They have Trivia sessions on Tuesdays which is fun, and we thoroughly enjoyed participating. The ambiance was nice! The food was good! I couldn't get enough of their beer battered fish & chips; the crispiness of the batter and the tenderness of the fish were a perfect combination. And those onion rings were a delightful treat as well! The shaft was maybe a little watery for me. It didn't blow me away! However, I must mention that the service could use some improvement. The pub was bustling, and it was evident that the staff was busy attending to many customers. Tonight my two friends and I waited in line for an hour before trivia. When we got to the front of the line, we were later told they were at capacity (100 people). We would have appreciated a heads up that we probably wouldn't get a seat before waiting in line for so long. read more

Maude Hunter's Pub is located near the University of Victoria and the main Camosun College campus. That means the clientele are mostly made up of post secondary school students. That is a good thing because the post secondary years are the most sociable until the harsh reality of post graduation kicks in and most people have their dreams destroyed with disappointment and the real truths of society. While they are at school, everyone can meet social friends and go to places like this pub to drink and earth vegetarian food plant based foods. The staff are fairly attentive of customer needs and the entertainment is good. The inside of the bar is kind of dark with the Tudor style to the decor. read more

Solid 4 stars. Service has been decent. I've had one terrible experience and several good ones. The bus boy is probably the hardest worker there. I've only tried the food a few times but it has been good. Drinks have also been good but I've really only ever had beer, wine, or canned beverages here. Music bingo is my favourite thing. Unfortunately the prizes have gotten terrible. They used to be items or a $10 voucher. Now it's just a ticket for a shot or single highball at the bar. Went with a friend to Maude's twice last week. Just wanted to get out and support a local business. Both times I saw the bartender wearing a mask but both times the server didn't. COVID trends are not going well right now and I would like to keep supporting local businesses to keep them afloat. But not when they can't show the simple courtesy of having staff wear masks when they move among customers. If you can't show you care about us then why should we care about you. Went with an Entertainment Book coupon and this is a case where it didn't work out well for the business, won't even be using the second coupon. Food is cheap (saving grace) but tasteless and bad. Atmosphere is lackluster if I want to be kind. The service was solid which earned it a second star. My advice? Travel a bit further and find some good food --- this is Victoria after all. read more

Good neighbourhood pub. Been here a bunch of times, but the most recent was for St. Patrick's Day. Great atmosphere, but the service was okay. Maybe it was just that particular night because they're so busy, but the pub is usually pretty busy anyways. We ordered chicken wings, nachos and some chicken strips. The wings were okay. The nachos were good - how can you go wrong with nachos? The best thing? The chicken strips - SO amazing. Breaded well and tender. The fries were mediocre. Good place if you like busy pubs, but not so busy that you need to yell at one another. Great to watch a hockey game too. read more

Had some amazing soup, some really decent poutine, as well as unremarkable quesadillas and downright awful chicken wings. (I think they found tiny mutant chickens with no meat on them to speak of to make these. And then dried them out. However, I must disclose that I lived in Buffalo, home of too many good wings in every direction, and I may have unusually high standards.) Standard pub atmosphere with efficient service. An old school pub, one of the first in Victoria still delivers . . . . Yes, I admit I've been coming here since it first opened in the 80s when you had to self serve. The atmosphere and vibe has always been comfortable; the food has had its ups and downs . . . The night with three friends the food was fine, everyone was happy with their dinner selection. I had the entree size house salad with honey miso dressing ($10.95), with added prawns ($5.95). I think they gave me 10 prawns, so good value and nicely grilled with a crisp, fresh texture. Ordering salad at a pub is iffy, but shows where they are at in the kitchen. This salad was fresh, lots of leafy varieties and pumpkin seeds crunch on the plate. Well done! I finished it and was happy. The server right off that they were short one and it was a busy Friday night. Turns out, we didn't experience any time lags or unusual waits. It looked like the bartender was out and about helping serve drinks to tables. Good service. The only disappointment was they had no Island-local cider on tap, nor Growers BC cider (my fav) in the bottle. I had to drink cider I wouldn't normally have ordered otherwise. read more

