This is a good bistro style cafe / restaurant that is elevated by the great view. My friend and I had a very pleasant lunch. Came here at 12pm so the place wasn't crowded. Were able to chat without the noise which crept up as the afternoon progresses with the rise of number of patrons. I had the duck confit and her, mussels. Both were on point. This is an elegant modern restaurant with a spectacular view of the ocean. If you're looking for a casual spot this is not the place. In simple terms it's pretty fancy. They only have a pre-fixe menu so it's pretty pricey. We had the 3 course set that was $120 per person. If you have a large party I recommend making reservations. Oysters- The oysters were a great choice. They were fresh and tasty. Seared deep sea scallops- This dish came out looking quite fancy schmancy with some kind of foamy mouse on top. The presentation was spot on. The nori rolls I didn't care for, but the scallops were seared perfectly. Tuna tartare- this dish was good but didn't really wow me compared to some of the other food. Seared ocean trout- Skin was crispy and was seared really well. To be honest it didn't leave a lasting impression because I can't quite remember the taste of the trout. If reviews were only about location, Bathers would be 5 stars as its gorgeously situated across from Balmoral Beach. Unfortunately for them they also require reviews on food and service and thats when I get let down. The food is good but it's not great and the same can be said of the service. Although its a beautiful place to get a meal you'll probably spend most of the night talking about the view then the food you're eating. $35 dollars for appetizers and $48 for mains and let me tell you - it's not worth the price... If you like the view so much maybe grab takeaways from somewhere up the road and enjoy it on the beach....you'll probably end up having a better time (and food) read more

I was at the cafe for breakfast, a very popular weekend treat for lower north-shore Sydneysiders. We had a sunny table right by the window, looking out at people walking their dogs up and down the beach esplanade. We arrived about 10am and had to wait 5 min for a table for two. I ordered Serge's oven baked beans with smoked ham hock and sourdough, for $20. It defeated me; I could not finish it all. The beans were incredible, rich and flavourful. The chunks of smoked ham were very substantial. It was also chock full of sweet roasted onions. Top spot for a special brunch once in a while. read more

Balmoral Beach is so nice it would probably make an old wooden shack look like an old hipster fish and chips shop. My point is that the Bathers Pavilion is a nice but not extraordinary watch in the world's most impressive feat of packaging. I'm guessing you got the gist of where I'm heading so I'll stop there. The venue itself is nice, a mix of wood and stone with a colourful decoration and a terrific view. Some potential is wasted in my view by the classic style in which the place was decorated, it could be so much more! Now before you get too far and stop reading, I recommend it: Balmoral Beach, sun, a good looking crowd and good food - some of it very good such as the blood sausage. The negativity at the start probably comes from the fact that I don't like opportunities not living out to their full potential but it remains one of the nicest setup for a brunch in that area and you should definitely go! read more

This is such a lovely spot for breakfast.Very pretty outlook over the ocean, with a relaxed vibe. Interesting and varied menu. They make their own granola, and it's delicious, served with fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. My Sister had the polenta porridge. She said she was not a big fan of it, but I didn't taste it, so can't really comment. It certainly looked nice enough. The juices are good, they serve Champagne by the glass or bottle, and make a wicked Virgin Mary. Thoroughly recommend it. read more

