The Mills House may be a beautiful historic hotel, but its hospitality, particularly among its…read moresenior leadership, is an absolute disgrace. My husband and I chose this property for our wedding weekend, expecting a memorable and welcoming experience, only to have what should have been one of the happiest occasions of our lives overshadowed by the appalling attitudes and conduct of multiple employees and managers. I live with serious medical conditions that require access to a microwave to warm medical devices and certain medications throughout the night. Rather than approaching this as a legitimate disability-related accommodation request, staff repeatedly treated it as an ordinary amenity issue. At 2 a.m. on our first night, my husband approached the overnight front desk employee to explain my needs. When he returned specifically to THANK her for attempting to help us, she rolled her eyes and sarcastically emphasized the word "need." The wedding coordinator also seemed visibly irritated by our questions about our wedding arrangements, and several members of senior management demonstrated an equally disappointing lack of compassion. Most astonishingly, General Manager Mr. Linder suggested that we relocate to another hotel THE DAY BEFORE OUR WEDDING to accommodate my medical needs. That this was considered an appropriate response by the person responsible for running the property speaks volumes about the standard of hospitality demonstrated by its leadership. I do want to recognize two employees who genuinely made us feel cared for: Mr. Paulussen, who helped facilitate getting my medical needs met, and Duwight, who graciously helped us record our wedding-day first look. Their kindness and professionalism stood in stark contrast to the treatment we received from others. What makes this experience particularly infuriating is that every one of our needs was ultimately met. The problem was never the outcome. It was the appalling manner in which we were treated while trying to get there. Simple requests became exhausting ordeals involving dismissive attitudes, unnecessary resistance, repeated explanations, and escalation through multiple members of management. Instead of enjoying the day before our wedding, my husband spent precious hours advocating for medical accommodations that ultimately proved entirely achievable, while I dealt with the additional physical and emotional toll of the situation. Perhaps most telling is that General Manager Mr. Linder has yet to offer a sincere apology for the unnecessary stress and disruption his handling of the situation caused during our wedding weekend. When the person responsible for setting the standard of hospitality cannot even acknowledge how his decisions affected his guests, it's hardly surprising that other members of his team demonstrate a similar lack of empathy and accountability. Based on my experience, I would strongly caution anyone with an "invisible" disability or chronic medical condition against staying at The Mills House. You may ultimately receive everything you need, as we did, but you should not have to endure disrespect, feel belittled, or be made to feel like an inconvenience simply because your medical needs require some flexibility and understanding. Meeting a guest's needs after making them fight for basic consideration is not exceptional hospitality. It is a failure of hospitality. Beautiful surroundings cannot compensate for leadership that has seemingly forgotten that treating people with dignity, compassion, and respect is the very foundation of this industry. Our wedding weekend deserved far better, and so does every guest who chooses to stay here.

This represents a significant value and affords visitors to Charleston with the flexibility to take a ride share inexpensively into the old town areas or drive and park as desired. The domestic staff are friendly and accommodating. Front desk and bar/restaurant workers were also very nice. Some attention to detail for the condition of the hallway interior is needed. Nearly every fifteen feet there were areas of curling wallpaper. It became so consistently seen that I figured it was being ignored... and that was disappointing. I realize that upkeep can be difficult, but this is nothing expensive that should be shrugged off. Presentable surroundings are important in the hospitality business. I expect better. The nice amenities, decent gym and friendly staff are what creates the environment for a pleasant experience. Two of these were met and the friendly staff, was mostly there. . .but one sour apple truly changed the course of our stay. Even my wife, who worked once upon a time in hospitality at Kiawah Resort, was started by the interactions from The Loutrel Hotel staff member. Long story short. The daily complimentary breakfast was served. I accidentally went to place the granola lid on the yogurt, my wife told me that was the wrong lid and I went to correct. From across the room the breakfast attendant yelled, "sir that doesn't go there." Startled, I immediately removed it and placed it accordingly. I laughed it off. Moments later I went to sit my breakfast down where my drink was located. Same attendant, "you're not even sitting at the right table with your wife." Again, my error, but don't call me out twice in one morning. It's a small lobby, so many staff members overheard the interaction. Nothing was done by other management. The next morning, I walked down to look at breakfast. I saw the same attendant and said, good morning. She looked at me but wasn't pleasant in her response. Unlike the rest of her colleagues at the restaurant who are polite and kind, the same customer service I expect and provide to my customers. Breakfast offered salmon with some type of eggs or shellfish. I can't eat shellfish, allergic. So, I went to grab a biscuit at a local coffee shop and a coffee. We came back to the hotel and sat our food down. The same rude attendant came over, nudged my wife in her back and said, "you can't have this here, cross contamination." So, I left. Allowed my wife to eat her yogurt in the area. Funny enough, my wife asked where the utensils were, because every table had them. Same attendant rudely, pointed to another table for her to get them. I should have just sat down and ate my food as I didn't see any signs for "no outside food." Either way, stay somewhere else. It's unfortunate that a hotel like this allows such rudeness from a staff member. I did report this to the manager, and online but was met with more passivity. Comped two nights of valet. Honestly, it wasn't enough. I would never stay here again and it ended the trip on such a sour note.

I had no idea what to expect of the rooms. Honestly, we booked this place last minute so I briefly reviewed the pictures and reviews but was just ready to get away. BUT when we got to the room, after self parking at the public garage behind the hotel, we opened the door to the cutest little room. It was sized as if it was in New York City but had cute boho chic charm. It's perfectly located in the middle of everything and the walkability was what we enjoyed most. We walked to all of the best restaurants and shops once we parked, we only left the a garage once the entire time there. We loved the daily breakfast and were intentional about making it downstairs for it. The grits were absolutely delicious. Perfectly cooked and once topped with the shredded cheese and fresh cracked pepper, I couldn't get enough! The pastries and biscuits were also very good. The biscuits and pastries tasted like someone's grandma made them. I know this review is long, so I'll stop now even though I could say so much more. We'll definitely return because I failed to try their espresso martini and they boast to have the best. Note: There's a valet option but the self parking seemed easier.
