Delicious french onion soup! Very laid back and comfortable atmosphere. I really enjoyed just being there. Our waitress was great, though service got a little slow toward the end. Really busy loud bar. I was surprised we were able to snag a table for four at five pm. Service was a bit lacking but it was to be expected when it was so packed. Maybe it'll get a bit better when they open up the patio. I had a very tomatoey caesar with sad garnish. Not a great 1st experience here but I'm sure we'll be back as someone mentioned earlier, it's the only pub in this neighbourhood. read more

Lunch on the patio with 3 people. We all enjoyed our meal choices - fish (cod) and chips was abundant (only needed one piece), Reuben and Caesar, salmon patty and salad. Came here twice while staying around the corner from Cook Street and every time they were jammed full. Smack dab in the middle of Cook St. Village, The Beagle offers a fun pub atmosphere with good food. A friend and I stopped into the Beagle for a bit after a nice walk down by Dallas. They have a lot of local brews on tap, so we started with some of those. Our server informed us that the menu had some new items. It's your standard pub fare, in the $10-15 range for burgers and sandwiches. I got a chipotle burrito which came with a hefty salad packed with peashoots, beets, and veg. My friend had a burger which he thoroughly enjoyed. The ambiance is warm in colours and loud in volume. This is a hotspot for people in the area, to watch the game or grab a bite with some buds. I don't understand the good reviews on here for food. I have eaten here twice and was disappointed twice. I moved to Victoria a year ago and I have come to realize that Victoria is not a city for good restaurants. At first I thought maybe because they didn't care about serving good food because the clientele consists mainly of tourists but even the places I have eaten that aren't in tourist areas are bad. I have lived in many cities in Canada and the US and I can honestly say this is the only city where I wouldn't recommend any restaurant if someone asked me and I am seriously not that picky of an eater. I just expect good food for a good price. I have given up on eating out here. So sad. read more

There is something about The Beagle that says "neighborhood pub", even if the food menu doesn't. Sure it has all the usual pub stuff, but if you read through carefully enough there are some unique gems on the menu. My date and I shared the Tapenada Hummus and the Candy Pecan and Apple salad with a couple of brews. For the most part it was adequate, with one exception...those pecans were to die for. If ever there was a reason to return it's for the pecans. Okay, there's the mass selection of draught and the outstanding service. It was packed in there and the staff didn't falter once. After all that praise, I do have one request...more candied pecans please. read more

This my local by virtue of living three blocks from here. Decent food, above average priced beer with a good local selection. No pitchers, pints only. Good place to watch sports. It is boisterous with sound. Either the game is on or music. No live shows. Favourite dishes: Salmon wrap, wings, oh, their salads are pretty good. They do a full on Yorkshire pudding prime rib supper on Sundays. It's very good. Staff are run off their feet but friendly. read more

This is one of my favourite places to have a beer and the food is great. We go there maybe 2 times a month and we live in Saanichton but it is well worth the drive. The atmosphere in there is second to none cant recommend it enough. I think they need to hire more staff as the service can be slow, we were there yesterday and I asked the waitress if they were short staffed and she said no. Good local beer selection (Phillips, VIB, Driftwood, Lighthouse, plus some Whistler and Stanley Park from the Mainland) and nice daily and monthly tap specials make this a good place to grab a beer in Victoria. I actually think The Beagle may have the best local beer selection in town, although I'm not sure I've tried all of the competition. I have not tried the food as it seems to be a bit overpriced for what it is (typical pub food), so this rating is based purely on the tap selection. One gripe I have (and this is more of a general thing, not specific to The Beagle) is that I'm always annoyed when I walk into a pub to have a drink and I have to sit at a table and wait for a server to come and take my order (when the bar is full which it seems to always be). I don't know why people are so obsessed with being served by other people in this city, I just want to order my beer from the bar and then sit down and drink it without being bothered. read more

Very good atmosphere and nice service! located by cook st village, there is a great mix of people who come into the place, just for a drink after work or to catch a game. I was there just for some nacho's and beer and I couldn't complain. I will def be going back another time with to show some more friends, try it out! read more

We discovered the Beagle last year when we visited and went twice. Good at time but this visit was great. Same terrific location and great service- we were greeted with smiles and seated with menus immediately. Drinks and food orders were taken quickly. Ordered French fries as a side as they were thought to be fresh cut- the server came back to clarify that they weren't so went with the chowder as a side- delish. My sandwich was fresh and creative. My wife's wrap and salad as well. The menu was new. The have a large selection of beers of which there always is a daily special. The server was exceptional. For a pub overall 5 stars. read more

