I haven't needed to use the barking dog lately, but when I did several years ago, it was just fine. They take good care of the animals and if need be they give them a bath before they get home. read more

If I could give ZERO stars, I absolutely would! I brought my 10 month old puppy, Lightning to The Barking Dog on 2/22 for 8 days of boarding while our family went to Disney. Staff was instructed that Lightening eats 1 cup four times a day. We brought him with his own food, treats and his bed from home. He was a happy, energetic and most importantly healthy puppy when we left him. I checked up on him throughout the week and was told he was having a great time and eating well. So I was SHOCKED when I picked him up, only to find an emaciated, dehydrated and lethargic Lightning. He had clearly lost a lot of weight and had no puppy pep to even muster a proper hello. I asked for an explanation and told that he only grazed over his food over the week. Furious I demanded to know why I wasn't called or told of the issue the numerous times I called! We sent him with an unopened 15 lb bag of food and we discovered he had only received 1 cup twice a day and had eaten less than half of what was given. Rather than arguing I immediately took Lightning to the emergency veterinary hospital. Lightning lost 9 lbs in a week, was severely dehydrated, had a slight fever, his coat has dry and flakey, visible signs he'd had diarrhea, and no evidence of stool in his bowels. I can assure you I will never board there or likely anywhere ever again and will strongly discourage everyone I know from using The Barking Dog. Not only was my dog grossly neglected but they made no effort to correct or communicate the problem before or after pick up, instead they made endless excuses. WARNING GRAPHIC PICTURE: I boarded my dog Feb. 20-25th. I also scheduled a grooming on the last day Feb. 25th. When I returned to pick my dog up I was horrified/shock to see the picture below was my dog's bottom. I was told when I picked her up she has a small red spot on her bottom and the groomer placed ointment on her bottom. Initially, I was thinking a small razor burn. I sat her in the car and noticed her bottom she could not sit she was in pain, she was also clearly bleeding. I walked back in and discussed that something is majorly wrong with my dog's bottom they nodded and said from the groomer it was the feces on her bottom and looked like it was there two weeks. Also agreed I should see a vet. I left in shock and just cried home. They let my dog sit in her feces and then blame me saying it was there for two weeks I am completely devastated. I DID NOT bring in my dog like this EVER. I went to the vet the next day who said she has never seen an dogs bottom like this unless it was an anal gland abcess. She said two things occurred, one she sat with her hair matted in her feces or she got groomed and scooted her bottom across the floor causing skin breakdown. However, she said the grooming had to be older than a day or two since the infection has spread up her tail. The vet said this is a very recent occurence. Note: she didn't get her grooming until the last day. At this time my dog is bleeding, screaming when she is toileted (the blood and screaming when toileted tells me she was completely neglected), in pain. Per vet, she diagnosed her with severe ulceration, skin infection, and inflammation. She was placed on antibiotic cream, oral antibiotics, she had to wear a cone of shame, steroid, probiotic. MULTIPLE vet visits. After the front desk tried to blame me I called the manager who said the same thing. I discussed this was not present when I dropped her off. She said well groomer said it was two weeks. Multiple questions followed: Is the groomer a vet? I was promised a free bath during boarding so this was not caught? She was screaming in pain/bleeding this went unnoticed by staff? Ultimately, I was transferred to general manager Karen Lombardi, stated it was missed because it was directly under her tail and was not visible. However, looked to be two weeks old. Again, displacing blame on a customer after completely gross care. Also asking is this part of medical history. In all I was reimbursed for ALL medical bills and her boarding. This was horrible care. I would NEVER send my animal here again.  PS I called the groomer myself she did indeed state it was matted with feces and looked like it had been there awhile. read more

