Charleston is a cute town. Was looking for a non chain hotel to have a great weekend and we found this place in hotels. Com. It has a great location. Only 10 minute walk from the hub of downtown Charleston. There is also a grocery store literally across the street so you can get some snacks with a 3 minute walk. They have a parking lot which is nice, spacious and... Well it's empty. We will get to this later. Walked in to check in and I noticed a resounding theme, folks calling to contest their bill. I stood for 10 minutes while the lady on the phone went over line item after line item for this person. After the call got to check in and she asked if we parked, told her yes and she said it's $35 a night. Pardon me? For your empty parking lot is 35 a night? I see why it's empty, they're extorting money from you. There no security guard. No camera. No gate. But bet your buns they charge premium rates. The room was right next to the main street, which was not ideal for the insecure people with loud mufflers or motorcycles. But the room? Very cute. Decorated well. Comfy bed. Nice shower but one thing lacking was counter space or shelves. Made it importable to use the sink the area was so small. They have a bar on hand and they have a signature cocktail that was pretty good, and I don't like drinking. It's a nice little bar and there's an overflow long table below for a group. The price: it isn't cheap. But normally when you charge an arm and a leg you get parking or maybe a restaurant on site. But nah, they just have a cute hotel in a good location. I probably wouldn't stay here again mostly because of the parking. I have status with all three chains and in the event they charge for parking, it's comped. read more

We had reservations for three nights at The Ansonborough Hotel in Charleston, SC, but canceled after one of the most disappointing customer service experiences we've ever encountered. We called 24 hours ahead of the cancellation deadline to ask for a small extension - simply one extra day to determine if travel would be possible. I recently had cancer removal surgery and was waiting for my doctor's clearance to travel. The woman we spoke with said she'd check with her manager and have them call us back. No one ever called. When we followed up the next day, we spoke with Carrie at the front desk. She had no record of our prior call or request and immediately told us to contact Expedia, which made no sense since we were asking about the hotel's own cancellation policy. Only after pressing her several times did she acknowledge this. She said she'd have her manager call us back - yet again - but couldn't even answer a simple question about what time the 72-hour cancellation window closed. For a front desk employee not to know that is unbelievable. We explained multiple times that the clock was ticking (it was already 2:30pm EST, and we believed the 72-hour mark was 3pm EST), but she showed zero urgency or empathy. Her tone was rude, dismissive, and defensive, and she made it seem like the situation was entirely our fault. Having just come out of surgery, I was stunned at the complete lack of compassion or professionalism. Ultimately, we decided to cancel our stay altogether - because if this is how the staff treats guests before even arriving, we could only imagine what kind of experience awaited us in person. This interaction left a lasting bad impression. We will never stay at The Ansonborough Hotel again and strongly urge others to avoid it if you expect even basic courtesy or competence. read more

