Our first visit here and the food was marvelous. We had the whole place to ourselves and the cucumber salad was refreshing and really complimented our main courses. The Jagerschnitzel was just like what I remember from visiting various places in Germany. To top it off, the coffee and black forest cake perfect. We are looking forwarding to visiting again.

Empty at dinner. A red flag we ignored.

NASTY NASTY NASTY: The WORST German food I've ever had in my 33 years on this planet. We should have known something was wrong when at 530pm there was no one seated for dinner but the parking lot was packed for the bar potion of the restaurant. Hint: no one at the bar was eating. We ordered the Jaret schnitzel for two. We chewed our food in silence trying to comprehend how food could be this bad. It was incredibly greasy with no flavor and definitely not a larger enough portion for two adults. I ordered a potato dumpling for my side. The texture was dry and confusing. The poor potato tasted like cardboard. Needless to say we left 80% of our food on that plate. We honestly feel like we were bamboozled. Our waitress didn't even ask if we wanted boxes because she knew that food was NASTY. She KNEW.

I love German food so I jumped at the opportunity to check this place out. To start, the service was impeccable! I can't recall the name of our waitress, but she was very friendly, knowledgeable about every item across various menus (dinner, bar, and beverages), and she was very patient given that 2 in my party were annoyingly indecisive and asked a ton of questions. I ordered the house Pinot Grigio, which was absolutely delicious much to my delight. It was light, fruity, and a little sweet, but not overly so. It was also happy hour at the time so I got a nice discount! For my meal, I went with the chicken schnitzel and added the mushroom sauce. My sides were spatzle and the veggie of the day, sautéed green beans. The spatzle was bland, but I just dipped it in the AMAZING mushroom sauce. Seriously, I want to pour that sauce on my whole life! It was so good. I did pour it over the schnitzel, which was good on its own, but better with the sauce. And the green beans were tasty, I inhaled those too. Definitely going back here, I have plans to conquer the rest of that menu!

After spending many a summer nights at Blobs Park and the subsequent closure, I felt the area was missing out on a place to celebrate, enjoy, and introduce German culture in the Baltimore/DC corridor. I was skeptical that the old Gunnings location could provide that experience and although there's no replacing Blobs, the food and beer selection take you to that place of Gemütlichkeit for a brief moment. My only criticism would be that they need to advertise and step up the decor just a little to either provide a bierhall or hunting lodge experience. Well done though with superb German offerings like Sauerbraten and sausages with red cabbage, sauerkraut, and potato salad. Prost!!

The food exceeded my expectations. If you grew up eating German food this definitely is worth the visit. The coleslaw was creamy and flavorful. The red potatoes was reminiscent of my grandmother's. The schnitzel was heaven. The only drawback was the long wait for drinks. An easy fix would likely just leave a pitcher of water on the table. Overall this has been one of the most enjoyable dinners with my family.

You don't know what you're getting into with a German restaurant in a suburban strip center. Looking for something unique on our drive back to BWI airport led us to The Bavarian Brauhaus. Large wooden entry doors made our voyage to the other side seem authentic, as did the wooden décor, beer signs and Christmas decorations. The server asked if we would like to eat in the dining room or bar area. We chose the dining room and were seated near a large mural of a female figure holding a tablet. A quick search for the word depicted revealed it was from a German social organization celebrating friendship and art. We ordered beer and our server suggested a pretzel as an appetizer. That sounded great and tasted even better. It was served with four different dipping mustards. The vegetarian options were spätzle noodles in various creams and cheeses. It was late and I didn't want anything that heavy so I ordered from the appetizer menu: potato pancakes with apple sauce with a side of red cabbage. Our table also had chicken schnitzel and one of the largest pork chops I had ever seen. There were minor complaints from someone in our party who doesn't like German food in general, but over-all there wasn't much to argue with. While it isn't cheap, the portions are large and you certainly feel you are paying for quality. The Bavarian Brauhaus was an excellent way to close out our day.

With it being mid-week we didn't think we would need reservations but the bartender that seated us quickly let us know since we didn't have a reservation we'd have to sit at a bar high-top. It wasn't said in an inviting way and the vibe from this particular employee/manager/owner (??) unfortunately permeated the entire evening. Because we were seated in the bar area, which was entirely fine with us, we overheard frequent swearing in general and what should have been more private convos between her and various wait staff as they came to retrieve their drinks for their tables. We advised the waitress it was my friend's first time eating German food and my friend asked several questions just to seek clarification. The waitress didn't engage with any enthusiasm, so I proceeded to guide my friend at that point. The food was a solid 3, warm and decent, but nothing special and not much seemed to be made in house based entirely on the appearance and taste. Was the experience awful? No. Would I return? Also no. It was adequate for two folks that were hungry, but it was not the experience we had envisioned or hoped for.

Fun place, good atmosphere (modern German w/o being douchy or fake)…read more Had maybe the best schnitzel I've ever had - it was crunchy and tender, but also had great flavor (rare) and was almost "light" - I say almost bc nothing deepn fried is trully light but this ate that way. Our assigned server only came to our table twice--once to take our order and once to drop off the check. It was another staff member who actually provided a majority of the service - she brought us warm bread, delivered our food, and refilled our drinks multiple times. When it came time to pay, I paid in cash using a larger bill. The server assumed I was giving a large tip and was about to walk away with no intention of giving me my change. I made no comment of "keep the change" I then had to awkwardly ask for my change back so I could leave a tip separately. He proceeded to ask how much change I wanted, putting me on the spot and feeling pressured to leave a large tip (mind you, I was going to already leave a tip). Because of this, I ended up leaving a much larger tip (over 50%) than I had intended, especially considering the level of service he provided us. I understand that I could have been more firm about asking for all my change back, but guests should never feel pressured or uncomfortable when paying. Overall, the service experience with our waiter overshadowed what could have been an otherwise enjoyable visit.