I was visiting family who live nearby and wanted to check out a Premier league soccer match at 12pm on a monday. I mean it's Liverpool and Arsenal got to do it! I'd been to this pub before and liked it okay, probably a 3 star affair. They have a ton of TVs and strongbow on tap. can't beat that for a soccer match...I thought. I showed up 20 minutes before kickoff, there was only two other groups, one small and the other maybe six people in other parts of the large pub. I don't think they were there for the game but sports were on everywhere. The pre game of the soccer match was even playing on the biggest TV! Great! I ordered my strongbow and asked if they could turn on the sound for the game or at least subtitles. The waitress seemed hesitant and went to check if she could do that. I thought it was weird, it was super dead and it seemed to be a sports bar...All of the 6 or more TVs were playing sports. Anyways the waitress didn't really come back for a few minutes. So we went up and asked again. She then brought the bartender over and they explained that they couldn't turn on the sound or put on subtitles. What?! Why? "Oh we just don't do that here." Do you not know how to do it or something? "No, we just don't play the sounds". You don't play sounds at what's pretty clearly supposed to be a sports bar? One that's pretty much dead at 12pm on a Monday? "No, sorry." They weren't being mean about it but it was simultaneously perplexing AND vexing. But apparently they'd rather lose 5 customers than turn on the sound. I closed out my tab and went to yelp for a new place. I found a pub called the Sticky Wicket downtown that was happy to play the game with sound so I went there. It was fantastic (no strongbow on draft but they do have cans!) I'd say you can you can find much better pubs in Victoria (Oak Bay has Penny Farthing which is my fav) and Sports Bars (Sticky Wicket) so don't bother with this place. read more

We went there on a Sunday evening on a recommendation from friends who live nearby. It was busy and lively but noisy. We were not greeted but hey, it's a pub! We seated ourselves and waited. After an eternity I approached a harried overworked server who ignored me until I shrugged as if to say "can't you see me?" She assured me someone would come. "Yes she said there is table service " Again we waited. Nobody came. After twenty minutes in total we left. I think it is horribly understaffed. We are now across the street at Prima Strada. We were greeted the moment we walked in, offered menus, drinks, advice and questions answered. What a difference! read more

Ok so I gave the steak sandwich another try the last two visits. (Read my previous review) Now this is how a steak sandwich should be !! Both times a perfectly cooked and good sized steak on a yummy slice of garlic toast I ordered it with half fries and half ceasar salad , fries hot and crispy the ceasar salad great. I have lived in the neighbourhood since 1992, and the changes at the Beagle Pub have been phenomenal and most impressive -- especially the new outdoor patio with heaters. The menu has changed for the better with lots and lots of options and very reasonable prices. I will be going back more often in the months ahead. read more

If you're in the Cook Street area and looking for dinner after 9:00, this is a great (and seemingly your only) option. My partner and I ate here a handful of late nights recently, and everything we ordered was tasty. They have a good number of gluten free and vegetarian options, including a veggie burger that can be ordered with a gluten free bun and a quinoa salad. The one downside is that, if it's a night with a big sports game on the TV, it can get a bit crowded and loud. read more

I'm surprised to read comments saying that the food at the Beagle Pub is not good. The Beag is my neighbourhood pub-a 5 minute walk from my house. Even when I didn't live in the neighbourhood I would walk or cab there. I go there sometimes, not because it is my favourite pub, although it is, but because I thought the food was excellent. But I'm old now and, perhaps, my taste is faulty. But, even if the food is generally poor, the critics simply must agree that the Beag has the best wings in town. For disclosure I have no relationship with the Beagle Pub, it's owners or employees aside from living nearby and being a long time customer. For full disclosure I have been a long time acquaintance of a former owner. But I didn't like him very much. Until I found that my reasons for disliking him were misinformed. Turns out he's a great guy. But he is no longer an owner and even if he was that's no reason to say the food is good if it's not. Oh, and there was a server there who was a little bit weird. But she's gone now too. Accordingly I give the Beag 5 stars. Oh, make that four stars. I forgot about the time I fell off my bar stool and hit my head and they wouldn't let me finish my martini. I don't think they made me pay for it though. I could have sat on the floor where I couldn't fall. Bastards! Oh, one thing further, to those who will call me a hypocrite because they see me at the _____ Pub. I only go here because of the Beagle's one failing. The other pub has Lucky Lager on tap and the Beagle does not. (Lucky Lager. Official slogan: one helluva goddamn good beer). I asked at a store in Radium Hot Springs once if they had Lucky Lager. The woman gave me a level stare and said "from Vancouver Island, eh". Helpful hint: how to sound like you're from Vancouver (originally Vancouver's) Island if you're not. Go to a pub and ask if they have L.L on tap. When they ask if you're from Vancouver Island say "yeah, man, we almost died on the Malahat (or for greater realism 'the 'hat') getting to the airport (or, again, for greater realism, the ferry). read more