We tried daycare and luckily the first day was free.We checked in on a Saturday and the staff at the front desk seemed to be cold and very short with us that we were there. Even seemed more bothered we wanted to see the facility since it was a new place. Honestly, I just got a bad vibe and they seemed to not care about what I had to say and wanted to just get him in. Also I asked how long it will take for him to go in with the group to play so we could see how he was. She rolled her eyes and said he's going in with the next group, it will be awhile(basically will you just leave already). They got a 3 star for the interaction with new customers, seemed like it was just another dog. We don't have kids and just like a daycare, you want a tour. Luckily the person at the pickup area was friendly and kind telling us how he did. Unfortunately he didn't play and he was nervous with new people. His hind legs were covered in mud and she was nice enough to offer to rinse them off quickly. Our dog has been going to the same place for 2 years and we wanted to have a back up place, especially since this has an outdoor area. My dog absolutely loves doggie daycare here, it's her favorite place. (This is the first review I've written for Yelp, I couldn't stand that the only review for the Barking Dog was a bad one). After my puppy's first day of daycare here, they gave me a cute "report card" with a photo of her playing, a written description of how she did, and a list of the other dogs she played with. For daycare they use a rotating schedule of 20 minutes (supervised) playtime outside (with other dogs their size/temperament), 20 minutes playtime inside, and 20 minutes resting in a crate. Less expensive and more fun for the dog than a dog walker. Plus she gets lots of socialization with other dogs. The staff is very caring and knowledgeable. Our dog considers all of them her best friends. They also offer training classes at all levels, plus grooming. We have used both and had no problems. It's convenient to pick my dog up in the evening with her nails trimmed and/or just having had a bath. I have not boarded my dog here, but I have boarded my cat. Everything went well and it was less expensive than boarding her at the vet. I definitely recommend The Barking Dog for doggie daycare and training classes. read more

Depressing place, impolite worker We visited this place on a Sunday and the staff at the entrance told us immediately that they did not have time for us to get a tour of their facility (we were thinking of boarding a dog here). They told us they were too busy and had just 2 staff members for all the dogs. The woman working at the front desk led us about 20 feet away, opened a doorway, and showed us a depressing row of concrete cells for dogs. She did not wait for us to ask any questions. Within 10 seconds, she had closed the door and led us back to the entrance, given us some literature, and started helping the other customer there. She had no time for our questions (and we are polite people), talking rapidly and trying to end the conversation as quickly as possible. We asked to see the common area where dogs run and interact and she said they had one but could not show it because it was "currently in use and locked" This was nonsense because adog kennel business wants prospective customers to see the common area with happy dogs running around. When we asked what she meant, she said "The kids are out there and he is throwing rocks for them." I asked what any of that meant, she said "I mean he is throwing rocks for dogs, not kids." When I asked still what any of this nonsensical sentence meant, she said that we should call another time to talk with staff; she was too busy. The worker made it sound like it was our fault for not understanding her Alice In Wonderland nonsense sentences. We won't be calling again. In fact, we will not be passing by here ever again. Avoid this business. Each dog appears to be held in an individual concrete cell. Dogs were barking everywhere, walking up to the gates in their cells looking for some attention. We were told that dogs get no interaction with humans and only interact with other dogs if the owner pays extra for a half hour of playtime every 2 days. A half hour every two days!!!! This is the polar opposite of other places we have seen, where the dogs were fully supervised in common areas, running around and having fun all day long. Those other places are the same price as this dog gulag. In my opinion, this place looks like the kind of zoo or kennel that was popular before animal rights groups called them inhumane and forced changes. If you have a vicious dog, put it here in solitary confinement. If you have any other kind of dog, go elsewhere. read more

