Rib eye, Mac and cheese, and calamari

Was extremely impressed with our experience at The Barrington Steakhouse. Will definitely be back. We dined with our 2.5 year old and our server was very accommodating. Delicious food. Best calamari I think I have ever had!

    Selection of oysters.

OMG the food here was AMAZING. We stopped here for lunch because I really wanted oysters. The oysters were fantastic, so fresh and plump. We both had the steak sandwich off the lunch menu, and dug right in (hence no pic). It was so, so good. A perfect combination of flavour and texture with the bread, arugula, dry aged steak and crispy fried onions. And the garlic aioli, there are almost no words, just perfect. Highly recommend.

When a storm is setting in, what is one to do? The answer is obviously to load up on oysters and steak.  I hadn't been to Barrington Steakhouse before, and neither had my co-workers, so we moseyed over to load up on protein before the first of our big February storms. The restaurant is the most recent addition to the Halifax portfolio of PEI's Murphy Group of Restaurants, and adds some depth to the steakhouse market in Halifax beyond the faded star of Ryan Duffy's, chain Keg, and the stratospheric prices of CUT. I'm not a steakhouse guy; they've got their format and a fairly limited framework that isn't particularly enticing to me to go to frequently. Get some steak, potatoes, overpriced sautéed mushrooms and onions, some seafood, add in some classy-ish decor, and bam!, you've got another steakhouse. Frankly, there's a lot of better ways to spend $40 or $50, and higher, for just an entree, especially these days in Halifax. That all said, when in Rome. It was a quiet night, and we took up shop in their lounge area on the ground floor, forgoing what I assume is an even nicer area upstairs. It's a beautiful space, with lots of brickwork, and a killer bar with green leather-backed chairs. Calling them a bar stool seems indignifying. Their menu did have some interesting items like a duck confit and rosti app, octopus, and seafood bruschetta. We ordered charcuterie and cheese boards to start, as well as a spread of a few types of oysters. For my main, I went with the 10 oz New York strip, and chose their frites as my side. An Old Fashioned went down smoothly while we waited on our appetizers, and we soon had a pile of proteins before us. My Merigomish oysters were quite large, with a medium level of brine-iness. I mostly took them straight up with a squirt of lemon juice, though the apple mignonette and cocktail sauces were quite tasty. The charcuterie board had a nice spread of meats from Ratinaud and possibly some house-cured ones as well. Being the duck fan that I am, that's what stood out for me. On the cheese board, a spread of a triple cream brie, cheddar and gorgonzola were pretty standard, but hey, I love cheese. Our steaks starting coming in shortly after we had lackadaisically finished our apps. Although my NY strip was the smallest size of that cut, it was still a hefty cut of meat. Nicely seared with requisite hatch marks, it wasn't cooked to the rare I requested, but I'm not the type to waste a medium-rare cut of beef. The veggies on the side were a bit sparse, but still tender crisp and a contrast to the other rich parts of my meal. The frites were the best executed part of the dish - crisp to the last fry, and the garlic aioli and balsamic reduction drizzled on top added a ton of flavour. Within the format that it's in, Barrington Steakhouse is putting out some solid product in a beautiful location. My infrequent steakhouse patronage may not bring me back again, but they're a welcome addition to the downtown dining scene.

The steak was great, juicy and tasty, but the mushroom was kind of salty. Wish can enjoy oysters next time

Crusted tenderloin with herb & garlic mashed potato

When we lived in Charlottetown we occasionally went to Sim's Corner Steakhouse and Oyster Bar, it was our favourite restaurant for special occasions. Ten years later and I still remember some of the meals we had there. We were delighted to hear the Murphy Group was opening a steakhouse here in Halifax. We finally made it to The Barrington for my birthday dinner in December. I usually try not to have any expectations when trying a restaurant for the first time but with this place having a similar menu to Sim's and owned by the same group, I have to admit, my expectations were pretty high. I liked the décor. We were seated upstairs where the dark wood and booths made for quiet, intimate dining. There are also bigger spaces which would be great for larger parties. My husband ordered the New York strip with fries and a side of the herb & garlic mushrooms. I had the blue cheese crusted tenderloin with the herb & garlic mashed potatoes. Our meals arrived relatively quickly. Included with the steak and potatoes were a few chunks of mixed veg. I have to say, the presentation on the plate was a bit lacking but was hoping the flavours would make up for it. I was disappointed. The steak was fine, more rare then the ordered medium rare but I was okay with that and expect it with tenderloin, nice caramelization on the outside. The blue cheese crust was not overly flavourful. The potatoes were fine but didn't have the depth of flavor I was hoping for. The one thing that blew me away on the plate? The little piece deep fried cauliflower, now that packed a flavor punch. My husband declared his steak to be good and the fries, well, they were fries. His disappointment was the mushrooms. I tried them, they were dry and, once again, lacked any real flavor, even after asking for some salt to add to them. I don't normally have dessert but it was my birthday so yeah, I had the chocolate buttermilk cake. The plating was far more "artistic" than the dinner, it was good, but I didn't walk away thinking "I must have that again". The wine list is massive. I don't have a very sophisticated palate when it comes to wine but I do enjoy a glass or two with my meal. The wine list was a bit hard to navigate, I suppose we could have asked for the sommelier to help but we didn't. Prices range from $40 - $1200, we did find something closer to the less expensive end. I understand there is different pricing for restaurants but I balk at paying almost 3 times the price that one pays at the store, I feel like I'm subsidizing that massive list so they can offer more expensive, slower moving wines. It would have been nice to have a few more Nova Scotian wines as well. As to the service, our server was nice, personable enough. I just didn't find the level of service or attention to detail I was expecting. Case in point, the mushrooms. We left over half of them on the plate. When our server removed our plates she did not ask about the mushrooms. I expected it was pretty obvious that there was an issue but it was ignored. That wouldn't have happened at Sims. We didn't bother saying anything. Bottom line, my expectations were not met. At this price point I expect more attention to detail, flavours that wow and a meal that makes me want to keep coming back. That didn't happen. I've had better, less expensive meals elsewhere. Not sure I'll be back at these prices.