The Kiosk sells a good selection of 'luxury' cold drinks including the delicious San Pellegrino range. Hot Chocolate from here is particularly decadent and comes with a take-away marshmallow. The Coffee lacks a little for my tastes. It's not bad, just not good. In fact I'm surprised it isn't better given the great offerings from the Café and Restaurant. They sell a range of beautifully presented: wraps, sandwiches and salads. The Moroccan Chicken wrap is massive with a lovely zingy sauce. Gelato from here is cute as a button in sealed tubs and unlike the liquid version, the Coffee is the one to try. A variety of Bathers Pavilion beach supplies complete the high-end offering here. It's 11am on a sunny Sunday morning and I'm wending my way down Awaba Street, dreading what I'll soon see before me. Yup, as predicted, glistening Balmoral Beach is positively teeming with people and cars are circling in a desperate dance for a park. Why in gods name am I trying to meet up for brunch with my girls HERE? On a Sunday? Especially when the Bathers Pavilion Cafe doesn't take bookings. Madness! I'll admit to cursing my friend who organised it, when lo and behold I get a park! Ok it's on the waterfront and I'll pay $10 for the privilege, but I'm not going to look this gift horse in the mouth. Then, you could have struck me dead when I amble into the beautiful surrounds of Bathers Pavilion only to be told, "Table for 6? No problem, I can seat you right away." No. Way. I couldn't believe my luck. My friends didn't have the same fortune, mind - it was a long trek down the hill for them, but once we were all together it was time to gossip and to EAT. I'm a little bit obsessed with the blueberry pancakes here. Oh sod it, I'm obsessed with the entire breakfast menu. Every item is the height of delectability, and all is served by staff who are as sunny as their glorious surrounds. Just take a look at the photos from our brunch. Mouthwatering doesn't even begin to describe it, right? Look, it's by no means the cheapest brunch spot around, but when you factor in the quality of the food and your drop dead gorgeous view, it's absolutely worth it. After two dinner visits in the last couple of weeks, I can say that: 1. the food will be acceptable, slightly pricy but as expected for the area 2. service will cause me to raise an internal eyebrow as the mostly foreign staff a. doesn't know what they are selling and doesn't much care b. can treat the patrons somewhat roughly compared to the norm in Sydney, whether because they can't be bothered or because I always go there wearing more casual wear after a trek and clash with the mostly shirt and slacks-wearing clientele. Since there aren't that many options in Balmoral without trekking back up the hill or waiting for the free shuttle bus, and since after something like 7 attempts I've yet to try Public Dining Room (it's wedding season...), it is still my default option when on the Beach. The location is great as is every location on Balmoral Beach. The area itself is just stunning. It's not *that* far from CBD when there is no traffic. Would I go there specifically, probably not, but it's an acceptable way to end a day that somehow finished in the area. Shrug off the service and just enjoy the food and location. Life isn't always perfect, and to be fair, for a place that has a guaranteed audience the food is pretty good. read more

If so, then ignore this review - if all you care about is the atmosphere then this is a 5 out of 5 place, and you should be running here as if you are in a zombie movie, and you are trying to outrun your more weightier friend. However, if you are like me and all you care about on a Saturday morning is great coffee and a breakfast that makes you grateful that you did not sleep in, then this place is not for you - at best I would define the food here as average. With all the reviewers before me I was expecting a really good food experience. When I first walked in here and saw the view - I was thinking to myself, "wow, this place has everything!" But no, it doesn't. Great view, average food. The food here is what you would expect for any cafe, however, you are going to be paying a lot more for it. Still - the view! The coffee is brewed from Grounds beans. And it is not a bad cup, but honestly nothing to get overly excited about. Now, this is the only cafe that I have been to in Balmoral, so I'm not sure if this is the best cup or not? But from the cafes on other near-by beaches I was slightly disappointed. When I brought this up to the company I was with, I was reminded of the view. So I know that everyone else who has reviewed this place is going to kill me - but other than the view, I honestly think that there is no reason to come here. Location, location, location. What a view! Lovely little cafe right on the beach~ perfect for lunch. We were greeted and seated by Serge. Im not sure what his position is, but he was very kind and chatted with us for a good bit before we ordered. Such a beautiful day and wonderful light and the breezes coming through the windows all made for a great ambiance for certain. My friend ordered a pizza which looked good and she seemed to like and I ordered the pasta bolganese and a bloody mary~ both very good and quite filling. I wish I could have looked at the dessert menu but I was totally full. I could have stayed there all day :) I hope to return. read more