The first few times our dog stayed here, it seemed fine. Nothing major to report. We alerted the staff of his dietary concerns and made sure they were aware. He vomited once while he was there. They said he seemed fine otherwise. Fine, dogs vomit. He was rather skittish in the car and even when he got home. I had a bad feeling about it, but nothing concrete. On our 5th time using the Barking Dog for boarding (4 days total, this time), I felt like I should try another place, but went against my gut. Well, I won't be taking my dog there again. The last time, I picked him up and he seemed upset and anxious. We get outside and it was CLEAR that he had not been let out all day. The amount of urinating and pooping he did... no way they let him out regularly. Our dog has pancreatitis and needs consistent bathroom breaks and to be fed his food only (no treats, changes to diet, etc). I've explained this to them, I always mentioned it when we would drop him off. When we checked his bag, they hadn't fed him half of his food. I called and the staff person said that he was probably fed whatever stock food they had because a worker couldn't locate his bag. Not cool. Well, we got home and he had the worst diarrhea he's had in years. Took him to the vet after a day because he wouldn't eat or drink and was hiding under the bed and growling at us. He was sick for about a week and had to be given fluids and pain medication to help with his pancreas flare up. We found another place in Bedford that's great and the rate is higher, but he's been fine ever since. read more

I was scheduled for an evaluation by Val "the trainer."for my older dog and my newly acquired puppy, the older does not like the new puppy. When I arrived I went into the main entrance with the two dogs on leashes looking for Val.the "trainer" the waiting area was loud and seemingly chaotic. The women behind the desk was aggravated and did not want to help me with the two dogs. . When I pleated with her to take one of the dogs and escort me to the trainer she shot our from behind her greeting area and grab my older dog and literally dragged him outside down the walkway to the training room. My older dog was scared! When I met Val "the trainer" for an professional evaluation, she had her two untrained dogs tied on leashes 1 foot from where we were standing. One of her dogs was growling at my older dog stressing him even more. The trainer Val screamed at her smaller grouchy dog three times to "lay down." I then asked her if she was an actual certified trainer and she at first said "yes" then admitted that she was not certified but Val thought of herself as being qualified because she has had dogs for years. At one point she recommend that I let the dogs do what they have to do. I let her know I was not going to let the dogs hurt each other. I've used this company to board my 2 German Shepherds when I've been away for a few days at a time. The staff here is friendly and caring and takes very good care of my two pups. I usually bring my own food for my dogs and if your dog is there for more than a few days they wash your dog for free. I would highly recommend them to anyone! read more

I have previous experience working at one of these facilities. The owner has nothing but the utmost care & concern for the wellbeing of any pets staying at these facilities. Just a quick note, on a previous review, not to defend anyone, but in all kennels dogs are kept in their runs over night. It's the safest for them. Yes they may have to potty, but the runs are big enough that there is plenty of room if need be for them to potty & not have to be 'near' it. If you're boarding your dog these are the sacrifices you have to make :) But these facilities are the best!! read more

I don't know what star to give. normally it would be a 5 now just a 3. I always took my beloved dogs there and they were always happy and well taken care of. For years I have my Golden going then both my Golden and Shepard. one at a time they passed away and said I would never get another dog. Then my Son came with two little joys only 10 pounds each, so when we decided to go away there was no question on where to take them. I am just disappointed that they would charge me a whole day because I was 1 1/2 hours late. I can see if I was 4 or 5 hours. I know business is business but it kind of turned me off some. read more