It is pretty elegant inside. You walk in to see a wonderful mirror and beautiful art of puppies and nature adorning the walls. Also, the gentleman at the front desk who works here and handles the checking in process was approachable and friendly. The inn holds a wine and cheese social (salsa and chips, sugar cookies, iced tea, lemonade, Merlot, Chardonnay, spicy cheese, cheddar, pepper jack cubes) for the guests from 5-6 pm and offer a complimentary breakfast from 7 until 10 AM for us as well. Inside our room, I see a microwave and a fridge even a Keurig machine. I noticed coffee in the communal area (caffeinated and decaffeinated). I attached a photo of my room so you could see the art. Check in is 3 pm and check out is 12 pm which seems reasonable. There's a lot to like about the interior design such as the art paintings and the wooden beams above your head. In our particular room, there's adequate drawers and storage for your items. There is a closet with exposed brick and place to hang items like coats. I walk in to see mints on my pillow. Definitely a nice touch! There's beautiful tile in your bathroom and also a spot for coffee and tea in the communal area. Also I see a bar to get drinks later downstairs as well. It is walking distance to historic French quarter district where you can go shopping and walk around the neighborhood and try some local cuisine. The downside: For some reason, it smells like smoke inside my room. I don't smoke, but I get headaches when I am surrounded by someone who is smoking. I'm on the first floor, and it's something to consider when choosing your room if you have respiratory issues or struggle with asthma. Another thing is that when people speak, you can hear them in the parking lot or as they pass outside your window and in front of your door. Wow Charleston is full of history and this inn does not disappoint. We wanted to stay near the historic districts but did not want to blow the bank. This gem of a hotel is located just a short walk 6 min to the City Market. Also if you are going on a cruise out of Charleston you are 2-3 blocks from the boarding area. This inn is a converted paper factory and the rooms are amazing. Also all of the staff at the inn are super accommodating and ready with a smile. The Ansonborough Inn is a quaint, sweet mix of a smaller boutique hotel or a bigger bed-and-breakfast. It is definitely a hotel but the staff is so intimate and friendly that it feels like a B&B. They have free wine and cheese tasting every night from 5 to 6. There is a rooftop lounge with a view of Charleston. Free breakfast is also included from 7 to 10 every morning. If you'd like to sleep in, the free coffee and tea bar is open all day. Some might consider the rooms a bit small, compared to something like Homewood suites. I felt there was plenty of space to move around, and the bed was the centerpiece, risen high off the ground. We had a Big screen TV, refrigerator, microwave and a coffee maker in our room. The lobby and serving area was comfortable, spacious, and the breakfast and coffee was appreciated. All the staff were genuinely sweet. The works! No wine in the room, or a small box of chocolates or flowers or even a card. I feel the hotel being smaller and not as many amenities as bigger hotels; they need to try harder. Nice place , clean room, but there try to make money off you any way they can. They charge $25 night for parking, there Free Continental breakfast is a joke, a brown box with 2 day old pastry you can't pick, a small yogurt (no spoon), small oj, nothing hot, and feels like a 7th-grade box lunch, I have had better at Bestwestern, days inn. No grits, no eggs, no meat.no bagel cream cheese, no English muffin with jam, very sad, not classy . they need to do better , they have breakfast sandwiches, To buy extra $10 they use too have a much better spread before the construction. The Free wine and cheese is out, they now have a bar and they want you to buy your wine and drinks. They don't offer free bottle water for the room, it's $3 per bottle. They have raised prices for the room because " they have upgraded" the hotel is not in the French Quarter, still have to walk 3-4 blocks to get to the city market. The main entrance is across the side of a supermarket and you can smell the dumpster in the back. I think my stay was okay, but I will look for a hotel that has real free amenities. They need to do better, try harder to go the extra mile for guests, Offer free parking, other hotels don't, and acknowledge guest's special events in their lives, birthdays, anniversaries, ect. better breakfast local hot grits, country ham, let the guest pick , not here's your box . Again nice hotel , clean room, great staff all helpful. The room has no microwave, you have to ask, the rooms with a "full kitchen" no plates or silverware to use . I cleaned the remote for the bedroom and it was disgusting. I left a gift bag there by accident and it was not found by housekeeping when we checked out. Yes- absolutely my fault for leaving it- but when you pay $400 for a room, you would think there would be better care when checking the room while leaving. Over all fair place. Very spacious. We did the loft suit and it was perfect with a lot of privacy for 2 friends to have their own space. I do think it was alittle pricy but we also did go in the heart of summer. The power went out in the morning as we were eating breakfast which was frustrating. It started to get very hot. We left during the day And when we came back , it came back on. Only thing o would say is they really need to update the carpets they look horrible . Lol breakfast was not great. My family does a trip to the Outer Banks every year around this time and this year, my fiancé and I decided to include an overnight stop in Charleston as part of our plans to drive from Florida to North Carolina. We were really excited as he's never been, so I booked a night's stay. We were planning to leave on Friday but, unfortunately, my fiancé had a medical emergency Tuesday morning and had to be rushed to the ER where, after surgery, he stayed until Friday morning. Most of my family was already out of town so I spent those days going back and forth between the hospital and our home from 9am - 9pm to take care of our dog and our house, while working a full time job. On Wednesday, once I knew my fiancé would get surgery, I realized I needed to begin changing our travel plans. When I called to cancel our stay, the agent was incredibly abrupt and immediately notified me I'd be charged since we were within the cancellation period - no, "hope he gets better soon," "sorry to hear that," etc. I worked in hotels/hospitality for years and we always made exception for medical emergencies. We also always made sure to show some sense of compassion and understanding to guests who were clearly on distress, because customer service is a thing. I had to cancel several appointments and reservations this week and this was the only time I was met with shortness rather than some sort of well wish and assurance it wasn't a problem to cancel. I was just very unimpressed with the lack of courtesy and focus on policies that are unrealistic to expect a person to be more focused on when their loved one is in the hospital. I sent an email that day explaining the situation and asking if there were other options than waiting for Friday night to pass to see if they sold the room to get a refund, or disputing the charge with my credit card. No answer. I sent an email to the hotel manager. Still no answer. So, card dispute it is. When I did finally hear back from the manager a week later, I was surprised to discover that was who I spoke to on the phone. She doubled down on not offering a refund but did at least "regret" that she "came across as insensitive" on the phone and say she hoped he felt better. I understand running a small hotel means you have to be strict with cancellations, but I don't think one whole night for one room is going to bankrupt them - had she offered at least a legitimate apology for the abrupt conversation and/or some sort of very small, nominal credit I'd have not written this review. I guess customer service and courtesy aren't values that are apart of their hotel. So, if you plan to stay here even for a night make sure that, God forbid you have a medical emergency you be sure to have it more than 72-hours before your check-in. And, if you do, make sure you tell your family to call the Ansonborough Inn to cancel your stay before you have them drive you to the hospital. read more

