I'm a first time homebuyer who was in need of securing a basement that had sustained years of water…read moredamage because of neglect and poor maintenance. The scope of the job was tremendous as it required shoring up a crumbling foundation, installing an internal weeping system and adding new windows. After several bids, GLC Waterproofing came out as the best of a mediocre bunch. Hudson Valley lacks reputable waterproofing specialists who are diligent, thorough, fair and honest. John Batagalia, owner of GLC, appeared to be the most willing to take on our job and stood out as the most competent bid. After three weeks of construction, GLC wrapped up their work but not without reservation as to their work practices. The basement is not completely waterproof, as there is a persistent leak that creeps through a corner of the foundation. John serviced the leak once but it reappeared one week later. I contacted his office for a second follow up and have yet to receive a response. The weeping system has yet to collect any run off water, so I'm not certain as to the usefulness of that device. Foam insulation was added to the walls after it was reinforced with spray concrete but it seems that add on was done to hide the fact that the walls were not, or never intended to be waterproof. Foam insulation was sprayed everywhere without any concern for piping and access to other maintenance items. A new concrete floor was poured but was done so poorly that the ground is unleveled and pock marked with air bubbles. The new concrete also covered existing pipes as if we didn't need them, and John and his guys assumed no responsibility for their misunderstanding. The window and door installation was acceptable but John failed to address a request that we made by including a steel door. Even though we were quoted for a steel door, a $1200-$1500 expenditure (and a 3-4 month wait for a custom fabrication), he purchased a $100 flimsy wood door from Home Depot and custom fit it for our dimensions without informing us of his intentions. So I am not sure where the difference went towards in terms of the overall job since we were never provided a breakdown of costs. With that said, there were several matters that John took his own initiative on without consulting us on the changes made and the quality of the modifications. Costs were concealed and there was a lot of ambiguity as to what had been done to secure the foundation. We only took John's word but in hindsight, I am not certain if I'd take his with a grain of salt. A lack of communication and transparency on John's part reflects poorly on his business management skills. We requested concrete (no pun intended) numbers on the materials purchased but he refused to provide a concise breakdown of costs because "he has never done that" for a client. FOH. Never done that? Are you serious? I'm sorry but as a business owner myself, auditing is a big part of running a successful enterprise. For John, it was merely an inconvenience and it was more work to done that wasn't worth validating, a practice that is absolutely unprofessional in my book. Then again, we are talking about contractors in Orange County New York where they breed shady contractors. But I digress. Furthermore, GLC's office secretary is a reflection of this professional indifference, as Kristine, constantly harassed us for payment even though it was understood that we could not render payment until the bank cut checks for the job since payment was tied to our mortgage. She played stupid but I highly doubt she was playing at all, and indicated that she was unaware of the situation. Whatever. Chalk it up to only having a high school level education. The only highlight of the experience is Ken Kobza, a sales rep for GLC. He seems like a thorough and honest man, as he has been the most responsive to our requests and concerns. Would I hire GLC Waterproofing again? Absolutely not. Recommendations? A categorical no. Do I hate them? I don't think they are terrible, they are just not honest and forthright with their business practice, and that's not too much to ask for considering the scope and cost of the job. FYI $20k was spent on this job, a decent chunk of change for first time homebuyers. John complained that the scope of the job was big and too much of a task. So why bother taking it on if it's that much of a problem? The answer is there is money to be made off first time homebuyers. GLC is an example of the rampant unprofessionalism and entitlement that contractors exhibit in the Orange County area, as they tend to take advantage of first time homeowners and get away with a lot of underhanded stuff. I've filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and contacted the NY Orange County Executive's Office to inquire on measures to ensure businesses like GLC Waterproofing do not continue to do business in this area and not face repercussions on their shoddy workmanship and unprofessional business practic

The first guy who did the work was actually great and did a good job, but then he left the company right afterwards for unknown reasons. A few weeks later, we had another problem after a very heavy storm, so we called them back. John, the owner, came to the house and talked to my husband. Said we needed a sump pump and spontaneously reduced the price from $2700 down to $1800. Then said we have to remove our built-in shelves. So we got our contractor to come remove the brand new, custom shelves, and he said, "I don't understand why he needs them to be removed. Ask him if it's really necessary." So I emailed the secretary, who spoke to him and wrote me back that he would try to do it with the shelves present. Day of the job, he shows up with a couple other guys, marches into my basement where I was standing, doesn't even introduce himself. I had to ask him three times, "Who are you?"...finally even raising my voice a little to get him to stop talking over me and answer the question. Then he immediately gets upset that the shelves are still present, even when I read the email to him. Blamed me, argued with me, interrupted me, talked over me, raised his voice to me, claimed he never said he would try to work with the shelves there, insulted the secretary "[she] doesn't know anything, she's just a secretary." I finally told him to get out of my house. Then an hour later, his secretary writes me that this is my fault because "you agreed to remove the shelves." I'm still shaking from the experience. If they continue to harass me about it, I'll call the police.