I had been bringing my dog here for over 8 months, and initially loved the place. It was very convenient to leave my pup here to play all day while I had to work. However, there have been too many instances where I had become more and more uncomfortable bringing her there. A few months back, I was picking her up at the end of the day and a gentleman was in to pick up his dog - however, the staff had given his dog to someone else to take home. He was infuriated - imagine going to pick up your dog and they tell you that he/she was already picked up by someone else and you have no idea who! This mistake probably happened because they are extremely inconsistent with their sign in process. I can't tell you how many times they did not sign in my dog, and tried to charge me for a full day when I had her in there for a half day. This seriously worried me. I also noticed that they were not checking ID's for others listed on my pick up list - which means anyone that knows I bring my dog there could go right in and steal my dog. Crazy to me! I found out my dog had giardia - which is extremely easy to get/pass from and to other dogs. I did not bring her to daycare while she was on medication and did not plan to until i got a clean fecal back. I called the daycare to inform them of this and that she was there while she was still undiagnosed... I asked what their procedure was when a dog gets a parasite like this. It took me over a week just to speak to a manager. and then she informed me that she does not let ANY of the other owners know. Which means, if my dog passed it to another dog at daycare, their owners will never know. They don't even follow up on their 6 month "rule" of clean fecals. Why would I bring my dog back to a daycare if they have NO process in place to ensure the other dogs arent sick or have a parasite. They will just pass it around for ever and eventually get so sick they could die. If you're reading this, and you've had your dog at this daycare in the last three to four months, please go get their stool tested. I still decided to give it ONE last shot and I wish I never did!!! I dropped my dog off and went off to work. On my way home from work to pick her up I got in a car accident and called them at 5:45 to tell them i would be late - left a voicemail- they called me back at 6:08 and the woman stated everyone is leaving for the night. I said I can have someone there in 15 minutes i got in an accident and i didnt plan this. she started yelling at me no one is going to wait until 630 for you and we wont pay overtime for our employees to wait. I said to her its 15 minutes its an extenuating circumstance i got in a bad accident, and my dog is an emotional support animal i cant be with out her. She didnt care she said sorry your dog is going to be boarded and im not waiting i have a life too. I was FURIOUS i have never left my dog alone over night and i cannot be without her when i am alone. And not only this, i have had prior conversations with the manager because i someimes get out of work late, and she told me she would work with me if i am late up until 630 - they even charge 15 late fee if youre late and thats why i brought it up to her - but why would they do that if they close right at six? I've been there late before and theyve still been there. But it just seems like this lady just wanted to get out and not care about the customers that are paying $27 a day 4-5 times a week! HORRIBLE customer service from this lady. when i finally got there everything was closed and i was unable to get my dog. I went to pick her up at 6 in the morning and confronted the same woman I spoke to the night prior. She gave me the biggest attitude, and then i said go get my dog. I listened while she went and got her and she yelled COME HERE, and I heard my dog scream/cry like shes never cried before and when she came into view she was dragging my poor dog yanking on her leash. She is a MANIAC.and i wanted to kill her for abusing my dog!!!! this place is a complete joke. Trash! I would not send my worst enemy to this place let alone a poor innocent animal. god only knows what goes on behind closed doors. stay away! theyre a trash daycare with even trashier people working for them. read more

My dog LOVED this place. I would ask him if he wanted to go on VACATION and he would run to the door because he knew he was going to see the staff at The Barking Dog. The grooming staff took excellent care of him and I have never been disappointed. He now lives on a ranch with a my family (who never travels) but if I went over to get him and tell him where he was going, he'd be thrilled. He is a 125-lb English Style Chocolate Lab. Never Again They have a nice website, with services outlined However after a family medical emergency which required family dog to be a long term boarder (90plus days) not only was the management "sloppy" with their billing less than accurate, and the special rates for long term boarding which is noted on the website were never offered and oddly didn't seem to apply. The dogs diet and behaviors drastically changed without notice. Updated vaccinations by mobile vet service were not properly documented. Staff less than professional - the management team when asked about inconsistencies were evasive at best, tone was demeaning and condescending, during our numerous phone calls. I do not recommend The Barking Dog. The facility is very dirty, the staff is very nice, but cleanliness is very important. The grooming part is amazing, they do such a great job on dogs of all hair types! The boarding section of the facility is almost like a jail. I boarded my dog here and the staff up front was very cold and seemed like they just wanted to take my dog and get me out of there. I don't like the crate idea for daycare. It causes a lot of stress for most dogs. I recently found a new daycare that just opened up in Windham and I think that might be a better environment for my dog. I also have talked to many staff members and they all are not on the same page as far as how the daycare system works. Don't think I will be back, got a very bad vibe from this place. Our 2 senior dogs stayed here for 10 days the first time while we moved from St. Thomas into a place here in NH. There seemed to be no problem other than a semi rude front desk staff. If we werent in a bind and tight on time, that wouldve been it for me. But my husband, the gicer of second chances, arranged for Them to stay here a second time just recently for 7 days while we went on a vacation. That WILL be the last time. Our male dog came out with a gash under his left eye all scabbed up and currently still there. Staff don't seem to know how that happened. Also, neither one of our dogs want to eat their own food...which is weird because our female is completely food driven. And, TMI coming, their poop was completely different which leads us to think that they didn't get the food we sent them with for their stay. Finally, our female is on Proin, because she has accidents...shes old....she has NEVER peed on our floor being on this med. It's been 2 years. She came home from the week away and peed on our carpet twice. Not sure if they charged us for her med administration and just didn't give it to her. Safe to say, they will never be back there again. I always brought my dogs here, never had an issue. But yesterday, I brought my dogs in to be groomed. Cost of 140.00. To start with, the grooming was horrible. My larger dog ( husky mix) was groomed horrible. His fur is very uneven and just looks stupid. My smaller dog, didn't even look like he had a bath. That is not even the bigger issue. My dogs were not allowed to relieve themselves and not able to have water for the entire day. I am really upset over this. I have been a loyal customer of this place for many years and never would have believed they treated my babies like that. They were having trouble walking due to the amount of urine they had to do, I could not believe it. I called and the manager wasn't there, I left a message, never heard from her and I e-mailed. I am waiting to hear what they have to say. Stay away!!!! read more