By far one of the coolest and unique hotels I've ever stayed in! The room was absolutely huge, with high ceilings, exposed brick, wood beams, and gorgeous oil paintings on the wall. The staff was incredibly nice and helpful, and answered all of our questions about the history of the inn and best places to check out in downtown Charleston. The best park was the complimentary wine and cheese in the evening! We loved grabbing a plate and heading up to the rooftop terrace for sunset views. We would definitely stay here again! read more

We stayed at this wonderful inn and it was an amazing experience. I actually made a YouTube video about it which is 6 minutes long with narration. Our single room was giant with microwave, fridge, coffee maker, comfy bed, plenty of plugs for devices and the bathroom was also giant. Fantastic friendly staff all around. From 5 to 6 it is free wine and great snacks with cheese. Breakfast in the morning included with great coffee. The outside observation sitting area is on the 3rd floor with a great view. Location, location, location - right in the historic area of Charleston. This place is a gem and worth staying at. read more

What a lovely Inn! The rooms are unique with high beamed ceilings and art that adorned the walls. Our room also had a small bookshelf (with actual books you could read) a leather hide-a-bed, coffee table, a small table with 2 chairs that you can use to plan your adventures or eat on, refrigerator, microwave, Keurig, 2 televisions, and there is a small safe in the closet. We found the location very walkable to most attractions and ended up only using our rental car 1 of the 4 full days we were here. We took advantage of the free breakfast but never seamed to make it back for the wine and cheese. We did take advantage of the roof top deck though as it was nice to sit there in the evening. Oh yes, did I mention they are pet friendly? They even post the names of the pets by the front desk. Made me smile. I have to say, beside the unique rooms, the thing that really sets this inn apart from any other places I have stayed is the staff. Everyone is extremely friendly and accommodating. I especially want to give a shout out to Ellie!! She made us feel right at home from the time we checked in. Every evening when we came back from a day out she had a smile on her face while asking us how our day was. She made us feel like friends. If I had to come up with a negative, it would be the walls between rooms are a bit thin in that there were times we could hear next door's tv. This was our first time staying in Charleston and our first time at the Ansonborough Inn, a very charming, boutique hotel. We found the staff to be quite amazing. They seemed to have a sincere interest in our well being. Every time we walked through the lobby, they would smile, ask how our day went and if we needed anything. They have a continental breakfast in the morning and a happy hour with wine/cheese/ hot appetizers/homemade cookies which you should enjoy either up on the rooftop ( great view especially at sunset ) or in the Captain George Anson room. The Inn's decor has a charming nautical theme and there was beautiful artwork everywhere you looked. The Ansonborough Inn is located in the historic part of town, so everything you want to do is within walking distance. A special thank you to the following staff: Night shift: Sussie York Sussie was probably the friendliest, most welcoming hotel staff member that we have ever met. She went out of her way to make sure that we had everything we needed. She also gave us great advice on places to eat. One night we had a take out dinner delivered to the hotel. When she saw that, she suggested that we bring our dinner up to the rooftop lounge to eat under the stars. That turned out to be a fun and memorable experience! Every time we walked through the lobby, Sussie would say hello and ask how our day went. We found ourselves talking with Sussie as if we had known her our whole lives. At the end of our four night stay she gave us hugs and seemed sincerely disappointed that we were leaving. Day shift: Finn Johnson Finn was very friendly and helpful. He gave us some great suggestions on where to eat and what to do while we were in Charleston. He was also very helpful and accommodating when we decided to stay a few more nights. Hotel manager: Carrie Huston Carrie clearly knows how to train and manage her staff. They all seemed motivated and happy to work there. When we did interact with Carrie she was friendly and never too busy to help. When we return to Charleston, we are definitely staying at the Ansonborough Inn! read more

