I initially scheduled a repair with a friendly woman who takes the calls. All was well, and I appreciated her help. On the day of the repair, however, I received a call from a man who identified as "Chris" on an unknown number. I asked why the number was unknown (this is a highly unprofessional practice for any business) and was told "because I don't want you to have my number". He abruptly asked then if I was going to let him in or not. Is that someone you would want in your home? After researching more, it appears that is the owner's name is also Chris, though I'm not sure if it was the same individual. There are far too many professional appliance repair companies in Chicago to tolerate this type of abysmal customer service. I recommend looking elsewhere. read more

Our landlord has some sort of contracted relationship with Appliance King, so when our freezer no longer froze food, they were called. The tech came out, opened the freezer, and instructed me to simply defrost the freezer/refrigerator, nothing else. He calls us back two days later and asks us if we defrosted it to which I confirmed that we did for just over 24 hours. He said to then do it again but for 36 hours and that he should have told me that initially (yes, he should have). Fast forward about a week and he texted me letting me know that he was 'stopping by' to which I declined. He set up another appointment for a week later, checked the temps via phone and said the appointment wasn't necessary. Now, around three weeks later, the freezer is again no longer working. If you want to be talked down to by an old lazy dude that will tell you to do the appliance version of restarting your computer, call the Appliance King! They can charge you entirely too much money for doing nothing! read more

I don't even know what to say. Broken dishwasher: made my appointment, the guy shows up, tells me what's wrong, tells me he will order the parts. A week passes. Finally, I call. The lady in charge (Leslie) tells me that the guy (Adam) has left appliance king and has taken his notes with him. No one else works on samsung dishwashers. She can't get his notes, can't tell me the parts, so I can skip the very expensive diagnosis, can't find me someone else to look at my dishwasher. She can't do anything. So now I'm a month without a dishwasher. Not a big deal, really, but the thing that kills me is that there is no oversight here, and I had to call to find out what the hell was going on. I called Appliance King based on some of the positive reviews. However, their technician has been to our house twice to fix our dryer, which after almost $500 is still not working correctly. If I had known it was going to keep adding up, we would have just purchased a new one, but each time the technician came there was suspiciously another part that needed to be replaced. I am currently attempting to get the technician to come BACK OUT (for the third time) and actually fix our dryer so that it doesn't sound like a military tank mowing our house down when we turn it on. When I called again this morning (since they have not returned my calls as promised), the operator rudely told me "I am only here one day a week. I can't help you." My landlord placed an emergency call to fix a refrigerator yesterday. Technician was told it was probably the control panel, as this had been a problem previously, yet he did not bring the part with him when he came in. After determining that the problem was, in fact the control panel, the technician left and said that he will be calling the landlord with the price, after which he will be back with the part. He never did make the call that day nor the next. I called the main number and the customer service was very rude refusing to let me know why their technician did not get in touch with the landlord, nor offered any other explanation for what had happened. As a real estate broker and a landlord myself, I have never encountered such unprofessional if not abysmal service, having contracted with many home service companies in Chicago. This company is definitely off my and my colleagues' list for future business. read more

Because ovens are engineered to break right before Thanksgiving, I was worried when mine started spewing gas I wouldn't be able to get it fixed before I had 15 people over to eat turkey, preferably cooked to 165 degrees. After a terrible experience at JP Appliance, I turned to yelp and a friend's recommendation, and on Monday before Thanksgiving, they agreed to come out the day before Turkey Day. Unlike a previous reviewer, I had no problem reaching the office, both when I made my appointment, and to confirm the time two days later. While the tech was late, when he showed up, Sal (a self-proclaimed "pawn" to the Appliance King) was friendly, knowledgeable, and liked my dog (it weirds me out when techs don't love my tiny). Clearly been working on appliances for decades, he had no problems fixing what JP Appliance couldn't fix, reconnecting the gas line and replaced the ignitor. Sal answered all my partner's unnecessary questions, fixed everything, checked it, and gave us lots of helpful advice and feedback. He also checked our microwave and the rest of the oven for free. He honored the Yelp 10% discount, and charged us HALF of what JP Appliance wanted. Thanksgiving was saved, and Appliance King's magnet is a permanent addition to our fridge for the next time we need it! read more

Quick, friendly, and helpful service. He took a look at our leaky washing machine, a Whirlpool Cabrio, and immediately said he sees a lot of these and that a lot of people have problems with them. He was clearly quite knowledgeable. Ultimately he suggested that we continue to use it as long as we can and then replace it rather than paying him hundreds in labor time to take the whole thing apart and replace the tub seal. Then he offered to take a quick peek in our kitchen and give free suggestions about our dishwasher, refrigerator, and stove. He was very helpful and I would definitely use them again. read more