I have been to Bathers a few times on both sides, cafe and fine dining, and sad to say I've had a very uneven experience, with our recent lunch on the fine dining side a big disappointment. Six of us went for a significant birthday lunch on a weekend, and things looked good with a nice window table. It was however apparent from early on that our waiter really didn't want to be at work today, as he was disinterested and slow. It e as if the restaurant was full, perhaps we had the winter team on, I don't know, but considering this was a formerly hatted restaurant it was a huge let down. Despite clearly stating who ordered what and who was drinking what our waitstaff repeatedly got it wrong, delivering wrong plates and wrong drinks practically every time. The food was largely ok, my pork cheek entree to die for, and other diners likewise happy with appetisers, also with house made bread and butter. Most of us had a blue eyes trevella with miso glaze for our main that although beautiful to look at was very bland. Pretty sad when the chips you ordered for a side were the highlight. After waiting an eternity for deserts lo and behold the birthday wishes were on the wrong plate. Seriously. One of our table quietly bollocked the maître de and eventually a bill was presented with water and coffees deducted as recompense. Woo hoo, hanging it out there. Something less than a 1% discount. Way to go. Might give it another crack. Or not. So it's a 4 for food and a 2 for service. read more

The food was fresh and delicious- we each had oysters as an entree and the Barramundi for a main. Highly recommend both. However, the service left a lot to be desired. We went on a slower evening and had to remind our waitress several times for luxuries like...cutlery...while our food went cold. Sunday morning the sea is glistening, the water crazy kayak, swimmers do laps, people jog and families swim. And then there it is a group surface in the glistening mass as fins break water and then arc back into sea. A pod of dolphins head towards Manly. This is the view we have before us at Bathers Pavilion Cafe. Our little family have been for their dip as we dry off and come into Bathers for breakfast. Carl who is the floor manager is one of the hospitable people we have ever been in the company of. He runs to us as we roll the pram in to the waiting area, takes it from us and notifies that there is the perfect table for us being prepared. And perfect it is. Saltwater makes one famished so I order the baked polenta with dates, poached pear and cinnamon yoghurt and my husband decides to share a croissant with our daughter (though I think his intentions were to consume my breakfast) . While we wait for our food we watch Carl attend to tables and new guests, he certainly treats each person and group like angels have entered into Bathers and he wants to bring them their best. We love the relaxed and elegant atmosphere of Bathers, the sun filled room and colourful paintings - so much so it's a monthly visit for us. The polenta arrives and I scoop my spoon into a corner of the Polenta. Oh so divine - smooth, creamy and dense. The dates are slightly stewed and the pears are firm, perfect combination. Of course a fork comes from my right hand side from the opposite side of the table and sinks into my breakfast. My daughter with her babycino moustache looks eagerly at me to share as I feed her Polenta she bangs her highchair for more. After all that Im not sure how much I had but I know one thing for sure I'm returning back for breakfast without these two. After breakfast we go to the upstairs gallery to enjoy the Indigo collection and enjoy the view from the Terrace. Bather's is a Sydney institution that is unrivalled in location, experience, service and food. read more

Good and friendly service. Superb location. Awesome beach views. Those are the good things. What I find wanting, is the food which is just middle-of-the-road, but not really worth the $ it's charged for. Parking is a pain (and you pretty have to get there by car). I would not have wanted a bowl of (over-cheesed) mussels for $33+, or a small cheese-only pizza for $24, or a glass of average wine that is only 1/3 filled (as if it's whiskey). And our growing kids all left feeling hungry since potion size is small. Or, you could easily have packed a picnic basket with far better food, and enjoy that same views and beach location, all for free. Maybe I don't feel too charitable today, but I almost feel like getting ripped off with that kind of menu prices for that kind of food. read more