I felt the need to write this review, although technically Greg and I have never done business. In…read morethe recent round of rain storms, my sump pump stopped working as it is supposed to, and I ended up with about 5 inches of groundwater in the basement. I was able to get the sump pump working again, but 3 days after it stopped raining, I was still getting a lot of water in the pit. I found a sticker for Contractors Waterfproofing, and figured they might of installed the system for the old owners, so I gave them a call. From the moment he picked up Greg was service oriented and responsive. He asked for my address to look up the job, and when he couldn't find it, he called back within 5 minutes to ask what was going on. I explained the problem, and he immediately told me that was normal for my part of town, and told me I just needed to replace the pump and I would be fine. He offered me a price that was half what his competitors charge, but I told him I would do the work myself since I am capable. He then answered a ton of questions about the install, and we had a great conversation about life and how my son could maximize his potential long-term, as he is currently a plumbers apprentice. The bottom line is that the system Greg installed 20 years ago is still working perfectly, and when the pump failed, he not only gave me a fair price, but then walked me through how to do the job myself. This is unheard of in 2025. Greg will get all my business going forward. Thank you.

It was located at the lowest point of the neighborhood so that the yard is over 4 feet below the street grade. Owner, Zack Khan, walked off the job and placed a mechanics lien on our home after we refused to pay $14,500 more when the job was supposed to have been completed. Zack had already hit us with demands for more money and change orders, which we paid because we believed that in the end we would have our home back more beautiful than before disaster had hit it. Zach had originally told us that God had been good to him, and he was going to pass that goodness on to us by even doing some things for free. He told us he felt bad for all that we had been through and that he would do a great job and we would be very happy with his work. Instead, he threatened us with foreclosure and now it has taken us more than a year to fix his shoddy work and we are still not done. If we could give his company zero stars even that would be too good. There were so many things wrong with Zack's workmanship starting with the kitchen cabinets that don't even match. We have four different style faces on the cabinets and drawers in our kitchen. In addition, he cut window frames and door frames in order to make the counters fit. The short fat refrigerator he ordered also did not fit and we had to order a special size refrigerator costing a couple thousand dollars. What was supposed to be a custom kitchen looks like something out of a big box store with cabinets that are crooked, soft close hardware that doesn't work, and there were no handles on the drawers or cabinets. Nothing was measured properly. We even had to demo a doorway because his measurements were off and the laundry machines would not fit through the door. The laundry closet also was not measured properly and the doors will not close with the machines inside so the framing and doors all have to be redone. The bathroom is also a disaster, with the light fixture hung upside down and not centered over the mirror, and the cabinet under the sink that was supposed to be freestanding, broken and nailed to the wall with horrible, dirty caulk, all around it. The medicine cabinet, which is round, was put in a square hole and framed out that way. The hardwood floors throughout the house are not hardwood at all, but fabricated wood from Lumber Liquidators that is already scratched up and chipping and his workers literally nailed the wood down with the nails showing along the edges. He built a massive bedroom closet that takes up a quarter of our very small bedroom and none of the bedroom closets do not even have hanging poles or shelves. The bedroom door does not even line up with the frame so the door cannot close and there is a hole in the door. None of the door handles were even installed. Most electrical (which he was never contractor to do any electrical) had to be redone by a licensed electrician in order for us to get our certificate of occupancy. In the meantime, the list goes on and on. There were areas of the contract that were never even completed despite the fact that Zack was paid in full, such as the window in the basement that was supposed to be built, but is still boarded up, and the attic stairs and door that were never done at all. We we do not want to see anyone else go through what we have gone through with this contractor and that is the only reason that we are writing this review. It has taken us well over a year to address these problems. This was the absolute worst experience we ever had with a contractor. Even worse than the guy who almost burned our home down prior to needing this rebuild. Zack completely took advantage of us during a time in which we were desperate. He talked a great talk and put on a great show. No surprise there, it turns out his New York license is actually as a home improvement sales person license. We are in the process of filing additional complaints against this contractor. Don't make the same mistake that we did; Don't be conned by Zack Khan.