OVERDELIVERING SURPRISES! If you're like us, the thought of a quaint inn serving as a holiday season family gathering spot in Charleston seemed like an incredible idea. Well the Ansonborough Inn truly overdelivered when it came to surprises. From the minute we arrived, tripping over construction ladders and pulled-up carpet, we could feel the vibe. Doors replaced by tarps and pictures removed from walls were an excellent touch. Greeted with the news that the bar and lobby seating area was shuttered due to these unannounced renovations, we were told not to worry...since the regular dining area had also been demolished, a makeshift converted guest room stuffed with 3 tables was serving the entire inn for complimentary breakfast. Don't miss breakfast! You say, enough surprises! No, no, many more were delivered! Our intoxicatingly, deeply musty room, toilets that never stopped running and dust filled vents were thoughtful as well. Not to be overlooked, the undersized rutted parking lot was half filled with construction vehicles and material. The sound of hammering, sawing, banging and dancing around construction workers during the day only added to the magic. All this, along with an thoroughly unpleasant general manager, was ours at FULL PRICE...less of course, a concession to waive the gratuitous add-on parking fee! Lucky us! Completely overcome by Ansonborough Inn magic and their deep commitment to customer prevention, we cut our family vacation short a day early and drove home through the night, thinking of the lifetime memories we made - like when hammering woke our granddaughter from her nap and she said "why does our room smell so awful?" The Inn was such a wonderful surprise in so many ways. In, as in the old fashion concept, was exactly what we needed tired and hungry from our camping trip We were actually camping in Cherokee North Carolina and we commune with the Native American Cherokee tribe. We were hungry and we still had leaves in indigenous mother earth dirt on us when we showed up The ambiance was so warm and pleasing to the eye because of the gorgeous wood beams throughout the lobby and the rooms. Add the four-story open space to the lobby topped with a ceiling of skylights, an abundance of oil paintings- originals, chandeliers, and fireplaces, presto, an exceptionally architecturally satisfying experience. The staff embodies southern hospitality with a down-to-earth attitude. It is ideally located in the French Quarter with the bonus of being right across from a full-sized organic style (independently owned ) grocery store. "Harris Teeter"- a regal name . The room had 14 ft. ceilings and 480 sq. ft. A bespoke: couch, lovely classic writing desk and chair, compact refrigerator and microwave. of course, a large flat screen tv. The bathroom was well appointed with well-lit mirror and shower with a powerful and large head shower. We only had one day in Charleston on our way back to Sarasota, FL. But it almost seemed as if we were a time war. The time pushed through to where we felt we have been there at least a week maybe more and maybe with the original captain, and abnormal, that had captured many pirate ships and taking their gold. There was even a chest that I found, although it was empty in one of the hallways and I imagine the golden jewelry that was in it and that century We are definitely coming back and cannot imagine of any other home-style respite we'd ever stay. We are definitely world travels as Christine had a business in eight states with 16 officers and she traveled worldwide with her employees. I really enjoyed my stay here - I'd totally come again. It has an interesting décor, and a nice little happy hour. We never managed to make it to breakfast, so I don't have much to say about that. But the happy hour has a few a carafes of wine and some snacks which hit the spot when you're footsore. Staff was extremely friendly. The only negative was that we could hear EVERYTHING going on in the rooms next to us. To be expected in an old building, but if you're a light sleeper, it may not work out that well for you. read more

