Amazing beer selection, average food. Tried to order pad Thai but they were out of noodles. Settled for the bacon fried rice. Rice came out really hot which was good, but was way too salty and the egg was overcooked. Ran through a few great beers though, everything from a couple of IPAs, to some sours and finished with an amazing Blanton's barrel aged stout. I'd give this place a 5 for beers and a 3 for the food. Solid 4 overall.
Excellent food, friendly staff, chill vibes! They also have a nice, large outside seating area which is a huge plus. The couches are very comfortable! I wished it wasn't as buggy. Even after using the bug spray provided outside, I was getting attacked so we went back inside. H enjoyed the brown ale and I enjoyed sampling a few beers in a flight. I really liked the bock, the Stooby watermelon, and the blueberry mango fruit beer. The beertenders are friendly and helpful. We ordered food here which was fantastic!! Their prices are so reasonable for such good food, I almost couldn't believe it. I got the Bánh mì chicken sandwich and H got the drunken noodles with chicken. Both were excellent and great size portions. I liked the arcade games and played Ms. Pac Man. Overall, this is a great place we would return to!
This brewery was recommended to me specifically by a friend, so I wanted to check it out while I was visiting Richmond recently. The venue is very cool, and the staff is super friendly. I went with the flight option as I wanted to try a variety of beers and they were all new to me. I liked their themed flight pamphlets, where I wrote my selections down. When the beers were brought out, the pamphlet had been flattened, and the beers occupied the other 2/3rds of the paper...I'm not describing it well, but it was cool, lol! Unfortunately, I didn't choose the best beers and I tried chugging one of them which was an epically bad idea. It turned my stomach and I wasn't able to finish my entire flight. Otherwise, I liked The Answer a lot. Perhaps I would try samples of beer before ordering a flight...though that defeats the purpose.
TL;DR: Go for the drinks, not the food or service. I wouldn't return due to the staff's lack of accountability for the service issues. Service (1/5): We were seated against the wall with our party of seven and told there was no table service and we had to order at the bar. When you order food, you're given a small table number, and the food is brought out to you. However, the table number remains on the table, which caused confusion. Eventually, five of us received our food, but one order was incorrect. Our friend had ordered a pork belly dish, but although one bartender said they were out of pork belly, the bartender who took the order still rang it up as available. He received a pork dish, but it was not pork belly. After 1.5 hours, two people at our table still hadn't received their meals. When they went to ask what was going on, it turned out the bartender had entered the wrong table number and didn't bother to come over to clarify or fix the issue. The kitchen had to rush the two meals, which came out scalding hot. When we asked the person who brought the food what had happened, they simply said, "I just bring food." Food (1/5): The Grilled Chicken Bánh Mì ($12) was dry and oddly tasted like dog breath. The only decent parts were the carrot slices and the fries. Overall, food temperatures were inconsistent. Some dishes came out cold, others were too hot to eat. Drinks (5/5): They have an impressive selection of sours and beers. We got a flight of four 5oz sours for $14 and each one was fantastic. The Beescake mead was especially good ($5 for a 5oz pour / $10 for 10oz). The beer service was the only part that worked well... probably because they pour it right in front of you instead of forgetting to bring it altogether. Ambiance (2/5): The place feels like an old Mexican restaurant converted into a brewery. There's a sad pay-to-play arcade in the back, and the acoustics are rough... sound carries, so expect to yell across the table. On the plus side, there's plenty of parking behind the building.
This is the local pub you want to visit. From the small town feel, large draft selection, and phenomenally cooked meals, you can't go wrong with this place. And, it has a "mug club," that gets you a personalized beer mug, and early access to any new drafts. It's a win/win!
If you're looking for an amazing beer selection the answer is the place to go! There are so many unique beers here there's bound to be one you love. If you can't make up your mind then a flight is the way to go, with generous pours of 4 beers. There is ample indoor and outdoor seating. The food however isn't the best in my opinion. It's good but not the reason for coming to the answer. They do have a large menu with a lot of different options. I ordered the drunken noodles with tofu and the tofu was inedible unfortunately. The noodles did have a good flavor but was just missing something. The crispy spring rolls were great would definitely recommend them! There is plenty of parking and this is a great place for groups! Definitely check the answer out if you or someone you know is a beer lover!
I don't understand why this place isn't talked about more often. It's a hidden gem in Richmond. The food and The beers are delish! I love that they have so many variety of fruity beers. As for food, I've tried almost everything at this point and everything is amazing. I love that they make home made bread for their banh mi and home made ranch. My only complaint is that the pickles in bahn mi could be more picked and they could add more to the sandwich
The Answer is my absolute favorite brewery I have ever been to. Their beers are incredible. Whatever they do, they do extraordinarily well. Get the $15 flight and try a few different. They are best known for their Joose beer (fruited sours, many are almost like fruit smoothies), but I'm a stout drinker and I love them there. I generally go with one of their IPAs, 2 sours and a stout for my flight. They also have insane guest taps. Beers you will not find anywhere else around here. If you are a beer nerd, this is your spot. Also all their food is solid. I LOVE their lamb curry bowl. I live about an hour away, but anytime I am driving anywhere near The Answer and I can possible stop I do.
I've been so excited to write this review ever since taking my first sip of beer. What a find - seriously, such a unique venue that somehow pulls off being an Asian-food restaurant, clean + modern yet still divey-like bar, event space, etc. They are the gold standard for sours and stouts in-town, at least from my experiences thus far. Their drink menu is so incredibly vast and chock-full of some really unique flavors - which made even choosing four beers nearly impossible because I wanted to try them all. Ultimately went with the Sydney's Latte Stout (apparently named after our wonderful server), Incognito Bowser Stout, Rum Lychee Painkiller Sour (an instant favorite), and Passionfruit Lemonade Mango Sour - all of which were AMAZING. If only money wasn't an obstacle, I would have brought all of them home in growlers afterwards. I've written this much and haven't even gotten to the food - ever had pretzel bites and banh mi in the same meal? Sounds strange - because it was - but in the best of ways. I can't say enough about the quality of everything we ate here - the pretzel bites, aside from being a generous sharable portion, had the heartiest side of dipping cheese that I literally took a spoon to after the pretzels were gone. The pork belly Banh Mi was also a total surprise - bread was just the right amount of fluff, pork just the right amount of crisp, and of course the side of fries was just the right amount of crunch. Easy parking in the back too. My cousin is a beer savant - and despite living in Ohio, almost 7+ hours away, he told me to check this place out because even he had heard of its lore. Believe me when I say - it's officially my favorite spot in Richmond and I am not just saying that to hyperbolize. It's true and you NEED to try it immediately!
The Answer Brewpub was amazing. Great selection of beers with fun flavors and their burgers and sandwiches are top shelf. Definitely a place not to be missed when in Richmond.
Best stouts and fruited sours in the country. Staff is extremely nice and helpful and around 50 beers nice tap, but let's face it your coming for those pastry stouts and jooses. A nice touch of giving you a water glass and keeping it full while drinking. Really cleanses your pallet between all those flights. I ordered the pork belly bahn mi which was prob the best I ever had. Delicious meat, crispy pickled veggies and that cilantro . Fries were ok on side but the dipping sauces were great. Pot stickers were cooked perfect and def would order again. One of best bar experiences I have ever been to. read more