Originally had planned on going to The Press Gang for oysters but they didn't accept walk-ins on this particular evening we went. The hostess was gracious enough to make some recommendations and thus we ended up at The Barrington. Boy, are we glad we did! We sidled up to the bar in front of the oyster display and so began a long night of shucking. It was such a pleasure chatting with the bar staff and learning about locally sourced oysters, many of which we haven't had in Toronto. -would recommend to a friend -would return again Cheers!

The atmosphere is great! Awesome staff! Our server Jason was very helpful and knowledgeable for our drinks selection. Food portions were large and plated with class! We had mussels, cooked to perfection, no slimy ones and every shell had a mussel. Ceased salad was the best we ever had. The bacon in the salad is ver unique! Next is the steak. We chose Rib Eye. Perfection in grilling for our tastes! Beautiful spice and tenderness. I must say, this is even better than my BBQ! The steak fries....OMG! Don't go without trying these! And last but certainly not least, dessert. We had smoked cheese cake! Wow, home cooked cheese cake with a fun smoke gig on presentation! Also had rhubarb cake. All in all, best meal I have ever had. All for under a hundred bucks! Don't pass this place up! Well worth it!

So it's a Friday early evening in mid August and seven of us are working our way through the Stillwell beer list, when we come over all ensurient. Steak is agreed to be just the ticket and with the Barrington Steakhouse just two doors along, we have a plan. I therefore popped in and asked if they could take our group in about half an hour. Bear in mind it's 1800 in high season. The three delightful ladies on the desk soon established that they could make up a table for us in the ground floor bar area, the first floor restaurant being fully booked, unsurprisingly. I returned to Stillwell to give the glad tidings and after mopping up another couple of beers, we were back at the restaurant, being shown to our table. The bar area is a good size and nicely appointed. Probably room for 30 or 40 covers, with a well stocked long bar as the centrepiece. Both food and service were first class. We shared a charcuterie and a cheeseboard for starters. The former in particular was excellent, with a wide variety of local produce. For mains, I went for a ribeye, which was wonderfully crisped on the outside and perfectly rare inside. Sadly my wife's burger came with a strong cheese sauce, to which she is not partial and which was not advertised on the menu. No problem, the restaurant simply didn't charge us for it. I avoided the wine list as I was driving, so didn't suffer the usual pecuniary shock associated with Halifax restaurant wine prices. Overall a really excellent evening and we'll definitely be back before too long.

Ribeye dinner for 2 and charcuterie board!

As the name suggests, it is a wine bar, so a good selection of local and imported wines. I had the steak tartar, followed by the scallops, and finished with the triamisu affogatto. The steak tartar was the stand out. It didn't come with crackers, so I ordered some foccacia. I really didn't need to. The dill pickle croutons were such a nice touch in flavor and texture. The scallops were interesting...perfectly seared, and all the components of the dish (roasted cauliflower, sour cherry, dill) are good on their own but didn't really come together to form a dish. So it is a bunch of tasty things on a plate that don't really relate to each other, but all good on their own. Finally, the tiramisu...loved the affogatto, and sabayon all worked together beautifully, and it is a large portion, very sharable! Lastly, the service was great. I was solo and felt very well taken care of