Ok first the good parts of this hotel - it's a charming older brick building. The hired staff is great, friendly and accommodating. The location is great, right by market street and most of what you will want to see is within walking distance. Unfortunately, we were woken up every morning by people talking, we could hear complete conversations. We thought we just had unusually loud neighbors. We finally figured out on our last night that our room was located directly above the breakfast area (rooms in the 220 and up range). When we called the front desk on our last morning to ask whether that is why we are hearing so much noise, they said yes, that is the reason. When we complained at check out about not being told in advance about the proximity of our room location and the noise associated with it, we were told that since we were leaving, there was nothing that they could do. There was no manager working that day and that they would call us when they were back in the office. This took 2 days. The owner/manager's response was that it is just an old building and that all of the rooms are loud and that there was nothing they could do since our stay was complete. (So, what would they have done had we figured it out sooner if all of the rooms are "all loud"?) I might've expected noise in a less expensive property but at $350 per night this shouldn't happen without full disclosure ahead of time. We are pretty solid sleepers and it was still disruptive for us. Another note, we selected this hotel because it had a bar in it, which it did, but it is not a functioning bar, just a space (see photo). The business center, if you need that, is just a space, as well. No computers or laptops. The fitness center is very minimal (see photos). We also booked through Expedia, which the hotel doesn't seem to like based on other reviews) and while Expedia says that the hotel is able to issue refunds, the owner claims that this is not possible. Expedia has been little help, as well. They know about the noise issue from the breakfast area below and should inform customer's about this upon check in. read more

Loved our room (king sized bed, walk in shower, high ceilings, tv, coffee, fridge), loved the complimentary wine & cheese hour (allowed us to drink a free glass before dinner) (note the cheese is nothing special but tastes good), breakfast is basic but good, and the LOCATION is great. We recently got my boyfriend's parents a two night stay during the holidays. When booking, we mentioned they were in town visiting us. We were pleasantly surprised when they provided a complimentary upgrade to a suite. The room had high ceilings and had a separate seating room from the bedroom. The seating area had a sofa, table and tv. We were told the bed was very comfortable. The only complaint was that the tub itself was pretty shallow so that it may be difficult to take a bath. The Inn was decorated beautifully. They offer a full breakfast, as well as an evening wine and cheese hour and cookies. Being from here, I can vouch that it's in a spot that's easy to get to numerous places without being in the middle of a noisy area. If it's not within walking distance, it's a short uber, bike ride, or pedi cab away. We look forward to recommending this place to others and having our family stay here again. read more

Arrived yesterday forr a 2 night stay to be greeted by the immediate god awful smell from the grocery store dumpster directly across the street from the hotel entrance. My wife had to hold her nose after almost vomiting..The rank smell was overbearing to say the least. Front desk manager refused our request to check out after our 1st night. Our request 'did not meet their cancellation policy'! Pretty ridiculous!! They did not even offer any type of consideration, free parking or a partial refund.for our very disappointing stay. I arrived Thursday evening and was scheduled to check out on Sunday morning. The first two days were great, and honestly, I would have rated the experience up to Saturday the day before my check as excellent with a 5-Star. My issue is with the parking lot flooring on Saturday around 3 p.m. I noticed that the water was up to the doors on my car and I immediately moved the car to a dryer location. The manager on duty acted like this was no big deal. The front desk did not even attempt to reach guest with vehicles until I inquired about the situation. Though I was scheduled to stay another night, I secured my stuff and departed. The front desk told me that the GM would call me Monday. Today is, Wednesday of the following week and the GM never attempted to call me, so I called her. The only thing she would say is that I departed after the checkout time and that signed the parking waiver. The GM's response to this situation is sad. I plan on visiting Charleston more in the future and had decided that I would make future reservations with Ansonborough Inn. Not now! Future Guest... Beware of the parking it floods! read more