I was really excited to find this place - the location is great right on the beach but as soon as we sat down it all went down hill. It started with a dirty table that when it was wiped wasn't really cleaned rather rubbed in and smeared all over by the staff member with a zero care attitude. I sat with 2 of my friends and asked what veg options were available other than the obvious leafy salad. I was happy to work with what was on the menu asking if the cheese or meat be removed from some of the main dishes. No no no. The waiter was adamant nothing could be changed it was all pre-prepared. It was 12.05 they close their breakfast menu at 12pm however thought perhaps they could whip up an avocado toast option. No no no. We are past 12pm and breakfast is OVER. I asked what can I have then, since nothing can be altered and they couldn't accommodate my dietary needs, the waiter just looked at me and said eat a bread roll. This is really poor service as far as I'm concerned, as a vegan I understand that I'm not going to be able to eat a huge portion of what's on a menu, however it shouldn't be so hard for the chef to offer some alternative. These guys are so busy that they have forgotten the value of good service. The menu is expensive and their attitude is more about eat what is on the menu, do not alter it and then leave. No chef should disregard other peoples food requirements - it is unprofessional and presumptive to assume a fixed menu is good enough. It is a very rigid way of doing business. They clearly just ride on their location because this sort of cafe in a different location would not cut it. The decor is pretty old and felt grubby. The view is terrific! We left this place and was thrilled we did because the cafe at the opposite end of the bay was incredibly better. read more

Looking at the Bathers' Pavilion Café from the outside recalls a certain class and elegance that is missing from most beachfront restaurants around Sydney. This place looks like a castle on the beach. In addition to housing a café, The Bathers' Pavilion Café is a venue for functions and events. When I was there, a string quartet was serenading an event on the second floor terrace. Located right on the beach promenade, this stately establishment is actually laid-back with cozy booths and chairs. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as high tea. I went for lunch. As I perused the menu, I saw Mediterranean influences and a definite emphasis on seafood. In fact, I had the seafood risotto and it was excellent. I was also satisfied by the service. But in my opinion, the real draw of this restaurant is the view, which looks directly on Balmoral Beach and out to Watson's Bay. The top floor is perfect for hosting an event. Very disappointed. Service not very good. Mainly Indian staff not knowledgeable. Wine 95 dollars. After first ordering glass of this wine suddenly ordering per glass the same wine not possible. Strange. Staff not properly dressed. Mix of uniform colors. French girl looked closest what you expect of this expensive joint. Food not bad. Great location. Guess that's what you pay for. read more

We visit every fortnight or so and have never been disappointed... until this visit! Mains were good, had the lunch special shared the ragu and then the chicken. Happy camper! Then for dessert, the fig creme brûlée and unfortunately the fig was burnt and spoilt the entire meal. I was happy to pay and leave, however the waiter asked for my thoughts on the meal and I responded "So-so". She then wanted more info and I advised her that the fig was burnt, leaving a bad taste in my mouth and had spoilt our meal. She said "Too bad, I will advise the Chef, goodbye". As far as Sydney Harbour locations go, they don't get much better then Bathers at Balmoral. This beach side cafe has views from most tables of Middle Harbour, Manly & the Heads. The menu has a good range of choices albeit at prices reflecting the cafe's location. read more

I love heading to Bathers for breakfast on a special occasion... Having only ever had breakfast here, I can't comment on the $$ or quality of the rest of the menu. However the breakfast menu is amazing... I haven't tried all of it yet, but what I have tried, has all been amazing (especially the blueberry pancakes). We often head down fairly early, so haven't had to wait long for a table, but be aware that it is a popular place, and that means it can get busy, so sometimes you might need to be prepared to wait for a table.... I can't really think of a better place to wait than overlooking the gorgeous beach. Once you are in & seated, the most difficult part will be choosing what to eat!! read more

Set on the sandline in a curve of Hunters Bay, the venue is graced with phenomenal vistas of crystal clear water lapping against pale yellow sand. Bather was an all-time favourite of my grandma and I's but we have started to notice that the seafood risotto was starting to get a little bit bland and they started charging me more because i was over 10 and couldn't order from the kids menu because it was only for kids. We havent gone back since and lately we have been loving Kyushu in Neutral Bay. read more

Steps now taken to call our waiter (bald guy with glasses and no clue) I ordered mojito. 30 minutes later no mojito as he forgot to put it in. 30 min after this apology mojito arrives (I'm still thirsty as is the table who have not been offered refills) mains arrive 10:30pm (hungry and not drunk is very dull) more apologies, 1 wrong order of lamb, 1 wrong order of no mushroom sauce and 1 meal never turned up!!! Shocking for a supposed 1 chefs hat venue. Won't be back as my 2nd mojito is apparently still on its way. read more
