Ooh, what a cool spot! Two of us visited here this past weekend as were in the area, and we really enjoyed our dinner. To find the entrance, it's nice to to have Mekong as a landmark and then you drive around the back for parking and the main entrance. It is next to the outdoor patio. Upon walking in, we were surprised at the shear size of the indoor space. There was so much area, and the tables were placed rather far apart from each other. It was relatively full, but that's mainly because even with so much floor space, the number of tables was low. There was also a stage which was unexpected; I would be interested to find out what it is used for.
We were taken to a table near the entrance to the outdoor patio which had bench seating against a wall and then was missing one chair. There was a large birthday party next to us that clearly put tables and chairs together; we had to wait only about a minute before the hostess got us a chair. I was a little surprised, though, that we couldn't have sat at another larger table; I find that tables meant for two are always too small when you end up ordering food and drinks and have condiments. For a place like this, where getting beer is pretty much expected plus water, the table was tight when our order came out. I really wished we were given a larger table, even if it was supposed to be for four people.
Our waiter was hip and friendly. We ended up ordering steamed pork dumplings, chicken banh mi, brussel sprouts and noodles, fried rice with pho broth, and one beer flight. It was a large amount of food for the two of us. To be fair, the waiter warned us strongly about how large the brussel sprouts entree would be, but we wanted it anyway and were prepared to box leftovers. The pork dumplings were great because the outside dough was thick enough to not fall apart, and there was a good amount of filling. The dipping sauce was tasty too, and the portion was perfect to share for 2-3 people. My banh mi was way too large to be eaten daintily, but the flavor was great. It had the traditional components of the sandwich, and I appreciated how soft and buttery the bread was! Finally, a baguette whose mission wasn't to be so crunchy to break my mouth. I will say that I wished the chicken meat was of a little higher quality. I ate about half of the sandwich and the majority of the salt and pepper fries. They were DIVINE. They had the best kind of crisp! The dish's two sauces were great accompaniments too. The fried rice with pho broth was a different kind of dish, but in a good way. The fried rice was rather bland, but the pho broth was the exact opposite and was bursting with flavor! It was kind of a good pairing, actually. Plus, some of my baguette when dipped into the broth was the ultimate pairing.
We were actually so full, that we didn't eat the brussel sprouts dish until two days later. Unfortunately, it was very bland, the noodles themselves were oddly sweet, and the garlic sauce was lacking in depth. I would not order this dish again. While the vegetables were cooked very well, it just wasn't flavorful enough. It is too bad that a vegetarian dish like this one could be so down in flavor.
Okay, now on to the beer. The presentation of the glasses was nice, but as I alluded to earlier, it made our table crowded with all of our food plates. Anyway, I love darker beers, so we went all in on four super dark ones in the flight. I am talking ABVs in the range of 8% to 16%. I will tell you what, those higher ABV ones shouldn't even be considered beers! They were so syrupy sweet that they were rendered distasteful and unenjoyable. It was a pain to drink them. To be clear, these ones were the barrel aged cinnamon toast crunch and the bourbon barrel aged fluffy banana flambe. The other two were only slightly better, but I still would not order them again - Bill better have my money and the double barrel mother of coconut. We totally understood the descriptions, but overall, these beers tasted like raw molasses and only smelled like the flavors mentioned in print. At one point, I was like "I want this coconut one as a candle!" It made sense that the lowest ABV one was the most tolerable (Bill). Also, the one we wanted originally, the diablo, was out of stock, but maybe it was a blessing in disguise.
The beer menu does have a decent list of other options, so hopefully those fare better on my next visit. Unfortunately, we were drinking a lot of water to help wash our beers down this time, but our glasses didn't get refilled once during our visit.
Bottom line: Most of the food very clearly outshined the beer. read more