We boarded our two Labs here for summer vacation. They both ended up getting Kennel Cough and one of our dogs had a bloody ripped nail that needed to be cauterized at the vet. The Barking Dog staff never offered an explanation for what caused this injury. We also could never be sure that the dogs got the extra play time we paid for (and the fact that we had to wonder about that says something about the vibe we got from the place!) We never went back. We have someone come to our house to pet sit now, which is much better for our dogs and not any more expensive. I would not recommend this place. read more

Let me preface this review by stating that I have been bringing my labs to the Barking Dog for quite a while for baths and have been pleased with the service and the way they have looked upon completion. Early in December we called for an appointment for baths for our three labs and were told we could bring them in on December 21st for baths and to have their nails trimmed. On that date we brought our labs in stating to the first young lady we had an appointment for baths and nails for our three labs. We gave her our dogs names and ours as well. She stated she would meet us by our car and take the dogs in for grooming. While waiting by our car we were approached by another employee who stated we did not have an appointment and as they were booked for the day they could not not take our dogs. I told this employee we did have an appointment, but she emphatically said we did not. At that point we put our dogs back in the SUV never again to go to the Barking Dog in Derry read more

Doggy Daycare at the Barking Dog has been wonderful. My dog knows right where we are when we pull into the parking lot, walks right in to the office and doesn't even look back when we hand her over to the staff. By the time I pick her up she is EXHAUSTED, and I love that. The staff always give me a run down on how her day was, which dogs she played with, etc. I can tell she has a good time while she is here, I dont have to worry about her while I'm out, and the price is very reasonable since she only needs to go a few times per month. read more

Overall, I'm happy with The Barking Dog. The majority of the employees seem to really enjoy what they do and spending time with the dogs. They really seem to get to know the owners and the dogs. I like that they make sure dogs are properly paired in daycare so they all get along and can have fun. After daycare, my pup is usually ready for a long nap. I'm still a little torn on boarding. There is one lady in the boarding area (short blonde hair) who is rude and acts like she doesn't want to be there or care about the animals. It's really disappointing to see this because the facility and other workers are so nice. Dealing with this person is very off-putting. Also, I wish there was a report at the end of boarding telling how my dog did. Did they eat well? Did they potty? (Important because my dog has come back constipated every time. I don't blame this on the facility. I would just like to know when the problem started.) Were there any issues? This is the first place I've boarded my dog and get no feedback on their stay. For the prices I pay to board, there should be some kind of feedback. We have a few more boarding appointments, so we'll see how things go. If I'm still not sold on boarding after those visits, then I may look for another boarding facility. I'll still have my pup go to daycare there though. A minor thing, but the daily video isn't always uploaded which is annoying, but not a major thing. read more

