Breaded chicken cutlet on an everything bagel.
    Rich A.

Located in a nondescript shopping center just off Route 23 in Franklin Township, The Bagel Tree is a no-frills bagel and coffee shop offering a tasty selection of bagels and traditional brunch cuisine including breakfast sandwiches, omelettes, deli sandwiches, and salads. The Bagel Tree offers traditional bagels -- plain, egg, poppy, sesame, onion, garlic, salt, whole-grain, pumpernickel, and marble rye -- as well as a handful of innovative varieties, such as cinnamon raisin, blueberry, and two seasonal flavors from a rotating list of customer favorites -- jalapeño, sundried tomato basil, spinach garlic, chocolate chip, cheddar, vegetable, cranberry, french toast, and banana nut. My dining companion and I recently stopped in for a quick lunch while passing through the area on a recent Saturday afternoon and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food, cleanliness of the dining area, the variety of options on the menu, and the friendliness of the staff. The menu is relatively limited -- with a handful of omelettes, a dozen sandwiches that run the gamut from single-meat staples to more innovative options, and a few salads. While most diners were ordering iterations of breakfast sandwiches featuring the local staple Taylor Ham, we opted for the more traditional lunch selections. I ordered the breaded chicken cutlet, pounded thin and served with bbq sauce and frizzled onions, served on an everything bagel. My companion ordered the Smokehouse Panini, comprised of turkey, smoked gouda cheese, bacon, avocado, and tomato pressed on rye bread. Both of us were very happy with these selections -- made to order and served hot -- although my companion indicated her panini was missing something salty. Perhaps a pickle? The real star of the meal for me was the tasty starch-dipped french fries served alongside the Smokehouse Panini and generously shared by my dining companion. We'd definitely stop back next time we're in the area.

    Where's the cream cheese?!

I never leave a bad review, I've given this place several tries especially being closer to home, however Where is the cream cheese?!!!! All 3 bagels I ordered look like this! The guy that took and made my order had a terrible attitude and was very rude! Like don't work if you're gonna be a jerk! I would have drove back to complain but at this point I will take my loss and not go there! I'll drive further up and go elsewhere.

The bagels were so good! They also have free drip coffee. It does get a bit busy in the morning so be prepared to wait!

I pass through Monticello a few times a year and Monticello Bagel has turned into my little road…read moretrip ritual. I pull off, stretch my legs, and you can smell the toasters working the second you open the door. Last time it was a rainy morning and the whole place had that warm bakery air. I ordered an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese and a coffee. The bagel came out still warm in a brown paper bag. Good crust, proper chew, not bready. Seeds actually stick instead of shedding all over the car. Small thing, but it matters. The line can look long from the door, but it moves. I was back in my car in maybe ten minutes. Parking is straightforward. If I am trying to make time, the drive through is there and does what it should. The staff is focused and quick. Not chatty in a forced way. Just normal, which I appreciate before caffeine. This is not a fancy place and it does not try to be. No rainbow bagels, no dessert disguised as breakfast. It is a simple bagel shop that knows its lane. Price felt fair. Coffee was hot and not burnt. Cream cheese ratio was right. I am picky about that. Do I wish the menu had a little more going on. Yeah. A couple extra spreads, maybe a rotating special. If you want wild flavors, this is not that stop. But the classics are done properly, and that is why I keep coming back. If you are passing through town and need a quick breakfast that will not let you down, this is an easy yes. Park, grab a bag, get back on the road. Simple, reliable, and it hits the spot..

As luck would have it, right next door to our motel was The Bagel Tree. Upon entering, you are immediately hit with the overwhelming aromas of steaming bagels and really good coffee. If you weren't that hungry or thirsty before, you are now. There is a plethora of bagels to choose from ("Would you say I have a plethora of bagels?" "Oh yes El Guapo, you have a plethora"...haha, damn that was a good movie...) I decided to go for the tried and true bedrock of the bagel world, an Everything Bagel. A sausage egg and cheese everything bagel sandwich to be more precise. Absolutely delicious. Couldn't be any more of what I wanted. Bagel just completely crusted with toppings! And using whatever North Eastern magic, just about every speck of them stays on the bagel while you eat it! Utterly fascinating and enjoyable. Sausage was probably the same pre-made, frozen disc every place uses, eggs were actually real and cooked on a flat top, the cheese was some non-descript version of Kraft singles that was all melty and gooey - again, exactly everything you could want out of a bagel sandwich. The coffee was Lacas brand. Never heard of it before now, but it was really good. I am, admittedly, a bit of a coffee snob. I have the good fortune to have spent quite a bit of time in Europe and I have been to Central & South America a dozen times, so I feel like I have enough worldly coffee experience to express an educated opinion: Lacas Coffee, pretty darn good. And it's self serve at The Bagel Tree, so you can personalize it however you want! Awesome The service was fine. I'm a tourist, not a regular, so I can't say whether or not it's improved or declined. There were about 8 dudes from a tree service company already in the store when I rolled in, and it took less than 6min to order, get my coffee and then walk out with my bagel. I'm not complaining. I'm really looking forward to trying other bagel shops in the area, especially ones in NY, but if I was only able to go to The Bagel Tree this trip, I wouldn't be disappointed at all. If you're ever in the area, give it a try!
