Met a friend here for dinner yesterday because I was craving dirty rice and I saw online that this place had dirty rice on their menu. So will begin there. The dirty rice was too wet and mushy and not at all what I was expecting. I did not enjoy it. The gumbo was everything. I wished I had only ordered that because the collard greens were too sweet and tasted like straight up sugar and my catfish was seasoned nicely but it was fried too hard which made it difficult to chew. The homemade lemonade was bitter so I requested liquid sugar and that made it sweet. I ordered a smothered chicken dinner with mashed potatoes and gravy along with collard greens to go for my husband. He thoroughly enjoyed it but was disappointed the meal didn't come with cornbread. The server was very nice and accommodating. I would give this place another try because I like the vibe. read more

We went for dinner after visiting the Bronx Botanical Gardens. We were served by the owner who was a really nice guy. We started with the appetizer special, iguana sausage and the soup special, chorizo sausage and lentil soup. Both were excellent. We shared the alligator casserole which was really good and let us leave room for dessert, the in house made key lime pie, which is now a menu staple. Highly recommend the key lime margaritas. We had a great experience and meal this past Saturday at the Bayou. We were greeted and seated right away and the place had a great Saturday night vibe going on. Most of the tables were full and the bar area had plenty of patrons. We ordered some apps. Gumbo and Cajun wontons. Main entrees included jambalaya blackened shrimp and blackened chicken sandwich. Everything was delicious and the portions were very generous. It had been a while since we had visited. We will definitely add The Bayou to our go to list again. read more

I've been coming here off and on for 30 years, and I've never had a bad meal. Came here tonight for the Mardi Gras party. despite the full house, everything was delicious! We had the fabulous popcorn shrimp, Fried chicken, and blackened catfish. Very large portions -- come here hungry! Also the house salad with their amazing basil dressing. Ask to buy a bottle to take home! They gave us some king cake, but we were so stuffed we took it home. They have great cocktails, including the NOLA original, the Hurricane! Also a good selection of beers including some Abita beers! There's music here some nights, which is always fun. Quirky interesting decor. I love this place. read more

This is the second Creole restaurant I visit in NY, and the flavors of the food are undeniable. There's something about Creole food that makes you feel at home. It's packed with seasonings and very dense. It's food you can take home with you to enjoy it more. I really loved the gumbo, the hush puppies, and the shrimp etoufee. read more

I went there with my wife. The bar had patrons but the dining area was empty. We sat there for about ten minutes and nobody came to serve us. I got up and went to the kitchen to ask if the kitchen was open & if they were serving food? Which they replied yes and we waited for another five minutes still no one came to serve us. At this point a couple came in and sat down as well. I decided that 15 minutes in an empty dining room was enough. So we left. I'm not sure what the problem was and the fact that no one came out to tell us the waiter staff was running late, no show or quit was the reason. Overall the food was good. The macaroni and cheese could have used a bit more flavor to it. I'm not sure if it was the cheese that was bland or lack of seasoning. I also got the frog legs, which is always a favorite for me. And the cornbread was also great. We went after trick or treating, that being said... this mama needed a drink lol. I came pre Covid and had such a wonderful time I wanted to return ; food was different and fun. Tonight was lackluster it was quick to get seated slow to even get a drink the place wasn't packed yes there were some tables but it wasn't crazy. The staff wasn't rude and nice enough so I left a star on for that . The pull boys were good; oysters seamed fresh the crawfish had to be frozen and broth was lacking in flavor; the coleslaw needed mayo and more condiments. Parking is on street metered until 9 . Bathrooms are downstairs over all just an ok time we need a bit more to keep patronizing . read more