Hidden gem, from the road it looks like you are turning into a warehouse. Ample parking around the back, walk in the back next to the deck to be greeted by a hostess. Big space with indoor and outdoor seating. Appetizers and burgers/sandwiches with a Vietnamese flare are available. Jolly, pleasant staff, music and over 35 beers on draft. Their plethora of sours was my initial draw. Thick joose, these sours are like smoothies. I had pork spring rolls (2) and pork dumplings (5-6) to eat. Both authentic, served with dipping sauces and arrived warm and crispy. Stop in, take a minute and enjoy some adult Joose. Will be back! read more

5 stars for the beer and 3 stars for the food! If you're into stouts or fruity beers, this is the place to go to! The best stouts I've every had. The smoothest! The richest! The chocolatiest! The strawberry rhubarb gose was fantastic. Full bodied flavors all around! The Vietnamese food, on the other hand, was not the best. Portions were huge as you can see in the pictures but gargantuan chunks of roast pork and sausage were so big, they turned out to be too dry. Maybe i'm spoiled by the Eden Center in Falls Church, VA but the fish sauce tasted more like chinese takeout duck sauce. I'll just say, it was not authentic. The fries really saved the meal though. A nice battered crunch but soft on the inside. read more
Busy brewpub with a vast selection. Went in and filled out the form to get some flights of beer. On the flights tried out fruit and IPA selections. Everything was good. Staff was polite and ready to help. Food is came out quickly and made to order. Plenty of parking out in the back indoor and outdoor seating. Nice place with a good atmosphere. read more
This is a cute spot that is attached to a Vietnamese restaurant. We came here to try their beer flights and although not a big fan of beer I didn't enjoy their smoothie like textures of some of their beers. The food wasn't bad it was typical barfood and nothing amazing I enjoyed the fried rice with bacon and egg and the animal fries. read more

