I was in town for Upland's Annual Lemon Festival and I was trying to avoid getting ripped off at Lemon Festival, but unfortunately I got ripped off at Back Abbey instead. Service was slow and inattentive the whole time, from seating to when they were around to take our order or drop off an item, they were never friendly or courteous. They seemed annoyed having to work. This location of Back Abbey in Upland is in the Colonies area, in the same plaza as Albertson, European Wax Center, and Massage Envy. When I pulled up I was genuinely happy that this location was much larger than their original Claremont location. They have tables, a bar area, and a large outdoor patio. There were many tv screens for the sports fan. I actually liked the décor and had positive hopes for this place. When I looked at their menu I was happy to see the menu grow since my last encounter with their original Claremont location. Once again, I was excited for the business and genuinely wanted to support them. I was narrowing down what to order and I even imagined coming back to try other items. My boyfriend had the Back Abbey Burger ($20) and I was mistakenly excited to see the beer cheese so I got the Soft Pretzel ($10). We also shared a Pomme Frites (half $9/full $11) and went all out with the full cause it's a better deal. My boyfriend also got a Coke ($4). I was asking the waitress about the sangria but their version doesn't have edible fruits, so I was less interested. Honestly if she was more friendly I would have gotten something else. I just got water. THE ONLY THING WE ENJOYED IS THE POMME FRITES. I remember liking these from their Claremont location. Fresh cut and super crispy as they double fry it in duck fat. Yummmm. My boyfriend said his burger was okay but he didn't like the aged gouda which affected every bite of the burger. Ugh now let me get to the pretzel. The saddest pretzel in all of the lands. I was soo excited for this... anddd COLD BEER CHEESE!! Whatttttttt??? Honestly I wanted to ask staff if it was meant to be cold but they were no were in sight. We were waiting sooooo long to wave someone down for the check. If service was faster at least I can be annoyed and leave and get over it. They were so slow it left me to stew in my annoyance of the unsatisfying depressing pretzel. Also, neither the coke or the waters were refilled. When we were FINALLY able to wave someone down, it was still a while to get the check. We also for a togo container FOR THE FRIES. She can see the majority of the pretzel was uneaten and I made it a point to say I didn't care to take it togo. Of course she didn't care to ask any follow up questions. Food being bad is one thing... I could have always came back to try the duck confit or steamed mussels like I intended but the service made me soooooooooo miserable waiting around. A friend and I were meeting up over a quick lunch. She really enjoyed her soup of the day which was chock full of sausage and flavorful broth. My salad had veggie goodness on it along with chicken. It was refreshing to have a salad with a topping such as asparagus. No drinks for us this time, although we did get a chance to take a peek in the speakeasy. We will definitely be back to check that out! Excellent service. Back Abbey is a fantastic addition to the Colonies and has quickly become one of our go-to spots for the past few years. The ambience really stands out with tall ceilings, plenty of TVs for sports, live music every week, and some great sunset views over the city that give the space a relaxed but lively vibe. The food and beer are just as good as the original Claremont location, consistently delicious, with an impressive selection of imported beers you won't find at most places. We especially love the Belgium imports. We also enjoy the seasonal burgers they come out with every few months. Everything we've had has been spot on. Service has always been solid and welcoming, making it easy to settle in and enjoy the experience. I went here for lunch with my aunt and we sat out on the patio. There was construction next door and it was very noisy inside so we opted for the lovely weather outdoors. The staff was very friendly and attentive to us and other customers. We both ordered Salads; We had the Chicken Chop Chop, the Steak Salad and Iced Tea. The salads were the perfect size and generously portioned. They make their own dressing in house and I can't say enough great things about the Sun Dried Tomato Vinaigrette! My husband and I have been to The Back Abbey in Claremont, but we recently came to the one in Upland for the first time. We came during the weekend when they have their brunch menu available. A plus for us is that they have an outdoor patio that's dog friendly. We arrived a little after 10:00am with two of our dogs. We were immediately greeted and told that we could pick any table we wanted. There's actually a very nice view from the outdoor patio. We were trying to eat a little cleaner after the holidays so we both got water and both ordered the Steak Salad ($18.00) and added avocado for an additional charge. The Steak Salad comes with grilled beef tenderloin, mixed greens, peppadew peppers, red onions, and feta cheese dressed in sun-dried tomato vinagrette. It was very good. Our server checked on us several times, refilled our waters, and asked if our dogs wanted a water bowl. They had a lot of items on their brunch menu that sounded really good so next time, I will have to try more items. read more

Four of us arrived at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 6. We were told by the hostess it was a 15-20 minute wait because the computers were down and it was slow checking guests out. No problem. Surprisingly we were seated within 10 minutes, were handed menus and then we waited 15 minutes for a server to arrive at our table to take our drink and appetizer order. 15 minutes later, our cocktails arrived. The Mary's Secret was fantastic as were the Pommes Frites with various dipping sauces we ordered an our app. Another 20 minutes passed, our cocktails were empty and the server arrived at the table again to take our order. We requested a fish and chips, three burgers and another round of cocktails. 20 minutes passed again and the fish and chips arrived; fresh, hot, large portion; delicious! Another 10 minutes passed, our second round of cocktails arrived but no one else's meal did. 20 minutes total passed since the fish and chips meal arrived when the three burgers arrived: one piping hot, juicy and great tasting, the other two burgers stone cold. We called our server back to make him aware of the cold burgers. My husband and daughter-in-law were so over it, that they declined replacement burgers. Instead I cut my burger into thirds to share and my daughter shared her fish 'n chips. 