Went there for Thanksgiving turkey dinner. There were five of us, and three of us were given dinners that weren't even lukewarm. We returned them and it took ages for them to bring a hot meal. It was rolled turkey, and the gravy tasted like something out of a can. The sparse vegetables on the plate were over cooked. The only thing good about it was the mashed potatoes, they were tasty. However, overall the meal was terrible. Only positive thing was the server. She was attentive and did her best. She also took 10 percent off all of our meals without us asking, because of us getting dinners that were cold. We left a tip for her as the terrible food was not her fault. I live in the area and have been here for lunch. Although the food isn't excellent, for the most part it's been quite decent until tonight. But that was a really bad turkey dinner tonight. read more

British style pub, loads of character here (also a nice way of saying could use some renovations haha, but it's a different change of atmosphere from the Downtown pubs for sure!) Reminds me more of a restaurant than a pub in part due to how you can see the chefs at work in the kitchen. Pretty unique place, recommend for those nights where you want some drinks in a more low-key, less hectic place outside of the DT area. Cheap drinks too! I ordered a double vodka soda lime since their special of the night were double highballs for $5.50 (which I specially requested they split into two drinks to promote some responsible drinking for myself lol). Receipt ended up being $6.52 or $7.50 with the tax so I don't really understand the deal, but super cheap night where a few good hours were had! Short but brief, we all know Maude's went downhill a long time ago, so I wouldn't even order the food, much less comment on it, but a much younger friend of mine dragged me in on Monday night for Music Bingo, whatever. I order a few pints, then felt like something a bit harder, Double JD neat, get it and without paying much attention I slam it back, immediately I realize it was a single, tell the waitress the next round and she comes back and gives me a triple and says Bartender was busy and made a mistake and made up for it on this round. Fair enough, everyone makes a mistake. Back again tonight order double JD neat and get a single, same excuse. Seems a bit fishy to me, Ripping off the college kids that don't know any better is pathetic, but be smart enough not to rip off the pro's who know better. And looking at some of the reviews like "Been Here a Bunch" Been here since the late 80's, and yeah it has gone way down hill. read more

I've been here many times over the years. It's not close to where I live so it's always a bit of a drive to get there and there are plenty of pubs closer. Really disappointed with the food today. My friend had the halibut and chips and I had the cod (substituted a salad for the fries). Her piece of halibut was a really good sized piece of fish. I noticed similar portions for others too. Mine was a 3"x3"square of cod that was burnt. I don't know why mine was less than half the size of the others but maybe cause it's cod?! I'm usually of the opinion that cooks will spit on your food if you complain so I didn't say anything. Service was slow too but it seemed fairly busy and I only saw 2 waitresses. read more

I will give 1 star because I am required to do so but if it were up to me no stars would be given due to the equal amount of fux that were given to me at this establishment. I came into the dimly lit "old style pub" that immediately offers you a giant set of stairs to climb up at the top of which there is little to no reward. I was tired from a long day of working so decided to order some food to go. I placed my order at the bar assuming that I might get some kind of decent treatment and or decent food I regrettably tipped them %20. I took a seat near the bar so that the bartender could see me and tell me when my food was ready. I waited literally 45 mis without ever once being acknowledged by any server and believe me i could have used a drink. So when I finally just went ahead and asked the bartender when my food might be ready he looks at me as if he's never seen me before then say's "OH RIGHT" and goes over and picks my food up from the kitchen where it had been sitting wrapped up and ready to go for the past 25 mins and I know this because the bread on my sandwich was so soggy from the steam trapped inside the double wrapped plastic baggy that they had so cleverly packaged it in that it looked as though it had been left out in the rain for the last 20 mins. I had a look around the place a few times to see that it was not busy at all. WTF !!?? I'd say it was the worst service I've ever had but in my opinion I didn't receive any service whatsoever. I literally just paid for sh*t food that I couldn't even eat. I would have went back to complain but I couldn't even bring myself to hike back up those GD stairs to the dismal atmosphere they have going on up there and explain to some people who clearly don't give a sh*t why their food and service is terrible. I would rather post on here to you so that maybe you might not make the same mistake I did. Victoria most certainly has more to offer than this place. read more