Our gas dryer stopped working on a Saturday night, so I called the big appliance store (where we'd purchased it nine years ago) on Sunday morning to arrange a repair. They were very pleasant, but could not "squeeze us in" for at least eight days. Following a Yelp search, I called the Appliance King, expecting to get voicemail on Sunday. Instead, the owner answered the phone, and we arranged an appointment for the very next day between 2:00 and 4:00. He arrived fifteen minutes early and diagnosed the problem literally within 30 seconds. He made a quick run for a part and fixed the problem within an hour, for about $100 less than I expected to pay the appliance store. The washing machine agitator didn't turn on after the tub filled with water. The technician repaired the agitator and the machine is working fine now. I own two apartment buildings and this is the third time I've used Appliance King in the last six months. They always have a technician come out in a day or two. The repairmen show up at the appointed time, find the problem and fix it without having to come back. If the appliance is old they'll tell me if it's better to buy a new one instead of wasting money on repairs. I appreciate their honesty and I know I can depend on them. read more

Requested for an inspection for a washer because we were worried about a low water level. We expected an inspection beyond what we could do: running the washer and check the water level. BUT He just ran the washer and checked a water level and says it works fine. No opening or checks on the hoses or any parts. Just saying that this is the way the machine is. No how and why was explicated. On top of that, 1. Unprofessional. Showed up more than an hour late without any notification. 2. Rude. Cut what i was saying multiple times when i tried to explain our concern. Simply did not communicate. Instead, asked inappropriate questions and made inappropriate comments. 3. Again, Unprofessional. When talking to another person, delivered unnecessary information. His job was delivering the result and made suggestions if necessary. But said whatever he wanted to say other than what he was supposed to do. read more

I' v read all the good reviews and called them to get my oven fixed. I also chose them because their website claimed " if it's not fixed you are not paying for it " . Fair right? I should have gotten a hint when I called and mentioned that statement , the women on the phone was completely surprised . Any ways, the guy showed up, spent 20 min unscrewing 4 screws from the back inside wall of my oven, then showed me that the heating element is not attached to the wire . OK that's a surprise cause all the simptoms were indicating that one of the electric controllers is off - oven would turn on at one time but won't the next day . Any way , then the guy proceeds to let me know he can't fix it cause - wait for it - he can't pull my stove off the wall to get behind it . So he suggests I should get somebody to pull it out and have my husband to fix it since its so easy ! Then he proceeds to collect his service call charge of 50$ plus 20$ for 30 min work- they charge per hour. He gratuitously accepts yelp coupon and leaves. Wow. So I call ABt - and that was the first time I saw people who knew what they were doing . It turned out the Appliance King guy broke that wire while messing with my heating element . When ABT reattached it (which took them like 5 min )the oven still wasn't working . It was one of the electronic controllers that they replaced that was a problem . Bottom line - the King people are incompetent , engage in false advertisement and not even aware of it , come unprepared ( didn't ask model number or if they need more then one person?)and charge for services they did not perform but for your time they wasted. They did take that statement off of their website now, so you can be sure you Will be charged regardless of the results. read more

I'm not sure now, I may be being harsh, but three weeks to fix the goddamn disposal. I found some other guy need it for much cheaper pretty quickly. I called because my oven wouldn't light and a after a little Internet "research" I discovered it was probably cheaper and better not to try to fix it myself. I called Appliance King because of the good reviews and their awesome retro name. The technician looked at it for about thirty seconds and said $199 installed. Well, that sounded pretty good to me. I like it when I'm told upfront the total. Anyway the super nice repair guy had to go out to his truck to get a part. It seemed like he was gone a while. Turns out he and my neighbor rescued a dog that was running in traffic, then returned it to his owner. My stove works perfectly. A dog is saved. And he left my kitchen cleaner than he found it. I used them a few months ago to fix my oven. They came out, on time, and did a great job. I was very happy! So...when my washing machine decided to start leaking, I called them right away. Since it was after hours, it went into voice mail. I left a detailed message, including my contact info, but also made an appointment request online. Nada. So the next day I made another online request, as well as leaving THREE additional messages, requesting someone to come out. I have YET to receive a call back. Forget it! I'd rate it zero stars (you can't get a star if you don't even return a call/email!) but the system doesn't let you do that. read more