This was my first stay at the Ansonborough Inn and I cannot wait to return!! The hotel is historic and charming, the staff is friendly, the central location makes it easy to access the market, French quarter, and King St., and you can't beat the free wine and cheese happy hour! We loved our first room but had an issue with a baby incessantly crying in the room next to us. We made it through one night and decided to request a new room since we were on vacation. The staff had a new room ready for us within 15 minutes and we were actually upgraded. The experience was incredible!! read more

My wife and I stayed here recently and cannot have enough nice things to say about this place. We arrived very late at night after drive 8+ hours and the person at the front desk was very understanding and got us checked in right away. The rooms are very cool with exposed brick mixed with newer styles. Plus the location of the hotel is only about 5 min walk to market street and the restaurants on Market St. and East Bay Street. We booked this hotel last minute. I had searched available rooms on Hotels.com and then filtered by highest guest rating. Ansonbough Inn was fifth on the list, and had a great rate compared to the other top rated hotels. On arrival we were greeted by two great front desk attendants and felt very welcome. We travel with our bikes and asked if we could bring them through the lobby and in to the room. There was no hesitation in allowing this. Later the first evening, we stopped in the hospitality suite, as we came back from dinner, to get hot tea. There was one of the kind we wanted. I went to the front desk and asked. He went in the kitchen and found us another tea. On Christmas night, the hot water urn had cooled when we went for tea. The front desk attendant came through again and got us steaming hot water directly from the coffee brewer in the kitchen. The staff here really seems to enjoy working here and helping their guests. The room itself was huge. A living room and kitchenette area and a separate bedroom can be expected in the Junior rooms. 16' ceilings with exposed heart pine beams and the brick walls bring the history of Charleston inside. The location is convenient to all of downtown Charleston. We barely used our car for the four days we were here. We will certainly return and recommend the Ansonborough Inn to our friends. read more

At a lower price point, they'd get a 3. The good: -Comfy bed (not in the league of hotels at a similar price point, but comfortable. Crisp sheets with a moderate thread count) -really nice housekeeping staff (I stayed two nights, left the "do not disturb" sign and they kindly left me a basket of towels and shampoo outside my door)///my room was clean (my coworker, OTOH, found long hairs on his sheets) -gorgeous lobby with exposed beams and soaring atrium that makes you feel like you're about to enter a rustic chic boutique hotel ...Only, you're not. I'm afraid the bad outweighs the good. The main thing: it really could use one of those hotel makeover guys in here. It's so incredibly outdated. For example, Andes mints left on the pillow and "do not disturb/maid clean room" signs that remind me of being a kid at a Holiday Inn circa 1982. Neither are a really big deal, but it's just to give potential guests an idea. My room on the first floor was dreary. It led right to the street (there's even a glass door to the street that you can't open, but it's still unsettling) and had no natural light, so the room was perpetually depressing. The ceilings have are wood-paneled. The carpet seems old. Each room has what seems to be mismatched old furniture (my room had shabby overstuffed love seat and arm chair, while my coworker's had a pleather couch and a table). The furniture is crammed in there and makes you feel claustrophobic. Don't expect a bathrobe (at this price point, I would) and towels are rough and thin. No mini bar. Not even a bottle of water, which is especially unacceptable, as waking up to a glass of tepid tap water is really not a great way to start the day. You can attempt to get some water in the hospitality room... if anyone fills the water thermos. Then there's the "work out room." Even a carefully placed mirror won't give you the impression that this is anything but a single treadmill, a single elliptical and a small cable weight unit in a florescent- lit closet. There isn't even a water cooler in there. Again, with the lack of accessible water. And a final note: it's family-friendly. Which isn't awesome when you're here for work (picture 6 am screams and shouts echoing around that beautiful atrium lobby). If you can get a room at a good discount, sure, go for it as it's not the worst place in the world. Do. Not. Pay. Their asking price. For that, you should be in a Westin or Omni, not a (barely) glorified La Quinta with a nicer lobby. Staying here should cost one half the price. read more