BEST! Blue Hawaiian Waken bacon Dumpling with The Sauce Burger Not usually compelled enough to write a review but this place was a good find. Travelled from out of town and almost didn't go in because of the front. Go around to the back for the entrance! Good find. Our waiter Travis was super nice and generous! read more
First, I need you to ask yourself have you ever heard or experienced a Vietnamese brewery with a stage for live performance? If not, the question is "why not?" and clearly...this place is "The Answer!". I was in town on business and was assigned dinner/drinks duty, so naturally I chose a Vietnamese Brewery. My choice was met with hesitation and judgement, literally all the way until we hit the door and walked in! When you pull up to this place, you are directed around back for main entry. Here you are met with a decently shady entrance consisting of a few concrete steps, a dirty awning and a chalkboard sign. Once you get past this, you are rewarded with an open floor plan filled with a bar, dining area, performance stage and an arcade area! This is certainly one of those places that you find yourself thankful that you didn't judge a book by its cover. Once inside, the staff is super helpful, attentive and knowledgeable. In addition to the local beers they had to serve, they offered some pretty tasty food! I was drawn in by the Vietnamese sandwiches! Most of the people in my group got the "Wake N Bacon" which was a rice dish served with fried rice, pork belly topped with a sunny side up egg! I, ended up with the Dac Biet sandwich which consisted of roasted pork, chicken and fish sausage all topped with traditional Vietnamese toppings sided with salt and pepper fries. Overall, this place was wonderful. We were all pleasantly surprised at this place! If I was from and lived in this area, I would be a certain frequent patron of this place! I can only leave you with this...Do not judge a place by its exterior. It may hold one of the best experiences you have had in ages. read more

I rarely drink it, but I do like beer. Stopped in w/ a friend this past weekend and tried several and man are they good! And they have the best names for them, hands down! "Cash Me Outside, How Bow Dah," and "Haun Solo." C'mon, man! Also got the Com Chicken to eat. The rice needed lots of salt, but otherwise, it was good bar food. Relaxed atmosphere. Good service. Decent prices. Warning: don't expect to get the same food as you get from Mekong. Very little of it is the same. read more

So all the typical stuff out the way 1st; parking is plentiful in the rear, location is casual, low key and relaxed. Fully Hipster approved(though I'm not one) with a stage for li. Now the good stuff; the beer is MAGNIFICENT. I am not a beer aficionado by ANY means. I only drink what tastes good to me. This place is ARTISAN level here and their menu features their skill throughout. So many different types of in house crafted beer with fresh fruit and herbs infused, flavors I've never thought of, and different types at that from stouts to wheats and more. DRINK ALL THE ANDALLS...ALL of THEM. I had a flight with four different beers on it and then had more after. Something for everyone's taste. And the food...the FOOD!!! This is not pub food; it's not even cheap chain restaurant food, this food could EASILY be the feature. Vietnamese themed and EVERYTHING.WAS.DELICIOUS. Fresh, hot, flavorful and quality ingredients. Just look at the pics and see for yourself. I got the low down from a friend hat brought me. The owner also owns the restaurant that shares the same building called Mekong. (I ate there too right after leaving here lol) So The Answer would be good to just stop through for appetizers, to make the dinner location, just to have some drinks, whatever. Just go here and eat and drink. Now. read more

This is a MUST-DO! if you're ever in the Richmond area. It's one of my favorite places for beer. Where else can you get a well-curated selection of quality beer with legit VIETNAMESE food to eat. What a dream. Wash down your scrumptious banh mi with your favorite brewski. The owner is named An Bui (hence: AN-swer; check out his cardboard cut out in the front of the pub) and his family owns the Vietnamese Mekong Restaurant next door. He later opened this brew pub -- and what a great idea it is. Love the stage area with string lights, main dining space, as well as the back bar. There are also foosball tables and other games like giant jenga to play with friends for a long, friendly hang out! Flights are $12; add on a dollar to get some goldfish. My friends and I ordered a round of sour beers (regular glasses) and a stout, which was SO delicious... we were raving about it for the entirety of our trip in Richmond. We also ordered the Bun Chicken Noodle Bowl, a generous portion of chicken, veggies (cucumber, lettuce, bean sprouts, carrot) served with noodles and crispy spring rolls on the side. it was very filling and deeelicious! gosh I wish I could go back every weekend, but I live about an hour or two away! read more
Looking for great food, an endless list of beer choices and possible live music...... we have the ANSWER!!! Stop by the Answer Brewpub in Richmond for a great night out with the guys, your girls or for a fun date. Beer lovers will enjoy a good Stout or IPA and non beer lovers will find an unusual frozen or fruity beer that they will like, love or tolerate for the night. The cuisine is Vietnamese which has an acquired taste, great for those that like it hot. There is also an added breakfast like component to most dishes, which I loved. I truly enjoyed my food. The menu is limited so leave the kids at home and enjoy an adult night. read more