Halifax has never had a shortage of Italian restaurants, with many of them being regarded among the…read morebest fine dining places in the city for years. And while I was in exile in Ottawa for several years, just the downtown has inexplicably added several more Italian spots. Of those though, it was Sapori's casual, street-food-inspired menu that piqued my interest the most (my condolences to the regrettably-named, Sketti and Ball). One day, my wife and I popped in for dinner after work. The elongated restaurant was decently full between regular diners and an solid showing for a pizza-making class. It happened to be Dine Around, so the arancini and square pizza would have to wait, as if there's one thing I like more than street food, it's a deal! Dine Around menus are typically prix fixe with an assortment of choices, and Sapori's was no different. Choose between a few apps, mains and desserts and voila, you've got yourself a three-course meal for $30. I kept it simple and went with the classics - a Caesar salad to start, spaghetti and meatballs, and a profiterole for dessert. The Caesar was sizeable and serviceable, with no departures from the formula, but no standout twists or quality ingredients here either. Romaine, real pancetta, and crumbled parmesan, which sadly wasn't the real deal Parmigiano Regiano. It was big enough for both my wife and I, which was an unexpected bonus though. Next up was the spaghetti and meatballs, a comfort food classic beloved by both young and old. The al dente spaghetti was evenly coated in the pomodoro sauce, and the two meatballs were saucy, tender and hearty. A solid coating of Parmesan and a sprinkle of parsley completed the picture. The star of the show was a bit of a tease, because there was just one (I get it, food costs, etc), but the profiterole was excellent. The choux pastry was lightly crisp on the outside, with a wonderfully rich vanilla cream inside, and a dusting of confectioners sugar and a caramel drizzle took things up a couple notches. And by "things" I mean "my blood sugar". My next time there found me swinging by for a solo lunch, with their casual fare in my sights. Their lunch deal (slice of pizza + soup or salad + a cookie) was an unreal deal for a place that isn't one of Halifax's dicey pizza points, so I jumped on that. Feeling hungry, and wanting to support them beyond the basic deal, I also tacked on a single arancini and a can of San Pellegrino. For my slice I chose the salsciccia which comes with Italian sausage (are the wires connecting on "salsciccia"?), salami, caramelized onions, and mozza, with a drizzle of honey to top it off. It was a hefty slice, with a thick, airy crust that reminded me of focaccia. The sweet honey paired well with the savoury and salty meats, as well as the lightly sweet and acidic tomato sauce. A solid slice, for sure! The garden salad was a mix of fresh greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumber and carrot, with an herbaceous vinaigrette to brighten up your palette. I enjoyed the crunch of the sizeable chunks of carrot, in contrast to the more common shredded carrot. The arancini disappeared quickly, as the crispy shell and cheesy rice within begged to be finished in as few bites as possible. A tip of the cap to Sapori for giving my lonely arancini a nice plating with a dollop of tomato sauce to hold it to the plate, and a sprinkle of fresh parsley and parm to top it off. Mid-day, mid-week staffing was minimal, and owner Luca Ferrante took mine and other customers' orders with friendly aplomb. Halifax's fine dining scene has long been dominated by Italian restaurants, but more casual fair like Sapori deserves its own place in the city and our bellies.

The Long Version: We had planned to go to Le Bistro by Liz on our last trip to Halifax, but we couldn't because the restaurant was unexpectedly closed due to some emergency or it was closed for a private function, I forget, but I made a note to try again the next time we were in town. So on our most recent visit we made specific plans to go and I'm so glad we finally made it there. This place is very popular! We almost didn't get a table. We didn't make reservations because while on vacation, I like to do things on my own time and don't like committing to being at a certain place at a certain time. We arrived at 5:15pm thinking it wouldn't be busy because it was early to eat, but many tables were full. We were advised we could have a table but would need to leave by 6:30pm because they had a reservation then. Hey if they can serve us that quickly, we were down for a quick meal. I got the Seafood Florentine Crepe ($22.95) and my husband got the Seafood Risotto ($29.95). He also got a glass of Malbec ($17) and we shared the large Profiteroles ($10.95) for dessert. My Seafood Crepe had 2 large Digby scallops, 2 large shrimp and several pieces of salmon, all in a bechamel sauce with onions and spinach. It came with a mixed greens salad which was rather tiny. It was lettuce, one small wedge of tomato and a single slice of carrot. I asked for the dressing on the side and it came as requested. The crepe was delicious and I loved all the seafood in it. The sauce was very rich and creamy. The portion sizes are European (i.e. small, lol) but I felt this was a case of quality over quantity. Although I felt an extra handful of salad would have gone a long way. The salad looked more like a garnish to me than a true side dish. My husband's Seafood Risotto had 3 large Digby scallops and 2 large shrimp on top and small pieces of lobster mixed into the risotto. He really enjoyed his dish. It too was rich and creamy. We shared the large order of Profiteroles (2 profiteroles) and I was pleasantly surprised to see they plated it on 2 separate plates, so we had 1 profiterole each and each was covered in sliced almonds and chocolate sauce and caramel sauce. These were good but not as great as I imagined. The choux pastry didn't have that distinctive chew to it and perhaps was weighed down by too much sauce. Nonetheless, we enjoyed them. Service was courteous and attentive. Even though we were given a bottle of water for the table, our server topped off our waters when she saw they were running low. And we got our meals very quickly. We were out a few minutes before our 6:30pm deadline, lol. Decor is very cute with all things France, like Eiffel tower decorations, signage in French and things like that. Their menu lists prices in Canadian dollars and also in Euros. Not sure what exchange rate they use though, lol. So happy we got to try Le Bistro by Liz. (184)