20 minutes later, our server returned with the bill in which he was kind enough to not charge for the two cold burgers, but our bill for seven cocktails, an order of fries, a burger and fish 'n chips was still $175. We requested the bill be split in half amongst two credit cards, we paid and after two hours and none of us able to enjoy a full meal, we left and stopped at a drive-thru. To add insult to injury, this morning I checked my credit card statement and instead of splitting the bill down the middle, one couple was charged $121 and the other $54. The four of us loved the food ( and on a road trip or we would have had drinks from their huge, well stocked bar). We ordered (2) Bach Abbey hamburgers with a yummy beef burger seasoned and sauce, just right, brioche buns, thick bacon and a great blend of flavors, We also had the steak with Pommes Frites was a good choice. I didn't realize the Back Abbey had a second location. Been a fan of the Claremont location for a long time and love their selection of beers. While our girls were in a vocal lesson, my wife and I happened across the Upland location, so we had to drop in! Comparing the two is tough because the Claremont location has a charm that's tough to replicate. So, I'll give my review based on the merits of this spot which is in a busy outdoor strip mall. That said, it's at a corner spot with two rollup doors for indoor/outdoor connected seating, which transforms what initially looks not as appealing upon walking up. We enjoyed sitting outside - the weather was perfect and as we enjoyed our meal some musicians showed up and added to the atmosphere with loungy standards. I had the Back Abbey Burger and a Tripel Karmeliet (on draft!). And we shared some frites - the full order is a TON of fries!!! Downsides... the salad was wilty and slightly warm. Salad should be crisp and cold. Wasn't just my plate (side salad) but also my daughter's full Cesar salad with chicken. But, considering the service was so great and all else was good, I give them a 5. I wouldn't order a salad though - hope they fix that! read more

We decided to visit today and I was so excited because she was hyping the place up but it turned out to be underwhelming. We came here on a Tuesday for trivia night with the host Allen. The place was full and lively. We ordered the Fhun dip for an appetizer. The Fhun dip today was a pizza inspired dip served along side crostini, burrata, balsamic, and tomato sauce. My toddler loved it and ate it as his meal. We order the steak medium rare, and it's perfect -- tender and delicious. The mussels are always good! However, in our opinion, this restaurant deserves 100 stars because in addition to the fine food, they also support live music and last night the Elizabeth Hangan band absolutely brought down the house. After a long 10-hour day, we decided to stop at this spot. In the past it was always "on point." We used to come here almost every month, sadly, we won't recommend this place or spend money here because of the way the below situation was handled. And just to note: we don't want any comps for food or discounts. It is what it is. I have worked in the food industry as a dishwasher, busboy, server, bartender/manager--which is why I believe that I would want to know about incidents like this, if I was an owner. The main reason for this review is so that mitigation takes place, especially since the employees don't seem to care as much anymore, or are allowing the quality of service and food to degrade. The day of our experience, there were only two other tables and not busy at all, actually empty for "happy hour," but what I will explain below may be the reason why. I noticed something that I hadn't before--customers complaining about their drinks not sent out in a timely fashion. Noticing the complaints concerned us since it was so empty, and "happy hour." There were two incidents of customers complaining the entire time we were at this spot which wasn't more than one hour, and, again, it was pretty empty, so no excuse on behalf of the servers or manager. We ordered a few drinks and some food. The food for what it was took way too long. When we got our food, one person's food at our table was not cooked as requested and another's food at was way over cooked--also not as requested. The server took too long to check up on us, it should have been immediate since the food was expedited by a third person, so it was frustrating that I would need to wave someone down when it was so empty. I asked a lady who came to check on us her opinion of what level my protein was cooked, and she gave me the response of, "what you had requested, when you ordered the food as medium well." However, the protein was way over cooked, and not a steak cooked medium well. Keep in mind my plate was over $30 dollars. The server said, "you should have said something." And I was thinking, yes, if the server would have come and checked on us. She also said, if you order it medium well it gets that way when it comes out, "because it keeps cooking." That statement is false. I know how steak continues to cook when pulled off of the grill, and when steak is well/over-cooked from the start. I had two pieces of the steak and shared another piece and the conclusion was--the steak was way over cooked, and not medium well. The problem is not that the steak was overcooked, nor was I looking to get comped for my food. Rather, the response from our server and "manager" was negative. In fact, we never spoke to the "manager," which is the disappointing part, since he seemed too busy interviewing someone. Unless the lady we spoke to was a "manager," but never introduced herself as such. What is more frustrating is that the male manager was lingering around after his interview, and we literally heard him speak to our server in regard to the overcooked food. Someone at the table heard either the manager or the server say, "well he's eating it." Again, the manager never spoke to us or tried to make it right, even after we overheard that conversation. What would have truly been effective and what would have prevented you losing some customers and getting this review, is for the server to acknowledge that the protein was over cooked and not be snarky attempting to debate with your customer about the fact that an expensive steak was or was not overcooked--rather, the customer should have been acknowledged that they were unhappy, but not argue about who is right or wrong. Again, as I mentioned before, it may not matter to the servers and managers if they don't have an interest in the company or are interested in its profitability, but I can 99.99% guarantee that the owners care about such interaction and how wrong and disappointing this is. What this transaction created was: 1. This review and telling friends about our experience; 2. Unhappy customers; 3. Losing several customers that will not recommend this spot; 4. Affecting the community we are a part of because of careless managers and servers that don't care about how guests are treated, especially since we will now go somewhere else for drinks/food. 5. Our server lost his tip and that makes us feel bad because we've been servers before. 6. Our understanding that cooks are lacking basic food temperature skills/lack care. Your business needs to find folks that have interpersonal, and management skills, as well as business etiquette. Not everyone wants to go out to get drunk. On a regular day off this may not have mattered, but we were exhausted/tired. It's irritating for employees to be so careless when customers spend good money. The prices are way too high for this type of experience. Do better. read more