Not sure what the question is, but the Answer is great. Ladyfriend and I had lunch and a beer flight there. Were wowed. Literally wowed. This place is quite big, tons of seating and space. Tons of parking. Extensive number of beers on tap, surprising number of them made in house. Food: we had the spring rolls, perfectly fine ($6), I had the "An"imal Burger (big ol' burger with pulled pork and dripping with beer cheese, not great for my cholesterol but great for my tastebuds, $13), ladyfriend had the Wake n' Bacon ($10, fried rice with bacon and egg). Readers, know this about me - I am an eater. I pack away food. And yet I had leftover burger and fries. This was an impressive amount of grub. And let me tell you about the beers. Flight of four ($14, generous 5 oz. pours). Dark beer fans, we got the King Kahuna imperial coconut stout (really good), Ginger Touch'd stout (with carmelized ginger, also really good), Play Among the Stars and Swiss Macademia. Next time am back in Richmond, this is a must-stop. Highly worthwhile. read more

The Answer has become the "Mecca" of beer on the East Coast. Many people travel from all over just to get beer, glasses, and food from The Answer. Lucky for me, it is right in my backyard. I take it for granted however it really is delicious. From the wings, to the fries, to the steamed buns, wake-n-bacon, and even the dumplings. They are all unique and super good eats. The thing that makes people stay however is the beer. They have at least 30 rotating taps from other breweries and at least 20 of their own beers on tap. I always get a flight of their own beers because it is just hard to beat it (4 for 12$). Their "jooses" are like a dessert in a glass. Fruit forward and some are very thick! The staff are amazing, knowledgable and bust their ass to keep this place booming. read more
My second time here because I love the joose!! If I lived in Richmond, I would come here every week for the Joose. Im not a fan of beer normally, only the light ones, but the fruit beers are delicious. I do not know how they do it. FLIGHT: (I apologize, I do not remember the exact names, just the flavors) Cinnamon toast crunch- a light fireball flavor with a strong coffee base, it was a bit strong Strawberry Guava-there was not a strong strawberry or guava flavor, just a pleasant fruity flavor Mango & Pineapple Popsicle- if i remember correctly, this one had a consistency of a smoothie and was a bit sour, but still really yummy There was another fruit beer with white chocolate that I cannot remember the name of (shouldve taken a picture of the paper), but that was my favorite fruit beer. We also ordered a light beer that reminded me of blue moon. If you come here, order the fruit beers! You will not be disappointed, some are more sour than others, but still tasty. FOOD: *April Viar Tofu* Just your basic tofu stiry fry with a sweet sauce, can't go wrong. Although I personally like the broccoli to be cook longer because I like it soft. I shouldve asked the waitress if this was possible, but its okay I was more focused on the fruit beer. *Yin/Yang* I would skip this noodle soup. It was very oily and did not have a strong taste? Ive had a lot of vietnamese food and I did not recognize this spice in the soup. It reminded me of peppercorn that is used in chinese malaa dishes. Either way, this noodle soup was not good and only came with one piece of pork. *Tofu Banh Mi* I tried this my first time here a couple of months ago. It was my first banh mi and it was tasty. I dont think you can mess a banh mi up. Overall, I would come here again for the fruit beers!! read more

Just okay We came around 830 on a Friday night, so I expected it to be pretty busy. So for a party of 6, there was about a 15 minute wait. Or so they said. Whatever. No big deal. We decided to go grab a drink at the bar and play one of their various games they had. After playing Pacman for about 40 minutes, we got a text that our table was ready. The music is rather loud but we didn't mind it. They have a huge beer selection here. So there is always something for everyone. About 5 minutes after being seated our waitress came to us and got our drink orders. The menu here is like Vietnamese bar food. Mainly sandwiches and some soup and noodle bowls. I ordered the 5 spice pork bao sliders (Chinese style bun). The rest of the table got some variation of their banhmi sandwiches. The bao buns were nice and soft, and the pork was tender. It was a little under seasoned but was good when dipped in the sauce. Only complaint is that it didn't come with fries or anything unlike the banhmi. The banhmi sandwiches were very good though. One of my friends ordered the hangover which is a banhmi that comes with 2 eggs. It looked delicious and she said it is her go to when she comes here. Next time I'll be sure to order that one. read more