It's been a while since I've been to the Bayou and I must say it was quite lovely to pop in there this afternoon for an early dinner as you can see we were quite hungry and we ordered quite a bit and we took home quite a bit as well- however everything was delicious. Service was terrific - the food was delicious and made to order- the drinks were good, my friend loved the gator which is the reason why we went to the restaurant. I used to frequent this establishment back in the day. It was an absolute favorite when I lived in the Bronx and some of my best friends were nearby in Mt. Vernon. At a recent reunion... the experience did not live up to the memory. Nothing terrible at all food-wise, but nothing great either. Well, the stuffed jalapeño appetizer was pretty disappointing--not poppers at all, just actual jalapeños stuffed with cheese--very odd. I got a fried catfish po boy which was fine but kind of bland, while my girlfriend doubled down on the jalapeño, getting Mac and cheese with jalapeño added. It was also ok but very greasy. Our friend got jambalaya that he had to douse in hot sauce for the desired effect. Service was--and I know this sounds like a line, but---literally someone who must have been like 12 or 13. Son of the owner? I dunno. It was weird and so painfully slow--we were here virtually 2.5 hours--but we didn't want to complain because--you know--then you're being mean to a kid! I remember loving this place so back on the day. It was always packed, with good booze and brews and live music and games on in the background. I had frogs legs that would have made Doc Hopper proud. I also had the catfish, which was excellent - blackened, spicy, and a generous helping of two fillets. I tasted the Buffalo cauliflower and it was really good, and I'm a wing guy. It is not a substitute for wings, so don't expect that. It's just a good app. The chicken fajitas had a Cajun bite and the chicken was cut into small morsels. The collard greens, beans, cole slaw, and sweet potato chips all were great. I placed an order for delivery. I was feeling for some gumbo and this place seemed to have a lot of good reviews. I had gumbo for the first time last year somewhere in Miami and it was amazing so I was craving It hard. I was a very disappointed. It was like soupy shredded meat and that's it. I taste lil tiny chunks of sausage but that's it. I didn't like that. For some reason I get the feeling that it's canned soup or something, I don't know it's something about it's taste. It just wasn't authentic gumbo ya know. I also ordered Cajun popcorn shrimp and they were not crunchy AT ALL (extremely soggy actually) nor were they Cajun or even seasoned at all. I'll give them another try in the future but I'm in no rush to do so Update: I posted that review last night after eating. Maybe an hour after, my stomach just felt messed up (and please forgive me because this is a bit of TMI) but I had explosive diarrhea ALL night. I literally was getting up every hour to go to the bathroom and I was able to finally get sleep at 3 am. So yeah. Won't be returning to give them another try. So.....I went tonight and things were different. As a result, I changed my review. Here we go: "Do you know how much wings cost these days"? -By the Manager on Duty on August 27th at 7:15pm. So, I wanted to order a split sauced wings to go. And the waitress said, "We don't do that here. You have to order separately." I asked to speak with the manager and was greeted by such a polite, mask wearing man with manners. I asked if I could order 8 Signature Voo Doo and 8 Bayou Buffalo for the 16 wings. He said, unfortunately no. You must order separately. Because of both the preparation of wings and the cost. Followed by the aforementioned quote. In the end, I wound up ordering 16 Bayou Buffalo and 16 Signature voo doo. The price was never the issue. I wanted a courtesy extended or an additional price applied since I'm a loyal customer. Instead, I received a non-budging Manager who wanted to ensure his "his chicken wings were fully covered and his staff was supported in their decision to not make an exception". The absolute worst POBOY sandwich I have ever ate. It was a philly cheesesteak, no cheese. Salty to the point of hard to eat and bitter from the salt. In all my almost 30 years of living in Mount Vernon, I have never been to this spot so tonight my friend was in the mood for some gumbo and I decided to join her. When we got to the restaurant it wasn't that crowded so the hostess told us we can sit wherever we want. we chose a table in the corner but then we were told that the band is going to set up in a few minutes so we had to pick another seat. When I heard band my ears perked up. I ordered the Key lime margarita and an order of hush puppies as an appetizer. The hush puppies were freshly made so they were scorching hot when they came to the table. We asked for some maple syrup and honey to go with them and that made them that much better. For my main I got an order of Voodoo wings with an order of mac and cheese. The wings were really well seasoned and came to the table piping hot so did the mac and cheese. In all the food was pretty good but what made the night really good was the house band. The band was really good and after the band played other musicians in the room were allowed to get up and have a shot at playing. In all the experience was really fun and i would definitely come back here. I wish I actually came here sooner than I did but now I will be going more often for sure. read more

We came in here for trivia night on Sunday (yeah Chester St gang time). I ordered up voodoo wings and a catfish poboy. My first suggestion is bring your glasses or a flashlight! The dining area is very dark. I'm not complaining, the joint has plenty of character, completed by a jumbo Gulf sign. I greatly enjoyed the ambience. The voodoo wings were crispy and yet the meat still fell off the bone. I don't know what kind of culinary magic was worked here, but the charcoal smokiness was heavenly. I took a stab at going for authentic and I ordered a catfish Poboy. I asked for bacon. The sandwich was generously portion and the fish was very well seasoned. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the sweet potato fries were!! The coleslaw was good, but I think it could have used a little more mayo. Trivia night was a lot of fun. Fried food is pretty on point. Mac n cheese was filled with clarified butter(like dripping). I was shocked the small bowl was $8. Cornbread was hefty yet fresh so another plus point. On the whole, it's mehhh for investment. I guess they fry things well which is why it's popular. Being a vegetarian is a bad idea here. For the price the portions were small. In a place catered towards southern food, why can't it have solid portions for vegetarians? I also thought the cooking was a bit slow, but since somethings were fresh I didn't mind.
