Hubby and I decided to do a short staycation in DT and we really enjoyed our stay here…read more Duwhyte at the FD was very nice upon checking us in and upgraded us which was such a nice surprise. Although it wasn't cabana season or warm enough to get into the pool, the cabana room was really nice and clean. I thought the room was just so cute and loved how the entire hotel was decorated. I was still able to enjoy a couple hours sitting out in the sun by the pool during my stay. They offered an hour of complimentary champagne in the late afternoon which was a nice touch. The hotel has a nice cafe and restaurant attached so you don't have to go far to find some food and coffee. I definitely recommend this hotel and enjoyed our brief time there.

In another lifetime, about 50 years ago, we'd go to Charleston frequently and stayed at the Mills…read moreHouse at least a couple of times. We even considered having our wedding here. The Mills House is one of the truly classic Charleston hotels. It has gone through a lot of owners in its history. It has been an independent property, a Hyatt, a Wyndham and has had many other flags. Hilton has renovated it a bit but kept most of its eccentricities. The location on Meeting Street not far from King can't be beat. The staff is friendly and helpful. The food and drink are the main restaurant and bar, the Iron Rose, are good. The negatives include the plumbing. On two of the three days we were there over Christmas, the water in the shower was just lukewarm, and the water pressure came and went. The other main negative is the cost of parking, $60 a night. That's a Manhattan price, not what you'd expect in a mid-size Southern city. Still, we like the atmosphere and the history, so we'll stick with five stars.

It's not good for large groups as it is setup conversation style with couches, club chairs, and a small bar. Perfect place for a night cap after dinner. There were a lots of bars, restaurants and shops within walking distance. They boast about their butler service, which is pretty unique in the United States (akin to the resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean). We only stayed one night and did not make the most out of it. Our butler was very pleasant and offered detailed recommendations regarding restaurants in the area. The staff is welcoming and friendly. We arrived early and had to wait a few hours until our room was ready. That was a slight nuisance as it was a cold and rainy October weekend in Charleston. Luckily they had plenty of umbrellas for us to use. The welcome cocktails were a nice touch when we were finally able to check-in. Other nice touches include the complimentary drinks, candies and snacks that were already waiting in the room. The turndown service also included chocolate and a small sweet alcoholic drink / shot. Lastly, the included room service breakfast in the morning elevates the stay. A lot of good things. However, I thought the rooms themselves were just okay and a bit dated. Our friends stayed at a boutique hotel with vaulted ceilings and its own kitchenette for less money. Another disappointment was that we booked a room with a small outdoor courtyard, but were given a regular room. Given the weather, we probably wouldn't have used the outdoor space at all, but it would be good to get what you paid for. Overall very good service and location. They have a nice bar by the lobby that we did not make use of. The rooms themselves are just okay and on the small size. I would probably stay somewhere else next time I visit Charleston, even though I have nothing bad to say about The Spectator. Maybe my expectations were too high with a 4.8 / 5 average Yelp score. I just think there's better value elsewhere.

You're only as strong as your weakest link…read more I've stayed in many hotels for both work and personal travel. The nice amenities, decent gym and friendly staff are what creates the environment for a pleasant experience. Two of these were met and the friendly staff, was mostly there. . .but one sour apple truly changed the course of our stay. Even my wife, who worked once upon a time in hospitality at Kiawah Resort, was started by the interactions from The Loutrel Hotel staff member. Long story short. The daily complimentary breakfast was served. I accidentally went to place the granola lid on the yogurt, my wife told me that was the wrong lid and I went to correct. From across the room the breakfast attendant yelled, "sir that doesn't go there." Startled, I immediately removed it and placed it accordingly. I laughed it off. Moments later I went to sit my breakfast down where my drink was located. Same attendant, "you're not even sitting at the right table with your wife." Again, my error, but don't call me out twice in one morning. It's a small lobby, so many staff members overheard the interaction. Nothing was done by other management. The next morning, I walked down to look at breakfast. I saw the same attendant and said, good morning. She looked at me but wasn't pleasant in her response. Unlike the rest of her colleagues at the restaurant who are polite and kind, the same customer service I expect and provide to my customers. Breakfast offered salmon with some type of eggs or shellfish. I can't eat shellfish, allergic. So, I went to grab a biscuit at a local coffee shop and a coffee. We came back to the hotel and sat our food down. The same rude attendant came over, nudged my wife in her back and said, "you can't have this here, cross contamination." So, I left. Allowed my wife to eat her yogurt in the area. Funny enough, my wife asked where the utensils were, because every table had them. Same attendant rudely, pointed to another table for her to get them. I should have just sat down and ate my food as I didn't see any signs for "no outside food." Either way, stay somewhere else. It's unfortunate that a hotel like this allows such rudeness from a staff member. I did report this to the manager, and online but was met with more passivity. Comped two nights of valet. Honestly, it wasn't enough. I would never stay here again and it ended the trip on such a sour note.

What a nice feeling that is. He asked where we flew in from and we chatted briefly, it turned out we are from the same area, small world indeed. He checked us in and made sure to tell us that breakfast is almost done and if we want a bite to please go down the hall. The room was just as expected, perfect space for a short trip. The kitchenette had everything one would need and than some. The bed was comfy, and decor was just enough. But let me tell you about the shower! The water pressure was the best I've had in years! I do not like to waste water but I just wanted to stand there it felt so good. I also like the full size bottles of shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Staff was also kind to give us suggestions and help us plan out our sightseeing so we could take advantage of all the town has to offer. The hotel is located in a perfect part of town not too busy and quiet. It took us 30 min walking to downtown, but there is a free shuttle that makes stops at all the major points and it runs quite often. Hotel also provided us with a free map of the downtown and all the things to do. I highly recommend this location.

I always appreciated my time here because the rooms were very spacious, often very bright during the day, and among the best views. I also liked its proximity to the breakfast as the elevator lobby shares the space. As mentioned in my review for the Hyatt Place I enjoy this hotel. It is a great location on King Street but close to the freeway. It was very easy to get to and leave to get to work. I thought the staff were lovely and very responsive. The little bar was a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the weekend. It was great staying here.