I love this place. I first heard about this place from my friend, who he claims is his favorite pub/ brewery. I had to try it out. And boy, he was right. It's basically a huge space, with two bars and a ton of tables. You also have games that's up on a shelf, as well as a pac man and pinball machine. The beer list is extensive. This place brews their own beer, and has a huge selection of drafts. When my friend first said he loved the sour beers, I was initially put off thinking it was close to like a really sour saison, but no it is a bit sour, but overall very fruity and flavorful. The IPAs are great, and their stouts area unlike anything I've tasted, full of flavor, sweetness, and also thick! Get the flight to sample 4 at once! You can also ask for a little smaller sample if you'd rather settle on one The food is awesome banging! It's Vietnamese inspired. You get a lot for your buck. My hubs and I got the banh mi and we had a hard time finishing because there was so much! The wait can be a pain especially during meal hours. The great thing is the two bars usually got some seats available! Regardless, this is definitely my staple and to go place from now on read more

I should have read Timmy T's review sooner! The parking situation is in the rear with plenty of space. I'll have to remember that for next time. Sarah and I met some friends for lunch on a beautiful Sunday - fellow *Yelp Elite* David J. and his lovely wife Jackie. We came here for the food, but I mean, how could not order just a small flight of craft beer? Having gone all out the day before Sarah and I decided to take it easy and share a flight. Quick rundown: -- #39 Larceny (Triple Dry Hopped) IPA - American -- #42 #alternativehops IPA - Imperial / Double American -- Kromer Juice w/ Raspberry (Andall) Sour - Gose -- Mango Guava Popsicle Sour - Gose Both the Magno/Guava and Raspberry Gose were spectacular! I even liked their Triple Dry Hopped Larceny. But enough about beer, let's get to the food. Not for nothing but I thought the food was fantastic. We started with the house made beef jerky (forgot to take a pic) which was a sleeper. After that we got down to business. I went with the traditional five spice roasted pork Bánh Mì sandwich. Sarah had the Đac Biêt (just means Special), David had a bowl of Pho, and Jackie rounded out the posse with the bun chicken noodle bowl. I like to be extra all the time so I'm hoping all the diacritical marks I'm using stay formatted when I post this. I liked everything I ate. I wiped out that Bánh Mì sandwich. I'm surprised I finished it considering how much yacking I was doing. We must have been there over an hour just laughing and catching up. It was a great time with great people. The wait staff are super friendly and I know I'll be headed back here real soon. read more

DH and I have been meaning to come here for ages. The brewmaster is the son-in-law of DH's old Navy buddy. So on Friday Night Date Night we did. Now we are smacking ourselves in the head wondering what took us so long. There are (what seems like) about 100 craft beers from which to choose with often hilarious names like "Cash Me Ousside How Bout Dah" (a stout). Some in house. Some guest brews. At the time of year, there seem to be a lot of stouts on the menu right now. I tend to go for a lighter brew. For food, we started off with a big basket of shrimp chips (so addictive). For our meals, DH ordered the bahn mi sandwich with fries. I had the bao pork sliders. DH *loved* his sandwich, right down to the perfect bread on which it was served. I really enjoyed my sliders, too. The bao bun was steamed with a light and fluffy texture. The pork was delicious and piled high along with crisp vegetables of cucumber, carrot, and daikon. A nice mix of textures and tastes. The place is huge, a bit loud (good music) and full of folks have a great time. Even with a crowd, service was fast and helpful. If it is your first trip, remember parking and the entrance are around back! read more
The Answer Brewpub is so fun! Okay, I'm not actually jumping for joy every time I walk into the joint BUT I have so much fun trying all the different flavored beers they have. Most of the beers are sweet and heavy so I wouldn't come here to get your buzz on but this is a great place to come when you're searching for an authentic Richmond experience. You can't really find goses or sours like this anywhere else. Great work! read more

Do they have board games?
I think so, but can't say with confidence. They do have other games, like an air hockey table, giant jenga, etc.
