone fail to show up to work so they were a bit flustered and understaffed. read more

We stopped in after a hike to Midnight Hole with a hungry group of two adults and 3 kids. After we sat inside and ordered our meal, we were told there was a large party outside getting food, so our order would "take a bit." 50 minutes for 4 burgers and an order of nachos is longer than a bit. The bean tree cafe was our best find by far. The owner is celiac (according to another post I saw) so they have an entire section of the kitchen dedicated to gluten free eating. They were extremely knowledgeable & the chef even brought my food out personally and assured me it was 100% gluten free. Not to mention it's on a river in the mountains. If you're ever in Hartford, TN on the way to Cataloochee Valley you HAVE to try it! Very impressed and I cannot day enough about their hospitality. We will 100% be back. read more

We stopped simply by chance yesterday on our travels from Nebraska to North Carolina and had an amazing casual lunch overlooking a "tropical river." My family and I travelled from outside of Chicago and stopped here on our way back from Smoky Mountain National Park. The food, service and experience are amazing! Great for vegetarians and omnivores alike. Craft beer, organic coffee, a view overlooking the river, and the best veggie burger I've ever had. Christina gave us very attentive service and Isabella sent us out with a smile with her great conversation. My wife and I were on Vacation and we decided to go white water rafting. We had about an hour to kill before our group left out. We were hungry and decided to give the Bean Tree's Cafe a try. I loved it! I had a burger and fries. it was great, ONE of the best burgers I've ever had. The service was wonderful and quick. Just finished an awesome meal here. Love this place. The atmosphere is amazing, inside or outside dining. We chose to sit outside along the river. Just beautiful! The food was great! A good variety on the menu to choose from as well as daily specials. I had the Maui Waui chicken sandwich with chips and homemade hummus as my side. So good!! Excellent service too! My family and I stopped here to grab a drink after filling up our car. We were so intrigued by the menu and the staff that we decided to have lunch. Our waitress (a paramedic with pink hair named Monica) recommended the special to us, it was amazing. You don't expect to find fresh local food in such small towns. We had a quesadilla with goat cheese and veggies with homemade chips and salsa on the side. So refreshing! It is nice to get off the burger train when you travel. We recommend this place to everyone looking for something "different" when you travel. Just keep in mind that they make their food fresh so don't order if you don't have time to spare. To be honest with you, I was a little skeptical at first considering the location of the cafe being beside so many white water rafting places. But I figured I would give it a try with my wife, completely stunned by so many different aspects of this cafe. First was the different selections of beer and food. I love sweet water blue and they had plenty of it, but their was another beer I tried that our waitress recommended Southern Pecan beer it was amazing. Plus the prices were very reasonable. Secondly I wanted to recommend a special waitress her name is Tiffany and she was incredible in ever aspect of service. Thirdly and lastly my personal recommendation TRY THE BBQ sandwich the BBQ melts in your mouth, its slowly cooked overnight. I loved this place. They offer you a Great tasting Hamburger, along with a vegetarian entrees. It is so layed back that after we ate we went to the big back patio, witch lays on The Pigeon River, Watched the Rafting boats go by and fell a sleep. Good Food. Not processed. It is not a MC Donald's so it takes a little longer to get your food, but when you do it is Heavenly. Or, You can go to the BP Gas Station across the street and have some day old greasy chicken and pick the meat out with a tooth pic. read more

Very cute little place by the river! Food is very good. I had the veggie wrap--and was fresh and it had a lot of flavor! My husband had the pulled pork sandwich which was also very delicious! this is a dirty, backwoods, wanna-be, dump. just one waitress handling inside and outside tables. all those vegetarian options are non existent past the summer season. when ordering we were informed no tofu, no hummus, no pasta salad. it just didn't stop. got the veggie burger and fries; it was a black bean burger, my least favorite. fries looked terrible, rust colored, shrunken and dried. wondered what they were fried in. tasted OK but did get intestinal troubles later. daughter got the vegetarian chili and said it was OK but quite spicy and the cornbread dry. hubby said he had had better burgers. so i would not recommend this place to anyone. restroom was like an outhouse, shabby and dirty. little parking and yes it is next to the rafting place. read more

Stopped here to eat lunch on our way back to S.C. from Indiana. The people who worked here were as cool as cool could be! Friendly and helpful in many ways. Also bought a piece of art from a local artist who resides there. His art is displayed on the walls of The Cafe and his work is Amazing!! I felt like I was back with my Hippie Friends at Bethal NY. This place is a gem that we stumbled upon while taking a 30+ state drive in May 2015. It was the first time I'd ever had gumbo and it was terrific. We relaxed by the river and ate lunch and the whole visit was "just right". My husband and I really loved our little waitress - the one with the blue and pink hair. She was so friendly. My boyfriend & I were excited to try this place we had seen on the billboards. Easy on-off by the highway with gas stations very close. Greeted by hostess/waitress & encouraged us to sit out back by the patio as she was telling us there was only one burger patty (1/2 the menu) & they were out of barbecue (off season she said). She apparently handed my boyfriend the menus as we were walking out. Beautiful deck right by a river & surrounded by nature. Took a while for the waitress to come & ask what we wanted to eat before she asked about any drinks. We ended up ordering both right then. She seemed knowledgeable about the food & we both ended up ordering the paninis: Baja turkey & triple grilled cheese (after the out items, there was only a handful to choose from). Took a long time to get our food which was disappointing as there was only one other group of 4 there who already had their food. Being in nature, it wasn't awful to wait but we were both starving so we wanted our food pretty quick. Once she brought our food, she seemed to disappear- never checked how food was, never refilled our drinks, never brought a check or told us to just come inside to pay when we were ready. My boyfriend had suggested we just go inside to pay because he was convinced she forgot about us which was accurate when we walked in & she seemed to be surprised to see us. I ended up getting a maple bacon cheesecake which was decent- I liked it but my boyfriend didn't like the smoky bacon taste. I've yet to try the chocolate chip cookie but it feels soft which is a main plus in my book. read more

Guides recommended this place as a great place to eat. We were really hungry after rafting and only had our socks to put on(forgot the slip ons) so we decided to try this place. There were six of us. We ordered cheese sticks which were really greasy...not very good, chilli cheese fries....really nasty.Those were our appetizers. For the meals one ordered the tripled grill cheese and she forced herself to eat half of that. My husband order the philly cheese steak sandwhich and ended up being really sick. (food poisioning?) The rest of us had the bacon cheeseburgers with homemade fries. We ate as much as we could but it was horrible. I couldnt imagine anyone messing up a burger! We burped up that burger all night! Something with the seasoning was nasty. The fries are what you would expect with homemade french fries. My children said the view outside was nice but we ate inside. They were nice enough to let us come in with socks but $70.00 later we were disguisted. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Sorry........If you like pizza The Best Italian in Gatlinburg was great! Best I've had. Fuddruckers was good too as usual. read more