My husband and I have been sending our miniature daschsund here, since he was 6 months old. He absolutely loves it here!! He knows as soon as we have the keys in our hand in the morning, that he is going to what we call puppy camp. The anticipation he shows when we pull into the parking lot, and tugging at the leash the whole time we walk to the daycare door, just makes us so happy. He knows exactly where to go, once he is in the door, and is so excited to see all the staff that work there. We actually appreciate the opportunity he has to take a rest after playing, since he is only 14 pounds, 40 minutes of non stop play is tiring, and a break is much needed. While we haven't used their boarding services to date, only because we are fortunate to have other arrangements. read more

I have been sending my dog to the Barking Dog since she was a puppy. She had her training their with Val, an excellent trainer whom I believe was instrumental in her ability to understand commands and the long term outcome of her demeanor.. For the first few years she went every weekday....she is now 9 years old and goes when I think she needs a full day of exercise. She is always quite happy and willing to "go & see her friends" and I have never any indication that she was afraid of arriving there and was well exercised whenever I picked her up. The staff knows her quite well and if asked will give me a full report on her behavior. There is a video screen when you arrive to pick your dig up that shows the dogs at play during the day. I cannot speak of the overnight kennel as I have never used it, but will say that the grooming is always up to my expectations. I recommend it. read more

I am not sure what is going on at this business but something is. We boarded are lab July 20 & 21. He came back to us with a large open sore on the under part of his tail. 2 trips to the vets several hundreds of dollars later it is not close to healed. Our vet stated it is unlikely that this kennel is climate controlled or this would of not of happened. Heat sores happen from animals being kept in hot and moist climates. They are insisting that the kennels are climate controlled and will not accept responsibilty for the medical bills. Shameful for a business we have used for decades with multiple dogs. read more

What do you do when the manager makes it obvious she doesn't like your puppy? She has made enough passive aggressive negative remarks in the presence of either my husband or I over the course of the last year during drop-offs and pick-ups, that we no longer feel our pet is safe staying there. Unlike every other employee at the Derry site who has welcomed our growing dog, who seems excited to see her, and appears to look forward to having her there, the manager clearly does not. We will drive the extra miles to another site where we feel comfortable that the person in charge is willing and able to work with all pets. read more

Since we brought our dog Mally to the daycare, we have been impressed by the care of the employees. We did encounter also a busy employee when we wanted to tour the facility, but we decided to give it a try. We glad we did. They trained our dog to be social, she loves to go to the daycare. The staff always tells us how her day went, even if it didn't go well. They give tips when you ask for it. The constantly take pictures and celebrate any occasion they can. You can watch the dog on the monitor when you pick her up again. We have not board our dog (overnight) at the barking dog, but I would not hesitate to do the combo of boarding and daycare. We have boarded our 2 year old golden here a few times and every time we get him back he seems very anxious. It usually lasts for about a week before he goes back to his usual self. My guess is that they barely let him out of the crate even though we paid a rediculous charge for "play time". But this last time we picked him up he got groomed and firstly the job they did was terrible his head they didn't do at all and practically shaved his whole body. And to make it worse he ended up having a breakout on his belly from whatever they were using on him. P.S. The workers are very unpleasant at the front desk. We will not be taking our dog here anymore and advise you to do the same. read more

I think it is terrible that it is hidden from you that your dog spends about 3+ hours a day in a crate while at day care. Their system of 20 minutes outside play, 20 minutes inside play, then 30 mins in a crate is aweful. I send my dog to daycare so she does not need to be in a crate! I boarded my Old English Sheepdog here one summer when we were on vacation. They asked me if I wanted him bathed when we picked him up, so I said "Yes".