Great service! My 10-yr-old fridge stopped working, thought I might need to buy a new one ($1000+ - yikes) after my lame DIY attempts to fix it. Finally made an appointment with Appliance King, technician (Steve) showed up on time and was courteous and very helpful. He quickly assessed the situation, explained in detail what the problem was (a blown-out defrost heater in the freezer), replaced the part ($40) and my fridge was up and running again within a few hours. Our Samsung freezer stopped working over the weekend. According to service people I had used before, had to get a specialized Samsung certified repair person. Called a couple off those. With one, had to pay to get an appointment. The other was booked until Thursday. Then I called The Appliance King. Yes, their people knew how to fix Samsung appliances. They could also take a look at my Electrolux range while they were there to see why the self cleaning function wouldn't work. They couldn't make it out that day (Monday) -- would Tuesday be okay? The repairman was early, for which he apologized. Really nice, courteous, professional person. Got the freezer working in short order. Told me my display panel wasn't working right and did I want to replace it. Then diagnosed the range problem, but needed a part to fix it. And then he said goodbye. That someone would call me as soon as they got the part. When I asked about a bill, he said that since there was going to be more work, they wouldn't bill until it was all done. Even though he had completely fixed the original problem I called them on. Came back and got the oven to self clean again. Told me that if it happened again, he could make a "modification" to how the oven racks worked that would prevent it from being able to happen. And presented me with a bill that, in total, was less than other people said they had to pay just to get the oven to self-clean. Office staff also helpful, friendly, professional. I was nervous about the potential of bad news about my broken refrigerator not to mention the potential of plumbers crack in my kitchen. This was the best fix it experience ever. Chris was going to be late so I got a call that allowed me to take care of an errand rather than wait. I got back and he arrived just a few minutes later. He was neat and organized. We found some mouse droppings EEK! While I vacuumed that horror he called my landlord with the update. He installed the part - HE HAD ON HAND - what! Within what seemed like minutes he had me chillin' some beers in my beloved fridge. He even noticed a clicking sound the stove has always made, told me it isn't anything to worry about. Fix it if there is ever a service call on the stove. I don't know that I will go ahead and at the smoked salmon that rested at 60 odd degrees for at least 24 hours. He seemed to think it would be okay. Perhaps The Appliance King could send over the court taster. I will definitely call The King again. The price was soooo right and the response time excellent. To my VERY pleasant surprise, I received a call Friday morning and a repair technician was at my house a few hours later and well within the time quoted. I was like another reviewer in that my Kenmore washer stopped and I promptly contacted Sears. They charge $129 just to walk through the door not including parts or labor. Also, they couldn't come for 3 days. I checked yelp and found The Appliance King had a very high rating. I called and scheduled the appointment for the next morning. When Chris arrived, he diagnosed the problem immediately and gave me a price quote. He fixed it very quickly. I was told when I made the appointment that the service charge was $49. I thought that the quote Chris gave me was in addition to the service fee. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that was the entire charge which wass a fraction of what Sears charges. The first call to The Appliance King promised that they would be out the next day. And a repair technician was. That's when the REAL problems started. The same technician was out 2 more times to address water shooting out of my front loader washer, and it spins louder than a Jet taking off from O'Hare. Called again and was promised that they would call back to come back out. That was 6 days ago. Just got off the phone (I made the call) with a rude, and condescending, and most unhelpful arrogant spokes person. Denies that the new problems were created since the repair technician was out to 'fix the problem'. Denied that the original reason for calling is now NOT the same reason that I am calling. Argued over my statements and efforts to provide information. Has no intention of having someone come out because the 'problems doesn't happen when the tech is out'. I have water shooting out of the front of the washer! Do you really think that someone makes that up? THAT IS WHAT YOU WERE CALLED OUT TO REPAIR in the first place. This was a gut wrenching nightmare of customer service that starts with the front desk person who answers the phone. It was overly expensive and what I got was a bonus problem in addition to the one that was never fixed. See the review of 11/302012 below.....it reads almost exactly the same! BEWARE! Wow, worst repair service experience in my live. I waited 5 days for the "technician" to show up to fix my frozen dishwasher, and when he did he refused to fix it. His hands were shaking badly, like an alcoholic who needed a drink. He yelled at my wife, scared my kids, and yelled at me over the phone. Finally I asked him if he had even looked at the dishwasher, he said he didn't, slammed down the phone and walked out. I was honestly scared for the safety of my family. read more

Called midway through to get an update and "he was just around the corner." Never showed up. Called 20 minutes past appointment and was told driver didn't update his schedule - its all computerized - and they can't get someone out until tomorrow.
